(NAPS)—U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood recently announced the launch of a series of new public service announcements (PSAs) released in partnership with the Ad Council that promote child car safety among parents of children ages newborn to 12. According to the Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 12 years old. From 2006 to 2010, 4,028 children ages 12 and younger were killed in crashes and another estimated 660,000 children were injured in crashes involving a passenger vehicle. However, NHTSA reports that child restraints in the vehicle saved the lives of an estimated 9,611 children ages 4 and younger from 1975 to 2010. “While safety is our top priority for everyone on our roadways, we’re calling on parents to do everything they can to protect our most vulnerable passengers,” said Secretary LaHood. “These new public service announcements will encourage parents to choose the right seat for their children A new website encourages careand properly secure them every time givers to learn how to select, install they get behind the wheel.” and use the correct child safety seat. Working with the Ad Council as part of an ongoing campaign to ensure child car safety, NHTSA unveiled new PSAs that will air on television, radio, online and in outdoor advertising nationwide. “The Right Seat” effort aims to make sure all parents and caregivers are properly securing children ages 12 and under in the right car restraint (rear-facing, forward-facing, booster, seat belt) for their age and size. Targeting parents and caregivers who think their children are already using the right car seats, the key message of the PSAs is “Parents who really know it all, know for sure their child is in the right car seat.” “The proper use of a child seat is the most effective way to keep a child safe in a moving vehicle,” said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. “Parents and caregivers should always use a child seat and, based on NHTSA’s updated guidelines, should keep their children in their current seats for as long as possible before moving them up to the next type of seat.” Coinciding with the release of the new PSAs, NHTSA also launched “Parents Central,” a new one-stop-shop website with tools and resources for keeping children safe in and around cars. For more than 25 years, the Ad Council and NHTSA have worked together on consumer safety PSA campaigns. Previous campaigns targeted individual stages of child passenger safety; i.e., the LATCH system, booster seats and seat belts. The English-language PSAs were created pro bono by advertising agency Gotham, Inc. “We are proud to partner with Secretary LaHood, Administrator Strickland and NHTSA to extend our more than 25-year partnership with NHTSA by releasing new PSAs that address the absolute importance of child car safety,” said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council. Me and Joan went fishing In the writing trade, articles in which the author relates his and his companion’s experiences are known as “me and Joe stories. In the interest of literal accuracy, this is not a me and Joe story. It’s a me and Joan story. Amber and I and Joan and Al Hunter have been the best of friends for at least two decades. The four of us get together several times a year to eat home-cooked meals, to play cribbage and to process venison. We even took a week-long vacation in Canada together a number of years ago. But we aren’t a fishing foursome, because Al is one of those silly people who would rather watch grass grow than wait for a bobber to wiggle, and Amber’s interest in fishing seems to wane with every passing year. Joan, on the other hand, is (almost) as crazy about fishing as I am. All of that being the case, Al and Amber don’t worry when Joan and I take off together with our fishing rods and tackle boxes in hand. To the contrary, they breathe a sigh of relief. Joan and I went fishing a few days ago. More specifically, we trailered my boat down to the Big Tebo Creek arm of Truman Lake in pursuit of crappie. I’ve always believed that one good way to find out if a person is a hardcore angler is to ask him or her to meet you at 5 a.m. Joan was early, which was fine with me, because I wanted to be at the Windsor Crossing boat ramp no later than 5:30 a.m. Alas, when we got to Lincoln, neither Baker’s Bait and Tackle (660-547-3350) nor Pandora’s Happy Box Bait Shop (660-547-2452) were open. (I’ve since learned that both shops are keeping “banker’s hours and are not opening until 5:30 a.m. this summer.) The delay notwithstanding, we were on the water and on our way down the lake only a few minutes after 6 a.m. The newly risen sun was just beginning to kiss the bluffs on the western shore, and there was only a light breeze blowing. In other words, it was a more than sufficiently beautiful morning to make just being there worth getting up early. Our first stop was at “Wayne’s tree, a brushy tangle named in honor of my brother. It had been a super hotspot in 2011, so I wasn’t surprised when Joan swung a keeper over the side of the boat before I had managed to get a bait in the water. I was surprised that another 10 minutes produced only one more nonkeeper for Joan and nothing at all for me. Joan dubbed the next treetop we tied to the “Golden Triangle, partly because of the position of its three emergent stobs, but mostly because of the crappie she was extracting from it hand over fist. I didn’t tell her, of course, but I was beginning to think it might be best if I just ran the boat and stayed out of

her way. Fortunately, before I could convert those thoughts to action, the crappie started to find my minnows too. About then, the wind increased to the point it made handling the boat and detecting subtle bites difficult. This would have been seriously irritating — at least to me — had the fish not been biting so well. As it was, we soldiered on, and our fish count kept creeping ever closer to the daily limit. Constraints on my time forced us to quit three fish short of our limit. In our defense, if we would have concentrated more on our lines and less on our near-constant conversation, both of us probably would have hooked more fish, and Joan definitely wouldn’t have lost as many at boatside as she did. But that was OK. Our primary goal was to enjoy the morning, and that’s exactly what we did. Come to think of it, if my male fishing buddies and I spent more time talking and enjoying the scenery and less time taking the act of fishing so seriously, we might have more fun whether the fish were biting or not. Oh well, it was just a thought. •

Exotic wildlife, a topic I’ve already covered in two columns this year, refuses to go away. A proposed new regulation would ban the sale of live crayfish by bait shops or other commercial entities. This is due to what seems to be justifiable fears that exotic crayfish species could inadvertently find their way into bait shop tanks and from there into ecosystems where they have the potential to cause serious damage. Individual anglers would still be able to catch their own crayfish from Missouri waters and then use them for bait. There was a petition protesting the new regulation on the counter at Pandora’s where we bought our minnows. I readily admit that I would miss being able to buy crayfish, because I’ve often done so in the past. On the other hand, I can’t in good conscience oppose anything that might, for once, be in time to stop yet another onslaught on our waters by what, in this case, is actually a group of closely related exotic species.

