about the cover Throughout the 2015-16 academic year, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) will celebrate its 25th anniversary as a co-educational NCAA Division III athletics conference. The conference’s origins date to 1962 when the College Athletic Conference (CAC) was formed to provide an association through which member institutions could compete in intercollegiate sports activities among teams representative of their respective student bodies. A primary tenet of this conference was a shared commitment to the priority of the overall quality of academic standards and quality educational experiences. The next evolution of the conference took place prior to the 1991-92 academic year when the league moved to add women’s athletics as part of its sports sponsorship lineup and, as part of this rebirth, changed its name to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The idea behind the SCAC and the commitments made by those charter members in 1991 remain in place today. SCAC member institutions are committed to sponsoring a variety of varsity sports to maximize opportunities for student participation. SCAC schools also operate under the principle that participation in sports should be solely from student interest and enjoyment of athletic competition, and that no financial aid shall be given to any student which is conditional upon athletic ability or participation in intercollegiate sports. SCAC member institutions support students in their efforts to reach high levels of performance by providing them with adequate facilities, competent coaching and appropriate competitive opportunities with students from similar institutions. The SCAC is currently comprised of Austin College of Sherman, Texas; Centenary College of Shreveport, Louisiana; Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado; University of Dallas of Irving, Texas; Schreiner University of Kerrville, Texas; Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas; Texas Lutheran University of Seguin, Texas; and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. The SCAC office is located in Lawrenceville, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia.

history of the scac The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) was founded and began operation on September 1, 1962, as the College Athletic Conference (CAC). Centre College of Danville, Kentucky; Southwestern at Memphis (Tennessee) (now known as Rhodes College); The University of the South of Sewanee, Tennessee; and Washington and Lee University of Lexington, Virginia, were the four charter members of the conference. Later in 1962, Washington University of St. Louis, Missouri, became the fifth member and the CAC remained unchanged until 1972. Following membership changes throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the conference went through restructuring and renaming. With the addition of Millsaps College of Jackson, Mississippi, and Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas, in 1988 and Hendrix College of Conway, Arkanasas, and Oglethorpe University of Atlanta, Georgia, in 1991, membership reached a then all-time high of eight. That same year (1991), the conference renamed itself the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, hired its first full-time commissioner Stephen P. Argo - and a permanent conference office was established in Atlanta, Georgia. As part of restructuring, the league also adopted its current primary mark and adopted blue (pms 287) and gold (pms 131) as the official colors of the conference. Membership changes continued throughout the '90s. The SCAC added Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, in 1993 with participation beginning in the 1994-95 academic year. In 1997-98, the SCAC added both DePauw University of Greencastle, Indiana, and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology of Terre Haute, Ind., with participation beginning in 1998-99. As part of a year-long celebration in 2005-06, the league celebrated its 15th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. The league adopted a special anniversary logo (pictured left) and as part of the celebration, 15th anniversary teams were selected for all conference sponsored sports. After Rose-Hulman announced its intentions to leave the conference, Austin College of Sherman, Texas and Colorado College of Colorado Springs, Colorado, were confirmed as the 10th and 11th members of the league in 2006 with participation beginning in the 2006-07 academic year. Birmingham-Southern College of Birmingham, Alabama, a former member of the Division I Big South Conference, was approved as the 12th member of the SCAC and began play in 2007-08. Prior to the 2010-11 academic year, DePauw University announced that it would leave the conference. The University of Dallas was quickly tabbed to replace DePauw effective July 1, 2011 - maintaining the league's membership total at 12 institutions. In 2010-11, the league celebrated its 20th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. As part of the celebration, in addition to the use

of a special mark, the league office selected the Top 20 moments for each conference-sponsored sport. Those moments were announced throughout the 2010-11 academic year. After the conclusion of the June 7, 2011 SCAC Presidents’ meeting, the conference announced that seven of its twelve member institutions would be leaving to form a new conference effective at the conclusion of the 2011-12 academic year. The schools departing include founding CAC/SCAC members Centre College, Sewanee-The University of the South, and Rhodes College, in addition to Birmingham-Southern College, Hendrix College, Millsaps College, and Oglethorpe University. With membership down to five institutions – the conference’s lowest number since the 1979-80 academic year – the “new” SCAC wasted little time in adding to its membership rolls. In 2010-11, the league celebrated its 20th anniversary as the restructured SCAC. As part of the celebration, in addition to the use of a special mark (pictured right), the league office selected the Top 20 moments for each conference-sponsored sport. Those moments were announced throughout the 2010-11 academic year. On September 28, 2011, Centenary College of Louisiana, a former American Southwest Conference institution, announced it would be joining the SCAC beginning in the 2012-2013 season. Two more ASC schools will join the SCAC for the 2013-14 season: Schreiner University announced their decision on January 23, 2012, and on February 16, 2012, Texas Lutheran University announced it too would join the SCAC. The addition of Texas Lutheran insured that the conference would retain its status as an active NCAA Division III conference as well as automatic bids in nine of its 14 AQ sports, including baseball, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, softball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and volleyball. On the national athletics stage, the SCAC has had its fair share of success - both in terms of team championships (eight) and individual championships (33).

