about the cover Throughout the 2015-16 academic year, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a co-educational NCAA Division III athletics conference. The conference’s origins date to 1962 when the College Athletic Conference (CAC) was formed to provide an association through which member institutions could compete in intercollegiate sports activities among teams representative of their respective student bodies. A primary tenet of this conference was a shared commitment to the priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences. The next evolution of the conference took place prior to the 1991-92 academic year when the league moved to add women’s athletics as part of its sports sponsorship lineup and, as part of this rebirth, changed its name to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The idea behind the SCAC and the commitments made by those charter members in 1991 remain in place today. SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student interest and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports. SCAC member institutions support students in their efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions. The SCAC is currently comprised of Austin College of Sherman, Texas; Centenary College of Shreveport, Louisiana; Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado; University of Dallas of Irving, Texas; Schreiner University of Kerrville, Texas; Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas; Texas Lutheran University of Seguin, Texas; and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. The SCAC office is located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

history of the scac The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was founded and began operation on September 1, 1962, as the College Athletic Conference (CAC). Centre College of Danville, Kentucky; Southwestern at Memphis (Tennessee) (now known as Rhodes College); The University of the South of Sewanee, Tennessee; and Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Virginia, were the four charter members of the conference. Later in 1962, Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri, became the fifth member and the CAC remained unchanged until 1972. Following membership changes throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the conference went through restructuring and renaming. With the addition of Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi, and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, in 1988 and Hendrix College of Conway, Arkanasas, and Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991, membership reached a then all-time high of eight. That same year (1991), the conference renamed itself the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, hired its first full-time commissioner Stephen P. Argo - and a permanent conference office was established in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of restructuring, the league also adopted its current primary mark and adopted blue (pms 287) and gold (pms 131) as the official colors of the conference. Membership changes continued throughout the '90s. The SCAC added Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, in 1993 with participation beginning in the 1994-95 academic year. In 1997-98, the SCAC added both DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology of Terre Haute, Ind., with participation beginning in 1998-99. As part of a year-long celebration in 2005-06, the league celebrated its 15th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. The league adopted a special anniversary logo (pictured left) and as part of the celebration, 15th anniversary teams were selected for all conference sponsored sports. After Rose-Hulman announced its intentions to leave the conference, Austin College of Sherman, Texas and Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado, were confirmed as the 10th and 11th members of the league in 2006 with participation beginning in the 2006-07 academic year. Birmingham-Southern College of Birmingham, Alabama, a former member of the Division I Big South Conference, was approved as the 12th member of the SCAC and began play in 2007-08. Prior to the 2010-11 academic year, DePauw University announced that it would leave the conference. The University of Dallas was quickly tabbed to replace DePauw effective July 1, 2011 - maintaining the league's membership total at 12 institutions. In 2010-11, the league celebrated its 20th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. As part of the celebration, in addition to the use

of a special mark, the league office selected the Top 20 moments for each conference-sponsored sport. Those moments were announced throughout the 2010-11 academic year. After the conclusion of the June 7, 2011 SCAC Presidents’ meeting, the conference announced that seven of its twelve member institutions would be leaving to form a new conference effective at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year. The schools departing include founding CAC/SCAC members Centre College, Sewanee-The University of the South, and Rhodes College, in addition to Birmingham-Southern College, Hendrix College, Millsaps College, and Oglethorpe University. With membership down to five institutions – the conference’s lowest number since the 1979-80 academic year – the “new” SCAC wasted little time in adding to its membership rolls. In 2010-11, the league celebrated its 20th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. As part of the celebration, in addition to the use of a special mark (pictured right), the league office selected the Top 20 moments for each conference-sponsored sport. Those moments were announced throughout the 2010-11 academic year. With membership down to five institutions – the conference’s lowest number since the 1979-80 academic year – the “new” SCAC wasted little time in adding to its membership rolls. On September 28, 2011, Centenary College of Louisiana, a former American Southwest Conference institution, announced it would be joining the SCAC beginning in the 2012-2013 season. Two more ASC schools will join the SCAC for the 2013-14 season: Schreiner University announced their decision on January 23, 2012, and on February 16, 2012, Texas Lutheran University announced it too would join the SCAC. The addition of Texas Lutheran insured that the conference would retain its status as an active NCAA Division III conference as well as automatic bids in nine of its 14 AQ sports, including baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball. On the national athletics stage, the SCAC has had its fair share of success - both in terms of team championships (eight) and individual championships (33).