When Catherine failed to produce a male heir, Henry divorced her against the will of the Roman Catholic Church. • On June 15, 1877, Henry Ossian Flipper, born a slave in Thomasville, Ga., in 1856, becomes the first black cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Flipper was never spoken to by a white cadet during his four years at West Point. • On June 16, 1884, the first roller coaster in America opens at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Known as a switchback railway, it traveled approximately 6 mph and cost a nickel to ride.

• On June 12, 1942, Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl living in Amsterdam, receives a diary for her 13th birthday. A month later, she and her family went into hiding from the Nazis in rooms behind her father's office. Anne's diary, detailing their two years in hiding, was published in 1947. • On June 14, 1951, the U.S. Census Bureau dedicates UNIVAC, the world's first commercially produced electronic digital computer. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. The roots of the Miranda decision go back to 1963 when Ernesto Miranda confessed to a crime and later recanted, unaware that he didn't have to say anything at all.

• On June 17, 1972, five of President Richard Nixon's re-election employees are arrested for burglary in the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington, D.C. Moments In Time The History Channel

• On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire becomes the ninth and last necessary state to ratify the Constitution of the United States, thereby making the document the law of the land. Massachusetts had initially opposed the document as it failed to reserve undelegated powers to the states. • On June 23, 1902, German automaker Daimler-MotorenGesellschaft (DMG) first registers "Mercedes" as a brand name. The famous Mercedes symbol, a three-point star, was registered as a trademark in 1909.

• On June 24, 1915, young German fighter pilot Oswald Boelcke makes the first operational flight of the Fokker Eindecker plane. The Fokker was equipped with machine guns that could fire straight ahead through the aircraft's propellers. The precise timing of the propeller blades allowed them to avoid being struck by the machine gun bullets.

• On June 18, 1923, the first Checker Cab rolls off the line at the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company in Kalamazoo, Mich. The shipment stood out as a major landmark in the history of the company, which by then employed some 700 people. • On June 19, 1953, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviets, are executed by the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in Ossining, N.Y. Both refused to admit any wrongdoing and proclaimed their innocence right up to the time of their deaths. • On June 22, 1964, Dan Brown, author of the international blockbuster ÒThe Da Vinci CodeÓ as well as other best-selling thrillers, is born in New Hampshire. BrownÕs novels are known for involving symbols, conspiracies and secret societies. His first novel, ÒDigital Fortress,Ó was published in 1998. • On June 20, 1980, in a match in Montreal, Roberto Duran out-points "Sugar" Ray Leonard to win the World Boxing Council welterweight title. Yet, five months later in a rematch, with less than 30 seconds left in the eighth round, Duran looked at the referee and famously uttered the words "no mas" or "no more," giving up.

Q: When will my favorite show, "Leverage," be back with new episodes? -- Paul T., via e-mail A: The premiere of season five of the hit TNT show will be Sunday, July 15, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. This year brings 10 allnew episodes starring your favorite gang of thieves, grifters and con artists led by Academy Award-winner Timothy Hutton, along with Gina Bellman, Christian Kane, Beth Riesgraf and Aldis Hodge. This season promises to deliver high action and intrigue -- and maybe some more romance -- as well as big-name guest stars, such as Cary Elwes and Treat Williams. *** Q: Is it true that Matthew McConaughey finally tied the knot? -Tina R., via e-mail A: Lustful ladies all over the world had to give up the dream of becoming Mrs. M. in early June, when Matthew married longtime girlfriend -- and mother of son Levi, 3, and daughter Vida, 2 -- Camilla Alves in an intimate ceremony at the couple's home in Austin, Texas. *** Q: What's next for the beautiful Andie MacDowell? It seems I see her only on hair color/make-up commercials anymore, and I really miss seeing her in movies. -- Britta, Fairview, Mich. A: Andie just started production in midJune on the new Hallmark Channel original series "Cedar Cove," which is based on the best-selling book series of the same name by Debbie Macomber. Andie will star as Judge Olivia Lockhart, whose Cedar Cove Municipal Court is the professional milieu and social microcosm of issues the judge will face in her own day-to-day life with family and friends. The series kicks off with a twohour pilot, scheduled to air at the end of the year, with a weekly one-hour series to follow in early 2013. *** Readers: For your summertime reading pleasure, I want to give one lucky reader a copy of Rebecca Bloom's "Eat, Drink and Be Married." me at letters@cindyelavsky.com or send a letter to Cindy Elavsky, King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475 by July 31, and tell me your favorite beach read. This contest isn't just for the ladies, although many beach books are classified as "chick lit." I asked Rebecca if it bothered her to have books pigeonholed as "chick lit." She told me: "I was offended by it before, but because I thought, 'Why does it have to be classified?' But now I'm much more of a realist than when I started writing, and you have to do whatever you can to market your book. It's a way to classify and sell, and ultimately, that's what any writer should want. So, I'm not as against it. I don't think there's anything wrong with celebrating women with your writing. 'The Help' was awesome, and that was a chick flick and chick lit, so if my book is classified as chick lit, that's fine with me." (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.
