Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art Scottsdale Public Art Scottsdale Arts Learning & Innovation Canal Convergence Civic Center LIVE With six major departments, 170+ staff members, 30+ trustees, 60+ advisors, hundreds of volunteers, thousands of students, and hundreds-of-thousands of participants each year, Scottsdale Arts is the largest and most comprehensive arts and culture nonprofit in Arizona. We are dedicated to providing access to great art experiences for all in our community. This year we want to introduce you to the entire Scottsdale Arts family, highlighting how we are your one stop for all things culture. And we want to introduce you to what makes our organization so special: when all of these pieces come together, we can serve our community so much more deeply. When arts education specialists collaborate with teaching artists and bring students to amazing performance matinees, every child becomes engaged in the magic of creativity! When our artistic directors curate bands and dance performances for Canal Convergence, when museum curators cultivate community through contemporary art, and when all come together for festivals or workshops, the experience for you, our patron, becomes so much richer.

We Are Scottsdale Arts! Dear Scottsdale Arts Patron, As you received this new Scottsdale Arts Guidebook in your mailbox, you might have been surprised by its heft and format. We are clearly doing something different this year! Scottsdale Arts is fortunate to represent the beating heart, the epicenter of arts and culture in Scottsdale. For years, many of you may have only known us through one of our departments: you may visit us for shows at the Center for the Performing Arts, enjoy exhibitions at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA), or come to our Sun & Sounds concert series on the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center. Perhaps you did not realize that we produce Canal Convergence, the spectacular annual public art event at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Or that all of the monumental public artworks across Scottsdale have been commissioned and installed by our Public Art department over the past 50 years! Or that your children have likely received art education in their schools because of the work our Learning & Innovation department provides.

Scottsdale Arts is a close, contracted partner to the City of Scottsdale, but we are our own 501(c)3 nonprofit here to serve you. We inhabit a beautiful campus at Scottsdale Civic Center with our own theaters, museum, new outdoor stages, and public art, all within a short stroll from restaurants, bars, hotels, shops, galleries, and arts venues. But we also work across the city with exhibitions, public art, lifelong learning, and kids’ activities at libraries and community centers in north and south Scottsdale. Our newest department, Civic Center LIVE, will fully come into its own this year—with two outdoor stages completed, and 80+ events and performances October through May under the desert sky. From famous American roots bands to multi-day arts festivals to yoga on the lawn and free family activities, we’re certain that you will find a reason to rediscover Scottsdale Civic Center. In this guidebook, we wanted to take the opportunity to introduce you to all of Scottsdale Arts. Throughout this year we will showcase the entire spectrum of this amazing organization. We’d like to invite you to take a little time and give us a closer look. We think you’ll agree that we represent the cultural and creative DNA of Scottsdale! Sincerely,

Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, President & CEO, Scottsdale Arts

Celebrating

50 Years of Public Art Laura Haddad and Tom Drugan, Water Mark. Photo: Scottsdale Arts

Since the earliest days of Scottsdale’s history, art and culture have been an essential part of Scottsdale’s identity. In the early 1900s, artists came to Scottsdale to create in the bright light of our desert atmosphere. In the early 1970s, community leaders knew they wanted a work of public art for the new Civic Center Plaza, designed by internationally recognized architect Bennie Gonzales. With a bold decision, they chose one of America’s foremost artists, Louise Nevelson to create a monumental work of public art for the citizens of Scottsdale. With matching funds from the National Endowment for the Arts, the commission was completed and dedicated on Nov. 11, 1973. On Thursday, Oct. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m., we will be celebrating the oldest and newest public art commissions this year, both commissioned for Scottsdale Civic Center. In conjunction with recognizing the 50th anniversary of Louise Nevelson’s Atmosphere and Environments XIII, (also known as Windows to the West), we will be commemorating our newest public artwork completed in June 2023 by Tammi Lynch-Forrest, The Desert’s Garden, located outside of Scottsdale City Hall, which is also celebrating 55 years.

Scottsdale is made better through public art. Citizens find pride in their city, and visitors are delighted while making memories during their travels. Scottsdale Public Art fully embodies, provides for, and encourages the idea that art is for everyone. Everyone benefits from the creativity of others, from their artistic vision that is made available for everyone to enjoy. We look forward to the next era of public art commissions to make Scottsdale the place where we all can live with art and love this place.

