LATISHA KOETTING/DEMOCRAT Emma Kostopolus teaches Girl Scouts from the area about the country of Egypt at Thinking Day 2012 at First Christian Church on Feb. 23. By Latisha Koetting

Though Emma Kostopolus, of Sedalia, is a busy college student, she makes time to help some special girls. Kostopolus joined Girls Scouts when she was in kindergarten. She feels Scouting is a good opportunity for girls to learn new things and to make new friends. Despite the fun she was having when she was young, she quit Girl Scouts in the fifth grade because several of her friends were older and were in different troops. “A lot of people really don’t realize scouting continues after the fifth grade,” she said. However, she found she missed it and returned as a volunteer a few years later. She has gone on to receive the Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouts. This is the equivalent to Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. “Scouting is important for older girls so they can develop leadership skills and get experience that can be used in other areas of their lives,” she said. About 5.5 percent of eligible Girl Scouts achieve this award. Girls must do 50 hours of leadership either in Girl Scouts or in the community. She earned her Silver Award by helping the Brownies. “Those girls became Juniors and I decided to step up and lead the troop,” she said. Every Thursday night she meets with the girls of Troop 290 for 90 minutes. She plans the programs and activities for the troop. Destiny Clancy, 10, of Sedalia, is one of the girls Kostopolus works with. Destiny said having her as a leader was amazing and it changed her life. She had been thinking about quitting but Kostopolus made scouting fun and made her feel special. “She’s trying so hard. She’s coming down here all the way from college to help us learn stuff that some people have never learned before,” Destiny said. Alexis Bassett, 11, another Junior said having Kostopolus as a leader “means that I know that we’re going to have fun no matter what we do.”

While at the helm this year, there was something special Kostopolus desired. “I wanted my girls to do Thinking Day,” she said. “I remember Thinking Day as one of my favorite activities when I was about their age. I wanted them to get experience in taking charge and helping girls their own age and younger.” Thinking Day is a celebration where girls plan activities with global themes. The girls of Troop 290 each picked a country and taught other Scouts about their countries through cuisine, crafts and facts. “It’s a lot to ask of fourth and fifth-graders,” she said. “I think they did wonderfully.” Besides the leadership hours, Kostopolus also had to do a community service project to get her Gold Award. She did a community-wide literacy drive in the fall of 2011. She had drop boxes at several libraries and churches and collected 700 books which she gave to the Sedalia School District 200. “The Gold Award is a lot of work, but it’s really rewarding. It’s nice to know that I gave back to the school district that I was once a student in,” Kostopolus said. She also mentioned how the award looks good on college applications and can help with scholarships. Kostopolus graduated from Smith-Cotton in December and is attending the University of Central Missouri. She is double majoring in philosophy and mathematics. Though she doesn’t know what her schedule will be next semester, she would like to keep working with the Girl Scouts in some capacity. As for the girls in Troop 290, she would like to see them all continue with scouting and become active leaders. “I would like to see them get their Silver and Gold awards ideally one day,” she said. “I know if she can work hard enough to do it, that I can too,” said Alexis. Kostopolus is the daughter of Dalton and Terry Kostopolus, of Sedalia.

Women Rising: How Women Will Learn, Work and Start Businesses In The 21st Century

(NAPS)—Women have become more vital to America’s prosperity than ever. Without their activity in the U.S. workforce, the economy would shrink by 25 percent. A new book by the vice president and managing director of Apollo Research Institute finds that women’s contributions to management, small business and job creation are at an all-time high. In “Society 3.0: How Technology Is Reshaping Education, Work and Society,” Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti describes how women’s changing roles and rising rates of educational achievement are helping them master the challenges of career while maintaining work/life balance. A former Silicon Valley executive, Dr. WilenDaugenti says that more Degree-holding women will prosper in women leaders are emerging tomorrow’s competitive job market. as societal perceptions evolve. Rising numbers of Americans now believe women should be the major family breadwinner, she writes, and men are assuming a fairer share of home and family duties to compensate. Although women still earn only 77 percent of what their male colleagues earn for comparable work, they bring home 44 percent of U.S. household income. They fared better than men during the Great Recession, however, with only 25 percent of layoffs affecting female employees. And women-owned firms are responsible for over 23 million jobs and $3 trillion in annual economic impact. Women are finding creative ways to bust stereotypes while launching satisfying careers. Self-employment is one path; 35 percent of all solo entrepreneurs are women, and their numbers are increasing by 23 percent annually. “Women can also stand out by entering traditionally male-dominated careers such as science, engineering and computer technology, where salaries happen to be highly competitive,” Dr. Wilen-Daugenti says. Education is helping to close the gap. Women are now earning more higher degrees than men. And more female managers hold bachelor’s or master’s degrees than do male managers. “These trends position women to prevail in a competitive future,” says Dr. Wilen-Daugenti. CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: Could you give some information on the two actors who play Finch and Reese on "Person of Interest"? I don't recall seeing either of them before, but I like them both and find the show exciting. -- Karen V., Roanoke, Va. A: Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel play Harold Finch and John Reese, respectively. Many will remember Michael, 57, from "Lost," where he played Ben. He's also made the rounds on the cops-and-lawyers shows like "The Practice," "The X-Files," "Without a Trace," "Law and Order: SVU," etc. Prior to "Person of Interest," Jim, 43, was best known for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ." You can see Jim on the big screen later this year in "Savannah" and "Bliss!" and next year in "The Tomb" with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. *** Q: I am so happy that USA Network's "Fairly Legal" is finally back for another season. Can you give me any scoop for season two? -- Violet F., via e-mail A: I spoke with "Fairly Legal" co-star Virginia Williams, who plays Lauren Reed on the hit legal drama, and she gave me some spoilers. "We get to see more facets of Lauren this year, which is great," Virginia said. "We get to see her at home, for example. Everything still revolves around Reed & Reed, but we do see glimpses of Lauren at home: coming back from a jog, going on a date, having some sort of a life outside work. We get to see her with her hair down, literally and figuratively. She's still quite guarded and protective and exacting and stylish and brilliant, but she's a lot more comfortable with her position now. "Last season was all about Lauren proving to everyone else that she was capable and that she wasn't just a trophy wife," she said. "She could get the job done and could lead the firm. This season we see that she not only is extremely capable, but the firm ends up being better off than it was even before

Virginia Williams

Teddy died."

