This month we have news from the New Mayor of Seaford, including her role so far and which charities she will be supporting during her term in office (page 4). We have statistics from Seaford & Bishopstone Neighbourhood Watch that show how safe Seaford really is (page 84), and find out who will be swimming the Channel to raise funds for The Youth Counselling Project (page 8). There are plenty of art exhibitions including Seaford Art Club’s Annual Exhibition (page 26), Uno 22: Eight (page 20) and The Last Minute Artists (page 59) – all this in the run up to Artwave which starts next month on 3rd September. Music-wise, we have news from Seaford Choral Society and a review of their recent sell-out concert (page 22), whilst Concentus also sang their hearts out this summer (page 44). As always, we have a range of articles on helping Seaford’s flora and fauna to survive – Trees for Seaford (page 14), Greenhavens Network (page 37), Churches Count on Nature (page 100) and On the Verge (page 104). We can all do our bit and more to support this wonderful world that we live in and share. Have a great August – enjoy!

Councillor Olivia Honeyman, is New Mayor of Seaford The Town Council held its Annual Meeting on Thursday 21st May and is pleased to announce that Councillor Olivia Honeyman was elected as Mayor of Seaford for the coming municipal year, running until May 2023. Councillor Olivia Honeyman brings a wealth of experience to the position having been a Town Councillor since 2015 and a District Councillor from 2015 to 2019 – she was thrilled and honoured to have been appointed in this, her eighth year of service on the Town Council. Upon receiving the chain of office from the outgoing Mayor Councillor Rodney Reed, Mayor Olivia Honeyman thanked Councillor Reed for executing the position with such distinction and for all that he had achieved during his two years in office, with the support of his consort, his wife, Ann Reed. Shortly after entering office, Mayor Olivia Honeyman said ‘I am honoured to become the Mayor of Seaford. Many thanks to everyone who has supported and believed in me, especially my family, friends, and fellow Councillors. Seaford is a great town to live in, with a very active community. I know that there is a lot of hard work ahead of us and we can all work together in Seaford to promote the town.’ Immediately following the election of Mayor, Councillor Liz Boorman was elected as Deputy Mayor of Seaford and is looking forward to working alongside and supporting the Mayor. During her initial few weeks in office, Mayor Olivia Honeyman has already attended a number of events, including but not limited to: the Seahaven Business Awards; The Salts Tennis Courts Opening; Homelink AGM; Seaford Platinum Jubilee Beacon Lighting Ceremony; and Seaford Baptist Church’s Concentus Sings Summer. Between herself and the Deputy Mayor, the Mayor is keen to attend as many events as possible over the coming year.

4

It is customary that each Mayor selects a charity they wish to support during their term in office. The Mayor is pleased to announce that she has chosen Waves Seaford, Seahaven Storehouse and Refuge as her chosen charities to support. When asked about her choices, the Mayor said: ‘All three are in some ways linked together in what they do – providing vital support to our local families and households. I think it’s really important to do things in the local community because there is so much going on at the moment.’ The Mayor is currently liaising with her chosen charities regarding how she can work with them throughout her year in office, and details of any planned events will be released by the Town Council once confirmed. In addition to her chosen charities, the 2022 – 2023 Mayoral theme ‘Healthy Living’ will champion the importance of healthier choices and lifestyles. The Mayor says ‘I have chosen Healthy Living as my Mayor’s theme. I used to be very overweight and very unfit. Fifteen years ago, I decided to do something about my weight and fitness issues. I now know the importance of keeping fit, maintaining a healthy weight and the positive impacts that this has on your life.’ Over the coming weeks and months, the Mayor will be working closely with the Town Council to help bring her theme to life. The Mayor is currently setting out her plans for this municipal year. The first mayoral event will be the Civic Service, to formally welcome her as the new Mayor of Seaford, which is due to take place at the end of July (more details to follow shortly). Updates will be available on the Mayor of Seaford’s Facebook page and the Town Council website. https://www.seafordtowncouncil.gov.uk/ Photo: Deputy Mayor, Councillor Liz Boorman and Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Olivia Honeyman.

by swimming with me for sections of training swims and feeding me at the beach. Holly was hoping to make the swim – geographically 21 miles but it can be as much as 35 miles according to currents and tides – during a window between late July and early August. To support her in this gargantuan effort visit http://www.justgiving. com/Holly-Manktelow2 A teacher at Seaford Head School is training hard to swim the English Channel to raise money for The Youth Counselling Project and CLL disease. In fact by the time you read this she may well have made her attempt. Holly Manktelow (photo above), who teaches music, said: ‘My friend was diagnosed with CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukaemia) a few years ago and has continued to work and inspire others while having the treatment, and The Youth Counselling Project (TYCP) does a great job of supporting students in Seaford Head School where I work and also has a presence in the local primary schools.’ She explained: ‘The reason I’m doing the Channel is because three years ago my uncle offered me the money to do it. I’d been swimming with Eastbourne Sea Swimmers for about eight years by that point, and some of the regulars there had suggested that I should do it, but it had only been an exciting idea until that point and nothing more. I’ve always loved swimming in the sea, and as a child spent most of my time on holiday in the water.’ Once the decision was made a training programme had to be devised. Holly continued: ‘My friend Jim Brent, who is an experienced open water swimmer, wrote me a training plan last September which involved a lot of pool swimming and some gym work. Then from April onwards we’ve been gradually increasing the amount of time in the sea.’ For example, at the time of writing, early July, she was undertaking swims of eight and seven hours over the next weekend with a six-hour night swim and an eight-hour day swim the following weekend. ‘My team involves four swimmers from the group. They are doing a great job at supporting and encouraging me

8

Other very generous contributions from local people to TYCP include £650 raised by Broad Street shop Scoop and Weigh’s raffle and £100 from Seaford Community Cinema. The quiz at The Old Plough in June raised £156 from entry fees and raffle. Note for diaries: the next quiz will take place on Tuesday 27th September at 8pm. The Youth Counselling Project is also delighted to report a donation of £4,900 from The Worshipful Company of Grocers’ The Grocers Charity. This will pay for nearly 10 blocks of 10 sessions of counselling by trained therapists. In the coming academic year TYCP intends helping 193 students from the town’s five state schools. To find out more about the volunteer-run organisation or to donate go to www.tycp.org.uk

The Old Town Hall Community Tea Room In spite of the hang over from lockdown and various hits to the economy the Tea Room has continued to operate successfully throughout 2022. Our regular customers have always supported us and we have been fortunate enough to have had a lot of first-time visitors, many of whom have now become friends. It is amazing the diversity of people who come in for a tea or coffee. Only recently a couple visited who have not been to Seaford for a few years but made a point of calling in to see if we were still around. They said that very little had changed, which is part of why our regulars come, sometimes two or three times a week, because they feel at home with us. There is always a good atmosphere, and the quiet hum of conversation between tables. For those who don’t know, we are at the bottom end of South Street. We serve tea, coffee, biscuits and cake and we are staffed solely by volunteers who do a fantastic job keeping the place going – without them there would be no Old Town Hall Community Tea Room.

Seaford Rotary

Ann Reed: First Lady President of Seaford Rotary Club

Ann Reed became the first lady President of Seaford Rotary Club in the 75th anniversary year of its charter when the Presidential Chain of Office was ceremonially handed over during the President’s Evening at Seaford Golf Club on Wednesday 29th June. She becomes President as Canadian Jennifer Jones becomes the first woman President of Rotary International, the world-wide movement’s governing body, and has broken an all-male leadership tradition that has endured for 117 years! Ann, who in 2017 was the first lady member to join the Club, is the wife of former Seaford Mayor, Councillor Rodney Reed. They both come from Cornwall but cut their Rotary teeth in the multicultural district of Handsworth, Birmingham, before moving in 2006 to Bangladesh, where they relocated the management consultancy they had formed together in the West Midlands. Ann, a former Youth Training Scheme manager and a lecturer in Business and Management Studies, soon joined the Rotary Club of Baridhara in Dhaka, and in 2013 she became President – unsurprisingly, the first woman from the UK to do so in Bangladesh. She spearheaded many important projects there, including the provision of education to some of the country’s poorest families, and supporting and training charity workers who catered and cared for deprived children. As anybody would soon realise upon meeting Ann, she is very serious about the Rotary edict ‘Service Above Self ’ and the Rotary International 2022/23 motto ‘Imagine Rotary’, but is also a talented pianist and singer and a committed ‘social animal’ who is determined to help make Rotary membership enjoyable for all. This grandmother of twins has tagged her year of office ‘FUN’ – standing for Friendship and Fellowship; Unity of club and community; and New projects, New members, New friends, volunteers and partnerships.

