COACH OF THE YEAR WADE WILSON TEXAS LUTHERAN

Wilson led the Bulldogs to a dominant debut in the program’s inaugural season in the SCAC. Texas Lutheran has won 21 of its 22 conference games (29-7 overall) and outscored its SCAC opponents 194-29 while batting .393 as a team and notching a 1.34 ERA in conference competition. The team’s .955 conference winning percentage is the highest since the DePauw University team went 14-0 in the SCAC East in 2009. In his three years at the helm of the Bulldog program and heading into this weekend’s conference tournament, Wilson has amassed an 81-36 overall record, which includes a 33-10 overall mark (22-2 in the American Southwest Conference) last season when Texas Lutheran garnered its first West Division title. This is the second consecutive conference Coach-of-the-Year honor for Wilson as he was honored as ASC Coach-of-the-Year last season. Wilson garnered four votes from his peers for SCAC Coach-of-the-Year, while Beth Krysiak of the University of Dallas, Jessica Peterka of Schreiner University and Brandi Crnkovic of Trinity University received one vote each.

ASHLEY

JACOBSEN

OFFENSIVE PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR Ashley Jacobsen of Texas Lutheran University, a junior second baseman from Marion, Texas, led the SCAC during the regular season with a .489 batting average and also leads the league in on-base percentage (.496), slugging percentage (.664), hits (64), runs scored (39), triples (3) and stolen bases (17). She is third in the league with 11 doubles. Her 64 hits are already the fourth-most in a SCAC single season and her current batting average puts her on pace for the fifthbest season in that category in league history. An ASC All-West Division First Team selection last season, Jacobsen stole 42 bases and scored 59 runs – both school records – as a sophomore. Jacobsen received six votes in the SCAC Player-of-the-Year balloting, while junior catcher Caitlynn Dykes, the 2012 SCAC Player-of-the-Year, received the remaining first-place vote.

TAYLOR

GRISSOM

PITCHER OF-THE-YEAR

KATIE

CASTILLON NEWCOMER OF-THE-YEAR

Taylor Grissom of Texas Lutheran University, a sophomore right-hander from Spring, Texas, leads the SCAC with a 1.07 ERA, and has compiled a 7-2 record with four shutouts in five complete games, which included a perfect game with a career-high seven strikeouts on March 10 against Austin College. It was just the fifth perfect game in program history. In 58.2 innings of work, Grissom has struck out 35 batters with only 11 walks while holding opponents to a .230 batting average (fourth in the SCAC).

Katie Castillon of Trinity University, a sophomore right-hander from San Antonio, Texas, went 11-8 during the 2014 regular season (second in wins in the SCAC) with a 2.97 ERA (seventh in the SCAC). She struck out 86 (fourth in the SCAC) in 115.2 innings of work (seventh in the SCAC) while allowing opposing batters to hit .287. Castillon led the SCAC with 16 complete games. She is the second Trinity player to earn Newcomer-of-the-Year honors, following current teammate Caitlynn Dykes, who won the award in 2012.

In a tightly contested vote, Grissom received four votes for SCAC Pitcherof-the-Year, while sophomore righthander Kaci Wellik of Trinity received the remaining three votes.

In the balloting for SCAC Newcomerof-the-Year, Castillon received four votes while sophomore outfielder Jacquelyn Brown of Texas Lutheran received two votes and freshman pitcher Victoria Herrera of Austin College received one vote.

KANGAROOS 2015 SEASON PREVIEW

24

Heading into the 2015 campaign, the Austin College softball team will be looking to build on a year that saw them establish a new program record with 18 victories under head coach Andrea Vangoss. This season as Vangoss enters her third year at the helm, the ‘Roos boast the largest roster in the team’s nine year history and return numerous key members of the team that went 18-24 overall and 8-16 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Leading the charge for Austin College will be the Hernandez twins, Sophia and Briana, along with fellow junior Mary Whitworth. Last season both Sophia and Briana Hernandez earned All-SCAC honors, while Whitworth set career highs across the board offensively. Sophia Hernandez matched the program record with nine victories on the mound, and threw the first perfect game in Kangaroo history. In that game against Rust College, she also set a new program record with 14 strikeouts and finished the year with 68 K’s. She was also one of the team’s most dangerous hitters at the plate, batting .304 and led the team with five home runs and 29 runs batted in, while also smacking seven doubles and three triples. Briana Hernandez finished second on the team with a .336 batting average and had seven doubles, a triple, four homers, and 28 runs batted in while serving as the battery-mate for her twin sister. Whitworth started throughout the season at first base last year and collected 25 hits, including career-highs with nine doubles and the first four home runs of her career. She also drove in 17 runs while scoring 17 more. Also back this season is sophomore Victoria Herrera, who quickly established herself as one of the most dominant power pitchers in the conference last season. Herrera set a school record and led the SCAC with 115 strikeouts while matching Hernandez for the team lead with nine victories on the mound. Herrera was an All-SCAC selection for her strong performance.