*** Q: I heard that there is going to be another singing-competition show airing this summer, I think on ABC? Can you tell me about it? -- Clark F., via email A: "Duets" is the latest vocal-competition show to hit the small screen, and it is indeed airing on ABC. Currently looking for contestants (abc.com/casting), this show stars Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Lionel Richie and Robin Thicke, who will travel the country looking for undiscovered talent to be their proteges, as well as duet partners. *** Q: I still miss seeing Leah Remini on "The Talk." Any chance she'll return? -- Hazel D., Akron, Ohio A: Not if Sharon Osbourne has any say, and it appears she does. Leah told fans on Twitter that "Sharon thought me and Holly [Robinson Peete] were 'ghetto' (her words), we were not funny, awkward and didn't know ourselves ... She had us fired." Coping with wind while hunting, fishing in spring

I hate wind. I do understand that the movement of air from areas of high barometric pressure to low ones is an essential component of keeping our planet inhabitable. But wind haunts my fishing and hunting so much that I think it has to be deliberate. I suppose I could stay home when trees with trunks I can’t begin to reach around are swaying. That’s what I usually did back when I was writing full time. Nowadays, time devoted to other interests in addition to writing has forced me to look for ways to cope with conditions I once wrote off as intolerable. When fishing from the bank, a small- to medium-sized stream — preferably one without channels — provides enough protection from the ill effects of high winds to minimize any need to compromise with the elements. These streams can be refuges for anglers who prefer to fish from boats. Anglers who prefer to anchor crosswise to the current may be limited to areas where the wind and the current are moving in the same direction. Ponds and small impoundments with good access for bank anglers are great places to fish on windy days. Since protected coves, points and windblown shorelines will be within walking distance of each other, it doesn’t take long to determine where most of the body of water’s active fish are holding. Or at least it doesn’t if the angler equips him or herself with lures suited for use under adverse conditions. For example, no one other than a bona fide expert should attempt to use a fly rod anytime wind speeds reach double digits. The same could be said for casting light, bulky lures. Instead, stick with jigs, inline spinnerbaits and streamlined crankbaits. Unless the fish are really biting — which they sometimes are — boating on a major reservoir when wind speeds exceed about 20 mph isn’t much fun for the passenger, and it’s no fun for the person operating the boat. Given that the boat is up to the task, it can be done by preplanning launch sites as close to the area to be fished as possible. Although I’ve done it before and probably will again, I can’t in good conscience recommend boating on a large river on a windy day. Travel can be deceptively easy on stretches where the direction of the wind and the current are the same, but around the next bend may be a stretch where the wind and the water are moving in opposite directions. This creates large waves, the crests of which are much closer together than they would be under similar conditions on a lake. As a general rule, land animals share my opinion of wind. Deer, for example, depend on their senses of

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

scent, hearing and sight for both communication and survival. As wind speeds increase, scent disperses in unpredictable patterns, hearing becomes impaired and moving vegetation confuses vision. Moderate winds shift deer into protected valleys and downwind slopes, but they may remain active. High winds cause deer to hole up in the heaviest available cover where they often remain immobile even when closely approached by hunters. I’ve personally observed squirrels misjudge leaps from one tree to another and wind up falling unceremoniously to the forest floor. They give every indication they didn’t enjoy the experience. Limbs being whipped back and forth by high winds add all but impossible complications to something that must be difficult under the best circumstances even for natural acrobats. Squirrel hunting when the winds exceed 25 mph is usually futile, because the animals will stay in their dens all day. If the high winds persist for several days, hunger will force the squirrels to make brief forays for food, but they’ll spend most of their time close to or on the ground and will be exceptionally wary. From a hunter’s perspective, the way birds respond to wind varies with species. In the spring, male turkeys are so preoccupied by the urge to breed that they may respond to the fact that high winds make it harder for them to be seen or heard by prospective mates back in the timber that they spend more time in open fields. Unfortunately, they instinctively know that the sound of their gobbles won’t carry as far as it would under calm conditions, so it’s difficult to get them to move away from their display area even in response to a call. Waterfowl can be an exception to the rule that wind is detrimental to success outdoors. Migrating flocks ride the strong north winds that often accompany cold fronts. By the time these birds reach Missouri, they’re ready to find a place to feed and rest. Crop fields and flooded oak flats provide the former and protected pockets on bodies of water of every type and size provide the latter. Well, I’ve managed to fill my allotted space with ways to make fishing and hunting if not better then at least possible when the wind’s howling. So have I changed my mind? Let me put it this way: I hate wind. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

The History Channel

• On April 6, 1970, Sam Sheppard, a doctor convicted of murdering his pregnant wife in a trial that caused a media frenzy in the 1950s, dies of liver failure. After a decade in prison, Sheppard was found Ònot guiltyÓ in a second trial in 1966. "The Fugitive" television series and movie were rumored to have been loosely inspired by the story.

The City of Sedalia is now offering a price discount on bulk sales of the compost product the City is making at the City’s new compost facility. Why use compost? First, compost has food value (see the table below); second, compost adds organic material and over time will build a rich organic soil; third, it’s just a smart way to recycle!
