2012 CHEVY SONIC 5 DR. LS DENNIS RICH/DEMOCRAT Volunteer cooks Angela Green-Ford, left, and Bill Weigand dish out meals on Monday at the Sedalia Salvation Army's Red Shield Cafe, which now serves about 250 meals per week. By Dennis Rich
By all accounts it was a successful first day of volunteering for Sedalians Bill Weigand and Angela GreenFord as the pair helped prepare a meal for the Sedalia Salvation Army’s Red Shield Cafe. The duo first met Monday morning after deciding to lend a hand at the cafe, which offers a free lunch to those in need. “It is no questions asked,” said Salvation Army VISTA Volunteer Coordinator Sue Foster. “Just come in and eat. The cafe is staffed entirely by volunteers. It’s just a nice time for people to come in and share a meal.” Meals are available through the Red Shield Cafe from noon to 1 p.m., Mondays through Fridays at the Salvation Army’s main office at 1200 E. Broadway Blvd. Organizers also offer a free breakfast from 9 to 9:30 a.m. each Thursday. Weigand, who is unemployed, said he decided to volunteer because he “just felt like helping out.” “I have been unemployed for a while and I was starting to get a little cabin fever. This seemed like a good way to get out and stay busy and maybe help someone else out,” he said. Green-Ford described herself as an “empty-nester” and said she was looking for a way to fill her time during the day, so she approached Foster about volunteer opportunities. “She put me right to work,” Green-Ford said. “I like doing this. It is nice to get out of thinking just about myself, and it just feels good to volunteer.” Multiple diners at the Salvation Army on Monday took the time to stop by the serving window to offer their thanks, and compliments, to the chefs. “This is the best lunch we have ever had,” one man told the pair. Foster said the cafe relies
on volunteers as well as cash, materials and other inkind donations in order to provide some 250 meals a week to those in need. Along with additional cooks, Foster said the Salvation Army is seeking additional volunteers to work in the organization’s food pantry, as well as people willing to perform basic clerical work or to help staff a summer food program for children. The push for additional volunteers comes as a part of the communal VISTA grant awarded to Salvation Army, Amigos de Cristo and the Sedalia Senior Center under their “Minority Outreach of Sedalia” effort. Fellow VISTA volunteer coordinators Brittany Buehrlen, with the Sedalia Senior Center, and Lisa Flores, with Amigos de Cristo, said they are ramping up a wide range of additional volunteer opportunities. Buehrlen said the Senior Center is in need of additional drivers and cooks to help deliver the more than 140 daily meals to homebound and elderly people. She is also hoping to attract seniors and others to a new mentoring program geared at helping Head Start students through reading programs and some tutoring. The Senior Center is also in need of people willing to serve on the existing Service Advisory Board, as well as a new board charged with helping the center come up with a plan for future building projects. Flores said Amigos is looking for people interested in working with children and teens, as well as bilingual adults willing to help teach English language classes. For more information on Salvation Army volunteer opportunities, call Foster at 473-2918. For the Senior Center, call Buehrlen or Flores at 826-2788.

“My ad representative is concerned about my business...”
“Advertising in the Sedalia Democrat publications for the past 12 years has been a key factor in branding Bodyworks Day Spa. Advertising in the Whiteman Warrior has really drawn clients from the base to our business and other businesses in Sedalia. I appreciate the Democrat's revised pricing structure for color advertising, as it is very affordable and invaluable to my business. My ad representative is concerned about my business, not just a commission, and provides me with ads that reflect my personal taste.” -Pam Vaught Bodyworks Day Spa & Boutique

CELEBRITY EXTRA
Q: I read in an interview with James Van Der Beek that he was going to be in a new comedy this year, but I haven't seen anything about it. I know he's in "Franklin and Bash," but I don't think that's what he's talking about. Can you help? -- Violet F., Harrisburg, Pa. A: James was referring to his midseason comedy called "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23," in which he plays a "sort of" version of himself. The series debuts after comedy powerhouse "Modern Family" on April 11 on ABC. The show is about a female odd couple who live together in New York City, with James portraying the best friend of Chloe, the mean-girl roommate. I've seen the pilot and it is very funny, and I love that James is able to parody himself in a non-selfconscious way, and that he isn't afraid to bring up "Dawson's Creek." *** Q: When does the new Snow White movie come out in theaters? - Brandon D., Omaha, Neb. A: That would depend on which Snow White movie you mean. "Mirror Mirror" -- which stars Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, Lily Collins as Snow White and Armie Hammer as Prince Andrew Alcott -- hits theaters on March 30. This film is being billed as family fare, in contrast to the darker "Snow White and the Huntsman." The latter film stars Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna, with Kristen Stewart as Snow White and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman, and will fill the big screens on June 1. "Snow White" is a twist on the fairy tale, in which the Huntsman schools Snow White in the art of war and together they start a rebellion to bring down the Queen. *** Q: I watched a full version of the movie "Dressed to Kill" on TV recently, and I'm positive that Sylvester Stallone played the part of Angie Dickinson's son but was not listed on the credits. Did he use an-