Emily Low is another sophomore who earned All-Conference honors in her first year at Austin College, as the outfielder batted.306 with four doubles, a home run, and 18 runs batted in. Hailey Clendennen was on her way to an All-Conference type season before seeing it come to an early end due to injury, but in 13 appearances prior to the season ender she was batting .432 with nine doubles, two home runs, and 14 runs batted in and will be back in the lineup to give the ‘Roos even more pop at the plate this year. CRUSADERS 2015 SEASON PREVIEW

36

The University of Dallas softball team is excited to begin the 2014-15 campaign under second-year head coach, Beth Krysiak, who returns 10 players from last year’s squad that improved by six wins. Still not satisfied with a 12-29 record and 7-15 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), Krysiak believes there will be a competitive environment among the Lady Crusaders. “As a team, we will be strong at the plate this year,” Coach Krysiak stated. “A lot of girls put in some hard work this summer and fall to improve their swings and it is showing. Additionally with some new freshmen, we are going to be able to swing the bat well this year.” Eight newcomers will suit up for UD this upcoming season. A pair of seniors get the special opportunity of helping witness a young group of athletes gel and bond with each other. Forming this duo are Ashley Pickert (Lenexa, Kan.) and Taylor Garcia (Pflugerville, Texas). Pickert played and started in 39 contests for UD the previous season, showing durability by ranking third on the team in appearances on the field. She clinched career offensive numbers with a .262 average, 12 RBI, and 37 total bases. Pickert is also one of the Lady Crusasders’ team captains. Garcia compiled big numbers offensively for Dallas, slugging a team-high .607 clip. She ranked third last season batting .328 with a career-high four home runs to finish second for the Navy and White. Coach Krysiak analyzed, “Taylor Garcia is going to be big for us as a senior catcher this year. She has had a great career here and has worked hard to make her senior year the best one yet.” Above Garcia in the top two spots that reflected the highest batting averages are sophomore Lyda Tesauro (Hollywood, Fla.) and junior Erin Begle (Houston, Texas). Tesauro was the only player to crack the .400 mark and created havoc on the base paths with her speed. She totaled a trio of three-baggers to lead the way and managed the highest amount of stolen bases with 18 - tying a league-most. Finishing second for the Lady Crusaders in average was Begle at .342 and tied for second with 38 base knocks. The middle infielder started all 35 games she stepped on the diamond, and compiled team-highs with 12 doubles, 23 RBI, and 58 total bases. “Erin Begle has been so athletic for us and stepped into the shortstop role last year,” reflected Krysiak. “She is excited to lead

this team to a great season.” Rounding out the quartet of hitters eclipsing the .300 batting mark, is sophomore Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.). The left-handed batter mustered a .317 clip through 36 starts, which matched appearances for the outfielder. She was another speed demon that scampered for 17 steals. “Avery Finch’s leadership and speed in the outfield is going to be big for us this year as well,” Krysiak praised. “She is one of the hardest working kids on the field day in and day out and pushes everyone around her to do the same.” Mustering the most power for the squad from Irving, Texas, was sophomore Alexandra Compte (Houston, Texas) leading the league and team with six home runs. The feat was the most a Lady Crusader has accomplished since their inaugural campaign in the SCAC four years ago. In the field, Dallas brings back another sophomore in Katherine Lee (Houston, Texas), who was the team’s best pitching performer. The righty threw in 26 contests last year, making 19 starts. Of those, Lee tossed 17 complete games with three via shutout. Freshmen duo Elizabeth Symanski (Wilmington, Vt.) and Alyssa Anderson (Snohomish, Wash.) should also see time in the circle for Dallas. Despite finishing in sixth place, and one game behind Austin College; this current “team has a very focused vision this year,” Head Coach Krysiak exclaimed. “Our goal is to be top in the SCAC,” At the helm for her second campaign, the Head Coach knows what needs to happen to give UD a chance to continue building on its first double figure number of wins in a season since 2010. She inputs, “In order for us to be successful we will need to simply remember who we are. We are a program with a lot of energy and a lot of love for the game. As long as we go into every game and play hard we will have a great year.” • The Crusaders will return 10 Dallas begins opening players from the 2014 team day at Sul Ross State University on January 31. • In 2014, the team increased to 12 wins, up six from the Courtesy of University of 2013 campaign and the team’s Dallas Sports Information first double-digit win season since 2010