2005-2006

2010-2011

7 In the days when the league was known at the College Athletic Conference, Chris Fugman of Centre College gave the conference its first individual title with a victory in the 400 IM at the 1980 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, and Chris Trapp of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the men’s javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track Field national championships three straight years (1984-1986). Nao Kinoshita of Rhodes College won the 1996 Division III women’s tennis singles title, capturing the first individual national title in the SCAC era. Kinoshita also won the 1997 singles title and combined with Taylor Tarver to capture the ‘97 doubles title. Ryan Loftus of Rose-Hulman captured the men’s pole vault title at the 1998 Indoor Track & Field championships. Heather Stone of University of the South-Sewanee claimed both the women’s indoor and outdoor 1,500 meter titles in 2000. And later that same season, the league claimed its first team national championships as Trinity University won both the men’s and women’s tennis titles. In the winter of 2003, Matt Smith of Rose-Hulman won the 100 yard breaststroke at the Division III men’s national swimming championships, and Trinity captured the women’s basketball championship - all in the same weekend. The following fall (in 2003), the Trinity men’s soccer team gave the league title #4, and the DePauw women’s basketball team became the fifth team from the conference to win a national championship when it captured the 2006-07 Division III title. Trinity’s Christyn Schumann won the women’s high jump at three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track & Field national championships (2004-06), and Liz Bondi of DePauw captured the 16th individual national championship won by a CAC/SCAC student-athlete when she won the 2007 women’s tennis singles title. The 2008-09 season was a banner year as one team and three individual student-athletes won national titles for the SCAC. Todd Wildman of Trinity won the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships and Chrys Jones of Centre College won the triple jump at the Outdoor Track & Field national championships. On the links, the Oglethorpe University men earned the league’s sixth team title with a first-place finish at the NCAA Golf Championships. The Petrels were led by Olafur Loftsson, who earned medalist honors and the league’s 19th individual title. In 2009-10, the SCAC had four different individuals win a total of five national titles. Todd Wildman of Trinity won his second-consecutive

indoor national title in the pentathlon. Centre’s Chrys Jones double-dipped and claimed national titles in the triple jump at the both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor national championships. At the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving championships, Trinity teammates Lindsay Martin and Hayley Emerick claimed individual titles in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively. In 2010-11, Chrys Jones became just the second SCAC student-athlete to win four career individual national titles as he repeated at the NCAA Indoor national championships in the triple jump. Centre’s Chris Morris earned the league its 26th individual national title when he claimed medalist honors at the 2011 NCAA Golf Championships. The 2011-12 academic year was one of the most successful in the league’s 50-year history. Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern College won the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships, Jordan DeGayner of Colorado College won the 200 free at the NCAA Swimming & Diving national championships and Ruth Hahn of Trinity University continued the Tigers’ diving dominanace with an individual title on the 3-meter board. Later in the spring, SCAC student-athletes earned two more individual national titles with Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe University earning the league its third medalist in four years at the NCAA Men’s Golf championship and Birmingham’s Goode picked up her second individual national title with a win in the 100-meter hurdels at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships. In addition, Oglethorpe University earned the conference its seventh team national title with a victory at the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. The “new” SCAC returned to national prominence in 2013-14 as Stephen Culberson of Trinity University won the 100 free at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and, in its first year in the conference, Schreiner University gave the conference its eighth team national championship with a victory at the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships - the league’s third national title in the sport in six years. A bell, donated by the Norfolk and Western Railway, was adopted as the SCAC’s “President’s Trophy” and serves as the symbol for the conference. The President’s Trophy is displayed for one year on the campus of the school with the combined men’s and women’s athletics program that accumulates the highest points total in the all-sports race established by the conference. The bell is awarded at the conclusion of the spring season.

