Life lessons Mentors such asTroy Sharp help students with social skills alongwithschoolwork

“Sit”

“Sit”

“Sit”

PHOTOS BY SYDNEY BRINK/DEMOCRAT Troy Sharp, a volunteer mentor at Washington Elementary School, spends a lunch period Thursday with his assigned student, first-grader Tristan Allred. The Pepsi-Cola warehouse manager is in his second year of mentoring Tristan but mentored another student three years previously.

“Sit” “Sit” “Good dog!” The more often a consumer sees your advertising message, the better your chances are that they will remember you when they’re ready to buy!

While other students have each other to talk to during lunch, Tristan has the focused attention of his mentor. By Bob Satnan

Tristan Allred was digging into his spaghetti lunch when he realized he had some marinara sauce on his face. He brought his arm up to wipe his mouth with his sleeve — a natural reaction for a boy in first grade — when Troy Sharp encouraged him to use a napkin instead. With Tristan’s shirt saved from the red menace, the pair then chatted about bicycles and Tristan’s realization that he should have added a request for a new bike helmet to the letter to Santa he and Sharp worked on earlier that morning. Sharp, warehouse manager at Pepsi-Cola, is a volunteer mentor at Washington Elementary School. He has been part of the program for five years; he and Tristan were paired up last year when Tristan was in kindergarten. “Sometimes we do basic stuff on the computer, sometimes we go to the library and he reads to me,” Sharp said. “And sometimes, we just hang out and play.” The mentor program is aimed at providing support for students — not just academically, but also socially. Rebecca Moss, guidance counselor at Washington, said the weekly, one-hour sessions provide “a time to talk, for some one-on-one relationship building. ... We encourage them to play games together, to get involved in activities to build relationships.” Sharp was recruited into the program by his wife, Keyla, who is Washington’s administrative assistant. Mentors typically spend time with their assigned student during recess and lunch time, so the student doesn’t have to miss out on any regular class work. Over lunch, Sharp asked

Tristan about his school assignments. “How are you doing this week? Do you have all smiley faces?” Sharp asked; the smiley faces indicate homework done properly. After pausing a moment, Tristan said, “I think I do.” Mentors will go over assignments with students and help them understand what was incorrect or provide direction for makeup work. “The kids get extra guidance — it’s a good opportunity for them,” Sharp said. “My kids don’t want for much, so this is a chance to give something back to the school.” Moss said Washington has about 30 mentors this year “so far — we are always recruiting.” The program started nine years ago as a partnership with First Christian Church. “They are always so supportive,” Moss said. “They do a dinner in the spring for all of the mentors and teachers. It’s a chance to reflect on everything that happened that year.” Prospective mentors go through a background check and a training session. And once they are in, “They become a part of our Washington family,” Moss said. “They love it as much as the kids do — they may even enjoy it more.” Sharp believes the program “does a lot of good,” and since he has two daughters, mentoring gives him “a chance to spend time with a boy.” And the bonds don’t dissolve at the end of the school year. Tristan wants to be a baseball player, so he and Sharp attended Bombers games together over the summer. “They all have hearts of gold,” Sharp said of the students in the mentoring program. “They do the best they can.”

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson

• Use silicone caulk to make non-skid beads on the bottom of your pet's dishes. They will stay in one place instead of getting scooted all around the kitchen.

• Need a quick ironing job but don't have time to iron? Spray a clean kitchen towel with a mixture of water and a little fabric softener until damp. Pop it in the dryer with the item that's wrinkled. It shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get all the wrinkles out, and it will smell great to boot! • While we're on ironing tips, here's a great one from T.C. in Alabama: "If you have mineral deposits on your iron, use a toothbrush and toothpaste (mild abrasive) to polish them off your iron's face. Rinse with water, and next time, use distilled water for steaming."

