Scott Balke, a Sedalia Middle School custodian, has been named the Sedalia School District 200 Associate of the Year by the Sedalia Community Educators Association.

10 OFF

If you get to hear custodian Scott Balke’s Elvis Presley impersonation, consider yourself fortunate. “That’s only for my closest friends,” he said, with a grin. But just seconds later, in the main office at Sedalia Middle School, he belted out, “Well, since my moppy left me,” to the tune of “Heartbreak Hotel.” “He’s really pretty good,” said administrative assistant Karen Benson. “We’re lucky to have him here.” Balke feels fortunate to be there and to have been named the Sedalia Community Educators Association Associate of the Year for 2012. He received the honor Monday afternoon during the SCEA winter meeting at the Heckart Performing Arts Center at Smith-Cotton High School. Balke said he was surprised enough when he was named the middle school’s outstanding associate, but was overwhelmed when he won the district honor. Chris Pyle, assistant principal at the middle school, said: “We were very happy for him. We feel he is very deserving. He always gives his best, and is the kind of employee you would hope to have — not only for staff, but for students, as well.” The students’ reactions are what hit home most for Balke. He said they streamed up to congratulate him and tell him “you’re the best custodian.” “That was very rewarding,” he said. “It’s great to know you are making a difference in kids’ lives. If the staff and kids think a lot of you, you are doing something right. Balke’s dedication to the building’s students is what prompted administrative assistant Phelessia Hughes to write the letter nominating him for the honor. “That man goes above and beyond for these students. He never hesitates to

help a child,” she said. “He tries to learn all of the students’ names, he wants to make them feel important. I love that about him.” Balke has been at the middle school for two years, after working at both old and new Smith-Cotton High School buildings and at Parkview Elementary. He has enjoyed the chance to move around in the district, since it has given him the opportunity to meet more people. His busiest time of day is during the school’s six lunch periods, as he empties quickly filling trash cans and wipes down tables. Hughes said Balke cleans up any mess a person can imagine without ever complaining, and when summoned to deal with such an issue he always says, “I’ll be right there.” Pyle said Balke takes a lot of pride in his job. “Mr. Balke and (head custodian Jeanie Mosier), as well, are the first ones in building in the morning, and they make sure our building is safe for us to start.” Pyle said. “During the day as issues arise ... he is the first person we call to keep running a safe school.” Hughes said Balke has made a positive impression in his short time in at the middle school, in large measure due to his “cheerful heart.” Balke admitted that in some places, the custodian position is looked down on. But not at Sedalia Middle School, where the students get to know them; Balke said he has even had students show him their grade cards so they could share their successes with him. Balke has three children who attend school in Stover. He keeps them in mind as he does his job at the middle school. “I keep it as clean as I would want it to be if they were going to school here,” he said.

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: Like most of the world, I was shocked and devastated to hear of Whitney Houston's death. I really thought she was on the right path, and about to make a music and movie comeback. Did drugs play a part in her death? -- Deena R., via e-mail A: While there has been no official word as of this writing, TMZ is reporting that according to family sources, Whitney, 48, was killed by a combination of Xanax and other prescription drugs mixed with alcohol. Although she did die in the bathtub, the family was told by the coroner's office that there didn't appear to be enough water in her lungs for drowning to have been the cause of death. The L.A. Police Department has determined that there were no signs of foul play. Whitney will star posthumously in the feature film "Sparkle," which is slated for an Aug. 12 release. She also recorded two songs for the movie, which will, of course, be on the soundtrack. *** Q: I really love watching "Chelsea Lately" and "After Lately" on E! The shows' casts really seem to have fun and get along. Please tell me this is the case! --George T., Altoona, Pa. A: That certainly is the case. I spoke with series star Heather McDonald recently, and she told me: "We really do laugh all the time, and we really do like each other so much. So many times we'll be laughing about something and I'll just go, 'Oh, don't we have fun?' I think it all stems from the example that Chelsea (Handler) has set, and I think that's important. We're like a little family where she's the Mom, and she doesn't allow jealousy, and she doesn't allow any real kind of unhealthy competition in any way. We truly believe that each of our success only helps the other." And following Chelsea's example of getting into the publishing industry, Heather has written her own NYT bestselling humorous memoir called "You'll Never Blue Ball in This Town Again," and I have to say, the book is deliciously funny. *** Q: Is it true that two of my favorite

