We are on the unceded, sacred land of the O’odham and Piipaash Peoples and their Huhugam and Piipaash Nykor ancestors. We acknowledge and celebrate the

past and present, and generations to come. They are the original stewards of this land, and we are humbled

peoples connected to this land that has sustained their people for centuries. They are an important part of our

members. As an arts and culture organization, it is our duty to uplift the artists and activists doing this work.

We Are Scottsdale Arts! Dear Scottsdale Arts Patron, Welcome to the Scottsdale Arts Spring Guide—all things Scottsdale Arts in one, colorful book. I hope you enjoyed our fresh format in the fall version of this magazine. This new edition includes fabulous added shows, as well as updates and highlights of such important events as Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s 25th Birthday Celebration! This has been an extraordinary year for Scottsdale Arts. From the opening of our new outdoor campus to new festivals and a record-breaking Canal Convergence, we have been able to bring so many new patrons and participants to the arts! Major gifts, a highly successful season, and—most importantly—your support have made us one of the most thriving arts nonprofits in the nation.

I am very proud to call Scottsdale home. It is a wonderful community and a beautiful place to be. And I feel privileged to work for this amazing organization. Our family here at Scottsdale Arts is the most professional, inspiring, and hard-working team you can imagine. Next time you’re visiting an exhibition, attending a concert, or pausing in front of a large public art piece, please think of the hard work and dedication that went into producing such wonderful arts experiences. We could not be here without your support, and we hope to continue to earn your trust and patronage. Thank you for being a part of this and for giving our work purpose. Without an audience, we would not be as inspired as we are. Bringing artists and community together is our life’s work and we love to share it with you. Here’s to a wonderful spring season—and much more to come!

Sincerely,

Dr. Gerd Wuestemann, President & CEO, Scottsdale Arts

Springtime

at Scottsdale Arts Whether you’re a museum nerd, you’re a theatre person, or you love finding a cool park for a stroll with your pup, Scottdale Arts’ campus and events have a subtle magnetism that can be hard to ignore. In the spring, Scottsdale Arts performances come alive in a variety of venues, both indoors and outdoors, but the shiny new gem of a venue, Scottsdale Civic Center, is taking the spotlight. It’s the place to be for concerts and community events. Two mustsee series to put on the calendar (amongst the many) are the free concerts-in-the-park series Sun & Sounds (Sundays in March) and the newly announced Golden Hour | Spring Concert Series. Sun & Sounds events are for relaxing in the park with your friends and having a good time. The best part is it’s free, thanks to the support of generous community sponsors! Each of the four afternoon concerts features two Arizona bands, so it’s a great way to check out the thriving local music scene. Sun & Sounds’ creatively curated lineup for 2024 includes country, folk, indie, pop, rock, and blues bands from names you know to some you’ll be happy you discovered. The weekends fly by, so be sure to catch one or all four! Golden Hour is a new concert series with a concept focused on sonic explorations of Southwestern sounds and delighting in desert evenings as twilight fades to darkness. It’s an alternative to the club concert, pairing incredible weather with provocative and boundary-pushing music. Golden Hour concerts will be held at the West Bowl stage and early bird ticket discounts will be offered.

Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) is an accredited and internationally recognized institution that encourages reflections and conversations about life through art. We aspire to produce and mediate creative expressions that lead to connected curiosity and shared meaning across a wide range of publics. Locally voted Best Art Museum in 2023, plan a visit to SMoCA to see what’s new. On Friday, Feb. 9, SMoCA celebrates its 25th birthday with an all-out bash! All are invited to join us for an evening of art, performance, conversation, music, and activities with creatives from around the Valley. On view are exhibitions that highlight a range of contemporary art. Amsterdam-based artist Roelof Knol’s immersive audio-visual experience continues, and we launch an exciting exhibition of new large-scale installation works by San Francisco-based, Bolivian-born artist Carolina Aranibar-Fernández.

Years of Contemporary Art in Scottsdale

Also opening is Dorothy Fratt: Color Mirage, the first major retrospective of work by American painter Dorothy Fratt (1923–2017). Spanning more than five decades of the artist’s career, the exhibition presents a selection of early works alongside paintings that exemplify Fratt’s vibrant and singular style of abstraction. Accompanying the exhibition is the artist’s first monograph, co-published by Radius Books, featuring essays and a conversation with contemporary artists Teresa Baker, Caroline Kent, and Rebecca Ward. Further afield, we are so proud that Arizona-based artist Saskia Jordá is representing Arizona at the National Museum of Women in the Arts New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024 exhibition in April with a work first seen in SMoCA's 2019 exhibition Counter-Landscapes: Performative Actions from the 1970s – Now. SMoCA’s impact can be seen locally and beyond. As we reflect on all that we have accomplished, we extend our heartfelt thanks to our supporters and the community for all their contributions—we would not shine as brightly without you and look forward to the next 25 years!