James Van Der Beek other name? -- Lin L., via e-mail A: The part of Angie Dickinson's son, Peter Miller, was played by Keith Gordon, 51, whom I remember best as Jason Melon in "Back to School," the bullied college nerd whose father (played by Rodney Dangerfield) enrolls in college with his son to help him assimilate. In the late '80s, Keith made the move to directing, helming such series as "Wild Palms," "Homicide: Life on the Street," "Dexter" and "House." *** Q: Could you please tell me if "Against the Wall" will be returning? -- Kathleen E., via e-mail A: Despite positive reviews by "New York Daily News," "Los Angeles Times" and "The Hollywood Reporter," Lifetime's cop-drama "Against the Wall" wasn't able to hold enough of its lead-in audience from "Drop Dead Diva" each week, and its ratings slipped from a meager 1.78 million viewers at its premiere to 1.47 million by its season finale. Lifetime opted not to renew the show for a second season. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Potholes Pose Plenty Of Problems
(NAPS)—They lurk on rural highways and city streets, ready to cost you time, trouble and money. They’re potholes, and they occur when water permeates the pavement—usually through a crack from wear and tear of traffic—and softens the soil beneath it, creating a depression in the surface of the street. While most drivers know immediately when they hit a pothole, what they often don’t know is if their vehicle has been damaged in the process. To help determine if hitting a pothole has hurt your vehicle, watch for the following warning signs: •Loss of control, swaying when making routine turns, bottoming out on city streets or bouncing excessively on rough roads. These are indicators that the steering and suspension may have been damaged. The steering and suspension are key safety-related systems. Together, they largely determine your car’s ride and handling. Key components are shocks and struts, the steering knuckle, ball joints, the steering Don’t let your car go to pot: If you hit a rack and box, bearings, seals pothole, have a professional check out and hub units, and tie rod ends. the vehicle. •Pulling in one direction, instead of maintaining a straight path, and uneven tire wear. These symptoms mean there’s an alignment problem. Proper wheel alignment is important for the life span of tires and helps ensure safe handling. •Low tire pressure, bulges or blisters on the sidewalls or dents in the rim. These problems will be visible and should be checked out as soon as possible as tires are the critical connection between your car and the road in all sorts of driving conditions. “Hitting a pothole can cause plenty of problems—damaging tires, wheels, steering and suspension, wheel alignment and more. If you’ve hit a pothole,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council, “it’s worth having a professional technician check out the car and make the necessary repairs to ensure safety and reliability.” The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. Tackling tackle box selection Insert box concept has taken over the market
This week’s mail included a copy of Bass Pro Shops “2012 Spring Angler” catalog, and I’m confident that similar epistles from Cabela’s, Gander Mountain and a host of smaller companies will arrive any day now. I’m beginning to suspect that the no-doubt, well-meaning folks behind this flood of information are trying to convince me that I’m woefully under supplied with fishing tackle. They’re probably right about that, but, in the interest of keeping my spouse from writing a letter to the editor of this publication, I’ll admit that I do have what even many anglers might describe as several hard lures, soft lures, top-water plugs, spoons, jigs, jig trailers, hooks, weights, floats, snaps, leaders, pliers, line cutters and, well, you get the idea. If you’re like me, there’s no need to fret, because the BPS catalog alone has 13 pages devoted to tackle boxes. I was surprised to see how completely the insert box concept has taken over the market. Not that I see anything wrong with that. Far from it. About 25 years ago, Rubbermaid introduced one of the first hard-sided tackle boxes designed to hold removable insert boxes. The company produced outer boxes designed to hold three and seven inserts, and I grabbed up prototypes of both sizes, along with a generous supply of insert boxes. Rubbermaid is no longer in the tackle box business, but plenty of other companies have seized the boxes-within-a-box mantle. The beauty of insert boxes is that they allow an angler to organize his terminal tackle by type. For example, I devote one insert box to each of the following categories: crappie tube bodies, 1/16-ounce safety-pin spinnerbaits, 1/8and 1/4-ounce safety pin spinnerbaits, small top waters, large top waters, mini-crankbaits, wide-wobbling crankbaits, tight-wobbling crankbaits, shallow long minnow crankbaits, deep long minnow crankbaits, lipless crankbaits and whatever lures I’m field-testing at the time. Compartments in the lids of the outer boxes hold, hooks, weights, beads, floats, snaps, etc. Customizing the tackle I take on any given trip is a simple matter of choosing which insert boxes to load. Traditionally, I’ve preferred hard-sided main boxes over soft-sided ones. For general purpose use, especially in my own boat, I haven’t changed my mind. I now use soft-sided, insert-filled tackle bags or binders with soft plastic insert envelopes for plastic worms and large spinnerbaits. Another soft-sided satchel with a shoulder strap has proven ideal for transporting the relatively small amount of tackle needed for hikein pond fishing.
GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman
Despite what I’ve just written and the overwhelming majority of what’s featured in catalogs this year, insert boxes aren’t the only game in town. My main catfish angling tackle box is a classic 16-by-8-by-9-inch box with three attached trays. It will swallow nearly 20 pounds of hooks, weights and other things dear to the heart of a catfisher angler without breaking a sweat. That’s why my bank-walking catfishing “tackle box” is a five-gallon bucket with a padded lid that holds not only a small plastic box of hooks and weights but also a bottle of water, several kinds of bait and a burlap sack “live well.” There are people who are harder for the lure makers to catch than I am. My brother Wayne, for example, keeps all of his go-to-the-river catfish terminal tackle in a 13-by-6-by-7-inch box with a single tray. A similar box with two trays stores everything he uses when fishing for other species. It should be pointed out that he owned a tackle shop for many years, so he could grab anything he thought he might need off the shelf on his way to the river or lake. For many years, my grandfather spent January through March in Corpus Christi, Texas, fishing for speckled trout and redfish. He never felt the need for a tackle box any bigger or fancier than Wayne’s, but then a handful of jigs and a crankbait or two for variety are just about all any inshore angler needs on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Back home in Kansas where channel cats and bullheads were his favorite rod-and-reel species, he didn’t see the need to have any tackle box at all. When he headed for the river that formed the southern and western boundaries of his home place, he stuck a glass medicine bottle containing a few hooks and eggs sinkers in one pocket of his overalls and a cord stringer in another. A three-pound coffee can was big enough to hold all the bait he figured he’d need. It just dawned on me that I’ve made it sound like I might have more tackle than I really need. But wait! Almost everyone who fishes with me seems to feel duty bound to “borrow” things. Those big boxes of tackle in my boat are there strictly to avoid inconveniencing my partners. gjsa@sbcglobal.com

Moments In Time The History Channel
• On Feb. 24, 1786, Wilhelm Karl Grimm, the younger of the two Brothers Grimm, is born in Hanau, Germany. The brothers' collection of oral folktales include "Hansel and Gretel," "Snow White," "Little Red Riding Hood," "Sleeping Beauty" and "Rapunzel."
• On Feb. 25, 1890, Vlacheslav Skryabin, foreign minister for the Soviet Union who took the revolutionary name Molotov, is born in Kurkaka, Russia. Molotov advocated the use of throwing bottles filled with flammable liquid and stuffed with a lit rag at the enemy, and the famous "Molotov cocktail" was born. • On Feb. 26, 1903, Alexander Winton, driving his Winton Bullet, sets the first speed record ever achieved at Daytona Beach, Fla. Built in 1902, the "Bullet Number 1" drove a measured mile at more than 65 mph.
• On Feb. 23, 1945, during the battle for Iwo Jima, U.S. Marines raise the American flag atop Mt. Suribachi, an event captured on film by AP photographer Joe Rosenthal. Although the photograph has long led people to believe that the flag raising was a turning point in the battle, fighting continued for 31 more days. • On Feb. 22, 1950, Walt Disney's animated feature "Cinderella" opens. Based on a fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm, "Cinderella" featured songs like "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and became one of Disney's most beloved films.
• On Feb. 20, 1986, France and Britain announce that a tunnel under the English Channel linking the two countries would soon become a reality. Trains, cars and buses would be able to speed through the tunnel in less than half an hour. Construction began in December 1987, and the "chunnel" was finally completed in 1994. • On Feb. 21, 1994, CIA operative Aldrich Ames is arrested for selling secrets to the Soviet Union. At least 10 men were killed after Ames revealed their identities, and more were sent to Russian gulags. Both Ames and his wife were later convicted. Ames was sentenced to life in prison while his wife, as part of a plea-bargain agreement, was given a five-year sentence. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc,
