Watch the shocking video here! Unfortunately, Janelle couldn’t exactly get her full point across, because she was cut off by a TODAY anchor right in the middle of her message! “God Bless America,” she said after the powerful performance. “God bless all the lives lost to police brutality. We want white America to know that we stand tall today. We want black America to know we stand tall today. We all not be silenced!” She kept going after that, but her words are inaudible, as a news anchor began speaking over the speech. Yikes!

Creativity at His Fingertips Liam Farrell, Founding Partner and Creative Director, Unisono

H

e is the creative mind behind Unisono, one of the leading advertising agencies in Bahrain and GCC. Sabaya has an enlightening chat with Liam Farrell, the young and dynamic founding partner and Creative Director of the company.

Tell us briefly about yourself: where you were born and raised, any special memories of childhood: I was born in Matlock, Derbyshire, UK. Home to nothing famous other than its love of motorcycling. My most special memories came from my childhood in the south west of England. This is where I grew up, came of age, fell in love and found out about the world. This was also the time and place when I was first introduced to the concept of typography. Before then, I had no consciousness about people designing with or creating typeface designs. What is your educational and professional background? I studied Art and Design till A Level in the UK before being accepted to do a foundation diploma in Art & Design. I then chose to take about 7 years out of higher education and explore my love of music, by working in the industry all over the north of England. After a long and rather unproductive time working in clubs and

14

SEPTEMBER 2015

the recording business, I left the world of work and returned to higher education. I applied to a few colleges and was accepted to my design degree course at Salford University. I left with first class honors and started working in the industry in an agency in Liverpool. Was advertising your calling? How and when did Unisono come about? From my earliest memories, I was always drawing something. Mostly war scenes featuring matchstick men, matchstick tanks and matchstick warships. I was quite into the whole ‘war thing’ until I joined the army cadets, at which point my misty eyed view of military life was brought abruptly into focus. I realized I was quite at odds with the ‘unquestioning acceptance’ mentality of the army. As someone predisposed to asking ‘why?’, I found I was ill-suited to it. During and after my degree, I worked for a few agencies both in-house and as a freelancer before I started my first agency aged 28. This was where the seed of our strategic approach was cultivated. When I was designing a brochure, my partner asked my “why” I was designing it. It took a while for the question to sink in but then ‘boom’, it dawned on me how we designers have a tendency to just design stuff without ever thinking about the business case for it. This changed my thinking totally and set us

on a course for the ‘strategy first’ creative business that is Unisono. It took me leaving the UK and coming to Bahrain before we started Unisono, our second agency. I was working for Saatchi & Saatchi but found their approach to be at odds with my new-found approach. Saatchi never did any strategic thinking that was centrered on the client’s business issues. I figured we should start an agency where we helped clients get their business strategy right so they could make the best use of their investment in creativity. My partner and I knew creativity was a powerful business tool and wonderful at solving problems if you get the strategy right before the creativity starts. What were the initial challenges that you faced in establishing Unisono and how did you overcome them? Our initial challenge was the same as all new companies; finding clients. But word soon got around that we did things differently, more strategically, and things grew from there. We worked on a few branding projects and word of mouth soon spread before long we were winning international awards for our work rebranding Bahrain’s largest insurer, BNI (we also did BNH’s brand). The next growth issue was finance. In 2009, we landed what was probably the biggest account in Bahrain’s history, to

A Class Apart launch STC’s new telecom brand and yet getting financial support to help in the immediate growth phase was not easy. By thinking like an entrepreneur and bootstrapping our growth, we overcame the issue. Finally, when we no longer needed the finance our bank said they would lend it to us. Guess you shouldn’t write a business plan here that is overly reliant on support from your bank. How would you define creative thinking? Creative thinking is being able to think of things that did not exist before. Create is from the Latin 'creare', meaning to ‘bring into existence’. Creative thinking is just the starting point in an often-very long and involved process towards realization of your thoughts into physical or digital creations. One of the main issues agencies face is a client not affording them enough time to think creatively and execute with a degree of craftsmanship. Clients want agencies to ‘borrow’ ideas and it's shameful that too many ‘creative’ people are willing to work this way. Unisono’s philosophy requires us to add something valid to the global creative narrative; else we are not contributing to society and should probably just work in another industry. Do you think an individual can acquire or enhance his creative skills through formal training? Emphatic ‘yes’. I was interviewing a young Bahraini designer just the other day and spent 15 minutes discussing just the cover page of her portfolio. This first page contained only her name and the word ‘Portfolio’. From deconstructing her page I could tell she had an eye for good aesthetics but she had not used any proportioning in the design. A good eye can help you most of the way, but only formal training in a good creative process and the underlying rules of proportion, form and colour will help you to achieve the level of finish and brilliance world class creative minds display. The formal training these days can be from skillshare.com or Lynda.com. You don’t have to go to school or even read a book. I can’t think of one creative discipline where study into the essential techniques would not improve your talent. Even now I undertake study every week on some new technique. I don’t think I will cease learning until my brain stops functioning. You have recently won thirteen awards from the Transform Awards Mena. What unique qualities of your company do you attribute this grand achievement to?

