Welcome...

to the February issue of Seaford Scene, your community magazine, business directory and what’s on guide. At the time of writing, it’s difficult to predict where we will be Lockdown-wise, as you read this, but I sincerely hope that the situation has improved and we are all moving forward in a positive way. There’s still plenty to report and update you on, despite many clubs and organisations being unable to meet at the moment – thankfully Zoom, Skype and FaceTime etc. have all come to the rescue. What would we do without them? We’ve certainly been forced to change our means of communication in order to keep in touch with each other, however nothing beats a good handshake and a big hug...talking of which, it’s Valentine’s Day on the 14th, so enjoy your stay-at-home celebrations! In this issue we have an update from Seaford & Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch Association, including important advice on staying safe from scammers, see page 38, plus news from Ouse Valley CARES – Climate Action, Resilient Ecosystems, Sustainability, on page 64. Getting out into nature really lifts your spirits – see Trees for Seaford on page 84, Sussex Wildlife Trust on page 97, and our gardening features from Seaford Community Garden on page 78 and A View from the Potting Shed on page 83 for some get-outdoors inspiration. Music also lifts the mood – both Seaford Music Society (page 18) and The Archway Choirs (page 25) will make you smile! Please keep going everyone, we’re all in it together and we will get through this. Stay safe and well! lesleyhar vey17@hotmail.com

Seaford Rotary

Community Donations to Seaford Rotary Seaford Rotary would like to express their sincere thanks to all those who made donations to Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust in December. To date approximately £400 has been raised through several means of donation.

Each delivery was approximately double the normal weight as it included the main food deliveries to cover the whole of the Christmas period. This was the final delivery of the year and consisted of Christmas boxes of treats, toys, and a bag of fresh vegetables.

Seaford Rotary would like to thank all who generously supported us by making a Christmas donation, whether in the buckets by the tills in Sainsbury’s in Newhaven during December, by making a donation to Seaford Rotary by visiting the Just Giving page at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/ seafordsleigh, or directly to the Club. Seaford Rotary would also like to thank Gemma Polling and her family, from Princess Drive for setting up a GoFundMe page on Seaford Open Notice board on Facebook to raise money for Seaford Rotary Charitable Trust. Their target was exceeded by over 50%. Each year, her home in Princess Drive has had a light display, normally showing Santa waving to children as they passed by the house. This year, however, the family came up with the idea of Santa’s ‘NICE’ list, recognising that Seaford Rotary Club was not able to invite Santa to visit Seaford in December due to the Covid-19 restrictions. The display showed Santa and his elves preparing for Christmas, and on Christmas Eve flying on his sleigh through the night sky to deliver presents. Those parents who wished their child’s name to be included on the ‘NICE’ list were able to message Gemma Polling to include it on the display and were invited to donate through the GoFundMe page. Seaford Rotary is incredibly grateful for all the contributions, no matter the size. All donations will be put to good use for local charitable causes.

Seahaven Storehouse Foodbank Christmas Deliveries

Normally deliveries by Seaford Rotary for Seahaven Storehouse are made on Thursdays, but with Christmas

4

approaching it was necessary to increase the deliveries, and so Rotary drivers made Christmas deliveries in Seaford on Wednesday, and also on Thursday to the remaining families in the Havens.

in Seaford, some of the Christmas boxes were delivered by the Seaford Rotary Sleigh. The Sleigh was outside the Storehouse early in the morning and loaded with as many of the family Christmas boxes as possible. The fresh vegetables were delivered separately by Sophie, one of the Morrisons local Community champions, together with the remaining Christmas boxes. Seven Rotary drivers made the deliveries, some making multiple trips and by 3pm the task was completed. The efforts of the delivery drivers, the Storehouse team and those who donated throughout the troubled year of 2020 from the first lockdown in March have been amazing, heart-warming and demonstrate the best in humankind.

Over the Rainbow Walk Update

No sooner had we announced the launch of our Over the Rainbow Walk for the Mayor of Seaford’s Charities Initiative, than we went into a national lockdown in November. And here we are again with the same situation in January and February! The Over the Rainbow Walk along Seaford Seafront between Splash Point and the Yacht Club and back goes on but with a flexible date. Government restrictions which if continued into March may put our chosen time and date of the afternoon of Sunday March 21st 2021 at risk. Time will tell. Let’s be hopeful. Safety is our guiding principle for all planned events. Whenever it takes place, we look forward to you all being part of this Fun-raising Fundraiser. Together let us make the event a real Red-letter Day for Seaford. Planning continues. We are pleased and encouraged

by the number of groups who have already shown an interest in being involved in the Over the Rainbow Walk. If our chosen date becomes impossible, we will move it to later in the year. We are resolved to do this for our town whenever it becomes safe to do so! We are aiming for an inclusive community event, a family day outing with a rainbow of colourful fancy Dress costumes, perhaps something representative of your local group, club, or society. While we wait, we can all have fun planning the costumes. There will be an Over the Rainbow Facebook page to exchange ideas and Just Giving or GoFundMe pages can be set up to fundraise online. So, this will keep you busy before the event date. Please register your team, pay your entry fee, and start. fundraising straightaway, because this will be a major Rotary-led community event to help us forget the dark times of Lockdown and to revive that feel-good factor. For full walk details from Jean Cash telephone: 01323 890372 or email: jeannecash@gmail.com. Rotary Club of Seaford welcomes new members. Artists announced for Tide Mills Project There is an exciting range of creatives involved with The Tide Mills project, which will culminate with a celebratory week: 20th – 26th September. We will share more news about musicians and soundscape artists who will take part over coming months. Here are the visual artists onboard. Art Lewry and Jack Beccegato of Hunter Gatherer and a local Seaford drone pilot, Gary Bruggenwirth, are mapping the whole site in high-definition 3-D. Art and Jack are creating a VR/AR landscape for visitors to explore both on-site and remotely, overlaying stories, historical buildings and artefacts on the current landscape. Christian Funnell, the artist behind Seaford’s Shoal community seating project, is creating a giant metal water wheel, situated at the sluice for the original mill, powered by the sparse tidal flow that remains. Representations of flora and fauna connected to the past and present of the site by local children will be included in the piece. Christian will also collaborate with a sound artist reconstructing beds at the Chailey Marine Hospital site. They will work with local residents, and the music department at Chailey Heritage, to create soundscapes which will be heard when the listener’s skull makes contact with the metal of the installation. International artist Guyan Porter is creating a light installation representing the mill pond filling and then emptying. He will also run a live radio station from the Seaplane Station, with the local community. Hal Wheeler will be using LED pixel mapping alongside other lighting effects to create the illusion of movement on a scaffolding structure at the site of the Mill. Seaford-based Filmspot is creating ghost-like animations of characters from Tide Mill’s past, and will run open workshops creating flipbooks of the area’s present residents. These will be shown on screens at the redundant Tide Mills station.

6

Animator Abbie Stanton is constructing a giant zoetrope, focusing on David Dale’s stables and horses. Abbie will make, through community willow weaving workshops, 20 horses and other animals, to create the animated illusion when the rotating zoetrope turns. Illustrator Rachel Cunningham and Scenic Artist Romy Loughton are recreating the stationmaster’s cottage as a theatre set. Local school children will help recreate the textures of the cottage. During the celebratory week, the piece will be brought to life by performers as historical characters, welcoming visitors to the site. Kittie Kipper, from Seaford, is a fibre artist and weaver using foraged plastic materials, primarily ghost nets, to encourage makers and creatives of all ages to use materials that are already in existence as discarded waste. She will be working with local children to create fibre circles that will be woven together onsite during the celebratory week. Ellie Johnson-Bullock and Sam Ford, artists based in Denton, are inspired by the food that would have been produced within Tide Mills. They will run a pop-up bakery where the public will be invited to make and break bread together, and a giant pineapple-inspired piece, located at the site of the original pineapple pit. The Tide Mills Project, devised and delivered by LYT Productions, is funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England and the South Downs National Park. Visit the Tide Mills Project website by scanning the QR code, or at www.tidemillsproject.uk to find out more, join the mailing list and get involved.