2005-2006

2010-2011

7 In the days when the league was known at the College Athletic Conference, Chris Fugman of Centre College gave the conference its first individual title with a victory in the 400 IM at the 1980 NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships, and Chris Trapp of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology won the men’s javelin at the NCAA Outdoor Track Field national championships three straight years (1984-1986). Nao Kinoshita of Rhodes College won the 1996 Division III women’s tennis singles title, capturing the first individual national title in the SCAC era. Kinoshita also won the 1997 singles title and combined with Taylor Tarver to capture the ‘97 doubles title. Ryan Loftus of Rose-Hulman captured the men’s pole vault title at the 1998 Indoor Track & Field championships. Heather Stone of University of the South-Sewanee claimed both the women’s indoor and outdoor 1,500 meter titles in 2000. And later that same season, the league claimed its first team national championships as Trinity University won both the men’s and women’s tennis titles. In the winter of 2003, Matt Smith of Rose-Hulman won the 100 yard breaststroke at the Division III men’s national swimming championships, and Trinity captured the women’s basketball championship - all in the same weekend. The following fall (in 2003), the Trinity men’s soccer team gave the league title #4, and the DePauw women’s basketball team became the fifth team from the conference to win a national championship when it captured the 2006-07 Division III title. Trinity’s Christyn Schumann won the women’s high jump at three consecutive NCAA Outdoor Track & Field national championships (2004-06), and Liz Bondi of DePauw captured the 16th individual national championship won by a CAC/SCAC student-athlete when she won the 2007 women’s tennis singles title. The 2008-09 season was a banner year as one team and three individual student-athletes won national titles for the SCAC. Todd Wildman of Trinity won the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships and Chrys Jones of Centre College won the triple jump at the Outdoor Track & Field national championships. On the links, the Oglethorpe University men earned the league’s sixth team title with a first-place finish at the NCAA Golf Championships. The Petrels were led by Olafur Loftsson, who earned medalist honors and the league’s 19th individual title. In 2009-10, the SCAC had four different individuals win a total of five national titles. Todd Wildman of Trinity won his second-consecutive

indoor national title in the pentathlon. Centre’s Chrys Jones double-dipped and claimed national titles in the triple jump at the both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor national championships. At the 2010 NCAA Swimming & Diving championships, Trinity teammates Lindsay Martin and Hayley Emerick claimed individual titles in the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, respectively. In 2010-11, Chrys Jones became just the second SCAC student-athlete to win four career individual national titles as he repeated at the NCAA Indoor national championships in the triple jump. Centre’s Chris Morris earned the league its 26th individual national title when he claimed medalist honors at the 2011 NCAA Golf Championships. The 2011-12 academic year was one of the most successful in the league’s 50-year history. Tiarra Goode of Birmingham-Southern College won the 60-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field national championships, Jordan DeGayner of Colorado College won the 200 free at the NCAA Swimming & Diving national championships and Ruth Hahn of Trinity University continued the Tigers’ diving dominanace with an individual title on the 3-meter board. Later in the spring, SCAC student-athletes earned two more individual national titles with Anthony Maccaglia of Oglethorpe University earning the league its third medalist in four years at the NCAA Men’s Golf championship and Birmingham’s Goode picked up her second individual national title with a win in the 100-meter hurdels at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field championships. In addition, Oglethorpe University earned the conference its seventh team national title with a victory at the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships. The “new” SCAC returned to national prominence in 2013-14 as Stephen Culberson of Trinity University won the 100 free at the 2014 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships and, in its first year in the conference, Schreiner University gave the conference its eighth team national championship with a victory at the 2014 NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championships - the league’s third national title in the sport in six years. A bell, donated by the Norfolk and Western Railway, was adopted as the SCAC’s “President’s Trophy” and serves as the symbol for the conference. The President’s Trophy is displayed for one year on the campus of the school with the combined men’s and women’s athletics program that accumulates the highest points total in the all-sports race established by the conference. The bell is awarded at the conclusion of the spring season.

2016 season preview

The Austin College baseball team enters its second season under head coach Mike Ramsey, and the ‘Roos will be looking to take a big step forward behind a mixture of strong returning talent and a big group of newcomers. Last season the ‘Roos finished the year with an overall record of 8-21 in a season where inclement weather wreaked havoc on the schedule. Austin College went 6-12 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play, and will be looking to build on the improvements a year ago, when the team won two more games than the previous season despite playing 10 fewer games. Much of that improvement was due to a strong showing on the pitchers mound, led by junior right-hander Brett Moody. The All-SCAC performer set a new conference record and led the nation with a remarkable 0.97 earned-run-average, finishing the year with a record of 2-2 in seven starts, and eight overall appearances on the mound. Moody struck out struck out 33 batters and yielded just seven walks, while surrendering only six earned runs in 55.2 innings of work. Also back on the hill this season is Mychael Parish, a senior right-hander who led the ‘Roos with 56.1 innings pitched and finished the season with a 3.83 earned-run-average and a team-best 35 strikeouts. Josh Lewis, a junior right-hander, also returns after coming out of the bullpen most of last season and finishing with an ERA of 2.45 with 15 strikeouts in 18.1 innings of work. Among the other returning players expected to contribute on the mound this season are senior Lane Lozano and sophomore left-hander Chase Almaguer, while Braley Williams, a junior right-hander, made 10 appearances and finished the season with a 2.00 ERA in 18.0 innings of work. On the offensive side, All-Conference catcher Gus Daniel