10

She said: ‘I am honoured to be President of Seaford Rotary for 2022–23 and want to see members make dreams become reality while having lots of fun doing it. During the year I hope we will have the opportunity to imagine how we will present ourselves over the next five-to-10 years to the local community, and engage more and more with each other while continuing to give excellent Rotary service.’

Rainbow Walk

On Sunday 26th June, a colourful array of walkers and two Cycling Without Age trishaws walked or cycled from Splash Point to the Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club and back to raise money for charity. This was the second year of the event organised by a team of Seaford Rotarians led by Jean Cash. The participants set off from Martello Field under a bright and warm blue sky. The colourful procession was led by Jean Cash brightly attired as a Dolly Parton lookalike in a flowing pink ensemble including a pink guitar seated in one of the trishaws. The trishaws were soon caught by those on foot as when they came across members of the public out for an afternoon stroll along the seafront, they stopped to offer the pedestrians an opportunity to donate to their charity. As last year there was fun and laughter all the way, but it was a pity that the numbers of those wearing bright, outlandish outfits was down compared with last year. Seaford Rotary welcomes new members and new Friends of Seaford Rotary. For more information contact us on www.seafordrotary.org.uk. Trees for Seaford

Planning ahead

Although it’s high summer and the school holidays have only just started, it’s time to plan tree planting for this autumn/winter. Trees for Seaford is hoping to plant another 70 trees across the town, in streets and green spaces. Our tree expert, Keith Sacre, has been advising us on what sort of trees might be able to withstand Seaford’s wind and salty conditions for some locations near the seafront! This is the start of a long process, which involves assessing the level of resident support for trees on their road, then getting utility reports and electronic scanning for hidden problems, as well as gaining council approval. The benefits of roadside trees are being increasingly recognised – from improvements to wellbeing and mental health, and lowering street temperatures to increasing biodiversity and slowing traffic speeds, not counting increasing property values! We will also be working with some local groups such as the Women’s Institute, Churches Together and Seaford Rotary to plant some trees in Crouch Gardens for the Jubilee initiative, the Queen’s Green Canopy.

Caring for young trees

Through May and June, we have been out every few weeks administering some TLC – light pruning, mulching, and checking ties and stakes – to our young trees. We are particularly pleased with the success of the planting on Kingston Way, where the cherry trees planted last autumn are thriving and have delighted those living there with spring blossom. Our tree expert praised the success of the planting and suggested this should be notified to the Tree Council as an example of the community working together! We are sincerely grateful to the kind people living near newly-planted trees for keeping them watered during the recent dry weather – watering is crucial during the first few years of a tree’s life while it establishes a good root system.

Return to post-pandemic normality CCTV FIRE ALARMS ACCESS CONTROL INTRUDER ALARMS SMARTPHONE SECURITY APP

Finally, our volunteers celebrated the return of relative post-pandemic ‘normality’ with a midsummer gathering, to share a fish and chip supper and sharpen our brains on an eco- and Sussex-themed quiz – ‘What is a fraxinus?’, ‘Who lives in a holt?’ and ‘How many round church towers are there in the Ouse Valley?’, to name just a few!

We hope many of you will support our aims. Do keep up the watering and let us know if there are trees you are concerned about. You might even like to join us as a volunteer, which doesn’t necessarily mean you physically have to go out and plant trees! – we also need people with administrative and/or IT skills to give support. Seaford Little Theatre

Off the Hook

Our town’s drama society certainly picked a crowd pleaser with Off the Hook, written by Derek Benfield and directed with verve by Sharon Olieff. I picked the one quiet night of the week to see this farce, but the laughter and applause was at the level of a full house, and well deserved too. Briefly, the play concerns two shady characters both called, somewhat improbably, Harold Spooks – look, theatre can require the suspension of rational thought – who are in jail. One of them can lead his dodgy ‘pals’ to the loot he stashed away in a country hotel, but a mix up finds the wrong man, hilariously and energetically played by Dennis Picott, tipped out of the boot of a car and making his entrance tied up with rope and reduced to hopping with his two feet bound together. By this time we had been well warmed up by the talented Sue Williams as cleaner Edna who delivered her lines with comic asperity. And by professional actor Kim Sanger White, making her debut with SLT, who gave a cringingly good performance as the sex-crazed hotel owner’s wife Norah, all exaggerated body movements and propensity for pinching male bottoms before embarking on a kiss chase. Dug Godfrey as her husband ‘Call me Major’ Catchpole was the epitome of a certain type of snob who is all bombast but actually achieves little. This farce is typical of the genre, depending on perfectly timed entrances and exits, and the set designed by Alan Lade – more about him later – and built by the workshop team, required five doors and a staircase, plus an invisible escape-through-the-wine-cellar route

16

to manage. Oh, and a window to climb up to and fall from, the hapless Picott again. So on to Lade who took on the part of criminal Charlie Mullins at short notice owing to the illness of Lee Coleman-Porter, an SLT audience favourite. That Lade had a script in hand was easily forgotten as he put his well-honed acting skills to the fore. Fellow criminal Fred Baxter was ably played by Simon Fox in only his second SLT appearance. Again, this being farce, to whom would you match a pair of criminals but a magistrate. Angie Wright made a formidable Mrs Fletcher-Brewer, with the power to send all three ne’er do wells scuttling in and out of doors and up the staircase, often with Sanger White in hot pursuit. Making her adult acting debut was Corinne Jones in the part of her daughter Carol whose overbearing mother thwarted all male attentions. Which leaves Debbie Cox playing her second role for SLT, this time as pert leopardskin-clad Polly, who, alarmingly, had been spotted in the prison visitors’ room, and her confused dad, amusingly played by Phil Armstrong. So, back to the direction. Olieff should really have been up there on stage with her players as they took their curtain call to prolonged applause. She kept this ingenious and fast-paced Ferrari of a show running on all cylinders and got a blistering performance from her acting team. Keep the revs up SLT. Seaford Photographic Society We are on our summer break at the moment so we have included a few members’ photos of local scenes from earlier in the year. You still have time to visit our annual exhibition, which runs until Saturday 6th August. This is the first time we have had the chance to show some of the club’s work since before Covid, in 2019. There will be around 60 prints on display, together with a slideshow of digital images. Club members will be on hand to chat, and there will be a raffle to win your favourite print from those on display. Most of the prints will be for sale and there will be

many more, all at very reasonably prices, in browsers. We are at a new venue this year, St Leonards Church, in the centre of town. Entry is free and the exhibition is open every day from 10am to 1pm (5pm on Saturday 30th July). If you have any interest in photography do come along and have a browse and a chat. The club meets every Friday evening from September until the end of May. On the first and third Fridays of the month we get together in person at Seaford’s Constitutional Club, Crouch Lane, BN25 1PU, for print competitions, talks from local speakers, practical evenings and workshops. On all other Fridays we meet on Zoom only, for digital image competitions and guest speakers from further afield. We cater for all levels of skill and experience, from absolute beginners up

18

to those who have been taking photos since the days of film cameras. You don’t need to have expensive equipment, and even mobile phones can take excellent quality images these days. Being a member of the club is all about meeting and socialising with like-minded people (we are a friendly bunch), and improving your photography. We have a full programme arranged for the 2022/23 season. As well as the print and digital image competitions, we have talks on a wide range of subjects including Smartphone Photography, Fine Art Flower Photography, Getting Started in Wildlife and Seascape Photography, and Surrealism. Most people find that the competitions, as well as being fun, are an excellent way to learn and improve. The guest judges provide a critique of each image (anonymously – so you don’t get your images pulled apart in front of everybody!) and suggestions on how they think the photos might be improved.

The first meeting of the new season, on Friday 2nd September at the Con Club, is where we welcome everybody back after the summer holidays and share some of the photos we have taken during that time. Hopefully we will also be welcoming some new members. If you are interested, just come along on the night and see what you think, with no obligation. If you’d rather try one of our on-line meetings first, just drop us an email via the website and we’ll send you a Zoom invite. You can see all you need to know about the club on our website www.seafordps.org. This month’s featured artist is ceramicist Liza Morton whose work is featured on our current poster. Liza like so many students who attended either Brighton or Sussex Universities, fell in love with the Sussex coast and countryside, settled here and made it her home.