In the months between, the entire Civic Center opened to the public, including the new East Bowl amphitheater, where Wilco and The Mavericks both played to ecstatic crowds. In early November, Scottsdale Arts coproduced the inaugural Dreamy Draw Music Festival, utilizing all three stages to host Lord Huron, Midland, Margo Price, Luke Grimes, and Trampled by Turtles, among many others. Sprinkled among Scottsdale Arts events, the Civic Center has also hosted numerous rental events, including the massive lululemon 10K Tour and the Discover India Festival, alongside regular city-sponsored entertainment.

The fun continues this spring with many more productions, including a free concert in celebration of Navy Week by the Navy Band Southwest's 32nd Street Brass Band. Sun & Sounds returns with local music, artist vendors, and cold drinks from the bar, all in a laid-back, family-friendly, and pet-friendly atmosphere. While Sun & Sounds has the afternoons covered, the new Golden Hour concerts will bring a similar vibe to the evenings. Formerly known as Live & Local, Golden Hour will showcase the best local and regional music under the stars. Be sure to mark April 6 on your calendars for The ARTrageous Gala. This annual fundraiser for Scottsdale Arts made a special kind of magic in 2023 when it bloomed around the Civic Center’s 360 Stage. With its Cosmic Crescendo theme this year, the gala will transform the outdoor space into a solar wonderland of shimmering starlight, lunar accents, and celestial splendor with dance, music, and an eclipse-inspired menu.

Two Spectacular Public Art Projects Set to Transform Scottsdale Streets in Spring 2024 Scottsdale is expanding its dynamic tapestry of public art this spring with two new projects, spearheaded by internationally acclaimed artists Barbara Grygutis and Philip K. Smith III. These installations, Breakaway and Tri/ Hex/Circ, are poised to transform ordinary streetscape settings into immersive, thoughtprovoking experiences. Barbara Grygutis’ Breakaway is meant to reference the continuum from the historic western roots of the city to a contemporary vision of a city firmly rooted in moving into the future. Nestled beneath Scottsdale Civic Center, along the walls of the Drinkwater Underpass, Breakaway will transform the space with a monumental, cast-aluminum rope sculpture with complicated knots, painted walls, and lighting. Grygutis, known for large-scale sculptures that engage with the surrounding environment, aims to create a harmonious integration of art and infrastructure. Drinkwater Underpass will serve as a testament to the transformative power of public art, turning a neglected space into a captivating experience that reflects the art taking place overhead.

Philip K. Smith III, celebrated for innovative light-based installations, introduces Tri/Hex/ Circ, a project that will redefine the streetscape at the roundabout intersection of Raintree Drive and Hayden Road. Twisting 90 degrees and transforming geometrically from a triangle at the top to a hexagon to a circle at the base, the light-and-shadow surface of Tri/Hex/ Circ dynamically changes as the sun moves from east to west. Composed of 36 unique shapes, cut at 30 degrees, the ever-increasing gap between each shape invites the sky itself to become an integral element within the sculpture. Smith’s work often blurs the lines between art, architecture, and the natural world, and Tri/Hex/Circ promises to be a testament to his ability to evoke emotions through the interplay of light and public space. As we eagerly await the unveiling of Breakaway and Tri/Hex/Circ in 2024, these public art installations stand poised to redefine pieces of the urban landscape, inviting us to see our surroundings in a new and inspiring light.

Transforming Learning Through the Arts

Scottsdale Arts is more than just performances and exhibitions. The Learning & Innovation department also brings artsintegrated programs to classrooms across the city. Arts integration is an approach to teaching where students demonstrate understanding through an art form such as movement, music, or visual art to another subject matter, such as math, science, social studies, or language arts. Among these arts integration programs is an in-classroom residency called Composer in the Classroom. Offered for grades 3–10, Composer in the Classroom explores the intersection of literacy and music, empowering students to tell stories through sound. Scottsdale Arts contracts with professional artists to take this program to local students. Dian D’Avanzo, assistant concertmaster and violinist at The Phoenix Symphony, is one of those artists. D’Avanzo spends the first day of the residency exploring the differences between sound and music, challenging students with things like the theatrical show STOMP, which uses unconventional methods of creating percussive music, to Beethoven. “They eventually come up with: ‘music is organized sound,’” she says. Next, with D’Avanzo playing pieces for the students on her violin, they explore how a composer turns sound into music using things like melody, harmony, rhythm, and tempo. “At the end, they get them to come up and read their story, and I’m basically the soundtrack to their story,” D’Avanzo says. After the students compose the music with D’Avanzo’s help, they perform it together for their classmates. Alison Bunde, a former 4th grade teacher at Hopi Elementary School who had the program in her classroom, said many students are unsure about whether they will be able to compose anything. “By the end of the week, they are confident in performing the composed piece in front of their peers,” Bunde says. “This happens because they are learning so much and so well with Dian.” Among D’Avanzo’s most rewarding experiences was a conversation with a student who speaks English as a second language. He told her that he struggles to communicate through words, but the program had taught him there are other ways to communicate. “I love that I’m able to communicate through music,” he told her, adding that he had even made new friends through the composition project.

“ Having programs such as this is a resource that cannot be measured. Students are exposed to literature they would normally not read, discussions at a deeper level, and different viewpoints, as well as gaining such insight into WWII.