It’s about working with clients who appreciate and respect the process. We politely turn down the ‘present us a logo’ opportunities. It’s not how we work. It is not strategic and if it is not solving a well-defined problem, it is only likely to add to the issues. We cannot exist let alone win awards without clients. So selecting to work with only those companies who respect our process is the foundation of our long running success and increasingly wellpopulated trophy cabinet. Our process has been developed from techniques used by world-class branding strategists, honed by business analysts and enhanced by philosophers. We start by first deconstructing the real business issues at the heart of a company but end up creating work that is driven by perception, feeling and belief. These considerations inform the visualization and messaging of the brand and, when done well and in concert with a visionary client, result in brilliant work that can then be used to create compelling communication. Finally, we present these case studies to judges from international award shows and they award us as they deem fit. We are probably the most highly awarded branding agency in the region and have won Rebrand and Transform combined more than any other agency in the MENA area. While awards don’t tell you much about an agency, they do tell you one thing: that the agency is competitive and seeks to work at the top of the game. Which campaign/project that you worked on in your entire professional life was the most creatively stimulating/satisfying to you personally? Why?

This is a really hard one to answer beyond saying “the last one”. Your work gets better and better the more lessons you learn, so each project is a chance to elevate your craft and at Unisono we see ourselves as craftspeople. In terms of successes though, winning both the VIVA and then the Batelco accounts were highlights. These are both major clients for any agency. So to have won both in succession and to do such transformative work for both has been amazing. Similarly, winning three Golds with Batelco at the 2015 Transform Awards was a night I’ll always remember. You have worked with young creative minds over the years. Have you noticed any palpable difference in their creativity/ thought processes with the increasing advancement and domination of technology? When I started in this industry it was the dawn of the Apple Mac so I have always used technology in my work and I am technology-obsessive too. The thing I have noticed about social media though and the mobile mediated world is how bad our memories are these days. This is worrisome so I am trying to reverse it and put down the phone more and more. What is your message to aspiring creative professionals? Do what you can to get into the industry get an internship, get a placement, do what you can to get your foot in the door; then work to make yourself indispensible. Then you will find that job. But only do this if you are willing to work your heart out, there are many easier ways to make a living than the creative industry but few that are so satisfying. SEPTEMBER 2015

Creating Visual Magic

Her love of religion combines with her artistic vision to create visual splendours through divine designs. Sabaya speaks to Sumaya Abdulghani to know more about her creative trysts with the visual media.

S

umaya Abdulghani is a Bahraini artist who specializes in collage, photography and mixed media. She strives to introduce Islam’s theological and philosophical beauty to her audience, by developing delicate, rhythmic and organic patterns in her art, attempting to mirror nature’s simplicity. The enlightening nature of the religion acts as a strong propellant in her art and practice. She believes in shared values present across various religions, such as morality and purity, and is interested in developing concepts related to her research on such. Were you inclined towards arts/visual media right from the beginning? Art has been in my life since I was a child. I always loved art and art classes were my favourite. But I took it seriously only a few years ago. Before that it was just a hobby. Around 1998, I started looking at it as a