2016 season preview

With a large group of talented returners bolstered by a trio of strong newcomers, the Austin College softball team will be looking to get back to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament again in 2016 and take another step toward challenging for the conference crown. Last season the ‘Roos finished the year with a record of 10-16 in a season marred by unprecedented weather that wiped out much of the schedule, and the ‘Roos also finished the season with a 5-13 record in conference play. This year, coach Andrea Vangoss hopes the experience gained by her young team last season will have them ready to compete in 2016. A trio of seniors will be leading the way, with twins Briana and Sophia Hernandez back for their final season along with first baseman Mary Whitworth. All three have been significant contributors throughout their Austin College careers and will be looking to go out with a bang this season. Briana Hernandez finished last season with a .323 batting average to go along with seven doubles, two home runs, and 12 runs batted in, while Sophia Hernandez batted .288 with a homer and seven RBI in addition to posting three victories in the circle. She finished the season with 35 strikeouts and a 4.97 ERA in 14 appearances, including 11 starts as a pitcher. Whitworth appeared in 24 games primarily as a defensive player, and was joined in the infield by a strong group of freshmen who enter their sophomore seasons with a full year of playing experience under their belts. Raquel Vara batted .359 in her first season as the team’s starting shortstop, leading the team with 11 doubles and six stolen bases. Delaney England quickly emerged as the team’s starter at

second, hitting .324 with 11 runs batted in, and Felicia Rivera saw plenty of action at third base, finishing the year with two doubles and six RBI in her first collegiate season. Junior Emily Low returns to lead the ‘Roos in the outfield after starting 25 games last season. Low collected 14 hits last year, and will be joined in the outfield by Jaylin Clevenger and Lauren Mara, who both saw plenty of action during their freshman campaigns. Clevenger appeared in 22 games, belting two doubles with six RBI, and Mara batted .280 with five doubles in 18 games played. In addition to Sophia Hernandez, the ‘Roos will be led in the circle by Victoria Herrera, a junior who has been among the SCAC leaders in strikeouts in each of her first two seasons at Austin College. Last season Herrera posted seven victories with a 4.15 ERA, striking out 72 batters in 82.2 innings of work. Providing additional depth and experience will be infielder Chelsea Easley, who batted .250 in 17 games last season, as well as outfielders Ali Carnes, Kierra Gaither, and Amanda Nolting. The ‘Roos also add three talented first year players in outfielder Elizabeth Parks, pitcher Kathrine Wright, and infielder Kylee Fowler. All three should see plenty of action this season after finishing up excellent high school careers a year ago. Between the returning, experienced talent and the strong newcomers, the ‘Roos look poised to take another step up the SCAC standings in 2016.

2016 staff

MARK suire Mark Suire embarks on his inaugural season with the Centenary College softball team for the 2016 season. Suire joins the Centenary athletic family after more than 23 years of teaching and coaching at the high school level in Louisiana. Most recently from 2013-2015, he served as a teacher and softball coach at Catholic High School in New Iberia. Suire guided the Panthers to the State Playoffs the past two seasons, including a berth in the Regional Playoffs in 2015. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1992, Suire began his career with stints at Catholic High School (1992-1993) and St. Edmund High School (1993-1995) as a teacher and coach in football, basketball, and baseball. In 1995, he took over a softball program at Abbeville High School that had only one win in the two previous seasons. In just three years as head coach, Suire led the Wildcats to the Quarterfinals of the State Tournament for the first time in school history. Suire served as a teacher and the softball coach at Delcambre High School from

2001-2013. After taking over a program in the second year of existence, he tallied a 227-101 record in 12 seasons with the Panthers, including five State Semifinal Appearances and a State Championship. From 2006-2010, his teams at Delcambre High School won more postseason games (17) than any program in Louisiana. During his high school coaching career, Suire helped implement policies and procedural guidelines to ensure academic and athletic success for his teams. Numerous players under his guidance went on to participate in collegiate softball and even received athletic scholarship offers. He also served as President of the Louisiana Softball Coaches Association from 2011-2013.