QUICK NOTES

MOUNTAINEERS 2015 PLAYERS TO WATCH DANEECE STEWART

FR., INF, JUNCTION, TEXAS Stewart, a freshman third baseman, is looking to start at third base this year for the Mountaineers. She coming from a successful high school career at Junction High School, where she was a regular on All-District teams and was a member of the All West Texas team. Coach Meyer is excited about Daneece’s future and says she is great reflection the youthful talent Schreiner currently has.

38

SAMANTHA HERNANDEZ SO., OF, ATASCOSA, TEXAS

Hernandez, a sophomore outfielder, will look to return to the outfield for the Mountaineers where she hit .237 as a freshman last year. Coach Meyer believes the speedy outfielder, will improve offensively, and likes how she can slap for power and placement. On defense, she does well reading balls off the bat and tracking down flyballs.

New Head Coach Amy Meyer and the Schreiner Mountaineer Softball team have an optimistic outlook on the 2015 season. With a smooth coaching transition in the fall, Coach Meyer is excited about her team’s work ethic, selflessness and their focus on team. Despite the youthful roster, the Mountaineers are learning quickly to Coach Meyer’s style. On the mound for the Mountaineers will start the season with three solid pitchers in the stable. Coach Meyer believes each pitcher will bring a different, but important aspect to the circle. Returner Dominque Sandoval (Somerset, TX) will bring much important experience to the staff. While freshmen Lorena Espinoza (Los Fresnos, TX) has a mixed bag full of pitches and Jessica Vran brings a plus fastball. Behind the plate, returner Sarah Worrell (Helotes, TX) and freshman Sydney Christopher (Carlsbad, NM) will share catching duties this spring. Worrell was a solid defensive catcher for the Mountaineers despite and will look to improve her numbers at the plate. Junior Holly Molenaar (Manchaca, TX) returns, and again

will be looking for time at the corners this season, while Daneece Stewart (San Angelo, TX), who had a solid fall for the Mountaineers, is looking to break into the lineup at third base. Along with Molenaar, Kelsey Schwind (Blanco, TX) and Samantha Cordon (Edinburg, TX) will be competing for time at first base. In the middle for the Mountaineers, Coach Meyer is looking at Dominque Sandoval and Koral Riggs (Boerne, TX) at shortstop and Nichole Schoenherr (New Braunfels, TX) and Marlena Cisneros (Corpus Christi, TX) at second base. In the outfield for the Mountaineers, Brianna Rodriguez (Riverside, CA) and Sammy Scudder (San Antonio, TX) will compete for the centerfield spot. In leftfield, Lana Lawrence (Hankamer, TX) and Samantha Hernandez (Atascosa, TX) will battle it out. While in right, Coach Meyer is expecting write in either Lawrence, Reanna Garces (Edinburg, TX), or Brianne Gonzalez (Orange, CA). The Mountaineers will open up on March 4th with a doubleheader vs. Calumet (VT) at Mountaineer Field. Courtesy of Schreiner University Sports Information