returns to lead the charge at the plate. Daniel batted .300 with a team-best 16 runs batted in last season while continuing to be one of the top defensive catchers in the SCAC, catching 17 runners trying to steal in 26 attempts, for an incredible stolen base percentage of .395 on the year. James Arguello returns in the outfield after finishing last year with a .316 batting average with five doubles and 14 runs batted in, and Jeremy Halford and Thomas Oberg also return to provide a wealth of experience in the outfield. Derek Hester, who played in 17 games as a freshman, is another returning outfielder providing Ramsey with plenty of depth. The ‘Roos will have to replace much of the infield, with the likes of Todd Takabuki, Josh Coughennower, Dylan Day, and Will Schommer lost to graduation. Austin Dudley returns to man shortstop after appearing in all but one game last season while splitting time between short and catcher. Scott Gelbart, a sophomore transfer from Southwestern University, will have a chance to make an immediate impact at first base. Ramsey will also be looking to his talented freshman class to help fill out the infield and provide depth both on the mound and in the outfield, with a good mix of each position among the 10 man freshman class. The ‘Roos will be relying on plenty of yough, but with the experience both on the mound and in the outfield, the team certainly has the components in place to make some noise in the SCAC this season. MIKE DIAZ Embarking on his 12th season overall and sixth as head baseball coach in 2015-16, Mike Diaz is no stranger to leading Centenary College to success. Overseeing the baseball program upon its move to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference for the 2013 season, Diaz has guided the Gents to a stellar 41-15 (.732) conference mark and two SCAC Championships in three campaigns. Player accolades under Diaz’s guidance the past five seasons include four MLB Draftees, an SCAC Freshman of the Year each of the last three seasons, an SCAC Player of the Year in 2013, an SCAC Pitcher of the Year in 2015, 30 All-Conference selections, 12 All-Tournament honorees, three All-Region winners, two Freshman All-Americans, and a D3baseball. com and an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American. Diaz himself was the SCAC Coach of the Year in both 2013 and 2015. In 2015, Diaz led the Gents to a 24-17 record (15-3 SCAC) and their second conference championship in three seasons. Taylor Henry – who was drafted by the N.Y. Mets in the 21st round – was named SCAC Pitcher of the Year and an All-West Region honoree by both D3baseball.com and ABCA/Rawlings. Henry led the SCAC in both saves (nine, 15th in the nation) and strikeouts (85, 21st in the nation). He finished second in the conference and 28th in the nation in ERA (1.59) while finishing seventh in the nation in strikeouts per nine innings (12.3). Also in the 2015 campaign, Chris Zapata was named SCAC Freshman of the Year. Centenary claimed nine All-Conference accolades and five All-Tournament selections. Diaz led the Gents to a 19-22 record in 2014 while going 11-7 in SCAC play. Six Gents were named All-SCAC First Team with Aaron Quintanilla being named SCAC Freshman of the Year. Quintanilla along with Chris Jones, also an All-Conference First Teamer, were named to the ABCA All-West Region Third Team. The Maroon and White also claimed three All-Conference Honorable Mention and two SCAC All-Tournament honorees. In 2013, Diaz helped guide the Gents to an SCAC conference crown with a record of 15-5 and an overall mark of 26-15. The 26 wins in 2013 and 24 the preceding year marked the first back-to-back winning seasons for the Maroon and White since

PAT JOLLEY Associate Head Coach

the 2009 and 2010 programs boasted a combined 63 victories. The successful campaign saw a school record 10 All-SCAC selections, including the Player and Freshman of the Year in third baseman Craig Littleman and pitcher Paul Arcement, respectively. The Gents also saw eight players earn SCAC Pitcher and Player of the Week laurels along with Tyler Clakley, Ryan Gasporra, Nick Parrott and Arcement being named to the SCAC All-Tournament Team. In 2012, Diaz guided Centenary to a 24-15 record in its first season in the American Southwest Conference. In his first season at the helm of the program, Diaz helped develop breakout seasons for freshmen RJ Talamantes and Pete Rajkovich. These two were named Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-Americans, while Talamantes was honored as a First Team All-Summit League selection at third base and Rajkovich a Second Team All-Summit League honoree in center field. They were each named to the All-Louisiana team as well. Diaz, along with his staff, played an integral role in Seth Lugo’s career as he was drafted by the New York Mets as a right-handed pitcher in 2011. In five seasons with Centenary baseball, Diaz is 105100 overall and 41-15. Prior to being named head coach in 2010, Diaz served as an associate head coach for five seasons. In this role, Diaz was instrumental as the hitting coach and infield play specialist while coaching third base. He also oversaw the team’s strength and conditioning program in addition to working as the team’s recruiting coordinator. While at Centenary as an associate coach, Diaz has helped guide the Gents to a 141-125 record and a pair of 30-win seasons in 2008 and 2009. From 2005-2010 as both an associate and his first season as head coach, he helped guide Centenary to six straight conference tournament appearances. As the recruiting coordinator, Diaz was fortunate to bring in and work with four All-Americans and 25 All-Conference players – including the 2010 Summit League Pitcher of the Year in Boone Whiting – and several All-Louisiana Sports Writers Association selections. Also under his direction, 13 players have signed professional contracts.

season preview

The 2016 edition of the Centenary baseball team, coming off a first place finish in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season for the second time in three seasons, looks to continue its successful run in its fourth season in the SCAC. The Gents will have the benefit of the last three conference Freshman Player of the Years in senior right-handed pitcher Paul Acrement (2013), junior infielder Aaron Quintanilla (2014) and sophomore catcher Chris Zapata (2015). Zapata, who was the only freshman to appear on the First or Second All-Conference team last season, led the team in both batting average (.358) and hits (40). Quintanilla, who was named All-Conference each of his first two seasons, finished second on the team with 104 assists and fifth with .293 batting average. While this season’s pitching staff has to replace 2015 SCAC Pitcher of the Year in closer Taylor Henry, who was drafted in the 21st round of the MLB Draft by the N.Y. Mets, the Gents return two-thirds of their weekend starters. Senior right-handed pitcher Holden Novak earned Second Team All-Conference honors last season, finishing second in the SCAC in both overall wins (eight) and victories in conference games (four). Sophomore right-hander Kaleb Kirk returns after finishing the season 3-2 with a 2.09 ERA. His only complete game of the year came on the final day of the regular season, allowing four hits while throwing only 96 pitches in nine innings of work to help Centenary clinch an outright SCAC regular season title against Texas Lutheran April 26. Another top returner is junior outfielder and Shreveport-native Michael Schimpf, who started all 41 games last season. He finished third for the Gents with a .309 batting average. Finally, the Maroon and White will have the benefit of a two-time SCAC Coach of the Year honoree on the bench in head coach Mike Diaz. Diaz embarks on his 12th season with the Gents, including his sixth as head coach. Accolades for the Gents during his tenure as head coach include four MLB Draftees, the aforementioned SCAC Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year honorees, 30 All-Conference selections, 12 All-Tournament members, three