season preview

The Centenary softball team, who finished 7-26 overall and 4-20 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play in 2015, will embark on a new era in 2015. The Ladies will be led by first year head coach Mark Suire, who comes to Centenary after more than 20 years of teaching and coaching experience in Louisiana. The softball team will also feature 11 newcomers, including junior Mallory Ford, who played soccer in the fall for Centenary. However, the Ladies return sophomore shortstop Anna Dunn, the 2015 SCAC Softball Newcomer of the Year. Dunn led the conference with five home runs, while leading the team and finishing fourth in the SCAC with a .409 batting average. She also led the team in runs (24), RBI’s (22), doubles (eight), home runs (five), triples (one), assists (73) and extra base hits (14). Dunn also holds a 10-game hitting streak heading in to the season. The Ladies also return all three players named to Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Leading the way is outfielder Emily Sexton, the only senior on the 2016 squad. Sexton played in 31 games last season, hitting .297 with 22 hits, 10 runs and six RBI’s. Junior outfielder Lizzie Moran played in 31 games last season and hit .302 to win All-Con-

ference. Finally, second baseman Michelle Tasin hit .300 and finished second on the team with two home runs. The 2016 slate for the Maroon and White features 18 home games and four contests against Texas Lutheran, who made the 2015 NCAA Division III softball tournament. All game days will be doubleheaders for the Maroon and White. “The schedule we have inherited for my first season at Centenary will present many challenges, but will also afford us the opportunity to be successful if we continue to improve,” said Suire. “Our fall practices were productive, but we must be able to translate offseason progress into on-field success in the spring. We are optimistic about the prospects for a successful season and look forward to Centenary College represented in the SCAC Softball Tournament in San Antonio this April.” Softball will play six games on the road before its only home games of the month of February, a double header against Rust on February 21. The Ladies outscored the Bearcats 30-1 in two games last season. Courtesy of Centenary Sports Information

BETH krysiak

In two seasons as the head coach of the University of Dallas softball team, Beth Krysiak has compiled a coaching record of 34-45. Krysiak most recently guided her Lady Crusaders to an eight-game win improvement in the spring, and notched a program-most 22 wins. The 22-16 mark equals/surpasses the .500 point for the first time since the 2010 squad went 18-18. Under Krysiak’s second season at the helm, UD boasted historic numbers in its fourth year within the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). The Lady Crusaders set a program-best 13-9 clip versus conference foes, and also ranked the highest in the SCAC standings since joining. Slotted as the No. 3-Seed in the tournament bracket, Dallas fell to host, No. 6-Seed Schreiner University. No.4-Seed Southwestern University ended the Lady Crusaders’ record setting campaign. A program-best, eight members of Krysiak’s UD softball team claimed Postseason Accolades in the SCAC. Sophomores Lyda Tesauro and Katie Lee notched All-Conference First Team, which was the first time the Navy and White had a member achieve the recognition. The duo also set single-season records, with Tesauro cracking the doubles mark at 15 to pace the team. Lee earned 19 of the team’s record-tying 20 victories to notch a single-season feat. The native of Houston, Texas, also was able to set the career-win total at 25. Krysiak also had sophomore Avery Finch be tabbed on the All-SCAC Second Team. Finch broke a single-season record of 30 stolen bases to lead the squad and league. Rounding out Postseason All-Conference awards with honorable mentions included: seniors Ashley Pickert and Taylor Garcia, junior Erin Begle, freshman Madison Goforth, and sophomore Allison Kotlar. The sixth head coach in program history, Krysiak spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons

as an assistant coach for Prairie View A&M University, a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I institution in Prairie View, Texas. The Lady Panthers wrapped their 2013 campaign with a 19-23 record that included a 7-9 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). Krysiak helped the team go 39-41 overall and 15-14 in the SWAC since joining the staff in December 2012. Her primary duties were in skills development, creating practice plans, running practices, conducting mental training sessions, scouting opponents, serving as a base coach, charting, field maintenance, budgeting and academic support. Krysiak previously coached softball as an assistant at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, after working as a graduate assistant at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan. She has held varying responsibilities with the Houston Power in Texas, Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport, La., and the South Montgomery Girls Softball League in Spring, Texas. In May 2012, Krysiak obtained a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Ottawa. May 2010 brought her a Bachelor of Science in Health and Exercise Science as well as a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Centenary. Krysiak primarily played catcher for the Centenary softball team from 2005-2010. The Ladies at the time competed in NCAA Division I, and are now Division III members of the SCAC. Krysiak comes to the University of Dallas with years of community service involvement, which includes breast cancer research fundraising and volunteering at a food pantry/clothing donation center. She has also been a church lector and a religious education class student-teacher.