Liza Morton BA (Hons) PGCE – Ceramics Originally from Essex, Liza Morton studied Wood, Metal, Ceramics and Plastics at Brighton University in the late 1990s, specialising in Plastics and Visual Art in her final year. She then went on to complete a PGCE,

20

a post-graduate course in teaching art, culminating in a 20-year-long career as an Art teacher and department head in several schools in Surrey. Liza taught Art and Photography to A Level, with her students obtaining outstanding levels of achievement every year. In 2016 Liza moved back to Sussex and became a fulltime Artist and Ceramicist. Liza’s ceramics are inspired by her love of animals. Her Woofing Fabulous brand of animal sculptures always bring a smile to her customers, who often start with a small sculpture and then move on to commission a larger piece of their furry friends. Following a long period of sketch and design work, (her beautifully kept and detailed sketchbooks are never far from her side) Liza uses a combination of hand built and thrown clay structures to create the forms in her work. She also uses a variety of glazes to build up texture. Her work is fired in her own kiln nicknamed ‘Bertha’ Liza’s work can be grouped into several collections: Colourful Dog Sculptures (using buff clay for structure), and Flora and Fauna – (Outdoor stoneware ceramics and garden ornaments). Liza’s signature quirky seagulls on deckchairs have been sold all over the world through www.woofingfabulous.co.uk, each one unique and handmade in her seaside studio. Liza has been a member of the Sussex Art Collective since 2017. Her work is also available in Brighton Open Houses every May during the Brighton Festival. She opens her own studio to the public in Saltdean and is also a member of Kemptown Arts. Liza’s work is also available through her website www.lizamorton.com and you can follow her making process on her very popular instagram page @woofingfabulous.

Seaford Choral Society Seaford Choral Society thank all who came to our SELL OUT concert!

We had so much fun learning ‘Zimbe!’, and singing in the concert was just joyful. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who was buzzing so much I couldn’t sleep until the early hours. We performed to a full house (have I already mention that?) alongside the incredible professional musicians of our jazz quintet and The Semiquavers, pure voiced 7–9-year-olds from Seaford Primary School. It’s been a wonderful challenge. The music for the collection of traditional African songs is tricky enough, but it is in five African languages (including Zulu and Swahili), PLUS we started the night by singing the Ukrainian National Anthem in Ukrainian. We are obviously fluent in all six languages now… The choir, Semiquavers and musicians had practised our parts separately, and we met for the first time that afternoon with less than two hours to pull it all together under the positive and inspiring direction of Colin Hughes (SCS) and Kate Steer (Semiquavers).

Singing with the band (piano, bass, sax, drums and percussion) was so different compared to our usual piano accompaniment. But still, hearing all the parts was the first time it all started to make sense. We started the concert by singing the Ukrainian National Anthem arranged by our super-talented accompanist John Eady. He hadn’t been impressed by any existing arrangements, so wrote one especially for us (and has also written an arrangement for the New English Concert Orchestra, which premiered recently at Blenheim Palace). The rest of the first half was a lighter treat, including solos by the wonderful mezzo-soprano Rebecca Hughes, and Trevor Sheldrake from the band on clarinet. Amelie Peerless, Megan Roylance and Isobel Peerless, violinists from Seaford Primary school, showed remarkable composure and confidence to perform a beautiful duet and solo. After the essential refreshment break, we all took a deep breath, and after just a one bar introduction, dived headlong into the 40 non-stop minutes of complicated rhythms, sweet melodies, and brave, exposed entries for nine separate voice parts, plus jazz quintet, that is Zimbe! ‘Njooni! Zimbe!’ – Come! Sing the songs of Africa! Children sit in the playground passing and tapping pebbles. ‘Pete! Pete!’ Vulture! Vulture! – parents call their kids in for dinner. The sun sets… the sun rises… Mothers of imprisoned sons of apartheid sing a lullaby. A drunken man dances himself to death at a wedding. ‘Freedom is coming. Oh yes, it is!’ With most of the right notes in most of the right places (the Semiquavers were flawless!), we sang our postpandemic hearts out, raised the roof and rocked Seaford with African rhythms. When one of the children was asked about it on Monday he had been blown away by the experience and said: ‘If I had to give it a number out of 10 it would be infinity!’ Generous donations also raised £325 for our two nominated charities. If you’d like to sing Brahms Requiem with us, contact us through our website or Facebook page. We are also starting a Learn to Sing course for anyone new to choral singing or feeling a bit rusty. Seaford Art Club Annual Exhibition Our annual exhibition is being held at the Crypt Gallery Church Street Seaford, from 26th - 31st August. Entry is free. Open from 10am - 4pm.

Clock Restoration Service

The exhibition aims to show the extraordinary variety of work our members create. Henry Moore said ‘To be an artist is to believe in life’ and certainly a great deal of life is represented in the show! On display there will be paintings, collage, craft work and cards, all for sale. This is your chance to purchase an original work of art for a reasonable price, or you may want to just have a look at what the club does and find out more about it. Members of the club will be stewarding the exhibition so please ask if you would like more information. Seaford Art Club was founded in 1954, making it one of the oldest clubs in the area. It’s a very friendly and sociable club with a varied programme aimed at encouraging members to experiment with different materials and techniques. We include life drawing in our programme, as well as demonstrations and workshops. Earlier this year members enjoyed a visit to the Towner Gallery to see the artwork they have stored in their archives, and a group went up to the Courtauld Institute in London to see the Van Gogh self portraits and the rest of its collection. We are at present organising more trips to galleries for inspiration, and gardens where we can also sketch. After two years of the pandemic we have had our annual lunch which is always a welcome get together. July has seen the start of our outdoor painting programme with venues cleverly chosen to include a handy pub or café where we can have some lunch! Although this is our annual show at The Crypt Gallery, the club holds a permanent exhibition in The View restaurant at Seaford Head Golf Club with over 40 works for sale, a display which is changed every month. So why not enjoy some art together with a coffee and a bite to eat.

The club is located in the Flint Barn by Wave Leisure on Sutton Corner, Seaford. It is a self-supporting club and has been very active since re-opening after Lockdown, with croquet played on the adjoining lawn on sunny days, a Table Tennis Tournament in May, and the Jubilee Celebration, which was supported by Maria Caulfield MP and Councillor Christine Brett. The Re-Inflatables is a new business based in Seaford

X

Don’t throw away old inflatables – recycle them instead!

We recycle old inflatable pool and beach toys such as lilos, dinghies, arm bands, paddling pools, beach balls (and inflatable camp beds). These items are currently not recyclable and end up in landfill, so we are doing our bit to protect the environment!

Seaford Climate Hub (in the old NatWest Building, 4 Clinton Place) has agreed to be a drop-off point so you can take your old inflatables to the Hub for recycling and we will arrange collection. Please also consider bringing back any inflatables from your holiday so they can be recycled too! Each item will then be carefully turned into individual and unique bags of all shapes and sizes: purses, pouches, swim bags etc. These will be sold via our website (currently under construction) and part of the proceeds from every sale will go to the RNLI. We are hoping to have drop-off points throughout Sussex (hopefully soon on Seaford seafront), but in the meantime for more information on how to get your old inflatables to us (if you can’t get to the Hub in Seaford) please phone: 07765 903165

We are also looking for home workers, so if you are a competent sewing machinist looking for piece work, please get in touch, keeping it local to reduce our carbon footprint!

The Re-Inflatables are supported by: l

Chyngton school marked highly in Ofsted report! School inspectors say that the school is good in all areas; pupils are safe, happy and kind to each other, and staff have high expectations ‘right from the start’. Ofsted selected Chyngton School, in Seaford, for a full inspection during SATS testing week in May 2022. From the very start of the inspection, it was clear that the inspectors recognised the work of the school during the Covid pandemic and particularly what has been done since then to help children recover, catch-up and move on with their learning. Children told inspectors that Chyngton is a happy place to be. They said that the school values ‘be kind, be safe, be ready for learning’ match their own experience.