All-Region winners, two Freshman All-Americans, and a D3baseball.com and an American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-American. The 2016 schedule features six contests against teams who qualified for the 2015 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament in 2015, including a three-game set against Division III College World Series participant Trinity in Shreveport March 25-26. The Maroon and White’s other three games against NCAA participants will be played in Tyler, Texas. Centenary battles UT-Tyler and Birmingham Southern as part of the Clements Fluid Tournament to begin and end the weekend February 12-14. The middle game will be played against regional-rival LeTourneau in Longview, Texas. The Gents make a midseason, weekday trip to UT-Tyler for the final regular season non-conference game April 19. “We set our schedule to play the best competition possible to prepare us for conference and post season play,” said Gents Head Coach Mike Diaz. “I feel that this year’s schedule attains that goal, and we are excited for opening day 2016.” The Gents begin the season with a seven and nine-inning games against in-state rival, Louisiana College, February 5 in Shreveport. The Maroon and White make the return trip to Pineville the next day to take on the Wildcats in the same format of two games.

oe Myers completed his fifth season with the University of Dallas baseball team, serving as the interim baseball head coach in 2014-15. Myers guided the Crusaders to a 10-28 record overall and 4-14 mark against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) foes. Under Myer’s guidance, three players were named to All-Conference Teams. Junior Luciano Villanueva and senior Trevor Keele earned the All-SCAC Second Team honors in outfield and designated hitter, respectively. Keele added to his collection with an honorable mention for pitcher, and sophomore Ryan Hammonds completed the unit with the same award as a starting arm. Myers spent the previous four seasons working as an assistant coach with former head coach Fraser Holmes, who resigned in the fall. Myers focused his role as the pitching coach during his previous position with Dallas. The Crusaders, in his four years with the team, have an earned run average of 4.77. Prior to his appointment to Dallas, he coached at Spring Arbor University (SAU) under Sam Riggleman as assistant pitching coach/assistant recruiting

coordinator. A native of Michigan, Coach Myers played collegiate baseball at Spring Arbor University (Mich.) from 2003-2008. Appearing in five seasons with the Cougars, he split time between at first and third base, before becoming a starting pitcher in his junior year. Sidelined by Tommy John Surgery, Coach Myers was moved to closer, and remained in this role for the rest of his tenure at SAU. During that season, he was named to the all-conference and all-region teams. SAU made the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) World Series two years in a row. He was responsible for closing out three games in the 2008 World Series. SAU placed third and second in those two respective appearances, and netted the nation’s best winning-streak of 36 games in 2007. Coach Myers graduated from SAU with a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing/Management, and currently resides in Irving, Texas, with wife Christie.

season preview

Coach Joe Myers enters his second season at the helm for the University of Dallas baseball team. The Crusaders are looking to improve this season, after going 10-26 during the 2015 campaign. Dallas will have some new faces, with Myers bringing in his first recruiting class since being named an interim head coach in October, 2014. 13 players have joined the squad that were not listed last season, including nine true freshmen. They will be expected to contribute on the field this season, as the total roster sits at 25 for the Crusaders. Headlining the 12 returners, which includes nine letterwinners, is senior Luciano Villanueva. The All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Second Team Outfielder batted a .322 average with a career-high 39 hits. Both categories were team-highs as the team’s lone player to hit north of .300 would add four doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He capped the campaign with a five-game hitting streak. Villanueva did see time at multiple positions in the outfield, infield, catcher, designated hitter (DH), and on the pitching mound. He was named to D3Baseball.com Team-of-the-Week for DH. Another senior that will be looking to come back after missing most of 2015 due to injury is Rene Vargas Jr. from San Antonio, Texas. The infielder made 16 starts last year and collected 13 hits, three doubles, five RBI, and scored six runs. He did have a five-game hitting streak during the young season. Prior to that, Vargas Jr. had earned two letterwinners and compiled 71 appearances with 68 starts. During his rookie campaign, Vargas Jr. was named SCAC Co-Freshman-of-the-Year and All-SCAC First Team. The other player to watch is junior Ryan Hammonds, who is looking to anchor the starting rotation for the Crusaders. He

did post an earned run average (ERA) of 3.88 last season, and compiled a team-leading 65 innings. Hammonds made 12 appearances and started 11 times on the bump. Hammonds has demonstrated leadership throughout the program earning a nod on the SCAC Spring All-Sportsmanship Team, and garnering an All-SCAC Honorable Mention award. UD did graduate last season’s senior starting arm, Martin Cronin, who led the team with 13 starts and logged 62 innings. During his career, Cronin had picked up All-SCAC First Team, United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American Second Team, and pitched in at least 12 contests throughout his durable career. Offensively, UD also graduated Trevor Keele. The first baseman hit .289 and drove in 11 for second on the team each. The former 2014 SCAC Baseball Offensive-Player-of-the-Year did finish his career on the all-conference second team, and also closed out four games on the mound. The Crusaders return juniors Cole Morden, Blake Palmer, William Marshall, Eric Felchak, and freshman Abraham Griesbauer to a pitching core that gained a lot of experience in 2015. All but Felchak pitched double-digit games and the southpaw was off by one. Dallas will open the spring season on January 30 with the first two of a three-game series at Sul Ross State University. 2016 staff