Heather McDonald

comedians, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis, are making a movie together? - Samuel D., via e-mail A: It is indeed true, and I couldn't be happier to see these two onscreen together. Will and Zach star in "Dogfight," a comedy about two battling politicians from South Carolina who each have presidential aspirations. The movie is set to premiere Aug. 10, and also co-stars Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott, Dan Aykroyd and John Lithgow. *** Q: "Harry's Law" seems to have vanished. What's up? -- Echo H., via email A: There has been a little shuffling over at NBC. At the end of January, "Harry's Law" took about six weeks off. But don't worry, Kathy Bates and company will return with new episodes March 11 on its new night and timeslot, Sundays at 8 p.m. ET. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Anglers weren’t always hooked on fishing Feb. 22-23, 2012

SouthPlainsman.com

People were angling long before hooks were introduced

The most treasured gift I received this past Christmas was a book by John Buckland titled “The Fisherman’s Companion.” Its profuse illustrations of paintings by 18th and 19th century artists would earn it a place on the coffee tables of many a nonfisherman, but the book’s first chapter, “Fishing for Pleasure,” hooked me. Buckland postulates that “a close-packed rank of humans encircling the fish and driving them into the bank” may have been the first deliberate fishing tactic. He also notes that this method is still being used in the islands of the Central and South Pacific, albeit more for subsistence than for recreation. Specialized fishing spears are another form of fishing tackle that precedes recorded history by uncounted millennia. Barbed multi-pronged fishing spears are depicted in some of the oldest cave paintings yet discovered. By the time of the earliest Mediterranean and Chinese civilizations, spear heads were being made of metal and closely resembled those in use today. Period artwork depicts royalty engaged in what was obviously recreational spear fishing. Buckland devotes a couple of paragraphs to weirs, nets, traps and poison, all of which have been and continue to be in use for subsistence fishing in various parts of the world, including North America. While Buckland admits, “There may well be an element of enjoyment and satisfaction about these methods of catching fish,” they fail to meet his definition of sport, because they’re not “undertaken primarily for the pleasure of it.” Buckland comes to hooks, which he believes are the key to fishing becoming a recreational pursuit. He may be right, since curved hooks were once called “angles,” which explains why angler became a synonym for fisherman. Curved hooks predate the term angle by at least 20,000 years, when bone began to supplant materials like thorns, stone and shells to make hooks. A cross-section of a large bone offered a naturally rounded shape, a section of which could easily be shaped into a curved hook capable of both penetration and retention. Bronze hooks, both with and without barbs, have been found dating back to about

6,000 BC. Eyed hooks have been found in Mesopotamia, but for reasons Buckland doesn’t explain, they fell so out of favor that ultraconservative Victorian era writers like George Kelson railed “against ‘new-fangled and useless’ eyed hooks.” Whether eyed or not, hooks would indeed be useless without line and, for recreational purposes, nearly so without rods. I suspect that when Egyptian pharaohs and Chinese emperors cross paths in angler heaven, fierce arguments erupt over who should get credit for inventing lines, rods and lures intended for recreational fishing. Egyptians could point out that scenes of rod-and-line fishing appear in tombs dating back to at least 730 BC. The Chinese could counter by noting that cane rods, silk lines and gold hooks adorned with feathers were in use during the Chou Dynasty (1027-221 BC.) Fishing flourished, but technology slept until the Chinese began using reels during the Sung Dynasty (960-1280 AD.) By way of comparison, the first reference to the use of reels in England occurred in 1651, two years before the publication of Izaak Walton’s “The Compleat Angler.” From those ever-so-humble beginnings sprang the sport of fishing as we know it today. I think Izaak Walton would be proud. On the other hand, Ankhsheshnon, the ancient Egyptian who wrote, “If a gardener becomes a fisherman, his trees perish,” might well say, “I told you so.” • On a completely different subject, I hope everyone got to see the “Community Snapshot” Carla Childers submitted for the Feb. 8 edition of the Democrat. The photo catches Cal Childers a split second before he pitches a fastball toward an off camera batter. Photoshopped into his right hand to replace the ball is a gigantic pill bug to which a tail has been attached. The first sentence of the caption reads, “Yes Gerald Scott, there are live armadillos in Missouri!” Nice try, Ms. Childers. Your creative efforts will no doubt fool a lot of people. But not me! gjsa@sbcglobal.net