16

SEPTEMBER 2015

Art-Spect career. Thereafter, I intensively attended several workshops since then so much so that there were days when I attended one workshop in the morning and another in the evening! I have always appreciated art and artists, and have admired them all my life. Of all the art forms, why have you chosen collage, photography and mixed media? I have chosen these three forms of arts to pursue as I am really good at these three things; These three art forms stimulate my creativity the most. How did the ides of combining religious philosophy with arts occur to you? Tell us in brief about your first project regarding this. This is the most interesting question to me! Actually my religion and art are the two things that I am most passionate about. They are like assets in my life. There is an interesting story related to this. I had been a member of a Quran club for over 10 years now. A few years ago, our mentor asked us to start spreading the word of what we are learning. I went back home thinking. ‘If I have to spread the word, I have to spread it the way I know best, and the way I know best is art! Art is what I know best and I am good at it. From then I started combining art and religion in my works. My first project was based upon what religion means to me. To me, religion is about ‘Ahlaq’ or ethics, mainly. It is about work and productivity. I also wanted to show people through my work what Islam is all about. I believe that these basic principles of ethics are common to all religion: Islam, Hinduism, Christianity, and so on. Good ethics and sincere work is revered across religions and communities. In the Quran, there are so many phrases about work and ethics. I wanted to depict these values through my work in order to remind people of the principles related to these that people today do not practice or remember any more. My first project was Almeezan and that is how my tryst with religion began. Tell us in details about your project Almeezan. This artwork started as an idea inspired by the Quran club I am a part of. As a part of our collective activities, we were asked to create a project about afterlife. I was then part of a group that was asked to symbolize and perform the divine concept of the scale. At first, we created a film with the assistance of Director Hind Fakhro. Then we developed a friendly game. On the night of the preview of the film, we asked the group members to walk in a

dark alley-way lit only with lanterns. Next to each lantern, we placed small pebbles wrapped with foil paper. We asked each participant to collect five stones and ace them in a bag without unwrapping them. When the film was shown, each member was then asked to unwrap the pebbles and read what was scribbled on the stones. Each stone had either a good deed (a smile, charity, kind words, etc. ) , or bad deeds ( a lie, swearing, smearing, etc.) written on it. For each good deed, 2 points were added, and for each bad one 2 were subtracted. The total was calculated from 10, those who got 0 were saved from Hell, those who got more than 0 were sent to the symbolic Heaven and who had a negative or minus mark would end up in symbolic Hell. The project did not end there. It stayed with me until I developed it into an artwork. I wanted the message to reach more audience, and to show Islam as it really is, a religion that encourages mercy and compassion. My research into the subject of scale made me realize that what tops the scale are almost always good manners; a fact that is even absent from the minds of most people. I photographed the stones, and turned them into designs that were printed into tiles and included them with a short film that illustrates the idea with more clarity.

Do you think there is a difference in the messages that can be conveyed through collage, photography and visual media? How and why? I really like this question. There is no difference in the message. It could all be the same. Elaborating on this can take hours but I shall try to put it as simply as possible. The difference is not in the message but in the audience and the speed with which the message can be conveyed through the respective media. Let’s say that the visual media/movie/photography audiences are wider than those of mixed media, painting or collage----- the latter being little pockets of niche audiences. Well, naturally, messages through the visual media/ movies, etc., can thereby reach out to larger number of people more quickly than those through the other forms of art, I believe. The message could be the same. Again, the time of production varies across these media of art form. I can click a photo at this instant and send it to everyone across the globe—the message will be conveyed, and so effectively too. It can change reactions almost immediately too. Painting for that matter, will take way much longer a time and for people to understand the message conveyed they would probably need to read the article/caption that I write for that particular piece of work. The difference is not in the message but the way it reaches the audience. So basically, it is a function of a lot of factors: the message, the audience, the timings, how do you want to convey it, who you are targeting. And most importantly, time—do you want people to read it right now and the audience-locals, global, for certain sectors, for certain people—all these things matter a lot. What is your message to aspiring artists? Learn, produce and stay humble.

Which are the various exhibitions that you have participated in?  Islamopolitan (an ongoing touring exhibition of collective designs in Sharjah, Istanbul and recently in Italy)  Vantage (A group show of photomontage, collage, mixed media, and audio)  The Post Oriental Odyssey show at the Mine in Dubai.