Inspectors were also impressed with the quality of education at Chyngton, saying that the school’s ‘curriculum is ambitious’ and that ‘subject leaders are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.’ This means that pupils ‘build their knowledge well.’ The report states ‘Children behave well…they have a voice in the school’ and ‘pupils with SEND are fully included’. Staff and Governors are delighted with the verdict. Headteacher Robin Tollyfield said that it is the best inspection report that the school has had in the last ten years and represents a resounding vote of confidence in the whole team at Chyngton. Grace, a Year 6 pupil shared her experience: ‘Chyngton is like a friendly community. You learn to be proud of yourself. Even if you make a mistake or fail at something, you learn to always try your best.’ Photo: Children have been learning that re-wilding their garden helps sustainability.

A wilder garden doesn’t have to look messy…

Well, the great news is that you do not need to have vast wild areas or lots of space to help wildlife. With a 60% decline in flying insects in the last 20 years and the fact bees pollinate probably 50% of the food on our plates, we do need to increase our wild areas to help. Research shows a mixture of formal gardening and wild is the quickest and most effective way to increase biodiversity, which has huge benefits for all areas of your garden.

Ways to help: l

l

l

l

l

l

l

l

l

l

Leave your lawn even an inch or two longer in as small a patch as a square metre. This provides refuge for many insects and food for birds. A window box or pot planted with nectar-providing plants for pollinators is a brilliant stop-off for bees and bugs passing from garden to garden. A little dish with water and stones also provides a drink essential to all in the hot weather with reduced risk of insects drowning. A single log drilled with holes that minibeasts can inhabit can be neat and installed upright somewhere or left on the ground. A bird box which can look very ornate and provide a home for our birds that will then help to kill the aphids etc. A pile of neatly stacked logs will still provide shelter for insects, bugs, amphibians and reptiles. A boxed-in compost pile will provide a space for slow worms, hedgehog and other insects. Make a pond or a mini pond, with native plants and surrounding vegetation, and most importantly, a safe way in and out of the pond e.g. a log or shallow slope. Grow flowers! If you have space, grow climbers and bushes! Grow hedges and trees! The more structure the better. Avoid using chemicals, slug pellets and always by peat-free compost.

Research has revealed that non-native flower species also provide essential nectar for pollinators and our gardens, and not only extend the nectar season but also help fill the June nectar gap in nature. Although nonnative species are usually best combined with native species, it is okay to go for the looks and flowers you wish. If you want a more formal looking space the classic lavenders are always a hit. The exotic echiums, bee balms and Agastache are also a veritable nectar bar. Wildlife passing through your garden doesn’t care if it’s native or not, neat or tidy, you can still provide an invaluable stepping stone from larger and wilder places. Online you can find planting plans for borders or top plants for windowsills! Bees love most of the herbs we enjoy for cooking, so you could have a win, win there! Please get in touch – Wilder Gardens Greenhavens wildergardens@greenhavens.network if you would like any more information on getting your garden wilder. And do share any of your lovely photos on our facebook page. Lewes WASPI (Women Against State Pension Injustice) Group

Purple-clad women born in the 1950s from all over Lewes, Seaford and Newhaven congregated at Seaford beach yesterday to reaffirm their demand for the compensation due to them. Almost a year ago, on 20th July 2021, the Ombudsman announced that there had been maladministration in the way that changes to the State Pension Age for women born in the 1950s were implemented. Since then, the Ombudsman has been investigating whether this maladministration led to injustice and, if so, to recommend compensation. Janet Blackman, Co-ordinator of the Lewes (WASPI) campaign, organised a special beach picnic on Seaford beach. ‘This month WASPI women all over the country are holding events to show we are not going away,’ she said. ‘6,500 women in Lewes are victims of DWP maladministration. We need fair and fast compensation. Failure to give 1950s women proper notice of the changes to our pension age had disastrous results. ‘All our financial planning for life after 60 went out of the window. Many had to sell or re-mortgage their homes, others had to continue working despite ill health, and others had to abandon commitments they had made to their families to provide care for grandchildren or elderly relatives.’

CONCENTUS SANG in SUMMER

And it was wonderful!

Concentus was back singing again, and how they sang was wonderful – right up to and over their expected high professional standard. Throughout the whole 19 items of the concert, the choir drew out the subtleties of the words they were singing and the colours of the emotions those words stood for, using beautifully emphasised crescendos and diminuendos and achieving spine-tingling 4/8-part harmonies, producing that rarely experienced sensation of the air vibrating in perfect harmony. To sustain these skills through such a varied programme reflects very highly on the abilities within Concentus and on the skill (and patience!) of Music Director Adrian White. The Prayer (C B Sager/D Foster) which was sung as a tribute to a much missed choir member, was a perfect illustration – one audience member quietly whispered ‘beautiful’ as she listened.

Singers Wanted!

If you enjoy singing, come along and join our mixed voice choir

Concentus Eastbourne’s Choir with a heart

We meet at Willingdon Community School, Broad Road, Eastbourne, BN20 9QX on Monday evenings from 7.15pm until 9.30pm For more information ring: 07799 116653 or email: info@concentus-sings.com

Please recycle this magazine when you have finished with it.

It is only possible to highlight a few of the gems there were in this concert: True Colours (B Seinberg/T Kelly) and This is Me from the Greatest Showman (B Pasek/ Justin Paul) highlighted themes currently much discussed in the media and elsewhere: the need for and the right everybody has to be appreciated for who and what they are – regardless of stereotypes and what is considered to be normal; Beautiful Ghosts from Cats (T Swift/A L Webber) sung as a solo with a very expressive touch by Jo Fowler, brought out sensitively the longing of children to feel loved and needed; the Carousel – Medley (Rogers and Hammerstein) had a nicely balanced range of songs, from the delicate If I love you to the rumbustious June is busting out all over with Maralyn Streeter singing When you walk through a storm as a solo; Steve Isted sang a solo in Sweet Caroline (N Diamond) – apparently voted the official song of the Jubilee by Radio 2 listeners – and the audience was invited to join in, which they did with vigour. The audience was also included – and equipped with flags to wave – in singing Jerusalem (C Parry), Rule Britannia (T A Arne), Land of Hope and Glory (E Elgar) and the National Anthem (composer unknown) – Concentus’ contribution to the Platinum Jubilee. However the audience were not expected to be able to sing the Ukrainian National Anthem which followed the above very British songs; the choir was roundly applauded for singing that in Ukrainian. There was much else to relish in this concert but you will have to come to Concentus’ Christmas Concert to see how very good this choir is – look out for information about it nearer the time. The audience showed how much they had enjoyed themselves by the prolonged clapping at the end of the show, so it was a very lively and appreciative crowd who left at the end of the concert, full of praise for Concentus and what they had listened to. Would you like to see how good it feels to sing in the friendliest choir around? Why not give Concentus a try? Rehearsals start again in September and you will be greeted at the door, given music and information and paired up with someone who will help show you the ropes and help you settle in. Seahaven Hard of Hearing Club This month, our speaker had to cancel one day before the meeting for health problems. Our treasurer, Wendy, came up trumps, showing photographs of many of the events we had held at the Club over the past years, and also with some lovely photographs of National Trust houses and gardens that she had visited. A raffle was held whilst members enjoyed tea and biscuits. Next month is our summer outing and we have arranged to visit Berwick Church for a talk on the restoration of the Bloomsbury wall paintings. Any members who have not put their names down but would like to come along please contact Pauline. The lip-reading classes will be finished for the term on 12th July and we will have a summer break. The dates for the new term will be in next month’s report.

Seaford Stamp & Postcard Club At time of writing the Club is preparing for our July meeting of thematic subjects beginning with P, Q and R, submitted by members. These evenings usually produce a myriad of subjects, so I thought I’d give you a taste of what we might show. For P, last Sunday for the bargain price of 20p at the Martello Fields boot-fair, I found a card sent from Belgium dated 1st April 1924 with a fish on it (image below). Why? Because on the Continent there is a tradition called Poisson d’Avril where a fish is given on that day as a token of... what? Well to be honest I’m not sure, can someone tell me?