(NAPS)—We have all experienced it. You are at your favorite restaurant anticipating a great meal, but when you take your first taste, you realize something isn’t right. The chef was in a hurry and left out one of the key seasonings—salt. You reach for the salt- shaker and sprinkle on some to adjust the taste to your liking. Or maybe you’ve had the opposite experience. Your meal arrives and it is way too salty so you send it back. Whether you knew it or not, the simple act of adjusting the seasoning is similar to what toxicologists routinely do—determining the right amount of an ingredient or chemical to use and predicting the effects of chemicals based on how much is used. Too little and it doesn’t do what it is intended to do. Too much and it is unpleasant or potentially harmful. This simple experiment also dictates the way we use chemicals in every aspect of our life, from the vitamins and drugs we take to maintain or improve our health, to the use of preservatives to prevent spoilage in food we eat or products we use. Understanding how the chemical is used is important but understanding the response is crucial. The question we need to ask about how much salt is too much is related to health effects, so meaJust as a little salt can suring changes in blood pressure with increasing amounts of salt used may be make a big difference in the more critical thing to test. In each your food, the amount is case, we are looking to relate the amount important in many aspects we used with the effects we experience of science, especially to a toxicologist. in an attempt to find the right balance. The use of dose-response can also be used to predict effects on the environment. The amount of exhaust from the car you drive makes a difference in the concentration in the air in the community. In an urban setting, the number of cars is much greater and the concentration of automobile exhaust in the air would be expected to increase. If levels of exhaust in the air get too high, it becomes unpleasant and possibly unhealthy. The amount released and the effect on air quality is predicted based on the number of cars in an area (dose) and the health effects observed (response) and is used by government agencies such as the EPA to set community air quality standards. Both the dose and response are critical for this concept to be useful. Knowing how much we used without knowing the effect does us no good and knowing effects without knowing the amount that caused the effect is likewise not useful. However, together, these two elements provide us all with a powerful tool for making decisions that impact our health and environment.

• On March 9, 1913, English author Virginia Woolf delivers the manuscript of her first novel, "The Voyage Out," to her publisher. In 1941, fearful for her own mental state and afraid of the coming world war, she filled her pockets with rocks and drowned herself. • On March 7, 1923, the New Republic publishes Robert Frost's poem "Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening." The poem begins with the famous line "Whose woods these are, I think I know." Although Frost never graduated from a university, he had collected 44 honorary degrees before he died in 1963. • On March 5, 1963, the Hula-Hoop, a hip-swiveling toy that became a huge fad across America when it was first marketed by Wham-O in 1958, is patented by the company's co-founder, Arthur "Spud" Melin. An estimated 25 million Hula-Hoops were sold in its first four months of production alone.

• On March 11, 1970, author Erle Stanley Gardner, creator of Perry Mason, dies. The crime-solving attorney Perry Mason appeared in numerous novels and became the star of a top-rated TV show starting in 1957. The show starred Raymond Burr as the titular hero and ran for nine years.

• On March 8, 1986, "Mask," starring Eric Stoltz and Cher, opens in theaters. Cher, who had launched a serious acting career with her appearance in Robert Altman's film "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" in 1982, received the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in "Mask."