Seaford Photographic Society Our final two competitions of 2020 were held in early December, online using Zoom as usual. The set subjects were ‘Transport’ and ‘Abstract’ and the judging duties were carried out by photographic artist Russell (Rusty) Lindsay FBPE MPAGB EFIAP. The Transport competition had 26 entries and featured a wide range of different subjects. Somewhat controversially, the judge had quite strong views on whether each image strictly conformed to the definition of Transport and some were marked down accordingly. There were no such doubts about the winning image by Julian Purkis (photo left), however, which he said was a perfect example. Julian’s ‘Birds Eve View’ of a New York street scene was taken from high up in a building, through a closed window. In second place was John Owen’s image (photo right) of a convoy of motorcyclists taken in France, and Colin Mitchell’s spectacular action shot of a rally car ‘Drive it Like You Stole it’ took a well-deserved third place (photo left). There were fewer entries for the ‘Abstract’ competition, a subject that must be quite difficult to judge as it is open to such wide interpretation. Both the firstand second- place images in this case were black and white, which often suits subjects that consist of strong patterns. Anna-Marie Armstrong’s ‘Lines and Shapes’ (photo right)

8

took first place with Adrian Bishop’s ‘Ceiling at the O2’ coming second (photo right). Kevin Smoker’s third place photo (below) was something very different, and took a lot of time and effort to create! He used multiple flash units, some of which had coloured gels to colour the light and some were reflected off a coloured background for which he used printed acetate sheets. The water drops were controlled by a programmable valve and trigger, unit connected to a flash trigger which also fires the camera shutter. Then it’s just a case of taking lots of photos and seeing what you get. The beauty of a simple water droplet! The last meeting before Christmas was a fascinating talk by Alison Jenkins ARPS MPAGB BPE1* on Wildlife Photography around the UK, which we particularly enjoyed as we have a few members who specialise in this. Alison spoke about several of her favourite places in the UK, as well as showing us many of her superb photos. These included jumping salmon at Shrewsbury Weir, deer at Bushy and Richmond parks, seals at Horsey Gap near Norwich, and the amazing bee wolf wasps at RSPB Minsmere, a few miles down the coast in Suffolk. She also gave us a lot of useful technical details and camera settings for photographing different types of wildlife. Club member Charlie Verrall has been taking photos for over seventy years! You can read his story in an article on the website www.seafordps. org, where you can also see large versions of all the competition-winning photos. If you’d like to know more about the club just get in touch using the ‘contact’ button on the website. It’s not too late to join us as we still have four months of the season left, packed with interesting lectures, workshops and competitions.

Is Equity Release safe? Yes, equity release is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), providing protection and security. Premier advisers have specialist Equity Release qualifications. The FCA says that all promotions must be clear, fair, balanced and not misleading. This should make choosing between plans relativity easy, as information has to be given in such a away that you can compare details. These rules give further protection, security and, if need be, access to compensation schemes. As an extra safeguard, Premier is a member of the Equity Release Council (ERC) and recommend ERC approved plans.

Martello Rotary Seaford

Firstly, Happy New Year to everyone. As it has been a fairly quiet month for most of us, we thought a letter from our President might be an idea. So, we tied him to his desk until he came up with his thoughts on the past year and his plans for the future. Hope you enjoy it.

Andy Payne – President Martello Rotary Seaford Life has a funny way of effecting change in us all. In June I took over Presidency of Martello Rotary from Rodney Read, who then immediately became Mayor of Seaford. He had endured four months of working around this new virus and of having to get to grips with Zoom. I did not consider the long-term future of Covid-19 to go beyond the normal ’flu periods and thus a good summer was to be had. How wrong was I? Christmas has come and gone, and the vaccine is slowly being rolled out. A mutant variant is rampant YET, we can report on successes. All is not lost. Covid-19 has forced the Super-tanker of Martello Rotary to commence it’s turn. New formats for membership are now agreed and you do not have to become a full Rotarian to join our band of Environmental, Fundraising and Social friends. Associate membership will be offered to those helping in voluntary roles in other organisations. Our New Year’s Honours list includes Carol Henderson of SVET, Bryan Turner of St James’ Trust and SVET and Keith Blackman of the Community Partnership, all of whom are made Honorary Members of Martello Rotary. Some of our traditional events are not suitable to operate at present, however, innovation and change have allowed us to successfully organise On-Line Virtual Runs using the systems from Race Nation. This has allowed hundreds of joggers and runners to participate in virtual races, raising money for WOLO, The Youth Counselling Scheme and Newhaven Lifeboat. Our

12

Community Calendar sales were understandably slower, but supreme efforts by Members and Seaford’s shopkeepers mean we have sold out! Our planters, newly installed last year at Seaford Railway Station, have now received their school children’s decorated panels and Christmas trees, plus new plantings to give us a colourful spring. Martello Rotary information is now visible to rail users and passers-by. If passing by you will have seen our banners advertising our service to collect your used real Christmas Trees and recycle them. A big thank you to the Cuckmere Inn, White Lion and Seaford Railway station for assisting us in marketing and J. C. Powney Builders for offering assistance with a truck for collections. Martello Members actively join in with the Seaford Community Partnership, developing environmental projects within Seaford, and we have specifically accepted responsibility for developing the ‘Friends of ’ groups for the identified local green spaces within the town. Our membership continues to grow. All are welcome, meetings are by Zoom, but we do hope to return to normalised meetings when allowed. Currently we are exploring partnerships with WOLO and Plastic Free Seaford, and maintaining our relationships with our existing corporate and charitable friends. You can find us online and on Facebook. Just type in Martello Rotary. Come and see us on the 25th April, Covid-19 willing, when will see Martello Rotary, Seaford Rotary, Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions, Seaford Bonfire Society and Newhaven Coastwatch jointly hosting, under the Mayor of Seaford’s mantle, a day of Support for our Seaford Charities at the Martello Fields. Smaller charities will receive free space to promote and fundraise for their causes in an environment of support and care. Wishing you all a safe, healthy and prosperous New Year. Andy Payne. COVID-19 Vaccination Programme

Our group works with the GP practice to help ensure patients’ views are understood and, where at all possible, reflected in the way services are delivered. We thought it might be helpful for our patients to try to summarise the situation regarding delivery of the Government’s COVID vaccination programme. This is obviously a very rapidly changing situation and we have included some useful web sites that are being kept current. This, however, is the situation at the time of writing (15th January 2021)

Both Seaford and a number of Eastbourne practices are members of a local GP federation (South Downs Health and Care (SDHC). The federation provides our extended hours services and is also delivering the COVID-19 vaccination programme for our practices. (http://www.sdhc.org.uk). The federation is calling patients in the order specified by the government and is currently delivering the service from Hampden Park Surgery in Eastbourne (Brodrick Close, Eastbourne BN22 9NR). Obviously the location is not ideal for Seaford residents, but the site was chosen partly because of availability of accommodation and staff, but also because of the nature and availability of the early batches of the vaccines. Hopefully as the Oxford version becomes readily available, a more local provision may become possible. The programme is progressing well with many GPs and staff working extremely long hours including evenings and weekends to make it happen. This has included volunteers from Old School Surgery. Many over 80s have already been vaccinated, and last weekend the federation vaccinated all care home staff in Seaford and Eastbourne. Over the next two weeks they will be vaccinating all care home patients. This is not an easy task as many already have the COVID virus. The target is to vaccinate all over 70s and extremely vulnerable patients by mid-February. This will be highly dependent on staff, premises and vaccine availability. Please be patient and wait to be called for your appointment. Old School Surgery does not have any information on when individuals will be called and would ask the patients not to ring to enquire as this is having an adverse impact on their ability to deliver the already over-stretched normal services. The following is an informative site that is being kept current: https://www.sussexhealthandcare. uk/keepsussexsafe/sussex-covid-19-vaccinationprogramme/

