was a domestic-Peace Corps. “Elvera (Satterwhite, who wrote the Sedalia VISTA grant) and I talked years ago about getting a VISTA program for Sedalia,” Foster said. “When we got the grant, everything just fell into place.” “When we started talking about the VISTA grant and how it could be used, I knew right away that the Salvation Army should be a part of it,” said Salvation Army Major Mark Haslett. “We’re always looking to recruit and train new volunteers and having Sue around is an incredible asset.” Like many volunteers, Foster’s day-to-day schedule varies with November and December being very busy months with events including a Christmas dinner and the aforementioned bell-ringing. “We’ll have an Easter dinner and then get really busy with our summer food program,” she said. “That’s been a great success. The first year we served 14,000 meals and last year it was 20,000. By our count, we’ll serve at least that many this year, probably more.” Foster said she’s seen an increase in the number of Sedalia and Pettis County residents looking for help at the Salvation Army, specifically the meal programs. Right now she and the other VISTAs are brainstorming ways to bring meals to people in rural areas who may not be able to get to the Salvation Army location in Sedalia. “There are of course already the Meals on Wheels program and other homebound meal delivery services in town,” Foster said. “So we’re trying to find some way to compliment those. Just another ongoing project of ours.” “Sue keeps very busy, that’s for sure,” Haslett said. “It seems like the more we’re able to do in the community, the more we find we need to do. With Sue’s expertise in finding new volunteers, we’ve really been able to expand and maintain some of our programs.” Foster said she plans to renew her VISTA grant to continue working at the Salvation Army but even after the grant runs out, she’ll keep volunteering. “You know, even as a kid, I just felt my reason for being here, my job, was to get people involved,” she said. “Being a VISTA is such a nice compliment to that, I’m surprised I didn’t do it before now.”

SYDNEY BRINK/DEMOCRAT Vista volunteer coordinator Sue Foster, right, recruits volunteers needed to staff the various charitable programs offered by the Salvation Army. She enlisted the help of Sandy Clark, left, and Amanda Biggs, center, last week to cook the free meal offered at the Salvation Army's Soup Kitchen on 1200 E. Broadway Boulevard.

Long-time Sedalia resident Sue Foster’s children are tired of ringing the bells. “It’s gotten to the point where, if I call them before the holidays start, they tell me right off, ‘I’m not doing the bells this year, Mom,’ ” Foster said with a good-natured laugh. “I guess they have a point. My son is in the Marines and my daughter is going to nursing school. They’ve probably rung enough bells to last a lifetime by this point.” The bells Foster is referring to are the Salvation Army hand bells volunteers ring every Christmas season to solicit donations to the charity’s infamous red kettles. Foster has been a volunteer for the Salvation Army, and other charities around town, for the past 10 years and this year is one of five VISTA volunteers. Foster serves as the volunteer coordinator for the Sedalia location of the Salvation Army, a job she thrives at. “It helps that I’ve been a volunteer so many other places, I already know people,” she joked. As the VISTA volunteer coordinator, Foster is in charge of recruiting, training and helping place volunteers. The key, she said, is finding what volunteers like to do. “I think a major problem with people not wanting to volunteer, or wanting to but not knowing where to start, is that a lot of people think volunteering is just serving meals or candy striping,” Foster said. “Yes, we serve meals here everyday so that means we need people who love to cook. Or, if you enjoy spending time with children, there are tutoring programs around town. Ideally, the volunteer does something they already love to do. They’re more likely to keep volunteering that way.” Sometimes that means sending people to a different charitable agency, Foster said. “It doesn’t matter where you volunteer. If you’re thinking about volunteering at the Salvation Army, but then realize you’d be more useful, and you’d enjoy yourself more, at a place like Boys and Girls Club, well, why would that matter? Just as long as you’re helping people, that’s what counts,” Foster said. Foster first got involved in VISTA through the Pettis County Community Partnership. She’d always loved the idea of the Peace Corps, she said, and found that VISTA