season preview

The University of Dallas softball team tied a program best 20 wins and placed a program best seven athletes on the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) All-Conference Team last season. Five from that bunch return for head coach Beth Krysiak, who guided the program to an eight-win improvement from her first season with Dallas. UD also rattled off a 13-9 record in SCAC play, which was the best mark since joining the league. Coach Krysiak discussed some of the keys the Lady Crusaders need to continue the success. “In order for us to be successful this year, we simply need to be ourselves. We need to work hard and trust in each other. This is a really special group of people. As long as we play Dallas softball day in and day out, this will be a really fun year.” Coach Krysiak enters her third season at the helm, and boasts her largest roster since joining Dallas. She is coming into the spring with 23 players. They are led by strong core of returners with nine players that have been on each team since coach Krysiak arrived at UD. Headlining the group is All-SCAC First Team Katie Lee. The junior right-handed pitcher logged several individual season and career records for the Lady Crusaders in 2015. Lee was in the circle 34 times and made 31 starts. The Houston, Texas, native set a single-season record for wins with 19. This mark led the SCAC and United States Collegiate Athletic Conference (USCAA). Additionally, Lee tossed an SCAC-leading and career-high 212 innings to claim the new record for Dallas Softball. Lee bolstered her career win total at UD to 25, which is the new record.

Three hitters guided the offense with batting averages above .300 that return to fill the lineup include: Lyda Tesauro (.369), Erin Begle (.354), and Avery Finch (.325). Dallas did graduate Taylor Garcia, who paced the club with three homers, 40 RBI, and a .373 batting average. Tesauro racked 38 hits, 15 doubles, three triples, and had a homer to help produce a .602 slugging percentage. She joined Lee on the All-SCAC First Team list for UD members. Finch produced a career-best 30 steals, which was tops in the SCAC and USCAA leagues. The outfielder ranked second on the team with 39 hits. Finch was an All-SCAC Second Team mention. Begle is one of two seniors on the squad. The three-year letterwinner led last season with 14 free passes. In addition to this veteran core that is hoping to reach the next step, the Lady Crusaders have an influx of new faces on the lineup card. 14 true freshmen expect to have an impact for Dallas. “The freshmen as a group are very talented,” coach Krysiak praised. “Our team is very diverse this year and seeing everyone grow together to become one team has been really inspiring.” The Lady Crusaders open the campaign on February 14. A doubleheader with Hendrix College is slated currently for 12 p.m.

2016 staff

AMY meyers Former Schreiner assistant softball coach Amy Meyer was named to replace Jessica Peterka on Wednesday, October 22, 2014. For Meyer, this was her first head coaching opportunity. In her first season with the Mountaineers, Meyer led the team to a 10-31 record, finishing 6-16 in SCAC play. The team earned the sixth seed for the SCAC tournament, and proceeded to upset three other teams in route to a third place finish in the tournament. Three players earned All-SCAC recognition, headlined by Sydney Christopher who was named a first teams selection. Samantha Cordon and Briana Rodriguez joined their teammate, both earning honorable mention honors. Prior to coming to SU, she served as assistant softball coach at Northeast Community College this past spring. She also was the graduate assistant coach at her alma mater, Hardin-Simmons University from August, 2012 through December, 2013. She has also been an assistant coach with the Texas Elite 14U and Texas Stix 14U club programs and is a private softball instructor. She was a four-year participant on the HSU Cowgirl proram and her team won the American Southwest Conference West Division title during her career. She was All-ASC second team and was named to the ASC All-Tournament Team. She also was named All-ASC honorable mention and was First Team All-ASC as a second baseman. Meyer has a Masters in Kinesiology, Sports and Recreation from HSU and an

undergraduate degree in Sports Fitness and Leisure Studies from the same school. She earned President’s List twice during her playing career for the Cowgirls. Director of Athletics Ron Macosko on the move: “This... opening creates a unique opportunity for a young coach whom I strongly believe has great potential as a leader. In her short time on our staff, Coach Meyer has already made a very positive impression with our players. She is energetic, passionate and very much committed to the success of the program - but more importantly - to her student-athletes. I think that she will be a great fit with our culture and our philosophies on building a successful program. She embodied that type of student-athlete when in her undergraduate career and we know that she will promote those same values of academic success, personal growth as well as continuing to build a winning program here at Schreiner. We are looking forward to watching her grow and prosper in this profession.” Coach Meyer is a national strength and conditioning association member and has ACE coach certification. She resides in Bandera, TX.