Civic Center LIVE Your home for outdoor experiences under the Southwest sky

At the corner of Brown and Main, in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, there’s a portal from the western-themed shops and trendy eateries to a world of artistic wonders. Simply take a few steps to the east and let the newly renovated Scottsdale Civic Center welcome you to an illuminating mix of historic landmarks, imaginative public art, notable architecture, and thrilling performance venues. The tree-lined West Paseo leads to an outdoor gathering space surrounded by Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, City Hall, and the Civic Center Library—all designed by legendary Arizona architect Bennie Gonzales. Along the way you’ll encounter George-Ann Tognoni’s The Yearlings, a graceful equine bronze, and the artist’s bronze memorial to Scottsdale founders Winfield and Helen Scott, just outside the Scottsdale Historical Museum. History of a different sort welcomes you into the full expanse of Scottsdale Civic Center in the contemporary abstract form of Louise Nevelson’s Windows to the West. Towering over the Nevelson and the nearby West Bowl amphitheater are massive shade trees, offering a respite from the afternoon sun as

music lovers gather around the 360 Stage for free Sun & Sounds concerts on Sundays in the springtime. When not hosting shows, the stage’s elegant shade structure provides a peaceful place to relax on colorful patio furniture. You’ll find a new version of the Marshall Gardens, a longtime destination for weddings and other celebratory gatherings, north of the 360 Stage. The updated gardens feature a vibrant artificial turf with purple concrete accents surrounding a picturesque fountain. East of the 360 Stage is the expansive Civic Lawn, a gathering place for elegant events like January’s automotive showcase, the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, or Scottsdale Arts’ annual springtime fundraiser, The ARTrageous Gala. With the iconic LOVE sculpture by Robert Indiana in the background, the Civic Lawn is also popular for quinceañera photos and marriage proposals. Nearby, a sculpture of Mayor Herb Drinkwater looks out over the Civic Lawn while the busy boulevard named for the former city leader runs through a tunnel below, the location for a

new artwork in progress by Barbara Grygutis. Other longtime Civic Center artworks can still be found surrounding City Hall, alongside Tammi Lynch-Forrest’s new colorful mosaic The Desert’s Garden. Another blast of color is located outside the Civic Center Library’s children’s section where the Children’s Garden, complete with a splash pad and playground area, is tinted with cool blues. Your last stop is the Civic Center’s larger amphitheater, the East Bowl, a new concert venue designed to host nationally and internationally touring acts through our series of Civic Center LIVE events, kicking off here in October with the alt-country band Wilco, followed by the debut of the eclectic Dreamy Draw Music Festival and a visit from the Latin-inspired Americana act The Mavericks, both in November. So, grab a blanket or low-rise lawn chair, get your concert tickets, and join us for some excellent tunes under those dreamy desert skies this season at Scottsdale Civic Center!

“Before today, I dreaded improv and I always just defaulted to choreograph strictly to a specific guideline. Creating things on the spot is nerving as I always strive for them to be perfect. After today, I was able to open up and be vulnerable, tap into this whole new side of creating. This class was amazing. I thought it was going to be very technical but I am glad it wasn’t. I was able to push my choreographic limits and even connect with someone new!” –Student in the Cultural Connections Dance program

SMoCA 25 Years For nearly 25 years, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) has been at the forefront of its field, showcasing the very best artists and thinkers of our time through exhibitions, publications, and events. Designed by award-winning architect Will Bruder, the Museum features a Skyspace by Arizona-based artist James Turrell, one of the most significant artists of his generation. As an artist and audience centered institution, SMoCA brings communities together under the shared philosophy that art has the power to engage our imaginations, challenge our perceptions, and inspire change. The Museum works with emerging and established artists from around the world and from our own community to support new commissions and encourage dialogue about the art of today. The result is a lively community space that is a laboratory for creative thinking and new ideas. By embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility as organizational values, SMoCA and creatives across platforms promote cross-cultural dialogue and foster mutual understanding and respect. This fall, join the Museum for exhibitions featuring an immersive, lightbased installation by Phillip K. Smith III, alongside a traveling landmark exhibition of work by Christina Fernandez, the Los Angeles-based artist who has spent 30 years in a rich exploration of migration, labor, gender, her Mexican American identity, and the unique capacities of the photographic medium itself. Also on view is the world premiere of Dutch artist Roelof Knol’s immersive installation, the space in between, which