SEAFORD MUSIC SOCIETY Seaford Music Society was looking forward to presenting another of its concerts at Seaford Baptist Church in January to a live audience, but unfortunately due to the pandemic this had to be cancelled at fairly short notice. We apologise to those who had already bought tickets and others who would have attended to listen for an hour of lovely music played by our wonderful musicians. The society will be planning more concerts in due course, but with the situation as it is at present, dates for live concerts however can only be arranged as and when it is safe to do so. The committee is considering other methods of delivering concerts and musicians are ready and keen to play music to an audience if it can be made possible to do so. We should all have music in our lives. It brings people together, either if playing as a group or as an audience

listening – what would life be like without music? Most of us will listen to music every day either on radio, television or from discs and records. Studies have shown that music is good for the soul – it can improve mood, health and wellbeing, reduce anxiety and helps with pain relief. The joy you can get from music will help lift your spirits, and for dementia sufferers it is suggested that communication with others improves after listening to music. For those who play musical instruments, either solo or with an orchestra, there is the feeling of fulfillment and pleasure that they are bringing joy and satisfaction both to themselves and to others. The Society’s website will give information about further concerts and information: seafordmusicsociety. com in due course. We hope to welcome you back to live concerts very soon with more great music from our talented musicians. The website is updated at regular intervals with information about when concerts will be organised and details of how tickets can be obtained.

Choc ’ N’ Chilli!

Perfect partners for Valentine’s Day

S. R. DAVIS & SONS ESTABLISHED 1978

BUILDERS & DECORATORS UPVC FACIAS & GUTTERS for all maintenance repairs & alterations interior and exterior decorating extensions & conversions The Aztecs valued chocolate so much their taxation was levied in cocoa beans! The hot frothy drink they made was reserved for warriors, nobility and priests, and was said to confer wisdom and vitality. Emperor Montezuma, not one for moderation, drank 50 goblets a day. Scientists have suggested that the antioxidants and flavonoids in chocolate with at least 70% cocoa improve verbal and visual memory, reaction times, balance certain hormones, help to relieve blood pressure and boost serotonin levels, our brain’s natural anti-depressant. All good reasons to indulge a little, especially this month. And what could be nicer on a cold Valentine’s Day than snuggling up with your romantic other and a cup of hot chocolate? Use high-quality cocoa powder, preferably organic and fair trade, and make a hot drink, sweetened with honey. Then cook the object of your affections an authentic Mexican chilli dish by adding cocoa to the sauce. The nutrient capsaicin, found in chillies, is a powerful antioxidant, which helps to prevent many conditions such as high cholesterol, heart and lung diseases, and cataracts. It also stimulates blood circulation which boosts the immune system, and it even relieves pain. Chocolate and chillies both encourage the secretion of endorphins, natural chemicals which relax muscle tissue, and act as mood enhancers. The perfect recipe for love!

A fine figurehead in February! February is not the kindest month on Seaford seafront, but a wreck on 14th February, 1882, had anunexpectedly happy ending with a Valentine’s Day romance. The Gannet, a steamer from Calcutta bound for London, with a £120,000 cargo of wheat, linseed, cotton, indigo, hides, horns, tea and coffee, ran aground near the Martello Tower on ‘a very dirty’ foggy morning. The crew were saved and taken to the Bay Hotel in Pelham Road to recover. A young woman working there helped one of the ship’s officers to dry out the ship’s papers and soon afterwards they were married. Most of the Gannet’s cargo was salvaged and brought to safety by a bridge which was built from the ship to the sea wall. It had a double track for wagons to go back and forth and the goods were carted to the railway station. It was reported that folk waited on either side of the road for the carts to pass towards the station – a rope thrown from one to another across the load as it passed usually succeeded in dislodging a box or two, which then went missing. There was said to be no demand for tea or coffee from the town’s grocers for a long time. The Gannet was stuck fast on the beach and three weeks later in a strong gale, she broke amidships. Parts of the iron keel could be seen in the shingle at low tide for years afterwards, and in 1913 her propeller shaft was recovered. Perhaps the most familiar name among all the vessels to have ended their days in Seaford Bay is the Peruvian. This is because what is believed to be its figurehead is prominently displayed in restored splendour in Seaford Museum, in the Martello Tower. The Peruvian was a Danish iron barque (591 tons), bound for Hamburg from South America with a cargo which included vegetable ivory (the nut palm), to be used in button making. On 8th February 1899, she was driven ashore in heavy seas by a southerly gale, immediately opposite the Esplanade Hotel, which was on the corner of the Causeway and the seafront. Ten of the crew and the

captain’s dog were rescued by lifeboat or rocket apparatus. Three days later another gale blew up, and watched by a large crowd the Peruvian broke up. Sparks flew each time the iron side of the vessel was flung against the sea wall. Many of the ivory nuts – rather like large Brazil nuts – found their way into Seaford homes as souvenirs; some were polished smooth on one side and a little sketch or carving of the ship made on it. The figurehead, an ever-lasting reminder of the disaster, stood at one time on the seafront and then on the Salts Recreation Ground. When it became dilapidated, the pupils of Chyngton Primary School offered to refurbish it and in appreciation the local council let it stand in the school grounds. It then found its way to Seaford Museum and was restored by a ship figurehead expert, David Taylor, a museum member. Today, the figurehead stands proudly in the Museum. We hope to be able to open the Museum again soon, subject to Covid-19 restrictions. Please see our Facebook page and our website (www.seafordmusem. co.uk) for details. Stay well. Photo: The proud figurehead of the Peruvian.

We Should All Sing! We Can All Sing. We Should All Sing! Everyone hears or makes music sometimes involuntarily – we whistle, we hum or we might just get earworms (translated from a lovely Swedish word, meaning a song you just can’t get out of your head!). Research has been taking place focusing on the health benefits of singing. The results are quite amazing. l It

can actually improve your immune system! Research documented a 150% increase in immunoglobulin A during rehearsals and a 240% increase during performance.

l

It helps you to breathe more deeply and gives improved lung function, breathing awareness, and memory training – all skills needed for singing, but beneficial to all aspects of physical and mental health.

l

Improvement of mood and enhancement of psychological well being, leading to a substantial reduction in the stress hormones. One study reported a 30% reduction in cortisol levels during rehearsals and a 37% reduction during performance.

l

Singing in a group or being connected to other singers promotes ‘togetherness’ based on a common experience, especially if the choir is an inclusive, community-based organization. Singers’ self-reported group cohesion is even greater than that reported in sports teams.

These benefits can’t be ignored! It’s quite amazing that simply engaging in something so instinctive can be so helpful to our wellbeing. Since COVID-19 made residence in our lovely Archway Building impossible we sadly had to leave, but we have either been rehearsing online or renting community spaces where conditions and precautions have allowed. As this article was submitted, we are in a national Lockdown. The existing choirs are meeting once a week online to learn new songs, harmonies and just to see each other. Technology doesn’t allow online singing to be simultaneous, but it does give us a sense of community, and of course, the singing is still as good for us as it ever was! If you’re interested in taking part in our free weekly sing-a-long please email jane@ thearchwaygroup.com for more details. You are also more than welcome to join our online choir group for a small fee. Take care, stay safe and let the music lift you up. Jane Reeves

Pancake Day!