RYAN brisbin Coach Brisbin will begin his fourth season at the helm of the Schreiner Baseball program this fall. Before Schreiner, Brisbin has had eight years of head coaching experience at two colleges during his career. The most recent was a successful six year stint at NCAA Division II Davis and Elkins College of the West Virginia Conference (WVIAC). Brisbin took over a struggling program in 2001, and steadily built it up each year. His 2002 team made the WVIAC playoffs in his first year with only seven pitchers and a roster of 18. He recruited 15 freshmen for the 2003 season, many of whom would be key contributors in ‘05 and ‘06. His 2005 team won 33 games and reached the conference tournament finals before losing 14-10 in the championship game. Brisbin was named WVIAC Coach-of-the-Year after the 2005 season. His 2006 team won 27 more games for one of the most successful back-to-back season performances in school history and advanced to the second round of the WVIAC Tournament. During his time at D&E, Brisbin coached four first team All-WVIAC players and two WVIAC pitchers of the year. In a league that is known for hitting and run scoring, Brisbin’s team were known for being strong in both pitching and hitting. Although WVIAC stats do not go back to his 2005 team, his ‘06 team was fifth in the league in hitting (.334 batting average) and third in pitching (5.09 ERA). In 2006, D&E’s Tobi Stoner turned in one of the WVIAC’s most impressive performances. He was third in the league (18th best in WVIAC history) in batting average at .465, with a slugging average of .803 and an on-base percentage of .521. He also stole 24 bases in 28 attempts that season and hit eight homers and 13 doubles. Meanwhile, he was also

fourth in the league in ERA with 2.90 and won eight games while leading the WVIAC in innings pitched. Stoner was selected by the New York Mets in the 16th round of the ‘06 MLB draft. He was the highest WVIAC player (out of seven) drafted in the past decade and made his first appearance for the big league team in 2009 as a pitcher. He has had brief stints in both ‘09 and ‘10 and has a sub 4.00 ERA at the major league level. Prior to taking the head coach job at D&E, he was the assistant coach at fellow WVIAC member University of Charleston for two years. Those two seasons with Brisbin on staff would become the two best in school history. Prior to his two years at UC, Brisbin was the head coach at NAIA Tabor College in KS. He earned that first baseball head coaching position when he was still in his mid-20’s. He got his first head coaching opportunity right out of college when he was named assistant baseball coach and head softball coach at Central Christian (junior) College in KS - jobs he held for two years before moving on. Brisbin was a standout baseball player at CCC, was the pitcher of the year and team captain as a sophomore before going to (then) NAIA Greenville College (IL) where he again was pitcher of the year and team captain. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at Greenville in 1995. Ryan is married to Angela and has a stepson, Hayden, who is ten years old and a son, Baird, who was born in the summer of 2012 . They are residents of Kerrville.

season preview

The Mountaineers look to bounce back from a tough seven win campaign with an experienced lineup that should prove a better product on the mound and at the plate. Schreiner will look towards 3B Marco Carreon (Sr/San Antonio, Texas), 2B Sam Pistrui (So/Katy, Texas), and SS Kyle Romaguera (So/Spring, Texas) to continue to anchor down the defense in the infield. As of this preview, the battle for 1B is still wide open with Seniors Brad Holmes (Sugar Land, Texas)/JC Kruczkowski (Austin, Texas) and Sophomore Trevor Wren (Cape Coral, Florida) battling it out for the starting nod. Freshmen Thomas Garcia (Pearland, Texas), Osman Quintana (Crosby, Texas), Kolby Kitchens (Center Point, Texas) and Sophomores Luis Salazar (San Antonio, Texas)/Lance Martin (Montgomery, Texas) provide depth in the infield. The Mountaineers will feature Senior Gio Datiz (Apopka, Flordia) in RF, Junior Connor Ver Schuur in CF, and battling for the leftfield spot, Freshmen Ben Benavides (El Paso, Texas)/Tye Ochoa (Temple, Texas). Schreiner will add talented outfield depth with Junior Kyle Baird (Grangerland, Texas), Freshmen Adam Brien (Live Oak, Texas) and Aaron Reed (Belton, Texas) Quinton Volovar (Spring, Texas) will continue to start for the

Mountaineers after a solid defensive performance in 2015. The backup position continues to be a battle between Senior Richie Laurin (Dallas, Texas), Sophomore Tyler Cook, and Freshman Tristain Longoria (New Braunfels, Texas). Senior RHPs Charlie Stewart (Leander, Texas) and Mikey Garcia (Pharr, Texas) will continue to ink innings for the Mountaineers. Coach Brisbin will also look towards Sophomores Dillon Brown (RHP/Spring, Texas), Montana Hammack (RHP/Bryan, Texas), Trevor Wren (RHP), and Payton Stanford (LHP/Troy, Texas) to throw quality innings after a year of experience. Several new faces will take the mound for Schreiner in 2016, such as Junior Kyle Baird (RHP/Grangerland, Texas), Freshmen Derek Gonzales (RHP/San Marcos, Texas), Derrick Vasquez (RHP/San Marcos, Texas), Brandon Tipton (RHP/Katy, Texas), and LHPs Caleb Allen (Katy, Texas) and Nick Martinez (San Antonio, Texas). The Mountaineers will open up on February 5th at Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas.