Q could stand for Qatar. We will all know where that place is come this November and the World Cup, but 60 years ago, the country was still part of the British Persian Gulf protectorates, and used overprinted British stamps! Since then it has issued a lot of its own stamps, many linked to the Qatari Royal Family. R? This could stand for Registered mail. From the early days of the post after stamps were introduced, registration, payable by an extra fee, brought your letter or parcel a degree of security and possibly quicker delivery. Some countries (though not the UK) issued special stamps to cover the registered postal charge, including the USA. I hope this gives a flavour of our meetings, even if you weren’t able to attend – our next is on Wednesday 10th August at the Con Club, when we are having a display of European stamps from guest Bill Headley. Meetings are 7.15 for 7.30pm, the Club has a bar with light refreshments. Visitors welcome. Bob Brown Chairman Seaford and District Stamp & Postcard Club

Last Minute Artists

Cliffhanger 2

Last Minute Artists are back at South Hill Barn to build on the success of their debut Cliffhanger show at this iconic venue last summer. Cliffhanger 2 takes place at the old barn at the top of the lane leading up from Chyngton Way from 5th – 14th August when 19 Sussexbased artists are exhibiting 2 and 3D work, this time using all the space in the main barn. So if you thought last year’s show was big, you ain’t seen nothing yet. New this year is Lewes-based artist Sarah Burges who is known for her large oils of local landscapes and flowers, and whose rag rugs should make an arresting display. Also in the line-up is Lindy Dunbar, who specialises in portraying figures in movement such as dancers and acrobats, and Kathleen Dawson and Jane Wateridge who are both working on new exhibits for the show. Palo Almond paints deeply emotional landscapes in inks and watercolours. Also new this year are Clare Brown with colourful interpretations of the countryside, and Dolly De Moratti, who is back in Sussex after a spell developing her art in Berlin, with work referencing her large-scale screen prints and work with concrete. Returning are stained-glass artist Adele Walsh, Andrew Macdonnell with his often layered complex box art, Geraldine Edmonds, whose domestic and farm animal depictions are so loved, Lisa Bagot with her striking canvases of trees and animals, sculptor and painter Nigel Goss, Planksy whose painted sculptures of birds and people pop up all over town, Sally-Mae Joseph whose ceramics are proving as popular as her lively acrylics of the local landscape, ceramicist Adrienne Shields, urban landscape painter

and felt animal maker Sue Casebourne, Judy Dewsbery and Martin Everett who are showing mixed media drawings, photographs, wall hangings and kimonos representing six walks, and well-known landscape artist Sarah Gregson who in new works has been exploring the irony of the arrival on our shores of refugees after a frightening journey in an overcrowded boat landing amid seemingly oblivious frolicking sea swimmers. Whether you visit before or after a walk down to the Cuckmere to admire the Seven Sisters and Coastguard Cottages, do drop in to South Hill Barn, entrance free. THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF ST GEORGE In June, President Laurie Holland and Vice President Steve Saunders were once again invited to present Rosettes at the Denton Community Challenge held at Avis Way Denton. The Royal Society of St George has supported this event for many years now and was delighted to be able to assist once again. The weather was excellent and the Challenge was well supported and enjoyed by everyone. On 25th June, Armed Forces and Veterans Day was remembered and celebrated at The Martello Field, Seaford. As in past years the event was a joint venture between The Royal Society of St George and Seaford Town Council. The parade consisted of Veterans and

Cadets of the Services. A short service was conducted by the Revd Philpott and then the Salute was taken by the Lord Lieutenant, Andrew Blackman. After the Salute, the Lord Lieutenant spoke individually with all the participant, as did Maria Caulfield MP, together with the Mayor of Seaford, Councillor Olivia Honeyman and many other dignatories. Refreshments were provided by the The Royal Society of St George, which gave everyone a chance to meet and chat. Various organisations had stalls around the arena, and the car parking was again organised by members of the National Coastwatch Institute. With good weather, the event was enjoyable and successful. Are you struggling to lock your UPVC door? Try this simple 3 point test to see if your door needs adjusting before it breaks... With one hand... 1. Push the door closed 2. Lift the handle and let go 3. Turn the key

Business as usual, but from a safe distance

If you can’t do the above easily and have to hold the handle or force the handle to turn the key, then you need to get your door adjusted before it breaks. The weight of the door on a badly adjusted locking mechanism will eventually break, usually in the locked position!

For more information call Greg at Andy Anderson & Son Locksmiths

A view from the Potting Shed Showtime – Saturday 6th August, 1.30pm at Cradle Hill Community Primary School, Lexden Road, Seaford. August is showtime folks and after two showless years due to Covid the Committee is looking forward to welcoming both members and non-members to the Seaford and District Horticultural Society’s Main Show. To show oR not to show?

t

Yes, that is the question. Show quality demands near perfection, and preparation may have started months ago, but don’t despair if your produce fails to produce, as there could still be something suitable in your garden. Bear in mind Class 69: Wonky Veg. Section B Flowers offers numerous showing options; perhaps a potted begonia Class 19, a rose buttonhole Class 32, or maybe cut flowers, see Classes 36, 37 and 38. For those more at home in the kitchen there’s baking and preserves in Sections E and F, including a Coffee and Walnut Cake entry, Class 78, for men only (recipe supplied). And what about those photos on your phone? Photography Section G has several subjects including Novice Class 87 Something Nautical, for anyone who has not previously gained an award in any previous show for photography. Arts & Crafts is open to all you stitchers and knitters, while children can enter a Seascape Collage, do a bit of baking, or photograph My Best Friend. Kids love competitions, so no excuses, let’s show!

68

activities, plus refreshments, plant sales and metal sculptor Paul Cox from Newhaven. We are hoping for a good crop of entries in the various Show Classes; the majority are open to Society and affiliated members ONLY, but if you’re a crafty non-member you can enter Section H Arts & Crafts, and the Decorative Section A (2-6) flower arranging. Children have their own Classes in Section I, open to various age ranges and free to enter. Members can find full information and entry forms in their Annual Programme. For non-members the Show Schedule is available on our website and entry forms can be obtained from Fotobox in Broad Street, Seaford. Don’t miss the entry form deadline, Wednesday 3rd August, to Fotobox Broad Street by 4pm, or to Show Secretary Aideen Jones, 8 Sandgate Close, Seaford BN25 3LL by 5pm.

MEMBERS’ NOTICE BOARD SDHS Main Show Saturday 6th August at Cradle Hill Community Primary School, Lexden Road. See your Member’s Programme for full details. September’s social evening will welcome Mercy Morris to St Luke’s, Walmer Road on Tuesday 27th September at 7pm to talk about house plants. Also in September a coach outing to National Trust Polesdon Lacey on Thursday 8th. To reserve places contact Pippa Logan on 01323 491566.

Ain’t nature wonderful? ‘Come and look at this,’ said Phil, beckoning towards the wildlife pond. ‘That’s a female Southern Hawker dragonfly – one of the UK’s largest – laying her eggs.’ And sure as, well, eggs are eggs, there she was, labouring for the species amid the reeds and grasses of this delightful place, mostly maintained by James. Elsewhere the fruits of volunteers’ labours were starting to show promise. Beth reported that the first tomatoes went on sale on the first Wednesday of July, with many others ripening up in the poly tunnel for further Wednesday and Saturday morning sales. Courgettes and cucumbers were ready for harvesting too and French bean Amethyst, with purple beans that change to green when cooked and taste delicious, were growing in Brian’s recently built planter outside the classroom. Runner beans were twirling round their poles, the attractive red flowers contrasting brightly with purple and mauve poppies at their borders. And talking of bean poles, the subject of dreaded bindweed came up at coffee break, as in how to control/eradicate it, and veg man Phil suggested putting in extra poles to encourage the bindweed to climb solo while leaving his runners alone. Allison suggested digging as deep as possible to rid the ground of white root material; do this enough times and it will weaken – eventually – she said. However, the consensus was that there is nothing that a chemical-free gardener can do to totally get rid of the strangler. Oh well… I think we knew that really.