PHOTO: Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin

Q: I got completely hooked on HBO's "Game of Thrones," and I can't wait until it returns for its second season. Would you know when that might be? -- Brad F., via e-mail A: Well, Brad, I just happen to have that little nugget of info -- and I am willing to share. The next season of the medieval-fantasy series begins (no fooling) April 1 at 9 p.m., and like the first season, the second season will be 10 episodes long. And Lena Headey (who plays Ceresei) tells us that season two will bring even more drama (Is that possible?). The show also stars Peter Dinklage as Tyrion, Emilia Clarke as Daenerys, Nikolai Coster-Waldau as Jaime, Kit Harington as Jon and Michelle Fairley as Catelyn. *** Q: I'm confused: First I heard Marg Helgenberger is leaving "CSI" for good, then I heard she's not, and now I hear she is again. Can you clear this up for me? -- Constance D., Newport, Conn. A: I'll try. Marg, who left the top-rated CBS crime drama at the end of January, is pretty much gone -- as a regular castmember. However, her character's future has been left open so Marg can return for a guest appearance, if she wishes. Marg assures her fans that they haven't seen the last of Catherine Willows: "That was one of the reasons why it was a little easier for me to leave the show, because the producers said to me practically every day that the door is wide open. If I'm available and I'm up for it, you betcha." *** Q: I remember seeing pictures of Julianne Moore in some entertainment magazines dressed up as Sarah Palin. Was that for a movie? If so, when will it be out? I'd love to see it. -- Margaret W., via e-mail A: Julianne does indeed star as the 2008 vice-presidential hopeful in the HBO movie "Game Change," which is based on the 2010 book of the same

Julianne Moore as Sarah Palin

name. The movie premieres on Saturday, March 10, and also stars Ed Harris as Sen. John McCain and Woody Harrelson as campaign chair Steve Schmidt, along with Peter MacNicol, Sarah Paulson and Ron Livingston. The movie will mainly track the actions of the Republican Party during the 2008 elections, while the book devotes equal time to both Republicans and Democrats. *** Q: I am dying to find out who killed Rosie Larson! When will "The Killing" return? -- Darla A., Portland, Ore. A: Hang in there just a few more months, Darla! Sunday, April 1 marks the return of the suspense drama to AMC with a two-hour premiere starting at 8/7c. The following week, the series returns to its normal timeslot of 9/8c. If you need to catch up or want to refresh your memory, you can see the entire 13-episode first season On Demand starting Monday, March 5. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Sending A Message About Texting While Driving

(NAPS)—Young adults live in a constantly connected world where multitasking is ingrained in their DNA. Realizing that this behavior becomes dangerous when young adults text behind the wheel, the State Attorneys General, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Ad Council are launching a new texting and driving prevention public service advertising (PSA) campaign aimed at 16–24-year-old drivers. The message is simple: When you text and drive, you’re not multitasking— you’re driving blind. Consider the following: • 82 percent of young adult drivers ages 16 to 24 have read a standard text message while driving, according to a national survey conducted by the Ad Council (2011). • An online survey of 1,999 teens ages 16 to 19 found that 86 percent had driven while distracted even though 84 percent know it’s dangerous (2010). •23 is the average number of texts per month that teens who text and drive admit to sending (2010). Distracted Driving NHTSA reports that distractA study shows that a texting driver is 23 ed driving is the No. 1 killer of American teens (2007). 16 percent times more likely to get into a crash than of all drivers younger than 20 a nontexting driver. involved in fatal crashes were reported to have been distracted while driving (2009). The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) reports that a texting driver is 23 times more likely to get into a crash than a nontexting driver (2009). “Distracted driving is dangerous and, tragically, teen drivers are the most at risk of being involved in a fatal distracted driving crash,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. A New Campaign To address this issue, the State Attorneys General and Consumer Protection agencies, NHTSA and the Ad Council unveiled new PSAs created pro bono by New York advertising agency The Concept Farm. They are designed to communicate the dangers of texting and driving to teens and young adults. By taking their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, they are making the roads less safe for themselves, their passengers and other drivers. All the PSAs direct audiences to StopTextsStopWrecks.org, a new campaign website where teens and young adults can find facts about the dangers of texting while driving and tips on how to curb the behavior. The website also has an area where individuals can post and share on Facebook the actions they are taking to stop texting and driving. To learn more, visit www.StopTextsStopWrecks.org.

Moments In Time The History Channel

• On Jan. 28, 1855, the Panama Railway, which carried thousands of unruly miners to California via the dense jungles of Central America, dispatches its first train across the Isthmus of Panama. The track went through Panamanian jungle roughly along the route followed by the present-day canal. • On Jan. 24, 1908, the Boy Scouts movement begins in England with the publication of the first installment of Robert Baden-Powell's Scouting for Boys. In September 1909, 10,000 Scouts showed up at the first national Boy Scout meeting in London.

• On Jan. 27, 1926, John Logie Baird, a Scottish inventor, gives the first public demonstration of a true television system in London. The "televisor" used mechanical rotating disks to scan moving images into electronic impulses, which were transmitted by cable to a screen. • On Jan. 29, 1936, the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., elects its first members: Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Matthewson and Walter Johnson. The Hall of Fame has elected 296 individuals in all.