It’s pancake day this month! I grew up near Olney, in Buckinghamshire. It’s a pretty little town with lots of lovely independent shops and a strange claim to fame; it is the home of the pancake race. On Shrove Tuesday, in a 500-year-old tradition, many of the Olney women (and the odd bloke in a dress), don aprons and head coverings, and race through the streets to the church tossing a hot pancake in a frying pan! It’s an entertaining afternoon, but how did it all come about? Legend has it that in 1455 a woman cooking pancakes heard the shriving bell summoning her to confession. In her Christian haste she ran to the church, wearing her apron and still clutching her frying pan, complete with hot pancake, and so the tradition was born. The reason this 15th-century woman was cooking pancakes in the first place was due to a Christian dictate; that through the 40 days of Lent no person should eat milk, eggs or butter. This was a pre-fridge era, which meant that if a housewife had stocks of these foods they would go off before the fast ended on Easter Sunday, so she had to use them up. The solution was to make pancakes, and they became a symbol of self-indulgence before the fast. Indeed Mardi Gras, as the ritual is called in France and the USA, literally translates as ‘Fat Tuesday.’ Over the years I’ve tried my pancakes with fruit, maple syrup and a variety of savoury fillings, but I keep coming back to fresh lemon juice and a sprinkling of sugar... irresistible!

Here is my own recipe for perfect pancakes: Ingredients 115g (4oz) plain flour Pinch salt 1 large egg 285ml (half a pint of milk) 115g (4oz) butter, melted Juice from 2 lemons, strained Caster or Demerara sugar to taste.

Method

To make the batter: sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. Beat in the egg and a little of the milk until smooth. Gradually beat in the remaining milk and add 4 tablespoons of the melted butter. Cover the bowl and leave to stand for one hour. In a small non-stick frying pan heat some of the butter until sizzling, but taking care not to let it burn. Pour enough batter into the pan to coat the base evenly. Cook over a moderate heat until the pancake is light golden-brown underneath and looks dry on top. Flip over (try to do this with style!) and cook the other side until golden. Continue until all the batter is used. The recipe should make 10-12 pancakes. You can keep the pancakes warm in the oven (Gas mark 1 / 14°C) until they are all cooked, but in our house they’re barely out of the frying pan before they’re scoffed. Serve with the lemon juice and sugar... Enjoy! Sarah Davey

THREEWAYS NURSING HOME Threeways Nursing Home in Beacon Road, Seaford has battled long and hard to prevent the coronavirus infection from entering the Home, and to date we have been extremely effective in our efforts. This is a real tribute to our excellent staff team who have followed the rules, shown constraint and exercised extreme caution when off duty. Our staff are all wearing the required PPE as per Government guidelines and are adhering to strict infection control requirements. Each member of staff is tested three times a week, and all

residents are tested on a four-weekly basis. We are pleased to say that we have a purpose- built ‘Pod’ sited by one of our front doors. This enables us to facilitate planned visits where the visitor sits in the pod and communicates with the resident, who remains in the warmth of the Home. For any resident who is sadly reaching the final days of their life, we facilitate arranged visits in the resident’s room on a one-to-one basis. The attending visitor is now able to have a new rapid test, which gives a result within 30 minutes.

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup In opening, having skipped over January entirely, I feel it prudent to say why. We were flooded out of our home late last year, and to cut a long story short, December flew by in a flurry of insurers, soaked furniture, multiple holiday lets, house hunting and stress beyond stress. I am happy to report that by the time you read this, we should be safely out of boxes and under brick and mortar again, wiser, poorer, but blessed none the less. Homelessness can happen to anyone in the blink of an eye, all planning and good intentions aside, and is utterly terrifying. With most charity shops closed at the moment, that great big winter clear-out can help others in a far worse position than we can even imagine. We have a vibrant chapter of Surviving the Streets in Seaford, entirely volunteer run and committed to assisting people who have fallen through the cracks (like we did), and families and folk in temporary housing. Visit SurvivingTheStreets. uk to see what this amazing charity does, and how you can support their work. Drop them a line if you have furniture, bedding, clothing or food to donate. They operate throughout East Sussex and Esther Morgan runs the Seaford chapter.

vulnerable pretending to be NHS staff administering vaccines. Please make sure that you, your family, especially your kids and your vulnerable golden family members, vulnerable friends and relatives, and your neighbours are super scam-savvy and do not fall victim to any of these scoundrels. Some of the more prevalent scams are listed below:

False offers of help:

While there are organisations and volunteer groups in our town offering tremendous help, they generally do not phone and offer to collect your pension for you. Please check with the Council or Volunteer Responders before accepting any offers of help from people you do not know, especially if that offer is unsolicited and involves money. This scam attempt can be in person, by phone and by email, so please be super savvy. The SVET support team can be contacted through their website https://svet.proffer.org.uk and the NHS Volunteer Responders can be phoned on 0808 196 3646. If you need friendly listening support, call Seafriends, the phone-based ‘Listening Ear’ scheme, on 01323 914689 or email hello@seafriends.org.uk.

Dodgy texts and links:

Likewise, our own Foodbank Seahaven Storehouse run by Dawn Woodgate and her army of cheerful volunteers, is under more pressure than they ever have been, and once again the appeal goes out for just two extra items of groceries each time you shop, or a steady small donation. They now feed nearly 300 people in the Seahaven area, including 140 children. If you’d like to contribute food items then you can leave them at dropoff points around town which are both Co-Op, Angies Newsagent, Scoop ’n’ Weigh, the porch of St Peter’s in Belgrave Road, and the Toucan (two can) collection box in Morrisons behind the tills. To make a regular financial donation. Bank transfer can be made to Seaford Community Church bank account 60-18-37 57915415, with a reference of ‘Storehouse’. If you would like to gift aid your donation please email admin@kings-well.org.uk.

EE, TV licences, HMRC and so on, will not typically contact you for billing queries by text. Be advised that email scams look so much like the real thing, it is really hard sometimes to tell the difference. As a rule, if you get a renewal advice or a refund advice or anything that asks you to verify your details, subscription, bank details or anything else by phone, email or text, please contact the service provider directly from their official website – don’t use the details in the dodgy mail or text. These scams are so convincing – it is actually better to be rude and sceptical than cooperative and scammed. Learn more about how you can spot these scams by doing a quick online (free) scam awareness course at https:// www.friendsagainstscams.org.uk/what-is-a-scam. The course is fun, the information an eye opener, and you get a certificate at the end of it proving you are scam savvy, well informed and can share your new-found knowledge with others.

Fake HMRC grants:

It is appalling to think that anyone would scam people who are already backs to the wall, but they do. Have a look at this fake grant offer… Spot the giveaway that it is a scam? Look at the wording – ‘update your information to its latest form’ – Queen’s English? Nope. Scam. But a convincing one. of risk following, and so on. It is being administered in some hospitals and, from last week, hundreds of local vaccination centres run by GPs. If you are unfortunate enough to get tricked into providing confidential details or losing money to fraudsters, report it to Action Fraud at www.actionfraud.police.uk. Please carry on being the eyes and ears in our town – due in large part to our very savvy Seafordians, crime remains low but we are no less vulnerable than the next guy. Keeping up with the latest info, and then sharing that with family, friends and neighbours, increases our resilience to scammers and makes us rather an unattractive target. Making sure our Neighbourhood Watch is visible is a great deterrent to would-be post and doorstep scammers too, and is proven to reduce crime. And having said that, it is renewal season. The easiest way to do that is online at www.sandbnhw. org/join but if you fancy joining or renewing the old fashioned way, there is a handy tear off slip over the page. Our thanks again to our neighbours for your loyal support. Carry on being generous with your smiles, your care for yourselves and each other, and above all, be safe.

