Denny Cline may not carry the official title of Gremlins tennis head coach — even though he’s outlasted three of them during the program’s four-year existence — or be credited to bringing tennis to Sacred Heart. The final decision was OK’d by principal Mark Register, but don’t be mistaken about who the heartbeat of the young program is. The 49-year-old Sedalia native, whose day job is warehouse receiving group leader at Gardner Denver, eats, drinks and lives tennis in the spring, serving as volunteer assistant coach for the Gremlins tennis team. But before delving into Cline’s influence on a program that has finished a collective 165 the last two seasons, advanced to regional play in 2010 and had a state qualifier in two of its three campaigns, his devotion to the sport must first be understood. And for that he can thank his son, former all-state tennis star Alex. Before the birth of Alex — a 2010 graduate of Sacred Heart School and now a collegiate player at the St. Louis College of Pharmacy — Cline knew little to nothing about the game. Cline never touched a tennis racket growing up. Instead, his athletic prowess was confined to the hardwood at Smith-Cotton High School, where he started as guard under Willie Jenkins until graduating in 1980. “Basketball is what I played — loved it,” said Cline. “I never even thought about tennis growing up.” At least until Alex became enamored with the sport in the late 1990s as a 7-year-old budding talent. “My background in tennis? None,” Cline said. “I recognized Alex wanted to play tennis and picked up the racket with him. I learned with him.” “Alex became a (United States Tennis Association) kid, started playing around 7 or so with the (Sedalia) parks and rec and coach (Steve) Schilb and Rod Davis during the summers. Then Tom Cunningham and me started working with him.” So what gave Cline the authority or experience to help teach his son tennis, a game he new little about for the first four decades of his life? “We took Alex for what I want to say two to three months to Woodside Academy in Kansas City for professional lessons, and I just watched that guy who was teaching Alex the proper way to serve, the ins and outs of the backhand and forehand, and I saw how he handled the kids and talked to them. I just kind of brought that back to Sedalia.” While Alex flourished on the USTA junior circuit, his future in tennis hit a snag as he entered Sacred Heart, which, like every other school in the Kaysinger Conference, didn’t offer tennis. “We had contemplated at one time going to Smith-Cotton because Alex swam for Joe Arbisi through the Bandits, and he was

a top-notch swimmer, so he could have done both swimming and tennis,” Cline said. “We chose to stay, however, because of the academics and more of a one-on-one type deal at Sacred Heart, which we felt had better studies.” But that doesn’t mean Cline was resigned to let his son’s talents on the tennis court go to waste without a fight. “Let’s go back at least five and a half years, about a year and a half before the team came about,” Cline said. “I was on the school board and we wanted to bring some new sports at the time. We brought up swimming and tennis, but we talked and we thought this isn’t going to happen. But Mark Register approached us one day and said, ‘You know what, I think we’re going to get this tennis team going.’ That really surprised us.” In their first year, the Gremlins posted a winning record, and a lot of that success can be attributed to Cline who, because only a Sacred Heart teacher could assume the head coaching role, had the task of working with multiple players who had never before held a racket. “It was natural that I step in to help,” Cline said. “My role from day one has been to basically to work with the kids, teach them the fundamentals and get them prepared for match play while the head coach is there to run the ins and outs of what it takes with scheduling, communicating with other coaches and the behind-thescenes stuff.” It’s been an everyday commitment for Cline, who has provided stability for a program that’s had three coaches in four years. Register understands that it’s because of Cline’s dedication that the program has been able to thrive. “We really couldn’t have done this without Denny,” he said. “While we’ve had some great folks help the program and take over head coaching duties, Denny’s been here from the beginning and has lent all the expertise to it. ... He’s been a great asset and him continuing with the program speaks volumes about his character.” With Alex graduating two years ago, Cline could have been like most parents in taking a less hands-on approach and supporting the program from afar. But Cline’s involvement is about continuing a tradition he’s held close to his heart since the inaugural team stepped on the tennis courts in March 2009. “It’s too much fun — love to do it,” Cline said. So how long does he expect to stay on as assistant coach? “As long as they’ll have me, I’ll be there,” Cline said. “Just going around the kids, when they see me they’ll say, ‘Are you going to coach this year, coach Cline? Are you going to coach this year, coach Cline?’ So it’s kind of like, how can you say no?”