ANGELA froboese Froboese is in her eighth season as the head of the first-ever intercollegiate softball program at Southwestern. Southwestern has quickly become a powerhouse despite having a young program. They have earned a spot in the SCAC Conference Tournament every year, entering as the #1 seed in the West twice. In 2010 and 2013 Southwestern won the conference title and earned a bid to the NCAA Regional. In 2010 they advanced to the NCAA Regional Semifinal before falling to eventual national champion East Texas Baptist University 3-2. Coach Froboese was named SCAC Coach-of-the-Year for three consecutive years (2009, 2010, 2011) and earned the honor again in 2013. She has coached players to All-SCAC selections 44 times including 14 First Team picks and nine NFCA All-Region players. Froboese comes to Southwestern after spending four years at Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX. During her tenure at Howard Payne, she posted an overall record of 85-65, 67-37 in conference play. Froboese led the team to a 2113 overall record in her first season at the helm and built the program up to a 28-win season in 2007, the most wins in program history.

In 2004, the Lady Jackets led all of NCAA Division III in doubles 69. In four years, Froboese produced three West All-Region players, 27 All-Conference selections and nine National Fastpitch Coaches Association Academic All-Americans. Also, during her tenure her players had a graduation rate of 100 percent. Prior to her time at Howard Payne, Froboese spent two years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Stephen F. Austin State University. A 2001 graduate of SFA, she finished her career in possession of four batting records. Froboese struck out just 10 times in 601 collegiate at-bats. During the 2001 season, she set a single-season hit record with 67 base hits. She also set career marks with 98 runs batted in, 36 doubles and 123 runs scored. In 2001, she was named the Southland Conference Utility Player of the Year. Froboese earned a Bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and holds a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from SFA.

season preview

Southwestern posts a young squad for the 2016 season but with the same high expectations as ever. Head Coach Angela Froboese returns five starters in her eighth season leading the Pirates. The Pirates ended the season with an 18-21 overall record and went 12-9 in SCAC play to finish the regular season in fourth place, advancing to the SCAC Championship for the seventh consecutive year. SU fell 5-3 to host institution Schreiner in the second round. Leading the way is Southwestern’s lone senior, Stacy Rosengren. Rosengren, a 5’ 6” infielder from Round Rock, Texas, posted a .359 batting average and led the team in RBIs (26) and doubles (11), earning a Second Team All-SCAC pick last year. Joining Rosengren is First Team All-SCAC and Third Team All-West Region selection junior Marissa Irvin. Irvin led the team with a .413 batting average with 15 RBIs. One of the greatest questions for Coach Froboese will be in the circle. Southwestern has four talented pitchers but are largely untested and will be a key to the Pirate’s success this

season. The focus of this year’s team will be on consistency throughout the game. Last season the Pirates allowed 34 runs in the sixth inning, six more runs than any other single inning. Southwestern opens the season at home on January 30th, facing Southwestern Assemblies of God. A late February trip to Florida with be the final tune-up opportunity before the Pirates dive into SCAC play against Trinity on March 5th in San Antonio. Courtesy of Southwestern Sports Information