Elevenses is when work inside and outside the garden is discussed, like how visiting groups can be given a session to remember. The tots at Charlie Bears nursery were to be set to work planting tomatoes to add to the rhubarb planted earlier, and the English as a second language group could expect to deal with strawberry runners and plant these up for next year. Allison said a big thank you to Seaford Inner Wheel, whose members donated plants left over from their sale. The Community Garden will be at Cradle Hill School, Lexden Road on 6th August for Seaford Horticultural Show, where there will be competitions for adults and children in flower, fruit, veg, cookery and craft categories, entries members only, which includes us. Such is the enthusiasm for gardening that elevenses can be a mere 15 minutes, then it’s all hands on flower and veg beds again. And so it was that Ann was, like most of us, bemoaning Covid. While a very few volunteers were able to do a little during lockdowns, many less vital jobs had to be left and Ann couldn’t believe the way shrubs had taken over their allotted space. ‘I’m pruning shrubs which shouldn’t have grown the way they have thanks to the Covid shutdown,’ she said. As we observed at the start, but now with a little irony: Ain’t nature wonderful? Photo’s from top: Stan enjoys his coffee; A dragonfly lays her eggs on reeds around the wildlife pond; Ann gives overgrown shrubs a haircut; Courgette; Sunflower in the children’s garden; Purple poppy flourishing beside beans. Sussex Wildlife Trust

Grass Snake

‘Go wild in the country, where snakes in the grass are absolutely free.’ I can still remember Annabella Lwin, of new-wave pop group Bow Wow Wow, singing those words on Top of the Pops back in 1982: a clarion call for early eighties urbanites to get out into the wild. Annabella was ecologically correct. There are indeed free snakes out there, a fact that still thrills me each time I encounter one slithering through Sussex. As a child I thought snakes were exotic creatures, which hung off African jungle branches in Johnny Weissmuller Tarzan movies to convey a vague sense of something sinister. But there’s nothing sinister about the Grass Snake; the commonest of Britain’s three native snake species. Mesmerising eyes, gorgeous sleek scales of olive-green and a series of stripes along their flanks. For a cold-blooded reptile they sure look hot. A key identification feature is that yellow collar encircling the back of their head. Grass Snakes have been rather short-changed when it comes to their name; they’re

much better at swimming than they are at sitting in the grass (a bit like Johnny Weissmuller, who performed better in the water than he did on dry land). You’ll find Grass Snakes gliding through wet ditches and dykes, or even in your garden pond as they hunt for their favourite food: frogs and toads. These amphibious feasts really pile on the pounds, so when their snakeskin suits become too tight they slip out of them to reveal a larger, shiny set of scales underneath. They undertake several costume changes each year and can grow to an impressive size – two or three feet is typical but there are rumours of six-footlong monsters out there. Of course they’re nothing be scared of. If threatened they either pretend to be dead, hiss a lot or, according to my reptile book, ‘release a pungent, foul-smelling substance from their anal gland.’ In July the female Grass Snakes excavate a chamber in a mound of decaying vegetation – a compost heap is perfect. Inside, she lays 5-20 leathery eggs, and the heap’s heat and humidity cooks them to perfection. Set your egg timer for ten weeks and you’ll return to find pencil-sized baby snakes emerging into the world.

I guess not everyone followed Bow Wow Wow’s advice back in 1982, because when leading my wildlife walks I’m always amazed at how many adults have never seen a snake in Britain. But it’s never too late to go wild in the country. Michael Blencowe of the Sussex Wildlife Trust Photo: Grass snake by Dave Kilbey©.

Neighbourhood Watch Roundup

Special Edition Number 2: How Safe is Seaford Really? All the Statistics for Seaford East

Following on from last month’s statistics, this month we have a close look at what’s what in Seaford East. Having scrutinised the data for Seaford Central in the last edition (you can see it here if you missed it https:// issuu.com/seafordscene) we evidenced quite clearly that Seaford by comparison to other coastal towns, remains one of the safest with overall crime decreasing year upon year. Sussex Police has divided Seaford & Bishopstone into five areas, so to have a thorough look at what’s what in yours, head on over to https://www.sussex.police.uk/ area/your-area and enter your postcode. To save you a whole lot of time to get the overall picture, here’s our summary of all the data over the last 36 months.

From this graph, it is clear to see that crime is generally low and dropping year on year. An inspection of the overall stats for Seaford East identifies two main hotspots within the area with consistency. You can see the hotspots by visiting https://www.sussex.police.uk/ area/your-area/sussex/lewes/seaford-east/about-us/ crime-map. If you click on the hot spot on the map, this

84

will drill down to individual streets. Crime is otherwise near zero in any other part of Seaford East. These stats reflect reported crimes and once again this exercise underlines the importance of reporting every crime. Our police resources are allocated based on need, and so if no crime is reported, no resource is allocated. Any crime in progress, anything that looks decidedly off, anything where you can see or think someone is in danger, is always a 999 call. Report all other incidents by calling 101 (and expect a long

wait) or report online at https://www.sussex.police.uk/ reportcrime. Overall, there has been a significant drop in crime over the previous years. Much like Seaford Central, Seaford East is dominated by crimes where people behave badly – ASB, Public Order, and Violence topping the

children can play free-range, where our elders are respected and valued, where our youth are encouraged and praised. It sounds utopian, but it is honestly so simple even if all we give is a friendly smile. A visible and relevant Neighbourhood Watch also helps to keep crime at bay and we need do no more than display a roundel on our front doors to achieve this.

list. The ASB trend line is reducing though, once again underlining the effectiveness of our Policing model with visible, named, dedicated PCSOs allocated to each part of our town. You can see who our PCSOs are at https://www.sussex.police.uk/area/, pop in your postcode and click the On The Team tab. We can’t stress enough the critically important role we have as Seaford Great Neighbours because nobody knows the neighbourhood better than we who live here. Keeping an eye out for things that look iffy, reporting crime, caring about our neighbours who are more vulnerable or need a little help, all adds up to safe and happy neighbourhoods, a town where our

While every resident of Seaford and Bishopstone is automatically under the umbrella of what we do, our Association relies on membership to keep doing what we do. It costs £3 per household per year to be Association members, and £2 per household per year for retirees. Joining is so simple too – just head over to www.sandbnhw. org/join, choose the subscription that suits you and then follow the onscreen prompts. New members will get a member pack in the post and if you need fresh roundels, you can order these online in our little shop where everything is free except the postage. That’s it from us for this August edition. Remember your SMARTS as the days start drawing in to keep us a savvy Seaford filled with Great Neighbours. Be generous with your smiles and your kindness. Seaford Community Cinema’s autumn season at the Barn Theatre includes the best from most genres, taking in comedy, drama, thriller and foreign films, and sometimes all four in one. The programme opens with one from our Best of British category, The Duke (12), on Friday 2nd September at 7.30pm. This relates the true story of how Kempton Bunton (Jim Broadbent) stole Goya’s portrait of the Duke of Wellington from the National Gallery then sent ransom notes saying he would return it on condition the government invested more in care for the elderly. Also starring Helen Mirren. The following week it’s the BAFTA-nominated for Outstanding British Film and Best Actor (Adeel Aktar), Ali & Ava (15). These two are both fond of Sofia with whom they have different connections, and start a relationship that is affected by previous life problems.

MAD Music Hall Following last year’s extremely successful, Kick Ass Lockdown Show, MAD is pleased to announce that we are producing another Music Hall spectacular ‘To Infinity and Beyond as Far as the Fuel will Get Us’ This will be performed at Newhaven Fort on the August Bank Holiday weekend, 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th August. If you have attended one of our previous Music Halls you will know we have various themed sections, featuring a combination of songs and sketches, and this year is no different! For this extravaganza we will be taking you on a journey through Space; Amsterdam; Sports and the life of Beach Bums. See page 23.

On Thursday 3rd November at 7pm there’s an NTLive screening of comedy Jack Absolute Flies Again, then the following day there’s more laughter with Phantom of the Open (12A) which sees Mark Rylance playing Maurice Flitcroft in the real-life story of the worst golfer ever to play an Open (photo above). Operation Mincemeat (12), the World War II spy story loosely taken from Ben Macintyre’s book, plays out on 11th November, showing how two intelligence officers (Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen) make use of a corpse and false papers to outwit German troops. Put a French film and present-day fantasy into the past and you get the delightfully quirky and inventive La Belle Epoque (15), on 18th November. This is followed on 25rd November by mid-life crisis movie Everything Everywhere All At Once (15). Will a parallel reality afford an escape from a failing business, strained family relationships and a meeting with a grumpy auditor? This is a comic multiverse film like no other. December begins on the 2nd with Oscar- and BAFTAnominated film Licorice Pizza (15) about first love in 1973 and what happens when a boy of 15 falls for a 25-year-old photographer. For Christmas Magic Saturday on 3rd December kids and adults alike should be charmed by animation Encanto (PG). The season concludes on 9th December with Downton Abbey: A New Era (PG) in which we are transported not only to Highclere, but to a villa in France for a gourmet banquet of drama, romance and the full Downton experience courtesy of Hugh Bonneville, Jim Carter, Michelle Dockery, Allen Leach and Tuppence Middleton. Tickets from the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street, from seafordcinema.org or, if you are happy to risk a sell-out, on the door.