BULLDOGS 2015 SEASON PREVIEW

54

The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs have their sights set on a repeat Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and a return trip to the NCAA Division III Championship. The Bulldogs rolled through SCAC competition a year ago, piling up a 21-2 conference record to go with a 33-9 overall mark. The Bulldogs cruised through the SCAC Championship Tournament, played at TLU’s new Kruse Stadium at Morck Field, and upset No. 3-ranked University of Texas at Tyler – in Tyler – in the opening game of the NCAA DIII regional pod. TLU, playing in the SCAC for the first time as a softball member, claimed the league’s conference title and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs of 2014 made the university’s first-ever trip to the NCAA softball post-season. The SCAC crown was the first conference softball title in TLU history. The Bulldogs return seven of nine position starters and all five pitchers that combined to produce 33 wins in 2014. Given all the players returning and the success of last season, the Bulldogs and fourth-year Head Coach Wade Wilson know that repeating the success of 2014 won’t be easy. “We’ll definitely have a bigger target on us from what we did last year,” said Wilson. “Expectations are high. Any time you return as many starters and returners that we have, and we had a great year last year, you expect to do the same.” “We have to stay together as a team. We did so many

things well as a team last year. We pitched well, hit well and played great defense. If we take care of those things, and stay focused, we’ll have a great year.” The Bulldogs return SCAC Player of the Year Ashley Jacobsen (second base) and SCAC Pitcher of the Year Taylor Grissom and six players that earned SCAC First Team honors. In addition to First Team honors for Jacobsen (now a senior) and Grissom (now a junior), returning Bulldogs on the SCAC First Team last year were first baseman Taylor Yancey (now a junior), shortstop Grace Estes (now a junior), third baseman Heather Hummel (now a junior) and outfielder Jacquelyn Brown (now a junior). The Bulldogs return the bulk of a lineup that set new school records for runs (290), hits (417), RBI (232), doubles (71), home runs (20) and batting average (.350). TLU also tied the school record for most wins in a season, 33. Returning Second Team and Honorable Mention players for TLU include: now seniors Hope Estes (catcher) and Kimberly Leschber (pitcher). Relief pitcher Samantha Yenne, now a sophomore, claimed Honorable Mention honors. The Bulldogs out-scored SCAC opponents 194-29 last season and out-scored all opponents 290-98. TLU won the SCAC team triple crown in 2014. The Bulldogs led the conference in batting (.350), pitching (2.42 ERA), and fielding (.972). Courtesy of Texas Lutheran University Sports Information

TIGERS 2015 KEY RETURNERS CAITLYNN DYKES

SR., C, PORT NECHES, TEXAS

56

Dykes, a senior catcher, is back for her senior season with the Tigers in 2015, after having led the team with 31 RBI and 47 hits last year. Dykes was the 2012 SCAC Newcomer of the Year and the 2012 SCAC Player of the Year as a first-year. After an injury shortened her sophomore season, Dykes was back in form in 2014, hitting .367 with seven doubles, four triples, and a pair of home runs. She has already broken Trinity’s career home runs record, and is poised to make a run at both the batting average and RBI career records as well.

EMILY FLEISCHMAN

JR., OF, BELLEVUE, WASH. Fleischman, a junior outfielder, will return to the Tigers for her this season. After 2013 SCAC Player of the Year Brooke Sanchez was lost for the 2014 season due to injury, it was Fleischman who took over the leadoff spot in the order. She responded with a career-high .374 batting average, leading the team in hits (52), runs (37), and stolen bases (13). Fleischman is a three-year starter in the outfield for Trinity.

KACI WELLIK

JR., P/OF, AUSTIN, TEXAS Wellik, a junior pitcher/outfielder, is back for another season as a dual threat for the Tiger softball team. When Wellik is not pitching for the Tigers, she is almost always still in the lineup offensively. TIGERS 2015 SEASON PREVIEW