• On Jan. 23, 1968, the U.S. intelligence-gathering ship Pueblo is seized by the North Korean navy and charged with spying and violating territorial waters. Negotiations to free the 83-man crew of the U.S. ship took nearly a year. The crewmen reported horrific treatment at the hands of the North Koreans. • On Jan. 26, 1979, "The Dukes of Hazard," a television comedy about two good-old boys in the rural South and their souped-up 1969 Dodge Charger known as General Lee, debuts on CBS. The show was known for its car chases, stunts and General Lee, which had an orange paint job and a Confederate flag across its roof.

• On Jan. 25, 1980, on arrival at Tokyo's Narita International Airport, Beatle Paul McCartney is found to be carrying nearly half a pound of marijuana in his baggage -- an amount he assured Japanese authorities was intended solely for his personal use. Facing a seven-year prison sentence, McCartney was instead released and quickly deported from Japan. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc,

Are armadillos in state for real? 660-882-7413

I’ve long been suspicious that Mother Nature takes perverse pleasure in confounding even the most reasonable theories promulgated by biologists, naturalists, outdoor communicators and other real or self-appointed experts. If I’m right, the case of the unadaptable nine-banded armadillo has to be among her favorites. One of several species of tropical and subtropical armadillos, the nine-banded first crossed the Mexican border into the United States late in the 19th century. Whether they were acting as advance scouts for Pancho Villa or were simply curious about why so many more human tracks led north than south has been lost to history. What is certain is that they liked what they saw well enough to begin making the transition from pioneers to settlers. It was an easy transition for the species to make. A female armadillo reaches sexual maturity at one year of age and can give birth to one set of identical quadruplets each year for the remainder of her 12- to 15-year lifetime. Predators, including humans, have little interest in making them a major part of their diets. Biologists determined that nine-banded armadillos had low metabolic rates and an underdeveloped thermoregulation system. Since these closely related facts of armadillo genetics had been imprinted on the species for umpteen million years, who could blame anyone who predicted that the species could not advance any meaningful distance into the United States? Not realizing that expanding their North American range was physiologically impossible, armadillos had conquered Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida by 1995. By 2005, the by-now admittedly amazingly adaptable armored vagabond had added Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, North and South Carolina, Georgia and the southern halves of Nebraska, Illinois and Indiana to its home range. As of now, armadillos are expected to colonize Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and all points south in the eastern United States. While no state has welcomed the armadillo with open arms, the animal’s official status varies. In Missouri the nine-banded armadillo is classified as a non-native invasive species (other examples include starlings and English sparrows) and is not protected under the auspices of the Wildlife Code. So far I’ve reported what I’ve learned from other sources. Based on my lack of observa-

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

tions, the armadillo is a fictional creature. I’m pretty sure there’s a factory hidden somewhere in the swamps of southern Louisiana that turns out thousands of phony armadillos, which are manufactured by stuffing thoroughly dead possums into half-crushed snapping turtle shells. Highway departments in the South then strew these unrealistic fakes on highway shoulders to fool tourists. Despite the fact that Missouri drivers run over thousands of real animals every year — including a few formerly imaginary mountain lions — the Missouri Department of Transportation has apparently decided to join the armadillo charade. I’ve seen two examples of their efforts along U.S. Highway 65 between here and Warsaw, but both were overly flattened and not impressive. On the other hand, Sydney Brink, who’s among the most talented news photographers I know, showed me a photo he shot of an ersatz armadillo he found lying in the gutter near Broadway Boulevard and Park Avenue. It was amazingly realistic. But then Sydney could make a photo of an old boot look good. I know it’s silly, but just for the sake of argument, let’s assume I’m wrong and that armadillos really do exist right here in the Show-Me State. They would dine almost exclusively on insects. That sounds like a good thing, and it would be, too, were it not for the fact that armadillos prefer bugs that they can root out of the top few inches of soil covering lawns, gardens, terraces and other locations the owners of which would prefer remained undisturbed. A booklet put out by the Missouri Department of Conservation suggests that the owners of lawns under attack by armadillos stop watering their grass in order to make it less attractive to four-footed bulldozers. That might work, but since an armadillo could burrow through a gravel road if it wanted to, I wouldn’t count on it. To my way of thinking, a far more practical solution would be to shoot the offending Hoover hogs. After all, they taste just like pork. gjsa@sbcglobal.net
