Sydney Brink/Democrat Chris Brewer, chairman of the Sedalia Lions Club Christmas shoe program, helps elementary school students select free new shoes Dec. 7 at the J.C. Penney store in Sedalia.

The Sedalia Lions Club has seen how little things can make a difference in the life of a child. For more than 50 years, the club has bought shoes for children in need during the holidays. This year the club bought shoes for 89 children who attend elementary school in Sedalia — 36 from Washington, 12 from Parkview, 15 from Skyline, 11 from Horace Mann and 15 from Heber Hunt. Chris Brewer, chairman of the program for the past five years, said the club budgeted about $3,500 for the shoes. J.C. Penney gives the Lions its best sale price, along with a 20 percent discount. “That allows us to have a per piece account of right around $30 to $32 per shoe,” Brewer said. “We don’t limit anything except for Wheelies and that kind of stuff. The kids get to pick whatever they want. We don’t guide them into anything.” He starts working on this project in November, but he stays in touch with the schools year-round. The club hosts a variety of activities to raise money for the shoe program including the MO Blues, Cruise and BBQ event and a scrapbooking night. The rest of the money is raised through donations from members and the public. “The club’s been real generous towards this. We started off with about $1,000 a few years ago. All of the members have really bought into the program,” he said. Brewer works with school district staff to ensure every need is met. “I went and called (the schools) back and said I want to be able to report back to the club that we outfitted every kid that had a need. They went back to the drawing board and a few of them brought a couple more kids who were on the borderline,” he said. “They’ve all told me that we’ve outfitted every gradeschool kid that had a shoe need this year.” The Lions don’t pick which children get shoes. That decision is made by the principals, guidance counselors, social workers and nurses at the schools. “This experience is not just about getting a pair of shoes. It is about going to a ‘fancy’ store and being able to look at and touch each choice before making your selection just for the mere

reason that you like it,” said Susan Daly, counselor at Parkview Elementary School. “It doesn’t have to fit a budget or be practical and no one has ever worn them before you. It is a feeling that some kids have never experienced before.” Brewer works with the schools to make sure all of the paperwork is done and coordinates the pick-up days and times. He said the Lions jump at the chance to be one of the drivers. “The drivers — those are the guys who really have the fun,” he said. “They get to talk to the kids back and forth between the school to J.C. Penney’s and get to learn a lot about the kids. They really enjoy it.” As the children come into the store, their eyes light up. “They are so excited. This is like the happiest day,” said Jessica Healey, a social worker at Skyline Elementary. “They’ve been asking, ‘When are we going?’ This means a lot to them, it really does.” Each child is given a new pair of socks when they come in. One little girl was excited because she came in wearing her brother’s socks. “We’ve seen kids with socks stuffed into the end of their shoes to make up the difference,” said Brewer. A teacher told Daly that she was amazed at how much larger a student’s shoes looked when he returned to school. She thought that he had chosen a pair much too big for him, so she had him stand tall and pressed on the toe of the shoe to discover his toes right where they should be. His other shoes had been that much too small for him. This year a lot of the children were drawn to the Skechers and other brands of light-up shoes. A first-grade girl from Skyline was walking around the store with a huge smile on her face saying, “They are really nice. I’ve seen them on TV.” After the bill was totaled, the Lions had money left over that they used to purchase hats, coats and gloves that will be donated to the schools. Theresa Eads, a counselor at Skyline Elementary, said one of her students summed up the experience best in a letter. “Dr. Nice Man, “Thank you for helping me go shopping for shoes. They’re the best pair I’ve ever had.”