60

Nine starters will lead the Trinity softball team as the Tigers open their 2015 season February 7 by hosting Hardin-Simmons University in a doubleheader. Third-year Head Coach Brandi Crnkovic guided Trinity to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship game last season, and to a 25-18 overall record (18-6 in the SCAC). The Tigers lost 3-0 to host Texas Lutheran University in the conference championship tilt played in Seguin, Texas. It marked Trinity’s fourth consecutive appearance in the SCAC final. “We will be energetic, play hard, and will give everything we’ve got, every day,” Coach Crnkovic said. “It’s beneficial for us to have those returners. They have all been to the championship game, and they know it is not enough to get us where we want to be. We are working harder, and will hopefully have the drive to take us to the postseason.” And Coach Crnkovic will have the services of some talented players to help the Tigers achieve their goal! Senior catcher Caitlynn Dykes was elected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III All-West Region Third Team. Dykes, also selected for the All-SCAC First Team, hit two home runs during the season and became Trinity’s all-time leader with 11 round-trippers to her credit. She is also the Tigers leading career batter, with a .383 average. Dykes batted .367, and led the team in RBI (31) and triples (four) during the 2014 campaign. In addition, Dykes was named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team. Joining Dykes on the All-SCAC First Team were sophomore third baseman Sarah Paller, junior outfielder Emily Fleischman, and junior pitcher/outfielder Kaci Wellik. Paller was the Tigers top hitter, going .392 at the plate. She scored 20 runs, smacked 23 RBI, swatted seven doubles, and hit three home runs. Paller also was a SCAC All-Tournament recipient. Fleischman batted .374, with a team-best 37 runs, along with six RBI and two doubles, and two triples. The speedster stole 13 bases during the season, on 15 attempts. Additionally, Fleischman was ranked No. 2 in the NCAA Division III, in the category of toughest to strike out. Fleischman had 139 at-bats, and was struck out only once. Dykes held a No. 34 ranking in the category, with 128 at-bats and just three strikeouts. Wellik went 13-9 on the pitcher’s mound, with a 2.57 ERA. She made 22 appearances, and worked 133.2 innings. Wellik also fanned 103 of the Tigers opponents. At the plate, Wellik hit .257, while getting 11 RBI and three doubles. Elected to the All-SCAC Second Team were junior pitcher Katie Castillon, sophomore second baseman/outfielder Hilary Hoffman, sophomore outfielder Mackenzie Hill, and senior outfielder Lauren Mercado. Castillon, who transferred to Trinity prior to last season, was chosen as the SCAC Newcomer of the Year. She posted a 12-9 record, and a 2.90 ERA. Castillon hurled 130.1 innings in 24 appearances, and struck out 94 batters.

The Tiger pitchers registered a 2.91 ERA, while opponents had a 3.76. Defensively, Trinity was ranked No. 38 in fielding percentage, with a mark of .965. “Our pitching staff is one of the top in the conference,” Coach Crnkovic said. “This year, we are excited to have a little more diversity on the mound. Defensively, we look really strong.” Hoffman hit .330, scored 19 runs, drove in 18 runs, and swatted six doubles and a triple. Hill went .297 in the batter’s box, with 10 runs, 16 RBI and eight doubles. The veteran Mercado led the Tigers in doubles, with 12, and batted .282. Mercado also drove in 23 runs, scored 22 of them, and registered a home run. Senior catcher Brittany Haby and sophomore pitcher/first baseman Katie Glomb were named to the All-SCAC Honorable Mention Team. Haby hit .272, scoring 18 runs, picking up 18 RBI, and smacking four doubles and a home run. Glomb, who will have increased pitching duties this season, struck out five players over 10.1 innings last season. She also had seven RBI and scored three runs as a batter. A solid returnee is junior first baseman Ariel Wilks. The Tigers batted .318 as a team, and the opposition hit .268. Trinity averaged 4.7 runs per game, and opponents scored 3.2 per match-up. Five first-year players are now Trinity Tigers. Three to watch include second baseman/shortstop Sabrina Nieto, outfielder Sara McCarty, and second baseman/third baseman Rebecca Berreth. Adding to the depth of the Tigers will be utility player Haleigh Garza, and catcher/ outfielder Sydney Kuhn. “This season, we have some freshmen who have big sticks,” Coach Crnkovic added. “We are going to work more of a ball-and-play offense, as opposed to swinging for the fence.” Two starters were lost to graduation, infielders Chrissy Armstrong and Brooke Sanchez. Armstrong became the national champion in sacrifice hits (25) for the second straight year, as well as making the All-SCAC Second Team. Sanchez became an All-SCAC honoree for the fourth time in her career. The Tigers will host 24 games this season, including the opener February 7 with Hardin-Simmons. Twelve of the home games will be against SCAC opponents: the University of Dallas (March 7-8), Texas Lutheran (March 27-28), and Centenary College (April 11-12). The double-elimination SCAC Championship is • The Tigers return nine slated for April 24-26 at Schstarters to the 2015 squad reiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