‘Vault hats’ preserve outdoor memories CBS Sports cap provided plenty of luck for writer’s father

I have no idea how many hats I’ve owned over the years, but it’s well over 100. Out of this constantly changing sea of headgear, four have gained immortality. They are what one of my first writing mentors called “vault hats,” because what they represent is worth preserving and protecting. By far the most precious of my vault hats is a navy blue-billed cap with a bright yellow patch sewn onto the front of its crown, bearing the logo, “CBS Sports.” It belonged to my dad who, while not directly affiliated with CBS sports, was the first engineer hired by KTVH, CBS’s pioneer station in central Kansas. That cap was the most completely lucksaturated fisherman’s talisman I’ve ever seen. Limit catches followed it wherever it went, and, more often than not, it emitted enough good fortune to cover me as well. The CBS Sports cap reached its zenith on an August day in 1996, when Dad and I caught a boat limit of Truman Lake crappie from a single treetop. Buoyed by his lucky cap, Dad was as good at hauling in big fish as he was at snaring limits. I took him to Ben’s Black Bear Camp, located north of Dinorwic, Ontario, in May 1990. At an annual fish fry held in Pleasantville, Iowa, the following March, camp owner Ben Harvey presented caps bearing the logo, “I caught the big one at Ben’s Black Bear Camp” to the guests who landed the biggest fish each week. Dad needed less than 10 minutes to win it the week we were there with a huge northern pike he caught when I paused in a featureless bay so he could practice casting. That cap has a place in my vault. Ben’s Black Bear Camp produced a vault hat for me, too. I spent the evenings of our 1990 trip hunting black bears with what, to put a positive spin on it, was a perfect lack of success. Then on the way to the back country lake we intended to fish the last morning of our stay, we spotted an impressively large bear feeding on clover along the edge of the tworut access road. He was back again on our way back out. Dad, who was normally a stickler for keeping to prearranged schedules, suggested I make a try for the bear, despite the fact that our departure would be delayed if I got him.

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

Less than 10 minutes after I’d taken a position halfway up a rocky outcropping, the bear appeared walking parallel to the trail but downslope from it enough that only the top half of his back showed. When I fired, the bear flipped completely over and slid out of sight down the slope. I rushed back to camp to announce my victory and to get help hauling my trophy out of the swamp into which its body had disappeared. Half an hour of increasingly frantic searching failed to turn up any trace of the bear. A friend of mine and I decided to try to reconstruct the shot and its possible consequences. We concluded that my bullet had passed over the top of the bear’s back almost close enough to cut hair. Startled, the bear had slipped and fallen on the steep slope, leading me to the logical conclusion I’d delivered a mortal blow. At the following March’s fish fry, after all of the caps had been distributed, I was called to the stage. With a flourish and an overly complete explanation, Ben presented me a cap which announced, “I shot AT my bear at Ben’s Black Bear Camp.” The fourth vault hat, a bright blue-billed cap with “National Action Pistol Championship 1989 Bianchi Cup” printed on a gray background, is a memento of one of my most ego-enhancing accomplishments. A number of gun writers, a few general interest reporters and I had arrived at the range where the Bianchi Cup matches would be shot the next day. By midafternoon, the range master offered to set up a slightly abbreviated version of the competition course for us to shoot. So there I was, standing on the firing line flanked by men who specialized in writing about guns and who shot virtually every day. I’m reasonably proficient with a handgun, but, in the real world, there was no way this was going to be pretty. But when the smoke cleared, I was standing alone on top of the heap. I couldn’t have done it again if they would have run the course 50 more times, but I didn’t have to. I accepted the cap that was the winnertake-all crown for being top gun among the outdoor press and tried to keep my jaw from dropping open.