False vaccination invites:

From www.getsafeonline.org – Very predictably, the launch of the staged mass vaccination of people in the UK against COVID-19, is being accompanied by a rash of attempts at fraud, as reported by Trading Standards departments around the country. Exploiting people’s desire to receive the vaccination as soon as possible and, more recently, increased fear of infection in the light of the new, more virulent strain, scammers are using phone calls (both in person and automated), and text messages to offer the chance to ‘jump the queue’. In the most commonly reported cases, the recipient is required to respond by clicking a link in the text message, or pressing ‘1’ on the call. If you receive an email or phone call from anyone purporting to offer you the vaccine other than the NHS, you should assume it is a scam. In reality, the vaccine is being offered by the NHS to people most at risk from the Coronavirus, with groups at lower levels

Inner Wheel Club of Seaford Monthly meetings continue to take place thanks to the internet. This at least enables a good number of our members to join in via Zoom meetings. The Club has an opportunity to consider what help it can offer the local community despite restriction on funds due to Covid-19 preventing most of our charity events from taking place.

Photo: co-president Ann Reed delivering goods to the charity.

We have given support to the local Young Carers group in recent years. As it was not possible to hold a Christmas party for them this year, it was decided to give them each an Amazon voucher so that they could buy something for themselves. In addition we supported the Seahaven Storehouse by providing canned food etc. International Inner Wheel day is on January 10th. In the past we have made it an opportunity to meet as a Club and thought of all our sister clubs around the world. It is treated as a day of supporting service to others. We may have a tea party and invite older Seaford residents who do not get out much or visit a local nursing home. Some years we have knitted blanket squares or provided items for ‘international aid shelter boxes’ that are sent around the world to give aid at a time of disaster. Looking ahead, (hopefully!), our Co-Presidents Ann and Jan have chosen to support St Johns playground equipment appeal (as featured in an item in Seaford Scene). We plan to raise funds over the coming year, as allowed!

We asked our customers why they purchased a MOCKFORD’S AWNING. Here are a few of their abridged replies:

Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

West Cuckmere after Storm Bella

The popularity of walks from South Hill has never been greater as Lockdown returns and the days get longer.

The idyllic view of the Seven Sisters (or six truncated dry valleys), from near the Old Coastguards and Hope Gap (photo left), graces computer screens across the world. These White Cliffs are maintained by the force of the sea. Looking the other way, after last year’s storms, however, revealed disconcerting loss of the softer rocks on the Seaford side of the Haven. As the bottom of the path to the shore washed away, brown soil (with plastic to help date it!) appeared from under the shingle of the storm beach. Underneath, and brighter coloured, lay the brown and orange sediments of the downland slope dating back thousands of years – to the latter part of the last ice age. Below, and spilling on to the shore, was much shattered, but more solid, white chalk, with a picturesquely irregular top, under the flinty orange layer (photo left). In the low winter temperatures of last month, it was not difficult to imagine freeze/thaw in once-arctic Seaford creating this pattern. Europe was not much warmer either then. In the corner of the beach appeared a prehistoric swallow hole, naturally filled and buried under the slope (photo right). More intriguing were seven black cables,

52

spread like tentacles, and Doulton pipe ware found there. The clue is the fishing/cable hut nearby. Three submarine communication cables were laid across the Channel in the early part of the last century. They were all cut, however, with the threat of invasion 80 years ago (see Seaford Scene issue 161). Only a few years later, we were reconnected, at the request of the Kremlin – with an additional cable still which is still visible at Hope Gap. Meanwhile on the shore, Storm Bella revealed stripes in the broken chalk, pointing down slope (photo left) and the tide had washed out a

loose sarsen stone (photo right). Earlier this century, the discovery of aligned stripes near the sarsen stones of Stonehenge roused some discussion as to their significance. Here in Seaford, the stripes just ‘point’ naturally to the Cuckmere River.

Since Storm Bella, the scattered concrete on the beach has been carefully put back in the corner (photo left) ready for the next gale. We spotted at least a couple of much recycled ‘dragon’s teeth’ (anti-tank pyramid-topped concrete blocks) – there was once a line of them across the beach c.1940 and a couple have ended up in the concrete sea defences at some stage. The path has been diverted a bit inland, so take care as you go, and keep well. Ed and Biddy Jarzembowski and Pete Austen

Seaford Stamp & Post Card Club Hi, I’m Bob Brown and I have been involved with Seaford and District Stamp and Postcard Club for over 25 years now, latterly as Vice-Chairman to Tony Hope, who decided to stand down last March after a number of years in the Chair. May I here pay tribute to Tony for his enthusiasm and generosity for the success of the club, in particularly our relocation to the Constitutional Club a few years ago. His displays have been of an excellent standard and never cease to delight the audience – long may he continue to entertain us.

wonderful post-medieval institution the Thurn and Taxis postal system. I also collect postal history from a number of islands around the world, but not Tristan da Cunha! That I leave to our esteemed Society President Laurie Holland. Latterly I have been looking at the postal history of the Austrian ‘province’ of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the years leading up to 1918 and the end of World War 1. It’s of interest that even in those days, over a century ago, the Austrians introduced a form of postcode in that area. Sadly, with the exception of September last year, the Club has not been able to conduct meetings at the ‘Con Club’ due to COVID-19 but I do hope we will be able to resume sometime in early 2021. Please check our website: http://www.seaford-sussex.co.uk/ sspc/ or contact our club secretary David at david. manthorpe10@gmail.com for further details.

Personalised care and support in a homely environment My own collecting interests in part coincide with Tony’s in that I have collected New Zealand for many years, but have latterly branched out into Switzerland, in particular postal history relating to Swiss railways. I also collect some other European countries which are now regarded as ‘dead’, where stamps for historical reasons have ceased to be issued. These include old German states like Baden, and that

Living with dementia in an uncertain New Year, with a smile I’m writing this with certainty that each and every individual reading now has some personal experience of someone close to them who has come into contact with Covid-19. This may entail a story about a friend who was asymptomatic and simply shrugged it off, or another who was confused by losing their sense of smell and taste whilst suffering from a rotten, headachy cold that they couldn’t shake. Then there are those who have lost loved ones, family and long-standing acquaintances in their community. We have all now been made aware of the serious and debilitating impact of this virus, and we wish you all a safe and healthy New Year as we look towards welcome vaccinations and some faint light at the end of the tunnel that offers us all hope. It is with this in mind that I wanted to share a very human story of life and laughter in the most trying of circumstances over the Christmas period just past.

Living in the moment The Clifden House logo is an outstretched hand supporting a butterfly. The idea in dementia of creating fulfilling moments where you can – butterfly moments – where someone with dementia is shown a route back into the life they may have once enjoyed, is gaining credence with each year that passes. We always seek to catch at least one moment each day for each resident where they can find a link back to the music they once enjoyed, the dances they knew, the books they read, the places they visited, the food they loved the most, and so on. Our manager and team members discussed an article they had come across where residents had

60

captured the wintery Christmas spirit by staging a snowball fight inside their carehome except, in the absence of a truly white Christmas, they had instead substituted ping pong balls for snowballs, and for a target they had found a willing member of the team to run the gauntlet of residents and team mates pelting them as they scuttled past. Therefore, just before Christmas Day, you would have heard roars of laughter from the main sitting room at Clifden House as residents pelted our manager, sporting a frankly spectacular set of sparkly antlers, with white ping pong balls whilst Christmas music played throughout. Then all the (snow) balls were gathered up for round two, and three, and four… In that moment, the continuing strangeness of wearing PPE masks and constant commitment to the care and welfare of those in our care gave way for a brief moment to a shared and very human experience of joy and laughter, and some of those residents are pretty good shots…! Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Community Spirit shines through Business2Schools co-ordinated an appeal on the BBC to find laptops and donations for schools to help children affected by the latest lockdown. Cradle Hill Primary School and their staff have been amazed by the generosity of the community and local businesses, as they have come together to help provide laptops, tablets and printers to support children who may need additional resources whilst they are home learning during the latest lockdown. Local businesses Greve & Son Builders and the Estate Agent Content Club each donated £500. Jonny Greve said: ‘I had a chat, with my friend Jerry Lyons and both wanted to do something positive to