THE SEAFORD SILVER BAND The Seaford Silver Band was formed over 70 years ago. It now meets at Seaford Head Lower School every Wednesday evening between 8pm and 10pm, with a ‘tea-break’ marking half-time and providing an opportunity to socialise.

As you can see, this is a friendly, mixed-age group which welcomes new members who can read music and have, at the very least, some experience of playing a brass instrument. Instruments are available to borrow, and advice can be given as to the suitability of an instrument for the player, with ongoing help to allow for improvement. Music played is varied, as are the venues: open-air concerts, fêtes, church services, parties, as examples. The Band may be hired for a variety of occasions and details, with an enquiry form, can be found on the website. For further information, please visit the Band’s website: seafordsilverband.co.uk or phone: 07909 913077 for a friendly chat and, perhaps, to arrange to sit in on a rehearsal and see if you would like to join.

Is Bobbin Lacemaking a dying art? Not in Peacehaven! The local group, Meridian Lacemakers, recently won a coveted award for their entry into the national Lace Guild Competition. This triennial competition had the title ‘Commonwealth’, as the Commonwealth Games are in Birmingham, and the Lace Guild is based in the West Midlands. One of the categories for an entry piece is one made by a group of up to 10 people. Meridian Lacemakers, who meet monthly, entered a piece called ‘Going for Gold’. They were very pleased to win not only a medal of excellence, but also the overall trophy for this category. The trophy is a leather plate, known as the Northumbria Lacemakers’ Trophy, as that group donated it to the Lace Guild. The piece was designed by Pamela Layzell, and nine members of the group helped to make it, working narrow lengths of bobbin lace, which when hung together, form the image of a running figure. Each contributor receives a certificate, and most have ordered a specially-made lace bobbin with the details written on it as a keepsake. The entry is about to be taken to Portugal to become part of an exhibition there for a few weeks. 06/03/2022, 08:59 Page 1 of 1

So, rather than being a dying art in East Sussex, lacemaking is thriving! There are more groups in Sussex, and in fact there are groups in most major towns and cities. Regular lace days and fairs are run at various venues in lots of areas throughout the year, and there are wonderful craftsmen and women, who continue to make our envied equipment: wooden and bone bobbins, plain in different woods, or with sayings, memorable dates, or family occasions written on them; all our pins in lots of different sizes, pillows to work on, threads to work with and patterns to test our knowledge; not to mention all the bags, magnifiers, scissors, and the rest of the accoutrements that we need! Although there are no longer any lacemaking classes run by Adult Education in Sussex, Meridian Lacemakers would be delighted to help people learn this fascinating craft. It may on first sight seem complicated, but we can all testify that there are literally only two stitches you need to learn – it’s what you do with them that forms the many different patterns. We have beginners’ kits available that can be loaned out until such time as

you have your own items, and there can be regular help provided between our monthly meetings. One new lady took a video on her phone of the first stitch to learn so that she could refer to it at home! Do look out for us in the future, as we are hoping to be able to demonstrate our lacemaking abilities at several places in the coming months. We also enjoy doing needle-lace, tatting, crochet work and knitting, even cross stitch, so if anything appeals to you, please get in touch, and join us for a convivial day out among like-minded people. Phone Gail Ball (Chair) on 01323 730552 for more information. Photos: The Going for Gold entry; Pamela Layzell, designer of Going for Gold with the Northumbria Lacemaker’s Trophy.

Churches Count on Nature The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; The hills are clothed with gladness. The meadows are covered with flocks And the valleys are mantled with grain; They shout for joy and sing. Psalm 65 verse 12,13 In June St Leonard’s church participated in the nationwide campaign Churches Count on Nature organised by Christian charities A Rocha and Caring for God’s Acre. With the support of On the Verge and expertise from Seaford Natural History Society, we recorded a fascinating baseline of churchyard flora and fauna, which will be used to inform our management plan and be included in the National Biodiversity Database. Resident birds like Herring Gulls, Starlings, House Sparrows and Pied Wagtails are commonly seen.

Migratory Swifts were spotted high overhead, they overwinter in Southern Africa, flying an incredible 14,000 miles every year and need our help with finding a suitable home when they arrive. The plight and decline of pollinating insects is well documented, so it was gratifying to learn we are providing habitat for several species of bumblebee, hover fly and butterfly, including the Painted Lady all the way from North Africa. Remarkably a rare species of fly, Chrysosomopsis aurata, with only 10 confirmed sightings in the UK in the past 20 years, was also recorded, making us realize there is more biodiversity to cherish and protect than one would at first suspect. We are collaborating with the District Council and the hard working, understaffed contractors to develop a mowing plan that allows for accessibility, aesthetics and biodiversity, however scheduling and frequency of mowing remains unpredictable. The June cut created a mosaic of three kinds of grassland. Firstly, tightly mowed areas for lawns and a network of footpaths. Secondly, a light cut at the height of the memorial kerb stones to promote a second flowering of low-lying plants like Birdsfoot Trefoil, and finally a zone of long grass to be a haven for Meadow Browns, Gatekeepers and grasshoppers to breed. The Purple Knapweed growing in this area is excellent for bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies like the Common Blue and Large White. We will be identifying some of the key plants with cuttlefish bone markers, posting photos by the lych gate and adding to the sightings list on the porch noticeboard as we continue to monitor and record churchyard flora and fauna. Both for aesthetics and promoting flowering plants in subsequent years it is important to rake and remove grass clippings, however the District Council mowing contractors do not do this so the church relies on volunteers. Caring for God’s acre, our own gardens and indeed all Creation is a testament of reverence and respect as we all depend and count on Nature. Photo: Church grassland mosaic by Nichols Roofing.

Blooming Summer

We hope you are enjoying the height of summer, the scented blooms in the garden, and lazy days spotting butterflies and listening to the buzz of the bees. It’s definitely time for some summer picnics. Why not plan one in one of the local parks or other green spaces? When was the last time you got up really close to a ladybird (photo left), listened to the grasshoppers, or made a daisy chain in the grass? If you plan a beach picnic, why not head to Tidemills and look out for some of the colourful plants that thrive among the shingle? Look out for yellow-horned poppies (photo right), sea kale, biting stonecrop, viper’s bugloss, valerian, and the wildlife that visit them.

Buzzing about

We haven’t been letting the grass grow under our feet, but have been out talking to the community in all sorts of places, including school fêtes

Alfriston & Cuckmere Valley Twinning Association We had a wonderful visit to our twin village of Veulesles-Roses in July. Our hosts had organised activities based around the Linen Festival. We are always made very welcome, and it was particularly special to be back there for the first group visit in three years. and outside supermarkets. If you would like us to come to your event and talk to people about bringing nature back to Seaford, do get in touch. We were delighted to be invited to St Leonard’s churchyard and given the chance to talk to people about the inspiring project to bring bees, butterflies and other wildlife back to the churchyard, with mowing regimes that allow some of our most wonderful wild flowers to flourish. In June we met with Alice from Buglife and learnt more about insects and about improving habitats for them. Bees and other insects don’t just need flowers for pollen and nectar, but also nesting and hibernation spaces – for example some need holes in the ground, others need hollow tubes like hollow stems or cavities in trees. We plan to improve these habitats in some of the local green spaces, for example maybe putting in insect hotels. If you would like to help with this, do get in touch.