WADE wilson The 2016 campaign will mark the fifth year for Wilson at the helm of the Bulldog program, a program he’s quickly built into one of the best in all of NCAA Division III. The Bulldogs have won back-to-back Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships and have made consecutive trips to the NCAA Division III regional tournament. TLU was the 2014 NCAA DIII Tyler Regional runner-up and finished third in the 2015 NCAA DIII Tyler Regional. In four years with the Bulldogs, he’s amassed a 122-44 (.735 win pct.) overall record and a 44-1 mark in the SCAC. He has won more than 500 games (counting his TLU victories and his high school wins). Three seasons ago, Wilson led TLU to an American Southwest Conference West Division Championship - the second in school history. In 2014, Wilson coached the Bulldogs to an outstanding 33-9 record and an absolutely dominant conference campaign in the SCAC that saw them finish 21-1, outscoring SCAC opponents 194-29. The Bulldogs ran through the SCAC Championship, finishing the tournament on a 14-inning shutout streak and earning the program’s first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance. The Bulldogs weren’t satisfied with just getting to the tournament though, they opened it up with a thrilling 2-1 extra-inning win over thenNo. 3 Texas-Tyler. TLU ended the 2015 season at No. 20 in the final National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top 25 Poll. The Bulldogs received 53 total voting points in the closing poll of 2015. The Bulldogs had a school-best national ranking of 14th in the final regular-season poll, which came out on May 6, 2015. The Bulldogs are 44-1 all-time in the SCAC and have won regular-season titles and conference tournament titles in the last two seasons. The Bulldogs have yet to drop a conference tournament game in the SCAC. The 2015 Bulldogs became the first softball team in school history to go undefeated in conference play. TLU in 2015 also set new single-season

school records for runs (292), RBI (251), batting average (.366), wins (37), and consecutive wins (33). In his first four seasons, Wilson has already seen his players earn all-conference recognition 37 different times, including the entire TLU starting lineup earning All-SCAC honors in 2014. That year, Wilson coached the SCAC Player of the Year (Ashley Jacobsen) and SCAC Pitcher of the Year (Taylor Grissom). In 2015, Wilson and his staff were again honored with the Coach of the Year award, and the Bulldogs picked up SCAC Player of the Year (Jennifer Gallagher) and SCAC Pitcher of the Year (Taylor Grissom). His first season with the Bulldogs was the 2012 season, in which the Bulldogs went 19-19 overall and produced a 13-11 mark in the ASC West Division. TLU tied for third in the ASC West and missed out on the conference tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. Wilson came to TLU after a successful head coaching run at Brenham High School in Brenham, Texas. Wilson coached the Brenham varsity softball team for nine seasons, 2003 to 2011, and led the Cubettes to the 2005 Class 4A State Championship. Wilson was the Class 4A Associated Press Coach of the Year in 2005. The Cubettes were ranked in the Class 4A Top 10 for nine consecutive seasons. In addition to winning the state title in 2005, Brenham reached the state semifinals in 2007, the regional semifinals in 2003, and the regional quarterfinals in 2004, 2006, and 2008. Brenham went 27-8 in 2011 and advanced to the Class 4A Bi-District playoffs. Wilson, a native of Cuero, Texas, also coached varsity softball at Sinton High School in Sinton, Texas for the 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002 seasons. Sinton made Class 3A State Tournament semifinal appearances in 1999 and 2001. Wilson posted a high school record of 383-71-6 in his 13 seasons as a head coach. His high school winning percentage stands at .839. Wilson was the fastest coach to reach 300 wins in Texas high school softball. He coached 11 high school NFCA All-Americans and two Golden Spike Award winners.

Coming off a second straight NCAA Division III tournament appearance and an unblemished 23-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference record in 2015, Texas Lutheran Softball enters 2016 with a star-studded roster and loads of expectations. TLU advanced to the NCAA DIII Softball Championship for the second consecutive year after winning a second straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship. The Bulldogs are 44-1 all-time in the SCAC and have won regular-season titles and conference tournament titles in the last two seasons. She tossed 109, giving up just 12 earned runs and striking out 45. Fellow starter Veny Pizana went 10-2 with a 1.34 ERA in 2015. season preview