It’s important we help each other during these tough times, and I’d encourage any other local businesses to contact schools and see if they can help them.’ Mrs Andrea Keith of Cradle Hill School said: ‘We really have been overwhelmed with the response to this appeal. It is heart-warming to know that our community is there to support our children during this very difficult time. We are very grateful for the generous donations, which will help make a difference to our children and their families.” For more information about supporting this scheme and donating, please visit the Business2Schools site; www.business2schools.com/donate. Seaford CARES – a lot! We have all read and heard about the problems of climate change. Living in Seaford we feel the effects of high winds and storms, and are conscious of the risks of flooding. Are you frustrated by not seeing a clear way of doing something to help address the problems? An exciting and challenging solution has come our way. Many people are already involved, working with the Seaford Community Partnership, but more help would be welcomed to move these projects forward. This is a community project and there is scope for many to take part. Currently we are looking for people with skills in project management, gardening, IT, secretarial, public relations etc, but the key requirement is for people who like working with others and getting things done and who believe that their contribution can make a difference to the challenges that we all face. If you are interested in helping, please email: seafordpartners@ gmail.com or telephone 01323 893172. Early in 2020, the Partnership was approached by a local group (Greenhavens) to be part of a bid to the National Lottery Climate Action Fund that was being developed by The South Downs National Park Trust and other Partners. The bid is compatible with work done by Trees for Seaford (formerly Tree Wardens who have planted many trees over the past 13 years) and would help implement policies in the newlyadopted Seaford Neighbourhood Plan. Furthermore, the Partnership was also involved, some years ago, in working with the Environment Agency in developing a long-term flood defences strategy and contributing to a joint EU project looking at how to cope with climate change in the long term. The Partnership contributed five Seaford-based projects to the National Lottery bid (known as, Ouse Valley CARES: Climate Action, Resilient Ecosystems, Sustainability). The full bid is expected to exceed £2 million but initially, a £150,000 project development grant has been made by the Lottery so that detailed work can be done, by March 2022, to formulate the full bid. The CARES Project Vision is for ‘An engaged, knowledgeable community, where residents and decision-makers understand the threats posed by the

climate and ecological emergency, and are actively collaborating to reduce their carbon footprint and build personal and ecological resilience’. Specific aims of the CARES bid are to: l Focus on targeted and community-rooted projects and activities. l Develop environmental initiatives to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions. l Mitigate the impact of climate change on the local community by social activity. l Involve and inform the local community in the development of projects. Core themes from the bid across the District are: l Protecting and regenerating habitats and green spaces. Green corridors across and between communities and connections to wider countryside and National Park; wildflower stepping stones; tree planting and re-wilding areas, beach and marine life protection. l Sustainable energy use and transport. Reducing carbon emissions; improving sustainable energy and transport; renewable energy (solar and wind); improving energy efficiency; home insulation/heat pumps etc; cycle ways; walkways via twittens; public transport via buses and trains. l Building community skills and resilience: Community awareness raising/education and community involvement for all ages. The five projects for Seaford to deliver are: l A combined Ouse Valley and Tidemills Nature Reserve. l Setting up ‘Friends’ for each Local Green Space (LGS) designated in the Seaford Neighbourhood Plan. l Cliff Gardens community garden at the Splash Point end of the Seafront. l More trees and wild flowers in Seaford. l Cycling and Walking Network which enhances the links from the town centre to the National Park. Since February 2020, the Partnership has made considerable progress in defining in detail the scope of each of these projects, specifically: l Defining the potential for enlarging the Ouse Estuary Nature Reserve. l Signing up nearly 40 people as ‘Friends’ of ’ five of Seaford’s recently designated Local Green Spaces. l Identifying the scope for a community garden, Cliff

Gardens, within the context of improvements at the eastern end of The Esplanade up to Splash Point. l Developing an ambitious tree planting concept that aims to significantly increase the number of trees within Seaford and its surroundings, as well as continuing Trees for Seaford’s current programme. l Initiating a survey of all footpaths and bridleways, in and beyond Seaford, within the context of the ESCC Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan 2020-2030.The aim is to increase the use of Seaford’s network by pedestrians and cyclists. There are many local initiatives in Seaford seeking to address the challenges of climate change. For example, Seaford Town Council has set up a Climate Change Working Party and Seaford Environmental Alliance (wwwseafuture.org) has been formed recently. The Community Partnership is working closely with both these, and many other, local groups.

A Good Read

When the Curtain Falls

by Carrie Hope Fletcher

Somewhere in every town or city is a special place. A place where real life is suspended, and you can forget about your problems. A place that shows us life in all its details. The ups and downs, love, death, joy, and sadness. It shows us life as we wish it was and life as we hope it will never be. That place is of course, the theatre. This novel catapults you into that world and provides a fascinating glimpse of life backstage where the audience usually never gets to venture. Part romance and part ghost story When the Curtain Falls switches between the present day and 1952, where two young lovers try to steal moments together backstage as life begins to echo the drama being played out on stage. Tragedy strikes and one of them is destined to remain forever haunting the dressing rooms and fly floor high above the stage. Nearly 60 years late, their fateful play is revived at the same theatre. Among the cast are Olive and Oscar, also stealing moments together to keep their budding romance secret. But strange things start to happen as a previous occupant is reawakened. Sometimes (especially right now) you need a light, easy-to-read novel for a bit of escapism. When the Curtain Falls fills that brief. It won’t win any literary awards, and sometimes the character development feels rushed, but it has a certain level of charm. Fletcher herself has grown up in the theatre, and anyone who knows her cannot help but picture her when Olive is described. But that only adds to the fun. Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

Less but Better At the start of last year, we launched our ‘new’ way of working. We moved towards only having 20 available properties to sell at any one time. And unlike a lot of things that happened during 2020, it was incredibly well received. The idea was part inspired by a German design philosophy, ‘Weniger, aber besser’ which means ‘less, but better’ in English. Our goal was, and still is, to focus on fewer clients because that means we deliver a better, more personal service. For many estate agencies, grabbing the biggest chunk of market share is their number-one goal. But we’re far more focused on customer care than market share. Our experiences and the responses from our happy clients last year confirmed to us that it is our best way forward to help people sell and buy homes in Seaford.

The reason why it works

Wouldn’t you rather be one of 20 people rather than one of 80, 90 and in some cases 100 others all competing for an agency’s time? Who wouldn’t want an estate agent to spend more time working on their behalf? Who doesn’t like the sound of knowing that their estate agent has the time to do everything properly and personally? The number-one reason we see so many property sales through from negotiating an offer to successful completion is because we take the

Stephen Newberry

Andrew Tully

time to communicate with all parties involved. We also have the time to spend longer preparing and presenting a property that is coming on the market with us. That includes creating our 3-D tours and virtual reality presentations, which ensures a property gets the maximum amount of online attention. We’re excited and optimistic about 2021 and look forward to helping more people achieve their property goals this year. Let’s hope for better times and less uncertainty.

Stephen and Andrew PS: Curious to know what your home is worth and how we would market it? Feel free to get in touch.

Another year, another lockdown. What a start to 2021! Gardeners as a species are generally patient and stoical souls. We are used to frustration from the weather (too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry); the idiosyncrasies of plant growth (‘that plant was never meant to grow that big/ small’); the failure of some plants to respond to the perfect conditions into which we have planted them and then to totally ignore the nurturing we have given them. All of this is compounded by weeds, which continue to prosper and procreate and wilfully disregard our determination to thwart them.