R.J. thomas R.J. Thomas is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Southwestern University baseball program. Thomas has guided the Pirates to back-toback Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournaments. He also has mentored 11 All-SCAC honorees in the past three seasons, including 2015 SCAC Player of the Year, Will Cates. Cates earned first-team ABCA/Rawlings and D3baseball.com All-West Region accolades, as well as honorable-mention All-America laurels. Southwestern has led the SCAC in stolen bases in each of the past two campaigns. The Pirates swiped 122 bags in 2015, while stealing 111 bases a year earlier. Thomas came to SU after reviving the Hendrix College baseball programn. His tenure was highlighted by a 2009 SCAC Tournament Championship and also was named the SCAC Coach of the year. In 2012, he guided Hendrix to a second-place finish in the SCAC Western Division and into the postseason once again. The Warriors were in the top four in the

conference in every offensive category, including leading the league with 25 triples. Coaching some of the conference’s best has become a standard for Thomas, posting 33 players in six years on the All-SCAC Team and at least one player on the All-West Region team in five of his six seasons. In addition to his coaching duties at Hendrix, Thomas led the fundraising effort for the Warrior Field project that aimed to increase seating by 111 percent for the start of the 2012 season. He also served as the athletic facilities coordinator, overseeing construction projects throughout the athletic department. Thomas is a 2004 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Thomas and his wife, Stephanie, live in Georgetown with their two daughters, Sophie and Isabel.

season preview

RJ Thomas is in his fourth year as the head coach of the Southwestern baseball team. Thomas has led the Pirates to back-to-back appearances in the SCAC Tournament. However, Thomas wonders what could have been if Southwestern was not bitten by the injury bug so many times a year ago. “Our expectations evolved as the year progressed,”Thomas said. “Our goal was to be playing our best baseball at the end. The Pirates, however, peaked in the last half of March. It started with a trip to Arizona, where Southwestern knocked off a pair of top-five teams (Cal Lutheran and St. Thomas). Upon returning to the state of Texas, the Bucs swept the conference-opening series at Dallas and claimed the first two games from Trinity. However, injuries began piling up. “The loss of Jeremy Rice really messed with our pitching staff,” Thomas said. “He was our Friday-night guy. Every time he had the ball, we felt like we had a chance to win.” In addition to Rice, the Pirates dealt with another starting pitcher, Jacob Kendra, missing action from time-to-time with a nagging injury. “Our pitching staff just wasn’t whole,”Thomas added. “We never really got our feet back under us.” After a summer to recruit and add depth to his roster, and a fall season to see his squad in limited action, Thomas is glowing on the subject of the 2016 edition of the Bucs. “This is the most talented team I have had since I started coaching,” Thomas said. Southwestern’s skipper points to the squad’s flexibility, balance on both sides of the plate and talent on the left side of the mound as strengths this year. The Bucs also welcome back their entire bullpen, including sophomore closer Riley Wayland, who posted eight saves and allowed runs in only four of his 18 appearances. Kendra is an important piece of Southwestern’s rotation. The junior right-hander, who was 5-1 in nine starts a year ago, is expected to start on the mound in conference openers. The Pirates also return all of their positional starters, though newcomers will challenge some for playing time. Will Cates, the 2015 SCAC Player of the Year and a 2016 preseason All-American, is back for his senior season as the Pirates’ everyday center fielder. Cates blistered opposing pitching staffs to the tune

of a .391 batting average, which was accompanied by 23 extra-base hits and a .633 slugging percentage. The Cy Fair, Texas, native also led the league with 51 runs scored and 31 stolen bases. “Cates is going to do what Cates does, which is get on base and cause havoc,”Thomas noted. “I’m excited for him because he is stronger this year.” Thomas also lauded the return of sophomore infielder Ethan Hallmark. “He is back and he is healthy,”Thomas said. “We have big expectations for him. He is a key to our team because of his skill level. He handles the bat well, runs bases well and knows the game.” Hallmark, who only played the first eight games of 2015, was leading the Pirates in every offensive category prior to his season-ending injury. Ethan Luna, a junior first baseman, will be back in the middle of the lineup after missing the end of last season due to injury. “We expected Hallmark and Luna to be in the middle of our lineup during the conference tournament last year,”Thomas said. “Having those two back this year will be big.” Thomas has stacked his 40-game schedule to match up with top teams. Southwestern will compete against five teams that advanced to the 2015 NCAA Tournament. “Strength of schedule is a big deal in Division III baseball,”Thomas commented. “All of our mid-week games are against the top teams in the American Southwest Conference. We play seven teams who are ranked or receiving votes in the D3baseball.com preseason Top 25 poll. I’ve always been a believer of playing the best to beat the best.” Thomas points to team chemistry and ability to stay healthy as main factors for this year’s Southwestern team to make its third consecutive appearance in the postseason. “We are athletic in every position,”Thomas said. “It’s the deepest team I have coached. We have upgraded defensively, and if our pitchers pound the zone we will have a chance to win every game this year. We have the ability to outscore everyone we play.” Courtesy of Southwestern Sports Information

