He plans to be a high school or college math teacher, though he doesn’t plan on quitting volunteering anytime soon. “It’s going to be really busy in the fall with college,” he said. “But I don’t think I’ll ever stop volunteering. A good friend of mine is taking over as the student leader here so I know I’ll be back to see everyone and roll some silverware.” Johnson said he would miss the people at the café most, Taylor especially. “You meet a lot of people here and get to know their stories,” he said. “Before I started volunteering, I didn’t know what an impact a simple thing like a hot meal could have. But everyone is so appreciative and it really effects you.” Taylor said she’d miss Johnson’s work ethic, noting he often came in if no one else was available. “If he wasn’t working (at Colton’s) he was here,” she said. “He’s always willing to lend a hand or help if needed.” “I don’t think volunteering is something I really set out to do,” Johnson said. “I just sort of fell into it and really loved it.”

Chase Johnson was spending his last official day at the Community Café rolling plastic silverware. As the diners came in around 4:30 p.m., Johnson smiled at them as he said hello. Some he recognized as regulars, others he hadn’t seen before. “I think the most important thing about working here is remembering that everyone deserves respect,” Johnson said. “They may be having a hard time right now, but we can give them a good meal and sometimes that’s all you need to feel better.” Johnson, who graduated from Smith-Cotton High School Saturday, has been volunteering at the Community Café since his sophomore year. When he’s not at the café, he’s working as a host at Colton’s Steakhouse, participating in National Honor Society, DECA, math or science clubs, or playing basketball with his younger brother. But volunteering is where his heart is. “Some nights we’ll have more than 100 people show up for dinner, other nights is only 60,” he said. “It can be a little crazy, especially if I’m the only one here, but it’s really rewarding.” Salome Taylor, or “Ms. Taylor” as she’s known around the café, said Johnson “has a good heart in him. In the two years I’ve known him he always treats the people here like they’re human

Don’t fall victim to ‘one-method Pete’ syndrome Neglecting to vary the way you present a lure can make all the difference no matter what species of fish you hope to catch
My favorite pond has been yielding bluegill plenty big enough to filet for the 20-odd years I’ve been fishing it. The last time I visited it, I tied on a weighted black wooly worm just as I have every other time I’ve been there. But this time something was different. No matter whether I cast close to shore or toward the middle of the pond — I can toss a fly a long way if I want to — only rarely did a keeper bluegill suck in my offering. I stuck to my guns for 45 minutes and might not have stopped then had I not come to a section of the pond where trees on the bank made conventional fly fishing difficult. A light spinning outfit rigged with a 1-16thounce inline spinnerbait was close at hand, so I picked it up and made what was by this time a half-hearted cast. A jumbo bluegill inhaled the little spinnerbait. My second cast produced the same result. Then the bass took over. This pond’s bass are an exceptionally vicious lot, and it’s impossible to keep them off anything that shines or gurgles. This wouldn’t be a day-ruiner for most people, but when I’m fishing for bluegill, I want to catch bluegill. Thirty minutes, 10 bass and only four more bluegill later, I stopped to think things through. The most significant difference between the spinnerbait and the weighted fly was that the former stayed at roughly the same depth during the retrieve and the latter didn’t. I switched to an unweighted wooly worm, and the battle with the pond’s super bluegill began in earnest. I went home a happy angler indeed. I didn’t coin the term “one method Pete,� but, like many of you, I do have specific fishing tactics I sometimes overuse. Weighted black wooly worms are only the tip of the iceberg. Crappie fishing in the spring means suspending a black/chartreuse tube jig beneath a float, and crappie fishing in the summer means tight-lining minnows directly beneath the boat. Round one with black bass is going to be fought with either a white spinnerbait or a black 6-inch plastic worm. My catfish angling efforts replace what with where and when, namely in a river or stream water level’s rising. Using a scoped .22 rifle for squirrels and a .410 shotgun for rabbits are the only two onemethod Petes I have when hunting season rolls around. They are absolute even when I know some other method might put more game in the bag. In one method Pete’s defense, every outdoorsman’s first-out strategy achieved that sta-

tus, because he or she can make it work far more often than not. It really does make sense to start the day with something you have timeproven confidence in. The problem with one method Pete is he’s all too often hard to put aside. That was my problem on my bluegill fishing trip. Standing on that pond bank, I was — or should have been — well aware that big male bluegill are either actively feeding or else guarding their nests from dawn until dusk at this time of the year. On such familiar water, it shouldn’t have taken me more than 10 minutes tops to figure out that there was something wrong with the way I was presenting my fly. To make matters worse — or at least more embarrassing — I had the means to defeat onemethod Pete syndrome within easy reach. I’ve always been afraid that it might be illegal to have only one rod and reel in one’s possession when in, on or near any body of water. On this occasion, the fly rod I most wanted to use and the aforementioned spinning outfit weren’t the options I should have tried long before I did. There was also a custom made outfit consisting of an 8-foot fly rod blank fitted with a spinning reel handle and guides laying in the grass beside my tackle shoulder bag. For bluegill, I use this combo to cast a fly suspended beneath a small float into the wind. (For the record, I know how to use a conventional fly rod to punch a fly into the wind, but it’s hard work, which is something I try hard to avoid while fishing.) Unfortunately, in the grand old tradition of do as I say, not as I do, I’d tied an identical weighted black wooly worm to the terminal end of the hybrid rig. Switching fly rods taught me absolutely nothing about why I wasn’t catching fish. Looking back on that morning and countless others like it, I can’t help but reach a couple of conclusions. One of them is that, while one class of rod and reel is sometimes superior to another on a given day, deciding to stubbornly stick with what you want to use is seldom the primary cause of a fishless outing. The other is that being stubborn about the size, color, style or any other characteristic of the lure you choose or neglecting to vary the way you present that lure can make all the difference no matter what species of fish you hope to catch.