• LAWN MOWING • HEDGE CUTTING • TREE SURGERY • LAWN RETURFING • POWER WASHING & GUTTERS • SOFT LANDSCAPING • CLEARANCE • WEED KILLING • GREEN WASTE REMOVAL

Nathan Peters 01273 458550 01323 333433 www.greenhavengardens.co.uk nathanpeters@greenhavengardens.co.uk @greenhavengardens @greenhavengardens

78

And then our perennial optimism is dashed by news of another Lockdown. In reality, most of us know we shouldn’t be gardening at this time of year. The ground is so wet we risk destroying its structure by trampling on it and we know that no new plant will appreciate having its roots pressed into such inhospitable surroundings. It’s too cold to prune (fresh cuts need warmer conditions to heal rapidly and new growth will be unprotected by surrounding greenery), and it is much too dark and chilly for most seeds to germinate and seedlings to prosper – certainly in a polytunnel. So frankly, despite our desire to crack on and fulfil our persistent dream that this year our gardens will be better than last, gardening should not be on the agenda until spring truly is in the air. In truth, however, at Seaford Community Garden it is not just about gardening. It’s about sociability and support. It’s about comparing gardening notes and offering advice, it’s about sharing jokes over tea and cakes, and sometimes it’s about sharing sadness and anxieties – we know it’s sometimes easier to share emotions when your head is buried in the weeds and no one can see your face. And that is what we are missing as much as the gardening. But in view of the new restrictions, for the foreseeable future, we can’t open the gates. Nonetheless, we will endeavour to put our best wellington boot forward, metaphorically if not in reality. We can clean the tools at home, Val and Brian can tidy the shed (again), we will plan the vegetable rotation and discuss new plantings over the phone and, if our collective memories are still functioning after so little stimulation, we will write new labels for the plants (again!). We have some new volunteers waiting to come and help, which is wonderful, and as soon as we are able, we will show them how good it can be at Seaford Community Garden, and at the same time welcome back all our other equally patient and stoical supporters. Our December competition was entitled ‘Winter Wonderland’ and as you can see from the photos, there are some delightful interpretations. However, personally speaking, I would prefer it if we didn’t have a real winter wonderland. Instead, the thought of spring is one of the main motivations to look to the future in these difficult days. We have been encouraged by news of future planned events by Sussex Area NAFAS (The National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies). They celebrate the Area’s Diamond Anniversary at Leonardslee in September and we all sincerely hope that this will go ahead. Apart from that we have other events to look forward to – Chelsea in May, Chichester Cathedral Flower Festival in June, Hampton Court in July and Winchester Cathedral in September. We only hope that these dates are sufficiently far off for the vaccine to have been distributed and for us all to resume something resembling our normal lives. In the meantime we flower arrangers will continue to endeavour to brighten up our homes with some of the lovely spring flowers that are now starting to appear.

(Galanthus) nodding their white flower-heads, colourful early crocus, golden winter aconite (Eranthis hyemalis), and the lovely blue and yellow Iris Reticulata towards the end of the month. Add a few herbaceous Hellebores and your February garden will be blooming lovely. th on

What a wicked winter we are enduring with COVID-19 continuing to command our lives, but it isn’t all gloom and doom. February is the last month of winter and days start to lengthen as spring beckons. A crisp, sunny, February day is certainly an invitation into the garden, to survey any winter damage and do those jobs that are recommended for the month, but beware of working on wet soil, where you will do more harm than good. Despite the cold there are flowers to be found in the February garden. Early Camellias will be showing a few blooms, and some winter-flowering shrubs are still going strong, but it is the early bulbs that are providing drifts of colour, ideally planted under trees or shrubs, or naturalized in grass. In a sheltered garden you might see daffodills in flower, you will certainly see snowdrops

Pruning Clematis

Clematis can be a pruning puzzle and my tip on this subject is to keep your clematis plants labelled, so that you will be able to identify the correct pruning group. The key to pruning clematis is flowering time; the earlier a clematis comes into bloom the less pruning it will need. The following advice has been gleaned from the RHS website and other experts. Group 1 early vigorous spring flowering varieties e.g. Clematis species alpina and montana, flower on short shoots from growth produced the previous summer. These need no regular pruning but if necessary prune immediately after flowering when all danger of frost is passed. They should be given ample space on a house wall or through a tree to suit their rampant growth. Group 2 large flowered hybrids that flower May to June on the previous year’s wood – some will flower again in late summer on new growth. This group includes popular varieties like ‘Nelly Moser’ and ‘The President.’ Light prune in late winter, removing tangly top growth just as far as a plump bud or growing shoot. Aim to retain a framework of old wood whilst stimulating new shoots to maximise flowering throughout the season. Group 3 late flowering clematis that flower on new growth made from the base each year e.g. C. texensis ‘Princess Diana.’ Cut back hard, typically in February, just as buds are starting to emerge. Cut all old stems to the lowest pair of healthy buds 15-30cm above soil level.

Trees for SeafoRd

When I was a child, over sixty years ago now, trees and hedgerows always featured in my walks to school, to the shops and to friend’s houses. We moved under the shade of trees in the summer, collected conkers in the autumn, found shelter from the winter winds and ate the new leaves of Hawthorn and Beech in the spring. We walked along green corridors and if I had drawn a map of my locality at the time, it would have featured these beautiful trees and shrubs, and the animals lurking among the leaves.

When I moved to Seaford recently I was fascinated by the old photos of the town and I particularly noticed how many more roads were tree lined in those ‘olden days’. How different a walk down Broad Street would have been with trees providing shade, colour and interest; improving the air quality and locking in the carbon that is playing havoc with our weather. So I was heartened to discover Trees for Seaford has been planting trees to recreate these vital green corridors, helping to restore habitats for wildlife and pleasant places for people.

Most people are now aware of the massive reduction in insect population and of the animals and birds that rely on them. Without this wildlife, we can’t grow food. Our towns are becoming more important as feeding stations and habitats for birds, insects and animals and we need to provide them with the green routes to move around. It’s really important that our gardens provide food and shelter for wildlife, but also vital that the verges, streets and public green spaces offer a connecting network of green corridors. If you would like to see more trees along the verges in your street, please get in touch with Trees for Seaford. Better still, come and join us and help to create those green corridors for people and wildlife. https://treesforseaford.wordpress.com/ Contact us: TreesForSeaford@gmail.com Facebook.com/treesforseaford Photos from top: Elm trees in Broad Street; Trees for Seaford volunteers; White-letter Hairstreak by Bob Eade.

Seaford is a special town and we welcome many visitors. But did you know that it’s also on the map for a particular butterfly, the White-letter Hairstreak? It’s here because it relies on elm trees and Seaford is one of its strongholds. And that’s one of the reasons why Trees for Seaford is out planting trees at the beginning of December last year. Our streets used to be lined with elms before many had to be felled because of Dutch Elm disease. You may have seen the lines of sad stumps left by the felling. The White-letter Hairstreak is an uncommon butterfly that lives out its whole lifecycle in these trees and it has suffered major number reductions. Trees for Seaford is planting back elms that are resistant to the disease as part of the Seaford White-letter Hairstreak Initiative. Answers on page 43

u3a News Seaford u3a is increasingly offering online events. These have been increased over the course of the pandemic and are proving to be a hit with members. Not all of the Seaford u3a members are happy using computers but a substantial number are and can take advantage of what is on offer.

of performances on YouTube. John followed up this successful talk with another, this time on the opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’ by Engelbert Humperdinck (the composer not the pop singer!). Again he had chosen YouTube performances of the opera to follow. These talks and the performances have been excellent, the operas well chosen and the presentation very good. David Hitchin’s latest offering online is ‘An Unreliable History of Art’, a light-hearted and amusing whizz through several centuries of ‘important’ paintings. Lots of lovely illustrations and a witty text. Learn a bit and laugh a bit with this one!