(NAPS)—The first five years of life are the years of learning that shape kids’ futures. Yet every year, more than 1 million children with unidentified delays and disabilities enter school with learning and health issues that put them far behind their peers. According to the National Survey of Children’s Health, one in five households with children has a child with a special health care need and could benefit from screening and services, yet less than 20 percent of children under the age of 5 receive a developmental screening. While every child develops at his or her own pace, there are some milestones parents should be aware of. Easter Seals, through the generous support of the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, offers parents free access to an online screening tool to Is your child at risk? Use an online screenhelp parents monitor their child’s ing tool at MakeTheFirstFiveCount.org to developmental milestones. Widely find out. used with parents by health care providers, preschool programs and early childhood professionals, Brookes Publishing’s Ages & Stages Questionnaires® can now be easily completed by parents at www.MakeTheFirstFiveCount.org. Here are a few of the milestones included in the screening tool: Birth to 1 year • At 2 months, does your baby smile when you talk to her? Does your baby roll from his back to his tummy at 8 months? • When holding a small toy in each hand, does your baby clap the toys together (like ‘Pat-a-cake’) at 12 months? 1 to 2 years • At 14 months, does your baby take several steps without tripping or falling? • Does your child help turn the pages of a book at 16 months? • When you ask your child to point to her nose, eyes, hair, feet, ears and so forth, does she correctly point to at least seven body parts? 2 to 3 years • Does your child run fairly well, stopping herself without bumping into things or falling? Does your child put on a coat, jacket or shirt by himself? • When drawing, does your child hold a pencil, crayon or pen between her fingers and thumb like an adult does? 3 to 4 years • Can your child cut paper with child-safe scissors? If you place five objects in front of your child, can he count them by saying, “one, two, three, four, five,” in order? 4 to 5 years • Does your child use four- and five-word sentences? • Does your child usually take turns and share with other children? If something doesn’t feel quite right, share your concerns with your health care provider. Early identification and treatment are keys to a bright future for your child.

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: My friends and I watched the Wladimir Klitschko heavyweighttitle bout against Jena-Marc Mormeck at our local bar, and were happy to see Wladimir retain his heavyweight title. One of my friends said he heard that Wladimir intends to start up an acting career when he's done with boxing. Is that true? -- John R., Indianapolis A: While it's true that the handsome Ukrainian has dipped his foot in the Hollywood pool -- the documentary "Klitschko," which centers on his and his older brother Vitali's rise in the boxing world, has been making quite an impression on festival goers since premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival last year -Wladimir is keeping his eye firmly on his boxing career. I spoke with him recently about the acting rumors, and he told me: "While I am asked often about being in movies -- usually it's a Russian mob character -- it's always the same thing. I did play myself in 'Ocean's Eleven,' and I did two German comedies. But right now I'm playing the role called the Heavyweight Champion of the World, and it takes all of my time. I really like to play it, and I have to stay focused. So there's no nonsense with any wannabe Hollywood stuff. If I lose my focus, then I'm going to lose the titles, and I don't want to do that." You can watch Wladimir defend his title July 7 against Tony Thompson, and read my entire engaging interview with the charming heavyweight at www.celebrityextraonline.com. *** Q: I am so excited to see "The Avengers," starring all of my favorite comic-book heroes, especially Captain America. Because of "The Avengers," does that mean there won't be a "Captain Amer-

Wladimir Klitschko

ica: The First Avenger" sequel for a while? -- Fred D., via e-mail A: Walt Disney Studios recently announced that Chris Evans will again suit up in red, white and blue to save the world from the bad guys. You can expect the sequel to last summer's blockbuster hit to arrive in theaters April 4, 2014. While it's still too early to camp out for tickets, at least there's a release date in sight. *** Q: I'm really sad about this being the final season of "Desperate Housewives." How are the ladies of Wisteria Lane taking it? -J.J. A: If one of Marcia Cross' latest tweets is any indication, they are as sad as you are. Marcia recently lamented via Twitter: "How do you handle goodbyes? Me, not so well ... already feel so sad and vulnerable ... [I] will miss my 'Desperate Housewives' family terribly." *** Readers: Here's an update on release dates of various HBO projects that have been mentioned in past columns. First, season five "True Blood" premieres on June 10 at 9 p.m. with 12 all-new episodes. Also, "Newsroom" -- the Aaron Sorkin drama starring Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer and Sam Waterson -- premieres its 10-episode first season on June 24 at 10 p.m. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