CELEBRITY EXTRA

Q: I really miss Christopher Meloni on "Law & Order: SVU." Please tell me I can see him on another series or in a movie soon. -- Randi E., via e-mail A: You'll be able to see Christopher as soon as this summer on the small screen when he makes his debut on the sixth season of HBO's "True Blood." Details are hush-hush, as it always is with "True Blood," but according to executive producer Alan Ball, Chris will play "an ancient, powerful vampire who holds the fate of Bill and Eric in his hands." For the big screen, you can see him sometime this year (a release date has not yet been announced) in the comedy "Awful Nice." And in June 2013, he co-stars as Colonel Hardy in the new "Superman" film, "Man of Steel," which also stars Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, and slew of other topnotch stars. *** Q: With Piers Morgan gone, will they be getting another judge for "America's Got Talent," or just stick with Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne? -- Callie H., Portland, Ore. A: In a move that is causing some controversy (when hasn't controversy followed this man?), shock-jock Howard Stern has been tapped to be the third "Talent" judge. Said NBC exec Paul Telegdy: "Howard Stern's larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to 'America's Got Talent' starting this summer. He's a proven innovator, and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable. Howard is very passionate about this show and is fully committed to its future success." *** Q: I have been following the career of Sam Neill ever since "Jurassic Park." I loved him in "The Tudors," "Happy Town," "The Horse Whisperer," "Wimbledon,"

Christopher Meloni "Daybreakers," "Crusoe," etc. What does he have coming up next? -- Will O., via e-mail A: Sam is rumored to be returning as Dr. Alan Grant for "Jurassic Park IV," which doesn't have any production or release-date details as the movie was too recently announced. He costars in the big-screen adaption of Arthur Miller's "A View from the Bridge," to be released later this year. But you can catch him even sooner. Sam comes back to the small screen on Monday, Jan. 16, on Fox when he stars in the new series "Alcatraz." This show looks creepy, scary and super exciting, and I plan to tune in to see exactly what all the hubbub is about. *** Q: It seems like it's that time of year again ... when will the next season of "American Idol" be on? I am kind of disappointed by "The X-Factor," and I could really use my Steven, Jennifer and Randy fix right about now. -- Tina R., Wheeling, W.Va. A: You don't have to wait much longer: America's most popular talent competition will be back Wednesday, Jan. 18, on Fox, with the show airing Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8/7c. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Health Matters

Coping With Cold Weather And Heart Disease

(NAPS)—Give the health dangers of cold weather the cold shoulder— even if you have a heart condition—with these hints from the American Heart Association: • Avoid sudden exertion, such as lifting a heavy shovelful of snow. Even walking through heavy, wet snow or snow drifts can strain the heart. • Watch out for accidental hypothermia—body temperature below 95° F. Symptoms include lack of coordination, mental confusion, slowed reactions, shivering and sleepiness. Those with heart disease are at special risk. High winds, snow and rain can steal body heat. Wind removes the layer of heated air from around the body. At 30° F in a 30-mile wind, the cooling effect is equal to 15° F. Dampness, too, causes the body to lose heat faster. To keep warm, wear layers of clothing to trap the heat. Also, wear a hat or head scarf. Heat can be lost through your head. Ears are especially prone to frostbite. Keep your hands and feet warm, too, as they tend to lose heat rapidly. • Don’t drink alcohol. Alcohol gives an initial feeling of warmth, because blood vessels in the skin Photo courtesy of the American Heart Association expand, but that actually draws It’s heart smart to know your blood presheat away from vital organs. • Take precautions to avoid flu sure. and pneumonia. They pose even greater dangers for people who have a heart condition than for healthy people. Pneumonia is a lung infection that keeps your body from using oxygen as efficiently as it should. Your heart has to work harder to pump oxygenated blood through the body. Your doctor may suggest you get a yearly influenza vaccine and a one-time pneumococcal vaccine. • As much as possible, avoid anyone with a cold or the flu. • Wash your hands thoroughly and frequently, especially after using the bathroom and before eating. • Keep your hands away from your face. • Insist that all caregivers wash their hands thoroughly before approaching you. • Always read the labels on all over-the-counter (OTC) medications, especially if you have blood pressure of 120/80 mm Hg or higher. Look for warnings to those with high blood pressure and to those who take blood pressure medications. Consult your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications or supplements. • Be aware that the use of decongestants may raise blood pressure or interfere with the effectiveness of some prescribed blood pressure medications. • Check the sodium content of any OTCs. Some are high in sodium, which can raise blood pressure. People with high blood pressure should have under 1,500 mg of sodium a day from all sources. Learn more online at www.heart.org/coldweather and www.heart.org/hbp and follow the American Heart Association on Facebook at HBPescapees or Twitter @hearthub. Merck Consumer Care, maker of Coricidin HBP, is a sponsor of the American Heart Association’s High Blood Pressure website.