Burnett has led the Bulldogs to postseason appearances in each of the last seven seasons, including a trip to the SCAC Championship final in TLU’s inaugural season in the SCAC in 2014. The Bulldogs were an NCAA Division III at-large selection to the NCAA DIII Baseball Championship in 2013. Burnett has compiled a 217-126 (.633) overall record during his prior eight seasons as the head coach of the Bulldogs. Burnett is third in career coaching wins at TLU, trailing only NAIA and TLU Hall of Famer Ray Katt and TLU Hall of Famer Bill Miller. The 2015 season saw TLU finish just behind Centenary (La.) for the regular-season title and entered the SCAC Championship as the No. 2 seed. The Bulldogs concluded the year with an overall record of 25-14 and a SCAC mark of 13-5. Division Championship and to a berth in the ASC Championship Tournament. In 2013, TLU third baseman Jennings Boothe was named the national NCAA Division III Gold Glove winner. Burnett joined the Texas Lutheran Athletics staff for the 1998-99 academic year and was former head coach (now AD) Bill Miller’s top assistant for nine seasons. Burnett was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2002 season. At the time of his hiring, at the conclusion of the 2007 season, Burnett said: “I am extremely honored to be able to follow in Bill Miller’s footsteps, and I look forward to the challenge of keeping the program at the same high level of national competitiveness that it has achieved for the past 15 years. The Bulldogs finished 2005 and 2006 with rankings in the Top 15 of the American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball Poll for NCAA Division III. The Bulldogs were ranked in the final Top 25 of the 2007 season. Burnett, a native of DeSoto, Texas, played two years of college baseball at Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, Texas. Cedar Valley is a part of the Dallas County Community College District. After his time at Cedar Valley, Burnett enrolled at Howard Payne University, where he played his final two years of collegiate baseball. season preview

Coming off a second-place, regular-season conference finish in 2015, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs look to re-load for 2016 with a roster that includes 14 new players in uniform. Of those 14 players receiving numbers for the varsity squad, 10 of those players are brand-new to the program. TLU and ninth-year head coach Greg Burnett must replace four position starters, pitching rotation starters Aaron Aleman (All-West Region selection, 1st Team All-SCAC) and Thomas Harwell (SCAC Honorable Mention), and 13 total letterman off a squad that produced a 25-14 overall record with a 14-6 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference mark. The Bulldogs lost three of its top five run producers from 2015. Klaus Bohrmann (29 RBI), Tony Gennusa (28 RBI) and Matt King (19 RBI) all completed their playing eligibility. (Bohrmann and Gennusa are now assistant coaches on the staff.) TLU does return RBI leader and SCAC All-Conference selection Justin Law (Houston/Temple JC), who hit .364 with 31 RBI, four home runs, nine doubles and two triples. The left-hand hitting first baseman posted a slugging percentage of .558 and an onbase percentage of .465. He walked a team-best 24 times. With Law at first and Keaton Bohrmann (San Antonio/Johnson), the Bulldogs have power and production at the corners. Bohrmann hit .318 with nine doubles, two triples and four home runs in 25 games. He slugged .551 with an on-base percentage of .354. Senior infielder Alejandro Gutierrez (Pharr/PSJA North) will start at either second, third or designated hitter. The versatile Gutierrez made 27 starts a year ago and hit .263 with 19 RBI, five doubles and six stolen bases. Another Bulldog with versatility, senior utility player Lincoln Baylor (Schertz/Clemens) will be key for the Bulldogs on the mound and in the field. He made 21 starts, primarily at second base, and hit .313 with eight runs scored, three doubles and 16 RBI. Baylor is slated to move into the starting pitching rotation in

2016 after a 2015 campaign that saw him make 12 appearances in relief and post an ERA of 2.33. He went 2-1 in relief, striking out 21 and walking just three in 27.0 innings of work. The Bulldogs posted a team ERA of 3.77 a year ago and tossed six complete games. In addition to Baylor, the Bulldogs return the services of junior right-hander Derek Cantu (3-1, 2.93 ERA), sophomore lefthander Aaron Milone (1-0, 4.24 ERA), sophomore right-hander Dylan Drgac (3-1, 6.14 ERA). All three pitched at least 23 innings in 2015. Nathan Malinovsky (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) also returns after an injury-shortened 2015. The 6-foot-3 redshirt freshman made three appearances last year before taking a medical redshirt. Cantu (George West/George West) started five games last season, but he will be in a back-end relief role this year. Sophomore left-hander Stephen Greenlees (Liberty Hill/Liberty Hill) also will figure in the Bulldogs’ late-inning options. Greenlees made six appearances in 2015. True freshman Cody Rimko, a right-hander from Lewisville (Lewisville), is competing for significant time on the staff. Head Coach Greg Burnett has led the Bulldogs to postseason appearances in each of the last seven seasons, including a trip to the SCAC Championship final in TLU’s inaugural season in the SCAC in 2014. The Bulldogs were an NCAA Division III at-large selection to the NCAA DIII Baseball Championship in 2013. Burnett has compiled a 217-126 (.633) overall record during his prior eight seasons as the head • Head Coach Greg coach of the Bulldogs. TIM scannell The 2015 campaign marked the 17th season of Tim Scannell as the Trinity Tigers head baseball coach. The 2015 season was the most successful in Trinity baseball’s NCAA Division III history. The Tigers earned their first trip to the NCAA Division III Championship, held at Appleton, Wisconsin. Trinity came within one game of advancing to the best-of-three finals series. Prior to the national championship, the Tigers qualified for the NCAA Regional Tournament for the 10th time, and sixth in a row. Trinity won the Regional with a perfect 4-0 record. On five earlier occasions, the Tigers advanced to the Regional final. Trinity completed the campaign with a 40-14 mark, tying the school record for wins in a season established in 2013. It marked the 14th time in 17 years Coach Scannell’s teams had produced a 30plus wins season. The American Baseball Coaches Association honored Coach Scannell’s achievements by electing him the 2015 ABCA/Diamond NCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year. Coach Scannell, the winningest Trinity baseball coach in history, has amassed a record of 558-222 since taking over as head coach in 1999. season preview