• "When driving a nail into a plaster wall, first put down a piece of tape at the spot where you'll insert the nail. Tap the nail in right through the tape, then pull away the tape to discard. It often will keep the surrounding plaster from crumbling at the site of the nail." -- W.L. in Oregon • When your cabinet door magnet locks are too strong, try putting a piece of tape over the magnet. It decreases the strength of the magnet. • If you paint your radiators, make sure that the paint you use is heat-resistant. To get the best finish, paint while the radiator is warm. CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I was an ardent fan of "In Plain Sight," and I especially liked one of the series' co-stars, Rachel Boston, who played Det. Chafee. Can you tell me what else I can see her in now that the show is no longer on the air? -Betty W., via e-mail A: Rachel, 30, most recently starred in the Lifetime original movie "Holiday High School Reunion," which aired in November (check your local listings for possible re-airings). As I type this, Rachel is shooting something else for Lifetime -- this time it's a pilot for a new show, which will air this summer if the network decides to pick it up for a full-season run. It's called "Witches of East End," and Rachel told me about the show when I spoke with her recently. "I am working with such an amazing group of women! Julia Ormond plays my mom and Jenna Dewan-Tatum plays my sister. When we were born, our mom cast a spell so we wouldn't know we are witches. Through a chain of events, we discover who we are and how we can help protect each other and our town." *** Q: Is there a new "Wizard of Oz" coming to theaters? I thought I saw a preview for it online -- the special effects looked excellent. -- Bret A., Pittsburgh A: On March 8, 2013, "Oz: The Great and Powerful" will be coming to a theater near you. Here's the official story line: "Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz. At first he thinks he's hit the jackpot -fame and fortune are his for the taking. That all changes when he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who aren't convinced he's the great wizard everyone's been expecting." *** Q: Do you have any news on

Rachel Boston

"Downton Abbey"? I can't wait for the new season! -- Donna B., Oklahoma City, Okla. A: While season three has already aired in the U.K., we'll have to wait until January to see it here in the States. Also, I recently learned that the show's creator, Julian Fellowes, plans to create a "Downton Abbey" prequel, which will focus on the courtship of Lord Grantham and Cora. *** Q: In the 1960s there was a TV show whose characters and story line were similar to the upcoming flick "Django Unchained." The main character went by the name of Jemal David. What was the show's name? -Sid D., via e-mail A: You are thinking of "The Outcasts," which aired on ABC for one season from 1968-69. "The Outcasts" and "Django Unchained" both were inspired by Sergio Corbucci's 1966 spaghetti Western, "Django." "The Outcasts" co-starred Don Murray and Otis Young, and is most notable for being the first television Western with an black co-star, as well as featuring the first biracial Western action team. Three Ways To Help Save A Life

(NAPS)—Ordinary people can do the extraordinary: Help save a life. Your marrow donation, your financial contribution, your time and energy— any and all of these gifts can result in a cure for someone like Valaria Fenderson. Just 12 years old, Valaria’s been admitted to the hospital more than most people. The reason: sickle cell anemia. This inherited blood disorder has plagued Valaria since birth, causing frequent bouts of debilitating pain in her legs, back and chest. Valaria longs for the day when this pain is gone—a day when she can feel normal—and a marrow transplant is the only way this dream can come true. However, no one in her family is a matching donor. Her doctors have turned to the Be The Match Registry—the world’s largest listing of potential marrow donors— to search for one selfless stranger who could save her life. A marrow transplant can cure someone with sickle cell anemia or life-threatening blood cancers, but Half of all patients don’t receive the like Valaria, most patients do not have matching donors within their transplant they need—but you can families; that’s why Be The help change that. Match’s mission is so vital. The nonprofit organization connects patients with donors and facilitates lifesaving transplants. Adding more potential donors to the registry is crucial. If you’re between the ages of 18 and 44, you’re especially needed. Research shows that such donors provide the greatest chance for transplant success. You can join the registry at a registry drive or sign up online at BeTheMatch.org. Potential donors must meet age and health guidelines and be willing to donate to any patient in need. Each registrant completes a health history form and provides a swab of cheek cells. Registering isn’t the only way you can help. Financial donations help patients afford medical procedures, fund clinical research to improve transplant outcomes and bring a patient a step closer to a cure. Volunteering is a third way to help. You could organize a registry drive and recruit donors at your school, church or civic center or consider volunteering at a Be The One Run fundraising run-walk event. The bottom line: Every registry member, every contributor and every volunteer increases the odds that a critically ill person will have a second chance at life. Valaria is still looking for that second chance. “She’s in less pain now but she still needs a transplant, her mother said. “I’m confident that Valaria’s match is out there—just an ordinary person who realizes that he or she can become the cure for someone battling sickle cell anemia and blood cancers. Are you that person? To find out how you can help, visit www.BeTheMatch.org or call (800) MARROW2.