Fishing jargon often requires a translator According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, the fourth possible definition of jargon is “the specialized vocabulary and idioms of those in the same work, profession, etc.” Perhaps ironically, the second is “a language or dialect unknown to one so that it seems incomprehensible or outlandish.” Fishing is rife with terms that dovetail quite nicely with either or, in many cases, both. Even the simplest term’s meaning can get jumbled. The dictionary states that a fishing pole is “a simple device for fishing, often one that is improvised, consisting of a pole, line and hook” and that a fishing rod is “a slender pole with an attached line, hook and usually a reel, used in fishing.” That sounds pretty straightforward until you consider that the MDC And most other organizations that keep fishing records separate them according to the means by which the fish in question was caught. One of the two classes is called some variation of pole and line, and the other some variation of alternate methods. Does this mean that a fish landed with the aid of a fishing rod, as opposed to a fishing pole, has to be entered under alternate methods? (The answer is no.) Most fishermen and the dictionary agree that “line” is a broad term that covers everything from fluorocarbon to braided steel if it’s used to connect a reel (or pole) and a hook or lure. Note the word “most” in the last sentence. Some bass fishermen — for reasons known only to themselves — refer to their line as “string.” Don’t blame me for what’s about to happen. It was my father who paid good money to give me a chance to go to college, where I was able to learn several big words I thought I’d never use. Well, I’m excited about this paragraph, because in more than a quarter century of professional outdoor writing, this is the first time I’ve been able to use the word etymology (the study of word origins and development) in print. When etymologists gather, they drink toasts to the sport of fishing, because few, if any, human endeavors provide grist for such a treasure trove of doctoral theses on the outer limits of the formation of compound words. In the normal course of events, a compound word is created when two words, head and light, for example, are so commonly paired over a long period of time they morph into a compound word, in this case, headlight. For reasons that would probably still escape me if I had a PhD in English instead of a BA, commonly paired words associated with fishing take a random approach to conjoining. For example, fishhook, fishnet and fishpond are compound words but fish line, fish farm and fish fry are not. There’s no way two-word bass anglers — these are men and women who are used to rocketing across lakes in one-word bassboats — are going to waste breath pausing between words if they can avoid it. Thus, hard plastic

In the same vein, lures whose predominant feature is one or more spinner blades are called spinnerbaits. Then there’s my personal favorite, the livewell, which is a water-filled box with a recirculating pump designed to keep fish alive until you get them home and kill them. All of these terms, plus several more, pass the common usage test and are legitimate compound words. However, they’ve yet to be included in most dictionaries or computer spell checkers, a fact that has led to countless terse conversations between writers and copy editors. Some angling jargon involves made-up words guaranteed to confuse friend and foe alike. Hawg is a textbook case in point. Contrary to what a non-angler might easily assume, hawg is not Ye Olde English spelling of hog. Au contraire. A hawg is an exceptionally large fish, usually a bass. It’s an ingenious word, because no one knows exactly how big “exceptionally large” is. I think it depends on how much time has passed between when the bass was caught and when it’s being described. Some of you may be trying to learn to speak fishing jargon by watching TV. If that’s the case, please pay attention to the fact — and I do mean fact — that if your name isn’t Al Lindner or Babe Winkleman, all fishing jargon must be spoken in a Southern dialect, preferably one native to Tennessee or Mississippi. If you can’t do that, do us all a favor by staying in the back of the boat and keeping quiet. Another thing you absolutely need to know is that no fishing jargon word ends with the letter “g.” Rather, many words (fishin’, goin’, sinkin’ etc.) end with a silent apostrophe. My advice is to practice this at home before you find yourself gettin’ into a bassboat to go fishin’ for hawgs with a for-sure bassin’ man.