The Trinity Tigers produced their best season as members of the NCAA Division III, in the 2015 campaign. Trinity advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship for the first time, and came within one game of moving on to the best-of-three finals series. The Tigers, who finished third in the nation, completed the year with a 40-14 record, tying a school mark for victories in a season. The good news is that Head Coach Tim Scannell will have the services of an All-American, five All-Region Players, and eight All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honorees for the 2016 season. Adding to the good news is the fact that the Tigers return their top seven hitters, and three key members of the pitching staff. The veterans and newcomers will open the season February 1214 at the Clements Fluid Classic, to be held at the University of Texas-Tyler. This year’s edition of Tiger baseball is ranked as high as No. 7 in the nation, by the D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Poll. “We are experienced and return our entire lineup from last year,” said Coach Scannell, entering his 18th season at the Tigers helm. “We came out of the gate and lost in the second game at the SCAC Tournament, and were on the verge of elimination. They had their classic backs against the wall, and they fought like heck at Playoffs and College World Series time, and made a great run. The Tigers traveled to Shreveport, Louisiana, for the SCAC Tournament, hosted by top-seeded Centenary College. Trinity had to beat Centenary twice in the final day to win the championship. The Tigers first beat the Gents 6-4, and run-ruled their opponent 10-0 as Trinity captured its ninth SCAC Championship under Coach Scannell’s leadership. The conference title earned the Tigers a trip to the NCAA Regional for the sixth consecutive year, and the 10th overall. This time, the tournament was held at UT-Tyler. Trinity went undefeated at 4-0 in the regional event. Then came the trip to the mecca of Division III baseball, Appleton, Wisconsin. In the NCAA Tournament opening game, the Tigers were edged 9-7 by Emory (GA) University. But Trinity stormed back to defeat Salisbury (MD) University 9-1, and then took out Emory 10-1. The Tigers earned a convincing 16-6 victory over the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, but the eventual NCAA finalists eliminated Trinity by a score of 10-7. Current seniors Drew Butler and Connor Moore were named to the D3baseball.com and NCAA All-Tournament Teams. Honored by his peers, Coach Scannell was elected the 2015 American Baseball Coaches Association/Diamond NCAA Division III West Region Coach of the Year. He also was named the D3baseball.com West Region Coach of the Year, Senior Ryan Gray leads the Tigers returning pitching corps. Gray was elected to the 2016 D3baseball.com Preseason All-America First Team. Last season, Gray was selected for the . D3baseball.com All-America First Team, to the organization’s All-West Region Team, and to the American Baseball Coaches Association/ Rawlings All-West Region Second Team. The talented left-hander sported a perfect 8-0 record - with two saves - over 14 appearances and 67.2 innings of work. Gray, an All-SCAC First Team recipient, had an ERA of 2.00, and struck out 75 batters. Senior left-hander Michael Walker recorded a 6-4 mark, with a 4.13 ERA. Walker, who also picked up a save, pitched 65.1 innings and fanned 52 players. Teddy Turner, a senior right-handed pitcher, went 3-2 on the season, and

amassed four saves in the process. Turner posted a 2.55 ERA over 35.1 innings, with 36 K’s. Standouts Matt Tindall, Zack Speer, Trent Rape, and Nick Griffith graduated in May 2015. As a unit, Tiger pitchers had an ERA of 3.02. On the offensive side, senior second baseman Colin Serkowski was named to the ABCA All-West Region and D3baseball.com First Teams, along with the All-SCAC First Team. Serkowski led the Tigers with 50 runs, and batted .335. Senior outfielder Jeremy Wolf was a D3baseball.com First Team honoree, as well as making the ABCA All-Region Second Team, and the All-SCAC First Team. Wolf was second in the team’s batting average, at .390, while scoring 45 runs, driving in 44, and smacking six home runs. Butler, a catcher, made the ABCA All-Region Second Team and the All-SCAC First Team. He led the squad in batting with a .398 average, and was the leader in RBI, with 55. Butler scored 35 runs and swatted four round-trippers. Moore was elected to the ABCA All-Region Third Team and All-SCAC First Team as a shortstop. He was third in team batting, at ,358, and scored 48 runs, while notching 29 RBI. Senior outfielder Austin Singer received All-SCAC First Team accolades. Singer led the Tigers with nine home runs, and batted .299. He also had 45 RBI and scored 44 runs. Nick Jewett, a senior first baseman, was an All-SCAC Honorable Mention recipient. Jewett posted a batting average of .305, while getting 28 RBI, 36 runs, and three homers. Carter McEachern, a senior third baseman, also made the All-SCAC Honorable Mention Team. McEachern batted .328, with 42 runs, 25 RBI, and a home run. The Tigers hit .328 and scored 404 runs, and average of 7.5 per game. Opponents batted .227 and were limited to 200 runs, for a 3.7 runs-per-game average. “We will have a balanced offense,” said Coach Scannell, “because we have left-handed hitting and right-handed hitting. We have some speed and power. We will have a strong defense, and will be very good in the infield. I think we have some talent in this mix of players.” A group of promising newcomers are now Trinity Tigers. Some of the players to watch are right-handed pitchers Sean Cubley of Houston, Texas (Clear Lake High School);Case Williams of Fort Worth, Texas (Boswell High School); Hold Nix of Atascadero, California (Atascadero High School); Ian Hussian of Minneapolis, Minnesota (Southwest High School); and Trevor Johnson of Centennial, Colorado (Arapahoe High School). A left-hander joining the pitching staff is Andrew Hoffman of Houston, Texas (Lamar High School). A new infielder is Logan Morrison of Temecula, California (Great Oak High School); and an outfielder is Jake Martin of Edmond, Oklahoma (Santa Fe High School). “The newcomers are talented,” said Assistant Coach J.C. Bunch. “We split up the fall non-traditional season based on starters vs. the young guys, and the young guys won more games than the starters. We also have an experienced lineup that got us to the World Series. They know how to win.” The Tigers open their home schedule February 19-20 by hosting the University of Texas-Dallas.