Weeding out the weedkiller

We must confess we love weeds. A weed is only a flower in the wrong place, and sometimes wild flowers pop up in the most unlikely spots. Spotted recently – a stunning evening primrose, towering out of a tiny crack in a residential street, tiny ivy-leaved toadflax clinging beautifully to many walls, poppies along street corners, tumbling black medick round the base of a sign to Eastbourne, and a stunning storksbill in the gravel at the old hotel above Splash Point. This is why so many of our members, and members of the public, have been so horrified that ESCC are continuing to spray road and pavement edges in order to clear these “weeds”. Some areas clearly do need to be clear of vegetation for public safety but at what price? OTV are concerned to learn that glyphosate is being used by ESCC. This is a chemical which scientists warn has potential to damage ecosystems by disrupting natural food chains and plant pollination. We have been talking to our local town and county councillors, who share our concerns, and are working to encourage ESCC to move away from this practice as soon as possible. Anyone who shares our concerns is requested to email customer@eastsussexhighways.com Hope to see you out and about soon. https://www.seafuture.org/on-the-verge/ ontheverge@seafuture.org

Why you need to act NOW if you want a new home for Christmas Yes, we did mention Christmas, but trust us, there’s a serious reason for it! Being in a new property in time for the festive season is often a key goal for home sellers and movers. Pre-pandemic, if you wanted to be settled in by December 25th, you’d need to get your home on the market in early September. This considered the average time a property took to sell and allowed for the legal process of selling and buying a home. But as reported widely last month in the national press, the post-pandemic delay in conveyancing (the legal side of the home selling process) means people must plan further ahead. According to the reports, an average of 133 days is now a typical time frame from an offer being accepted to a sale being completed. And that’s why we’re recommending that if you want to be in by Christmas, you’ll need to be on the market in July or early August.

Get Legal: Considering the delays home sellers

are experiencing, there’s never been a more important time to pick a good conveyancing solicitor. Go with recommendations, and remember, just like estate agents, cheap solicitors can be more expensive in the long run.

Seaford Museum

Come and visit our archives!

Tucked away in the depths of Seaford Museum lies the George Jakens Archive Room. Named after one of the Museum’s founder members – who had the foresight and dedication to set up the archive over fifty years ago – this room houses the museum’s fascinating collection of documents, photographs, newspaper cuttings, maps, and books, which together provide an invaluable resource for anyone interested in the history of Seaford. Many of the sections deal with particular aspects of Seaford’s history, such as its private schools; its people; its maritime and military past (including two world wars), and that favourite Seaford topic, the weather. One complete wall is occupied by the Housing Register, where the shelves are packed with over

town’s history – when an enemy bomb destroyed part of the terrace in 1942, killing five people. George Jakens died in 1994, but his legacy lives on in this wonderful archive, which continues to expand and flourish today. Archivist Gail Armstrong and her team of fellow volunteers are currently busy adding thousands of items to the computer database, while many of the documents have recently been transferred to hundreds of smart new files which line the walls of the Archive Room. Are you interested in researching the history of your house or street? Or perhaps you are curious to learn more about another aspect of Seaford history? Why not visit us on one of our monthly Open Archive afternoons, where our friendly volunteers will be pleased to assist you. First Sunday of every month 1.30pm to 4pm. Access to the archives is free but normal museum admission charges apply.

September DEADLINE:

Friday 5th August

250 files full of documents and photographs relating to Seaford’s streets and buildings, including 12 files dedicated to Broad Street and 7 to High Street. The housing files contain interesting publicity material produced by local estate agents and auctioneers. In the Pelham Road section, for instance, we find details of an 1888 auction offering properties belonging to the late Dr William Tyler Smith, including numbers 8 – 17 Pelham Place (now opposite Morrison’s). Dr Tyler Smith had arrived in the 1850s with ambitious plans to turn Seaford into a fashionable health resort, and photographs in our archive illustrate the imposing nature of this lofty terrace, built to accommodate visitors. SEAFORD AFTERNOON FLOWER CLUB We will be holding our AGM on Thursday 18th August. At this meeting we will be presenting cups and awards to our members. Following the AGM we will be having a demonstration entitled What Not to Do, where members will be shown deliberate mistakes in arrangements and how to rectify the situation. It will be a learning curve for us all. Our competition is entitled Summer Holiday, which should give us all the opportunity for our imagination to run riot. Seaford Horticultural Show will be holding their Horticultural Show on Saturday 6th August at Cradle Hill School. Our Club will be entering the InterClub competition and several of our members will be putting entries into the show. There is always a wonderful display and it is well worth a visit. At our meeting in June, Christine Campbell-Dykes from Hailsham Flower Club treated us to an entertaining demonstration of Anniversaries. Christine is a talented and inventive flower arranger, and we all enjoyed her beautiful creations. Our competition was entitled Roses are Red, as illustrated by the photographs (above right).

We meet at the Baptist Church Hall in Belgrave Road, Seaford, BN25 2EE on the third Thursday of each month (except January) at 1.30pm. Our fees for this year are £45 and visitors are always very welcome at £7.50 on the door which includes refreshments. Contact Mary Morris on 01323 893899 or Sue Ward on 01323 894848 for further details.

Looking ahead, at our meeting on 16th September, we will be holding a workshop where we will be making a pavé design. Pavé is the French word for a paved surface – originally referring to a cobblestone street. The original definition was a style where the plants are massed to form a purely horizontal pattern creating a cobblestone effect. We are sure that this will provide a very entertaining and interesting afternoon for all of us.

Summer heat, hydration and dementia… Typically, by the time you are reading this, those brief days of shorts and t-shirts; sun-cream and ice-cream may seem just a distant memory. I sincerely hope you’re not currently sheltering from thunderstorms or popping on a jumper but even if you are, now seems the best time to discuss how to take care of vulnerable individuals during heatwaves. Those (glorious) summer days where the temperature rises can have a serious impact on dementia sufferers, especially where they have lost access to the self-care mechanisms that the rest of us may take for granted. Where dementia impacts the memory, the normal automatic response to a brain message telling you you’re thirsty may be forgotten or set aside, leading to an increased risk of dehydration, discomfort and a deterioration in general wellbeing across a relatively short period of time. Once the thermometer climbs, at Clifden House we ensure that water and cool drinks are readily available throughout the day. Little sips taken regularly are more effective in maintaining hydration than attempting to coax individuals to drink large glasses all in one.

dehydration include headaches or dizziness and excessive tiredness. Equally, increased confusion beyond the normal indicators of dementia. Finally, has the individual been for a wee recently? If they haven’t needed to go, they may need to up their liquid intake. Access to outdoor spaces is one of the joys of the summer, but these should also allow access to shaded areas, sun umbrellas and summerhouses that offer safe and enjoyable time in the garden, but reduce the risk of sunburn, sunstroke and dehydration. Midday is not the best time to be outside. The cool of the morning, with that lovely feeling of the warmth to come, or the late afternoon, where there is a welcome cool breeze and the intense heat has gone out of the day, ensure exposure to the best of the sunshine but reduce the negative risks. Of course, you’re now finishing this article in your wellies, woollen socks and knitted mittens because you live in the UK and summer finished on Wednesday, but hopefully we can make the next time safer and more enjoyable for all of us.

Summer days are also the perfect time for ice lollies for both residents and their carers in the home, so we look for ways to provide high water content options such as fruit, jellies, ice-creams and even (cooled) soups to ensure that liquid is being ingested in a timely manner.

Clifden House Dementia Care Centre has been delivering exceptional residential and respite care for 50 years. It aims to maximise each individual’s potential through choice, reducing the use of unnecessary medication and alleviating the symptoms of dementia in a caring and supportive environment.

Whilst we audit food and fluids taken by our residents, in your own home it may be useful to set a timer to remind someone with dementia to take a drink or to move out of the heat of the sun into the shade. Typical signs that may indicate

East Sussex What’s On in August? Moviemakers A variety of films were viewed on the My Favourite Film evening. Members brought their choice, and it provided a very entertaining club evening. We watched a excerpt from The building of the Shard – an insight into a unique constructional design; from there we had an ‘out-of-season’ look at The Muppets Christmas Carol – a shock for Dickens aficionados. We were then transported by aerial shots of the Italian coastline and into the office of Inspector Montalbano. He was followed by familiar actresses preparing to be Calendar Girls. The concluding pair of films took us on a Summer Holiday with Cliff Richard, and a hop over the Atlantic to the Argentinian culture of Evita. The club programme for August will concentrate on what is entailed in the making of a short film and in the preparatory work required in putting the theory into practice by creating a ‘Studio Experience’ in early September. Details are on our website: www.eastsussexmoviemakers.com We are a small, and very friendly club, and will always welcome anyone with an interest in making or watching films made by keen amateur moviemakers. We manage to find time for a beverage and a biscuit; so, come and spend an evening with us at no initial cost except your time. Car parking is in the church grounds off Rattle Road, Stone Cross.