The first online event was a talk by David Hitchin on ‘The Legal Fictions of A.P. Herbert’. This was a novel subject which demonstrated some of the clever fables of that writer; some of them were so realistic that they have been referred to as authentic cases. This was followed by a talk from James Taylor FRSA, formerly curator of pictures at the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His talk on ‘The Voyage of the Beagle’ was full of illustrations and most interesting. It placed Darwin’s journey on the Beagle in the context of other artists and scientists who also sailed on the ship’s most famous voyage. He gave a particularly good character description of Robert Fitzroy, captain of the Beagle, a scientist in his own right. His particular interest was meteorology for which he later became well known and was made a Fellow of the Royal Society. Next came the virtual coffee morning. More than fifteen members brought along their cups of coffee and sat in their own homes to chat. It was very pleasing to note that some of the members present were quite new to u3a and had come along to meet others. This was of course the purpose of the ‘real’ coffee morning in u3a’s former life and the virtual coffee morning was serving the same purpose. After a first general chat there were three ‘rooms’ created and members could go into one of these to talk with two or three others. Such clever technology! Opera buffs have had a treat – a talk by u3a member John Cremona on Puccini’s comic opera Gianni Schicchi which members could follow with a choice

Members enjoyed James Taylor’s talk on the Beagle so much that he was invited to give another in January entitled ‘Brilliant British Humour in the Forgotten Art of the Picture Postcard: 1840 to 1950’. ‘Brilliant’ was a good description. Members can also find further talks on a host of subjects on the national u3a website (u3a.org.uk). Most are free, though registration is necessary and it seems that numbers are limited. Go to ’Online events’ to have a look. For more information about Seaford u3a see the website: www.u3asites.org.uk/seaford. Yew

Palm Sunday commemorates Jesus’ famed donkey ride into Jerusalem. Recreating that palm-branch-strewn journey in Britain has been botanically challenging, since palm trees don’t grow in our climate. Instead, churches gathered sprigs of native yew to provide the ceremonial décor and in some areas, the Sunday before Easter became known as Yew Sunday. And that’s why every churchyard has a yew. Well, actually the yew’s churchyard connection is because yews are evergreen and can miraculously regrow from a dead stump. The trees were planted as a symbol of everlasting life and a reminder of the Easter resurrection. But, hold up; how come over 500 churchyard yews in England and Wales are older than their churches? It must mean that the yews themselves were pagan places of worship and the churches were built around them. Or they were planted on the graves of plague victims to purify the dead. Or it could be something to do with long bows. Or keeping the waiting congregation sheltered and dry each Sunday. No one seems sure where this association started but, whatever the reason, yews look right at home in churchyards. Dark, dense and unmoving they solemnly preside over the sad ceremonies held underneath their boughs and have seen generations come and go (but mostly go). Yews themselves deliver death and every part of them is highly poisonous – their leaves, their bark, their seeds. Only the fleshy red arils around the toxic seeds are harmless, encouraging birds to feed on them and disperse the poisonous cargo within. Yet death itself does not seem to inconvenience the yew. Two rival British yews are advertised as the oldest living thing in Europe, at an alleged 5,000 years old. Not many yews in Sussex can rival these great evergreen granddaddies. Most of our whippersnappers are probably just a couple of hundred years old. The problem is it’s hard to accurately age a yew. As they get older, their blood-red heart-wood rots, leaving them

hollow inside and without traditional growth rings. Its heart may no longer be in it but that won’t stop the yew from growing. One of the oldest yews in Sussex can be found in Stedham churchyard near Midhurst. It’s estimated to be a mindboggling 2,500 years old. Over in Wilmington, at the foot of the Long Man, a monstrous yew dominates the churchyard. At a reputed age of 1,600 the tree is 600 years older than the church. Supported by wooden props and straining against rusting chains, it’s as if a travelling circus is exhibiting an aging dinosaur. It’s worth a visit to both these old timers. Standing in the shadow of a plant that is 40 times older than you is humbling and a reminder that for us mere humans, life is brief. Open Wide!

The truth about yawning The average adult yawns 20 times per day, and once you feel one coming on, they are almost impossible to suppress.

Why do we yawn?

There is no scientific consensus on why we yawn. One theory argues that when humans are tired, we stop taking deep breaths, which causes a build-up of carbon dioxide in the body, and a yawn might be a special kind of respiration, to increase oxygen quickly, while expelling carbon dioxide more efficiently. During a yawn we compress the muscles of the face, and drive oxygen-enriched blood to the brain.

Why are yawns contagious?

We are six times more likely to yawn if we see someone else yawn. This may be related to a phenomenon called social mirroring, where animals imitate the actions of others. Yawning is not the only mirrored behaviour – smiling, scratching, leg crossing and laughing also fall into this category. Mirror neurons in the brain match what we sense and feel to the way we move, so if you see someone scratch their nose, you feel what it feels like and may feel compelled to do it too. The most likely reason for mirroring is social bonding. It’s a form of communication and a sign to others that we are empathetic.

Fascinating fact

Yawning is so contagious that you will probably have yawned at least once while reading this! Louise Addison

Welcome to Cycle Seahaven With the continuation of restrictions affecting all our lives there has never been a better time to grab your bike out of the shed, pop on your helmet and cycle out for some fresh air and exercise. The are numerous benefits to cycling. The obvious one of course is to get fitter, however exploring your local area on a

bike can also be exhilarating. The fresh air clears the head, the scenery puts a smile on your face and there is always someone else out exercising to wave hello to helping us to feel and keep in touch with the world we know. There has definitely been a massive uptake of cycling during 2020 and I am sure this will continue as more and more people benefit from this wonderful pastime. how to keep safe and warm during winter riding or maybe just need some friendly advice on sprucing up your bike, then why not consider joining Cycle Seahaven, your local cycling club? Our cycling club has members from Peacehaven, Newhaven and Seaford who, when we are not restricted, gather together to enjoy Rider Leader-led routes, both on and off road. The rides vary in length and routes, making them accessible for beginners right through to the most adventurous riders. Obviously with restrictions in place we are unable to lead rides, however the club has remained friendly and supportive, and many of our members

still meet up (following strict government guidelines of course) to enjoy a safe ride and then share their journey and photos on our private social media page. In January the club launched a new programme open to all our members which has allowed them to explore some of the favourite routes of our Ride Leaders. These can be done at any time and on your own, with your household or with a friend, and lets you explore areas you may never have cycled. There really is no better time than to take up a new challenge. So why wait, visit our website www.cycleseahaven. org.uk and take out a membership. At just ÂŁ7 per person you have nothing to lose and a whole new adventure to begin. Joanne Barlow Chair for Cycle Seahaven

Seaford Choral Society Well, it’s been almost a year since we last met to sing together. It certainly makes us realise how much we appreciated not only using our voices but the bonds and friendships we shared on a weekly basis. We have kept in touch with newsletters, and Colin our MD held Zoom sessions every Monday night to keep us all singing. We also held quiz sessions and a coffee morning, all of which proved successful. At Christmas we were more adventurous and had a Christmas gathering on Zoom using Carols as our Christmas Quiz theme. Some of our members have been keeping us updated with their hobbies during Lockdown. One member sends regular reports on his exciting flights whilst another has made good use of the time to get his Triumph Herald into tip-top condition. One of our members goes for early morning walks with her camera, taking the most stunning photos. Below are two of my recent favourites, taken in the freezing fog.

Of course we are all hoping for our vaccinations fairly soon and once we are all done we hope to be back together by September. In the interim Colin, our MD is rolling out our next weekly Zoom rehearsals. It will be a luxury for us to be able to spend some quality time working on one of our favourites, Fauré’s Requiem. We have sung it a few times on Good Friday but we don’t usually have time to make the most of it. Rehearsals are run by our MD, Colin and our accompanist, John. Zoom doesn’t allow us to sing together because each person has his or her own time-lag (sounds horrible) but this means you can sing away as enthusiastically as you wish without anyone hearing you. You are most welcome to join us if you would like to have a go. Just start up Zoom and type in the appropriate meeting ID shown below (you