Let youths have say in which gun they choose

Christmas isn’t the traditional day a youngster receives his or her first firearm that it once was, but there still will be plenty of suspiciously long boxes under Christmas trees this year. That’s a good thing. Not only does the future of hunting and shooting depend on the recruitment of young people, but there are few better ways to forge enduring intergenerational bonds than a shared interest in the proper use, care and storage of firearms. Deciding at what age a particular child is ready to own a gun is a decision best left in the hands of that child’s parents, but, in my belief, any child should have restricted physical possession of a powder-burning firearm until he or she is at least 16 years old. With those provisos, I’ll relate my own and my children’s experiences, but only as a guide. In Missouri, a weapon that discharges a projectile by means of air or other inert gas is considered to be a firearm. Under that definition, my first firearm was a Daisy Red Rider BB gun I got when I was 7. I loved that gun so much there was no way I was going to risk losing it by misusing it. It wasn’t long before the adults in my family rewarded my diligence by allowing me to carry it anywhere around the family farm at any time without case-by-case permission. I’ve done a lot of shooting in the almost 60 years since that most glorious of Christmases, but I’m sure I fired more BBs down that Daisy’s barrel than I have shells and cartridges down the barrels of every firearm I’ve had my hands on since. I learned most of what I know about both shooting and hunting while using it to dispatch sparrows, starlings and mice for the five-cent bounty my grandfather had levied against barnyard pests. I bought my first real firearm, a Remington Model 870 12-gauge shotgun, with my own hard-earned money when I was 16. I gave my children, Aaron and Susan, more of a leg up in the world of firearms ownership. I bought Aaron a BB gun when he was 7, and since Susan is six years younger, she inherited it. My kids didn’t get to do anything with potentially lethal firearms except for closely supervised target shooting until they were 10. Aaron started his hunting career with a .22 rifle, a 20-gauge shotgun and a .243 rifle he could call his own, despite that no firearm came off the rack without my express permission. I got off a little easier with Susan, because

GERALD SCOTT ... is an outdoors writer and columnist for The Plainsman

she wasn’t interested in hunting deer. Even so, I bought a .22 rifle for her, and she inherited her grandfather Scott’s .410 shotgun. My experiences with children and firearms have taught me a few things I’d like to pass along. Perhaps the most important lesson is that a child should have as much say as possible in choosing his or her firearms, if for no other reason than it increases pride of ownership. My parents did well by me in that regard, but then it would have been hard to ignore the hints I’d been dropping for months. I’ve done all right by myself over the years. I still have that Remington 870 and a .30/06 Springfield A3/03 I converted back when I was in college. I’ve also sold several guns I sure wish I had back. I didn’t do a good job of following the advice on firearms selection I’ve just given when it came to my own children. I’ve lucked out with Susan, who has recently reclaimed her guns. She was happy to see her grandfather’s shotgun again, but she barely remembered the used .22 rifle I’d bought for her. She even tried to trade it to me for her grandfather’s .22, which I’m far from ready to part with. Aaron left the guns I chose for him at home when he joined the Navy. He’s never asked what became of them. I did a much better job of assessing when Aaron and Susan were ready for firearms and of allowing them to choose how they wanted to use them. Aaron for example, was passionate about firearms deer hunting and was willing to go along on an occasional small-game hunt. Susan was a squirrel hunter and was always up for any kind of target shooting contest. I did my best to avoid putting any pressure on either of them to expand their hunting horizons beyond what they wanted them to be. Grandchildren might be an entirely different matter. I’m expecting a new one next year. He or she will definitely need a target grade .22 rifle, several shotguns and at least two big-game rifles. Maybe I should start shopping for them now. gjsa@sbcglobal.net

• On Dec. 22, 1808, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony has its world premiere in Vienna. The concert venue was freezing cold and the orchestra played poorly enough to force the nearly deaf composer -- also acting as conductor and pianist -- to stop the ensemble partway into one passage and start again from the very beginning. • On Dec. 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville and Wilbur Wright make the first successful flight of a selfpropelled aircraft. Orville piloted the gasoline-powered, propeller-driven biplane, which stayed aloft for 12 seconds and covered 120 feet on its inaugural flight. • On Dec. 19, 1917, four teams of the National Hockey League play the league's first two games. At the time of its inception, the NHL was made up of the Canadiens and the Wanderers (both of Montreal), the Ottawa Senators, the Quebec Bulldogs and the Toronto Arenas.

• On Dec. 23, 1968, the crew and captain of the U.S. intelligence gathering ship Pueblo are released after 11 months imprisonment by the government of North Korea. The ship, and its 83-man crew, was seized by warships on Jan. 23 and charged with intruding into North Korean waters.

• On Dec. 21, 1970, rock star Elvis Presley pays a surprise visit to President Richard Nixon at the White House to discuss the war on drugs. Presley apparently was not searched before being granted admission: Upon meeting Nixon, he presented the president with a gift -a World War II-era Colt .45 pistol. • On Dec. 20, 1989, "Roger & Me," a documentary by Michael Moore about his quest to interview Roger Smith, then chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors, opens in theaters. The film examines the devastating impact on the people of Moore's hometown of Flint, Mich., following the closing of several General Motors auto plants in the area.