The Trinity Tigers softball team, led by fourth-year Head Coach Brandi Crnkovic, has adopted a motto for the 2016 campaign. It comes from Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s legend Ronda Rousey, and it reads like this: “Champions DO more than those who THINK they’ve done more.” That will be the can-do attitude of the Tigers as they take the field February 18 at Chapman University in Orange, California. The 12 returning players, and 11 newcomers, are more than ready to improve on the team’s 2015 record of 18-18. “I think the fans will see a hard-working and dedicated team,” Coach Crnkovic said of her charges. The players have put in so much work on their own during the off season. You will see a team that is determined, and has strong leadership from our seniors.” There are four seniors on the Tigers squad this year, who have been “battle tested:” pitcher/outfielder Kaci Wellik, outfielder Emily Fleischman, first baseman Ariel Wilks, and pitcher/utility player Katie Castillon. Along with last year’s three seniors, the current group contributed to a 16-16 regular-season record, and a 10-6 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Ten Tiger players were elected to the All-SCAC Team, including seven returning standouts. Junior outfielder Mackenzie Hill was selected for the All-SCAC First Team, after being a Second Team honoree the previous season. Hill leads the returning players in batting average, at .314. Last season, Hill scored 22 runs and drove in 14. Four players made the All-SCAC Second Team, including junior second baseman/outfielder Hillary Hoffman, who batted .305 last year. Hoffman leads the returnees with 17 RBI. Wellik became a three-time All-SCAC member, after earning First Team accolades the previous three seasons. On the mound, Wellik had the best ERA, at 3.49, and sported a 9-8 record, along with one save. Wellik struck out 81 opposing players over 108.1 inning. Castillon was selected for the All-SCAC squad for the second consecutive season. In 2014, she was honored as the SCAC Newcomer of the Year. Last season, Castillon batted .371 and had 10 RBI. Castillon went 5-7 as a pitcher, with a 4.55 ERA, while striking out 31 batters in 75.1 innings of work. Sophomore second baseman/shortstop Sabrina Nieto hit .300 in her first season as a Trinity Tiger. Fleischman and junior pitcher/first baseman Katie Glomb were AllSCAC Honorable Mention recipients. It marked the third straight year Fleischman garnered All-SCAC honors. Fleischman, who batted .297, led the entire team in runs scored with 26. She also stole 11 bases on 14 attempts. Glomb was a .283 hitter, and recorded a 4-3 mark for the Tigers on the pitcher’s mound, while picking up two saves. She had an

ERA of 4.65, and fanned 28 batters over 46.2 innings. A junior who was a standout two seasons ago, third baseman Sarah Paller, has returned to the team. Paller was selected for the 2014 AllSCAC First Team, and led the Tigers with a .392 batting average. She also smacked three home runs that season. Among the new Trinity Tigers are pitcher/outfielder Delfina Morales of Tucson, Arizona (Salpointe Catholic High School); catcher/outfielder Stephanie Crumrine of nearby Boerne, Texas (Champion High School); and outfielder/second baseman Marisa Trevino of Katy, Texas (Seven Lakes High School). Bolstering the lineup will be outfielder Destinee Davis of Katy, Texas (Morton Ranch High School); outfielder Leah Rubio of Katy, Texas (Seven Lakes High School); outfielder Emily Babcock of Gilbert, Arizona (Perry High School); second baseman Hailey Wilson of Chandler, Arizona (Seton Catholic Preparatory School); second baseman/catcher Siera Spurlock of Spring, Texas (Spring High School); shortstop/outfielder Devon Potter of Arlington, Texas (James Martin High School); first baseman/outfielder Emily Reed of Flower Mound, Texas (Marcus High School); and second baseman outfielder Rylie Goldwait of Sugar Land, Texas (Clements High School); “We will have a little more speed than in the past, and our pitching will have more depth,” Coach Crnkovic said. “We did lose some big hitters, but the returners and freshmen will step into that role. We’ll be able to play around with the lineup more, and keep the other teams on their toes.” Following the initial three-day trip to California, the Tigers open their 20-game home schedule February 24 by hosting Concordia (TX) University. SCAC home games include Southwestern on March 5-6, Schreiner on March 25-26, and Austin College April 9-10. Trinity will serve as the host for the SCAC Championship April 22-24, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Assistant Coach Kara Reeves, entering her fourth season on the job, is looking forward to coaching the energetic Tigers. “I think we have some fireballs on our team this year, from the freshmen all the way to the seniors,” Coach Reeves said. “They push each other, they are loud, and they are go-getters. They don’t hold anything back. You are going to get 100% from them all of the time.”