The Broken Dreams Ali Makki *Amylian*

Sukaina got married two years ago, but it was an unfortunate marriage; her husband suffered lovesickness. 18

SEPTEMBER 2015

I

live in a run-down house in a small village, the windows are broken and it’s cold in winter and hot in summer. The wooden, squeaky doors are halfbroken and would always open and close with violent thuds. The walls are cracked; the outer ones have all kinds of political scribbles on them. Anyone who has something to say, the wall can be his closest friend. Crumbling furniture and adornments are scattered here and there. There is brightness that is absent in this house, and by its absence, darkness prevails. These plaintive thoughts spiraled wildly

through Sukaina’s mind, complaining. From one night to the next, the foul smell from the factories on the outskirts of the village invades my sacred house. My nights become unbearable. I can’t stand living here anymore, but as a wife, I am expected to follow the rules of the “powerful will”; I can›t speak freely! But, I love him… Sukaina got married two years ago, but it was an unfortunate marriage; her husband suffered lovesickness. He kept mentioning a girl named Farah in their conversations and it made her uncomfortable. One day, he left without a trace and no one knew where

Story Time he went. He simply vanished. Some say he had been kidnaped, others said he ran away from his wife with his mistress. The feeling of helplessness ruined her quiet face. How typical of men in this part of the world. Not the slightest light of hope. She would often talk to herself in the privacy of her own mind, contemplating the situations. All she had to do was waiting. Her neighbor, an old woman, had no ability of writing or reading, but possessed the talent of gossiping. There, on her gloomy face, was a map drawn delicately by the passing of time. She used to visit her from time to time to comfort her and she would often bring her a box of chocolate, or ice-cream. Her house was two minutes away from Sukaina’s. “Sukaina, your husband is good-fornothing they say,” she started without taking permission to talk. “People often say he’s calm and all, but others, people I trust, say he’s a flirt and hangs a lot with girls, beautiful ones that is.” “No, Aunt Ruqaia. People would say all kinds of things just to see dreams shattered. It fills them with peace for some reasons. I don›t believe it. I still believe he's lost somewhere and the police promised they would find him within few days. What a hopeless person like me can do? Nothing, but wait! That’s all I can do.” Sukaina pretended to be strong in front of Aunt Ruqaia who noticed Sukaina's unresolved heart wavering like a flag, unable to move from where it is attached. “Do you think he still loves you?” Asked Aunt Ruqaia. The question was intended to trigger something within Sukaina whose hand was cold. She had been doing laundry in the small hall where the cheap washing machine was. She said nothing, but sipped her coffee in silence. She remembered that what bothered her most was the fact that he didn’t even glance at the spring of her sweet-colored eyes when he was with her as if he was devoid of life. Was it but a look that could keep dreams open and going? She clumped up her lips when she felt he was dodging her existence because of that girl Farah. Still, she remembered how she kept watching over him. "I raised him again". He talked to me of his boyhood one day, how he used to play in mud, get drenched in the rain in a cold day of February, or collect its drops in a bucket and drink it to bring him good fortune and luck, eat portions of the sand when he was angry with something and how his mother scolded and beat him for doing so. His stories were unbelievably fascinating…Why would he leave me? I

want to believe he’s been kidnapped and not laying with another girl… The thoughts swept Sukaina’s mind and sense of time. One can only imagine The Great Wave painted by Katsushika Hokusai backed up my Mount Fuji and all other natural forces, threatening the poor people on boats. The waves holding still and motionless like a giant hand of a colossus found in one of the videogames kids play these days. Sadness welled up inside Sukaina. Aunt Ruqaia insisted that she should get an answer.

“Well, I love him; and what is a man, but a miserable pile of secrets as one whose name I can’t remember said once. He has his secrets.“ “And he left you. In Bahrain, men would often forget about their dreams. You know why? Not because they lack the dream itself, but they like the power to keep going because they keep secrets instead of sharing. Thank God I share everything with my husband and now he’s all good. Can’t couples be open books with each other nowadays? Ptff!” Aunt Ruqaia inquired out of curiosity. Her words kept striking Sukaina like dagger in the stomach. She carried on, “Well, think about it? You’re a person, too and you have your needs. A woman can be strong, too, with or without a man anyway.” Sukaina sighed. “So what am I to do?” “It’s simple. Take a look at his closet and drawers. Throw away his clothes on the streets. Take his videogames and CDs and crush them. In a slow motion, feel the strings of his instruments fade in the garbage. Just take away everything. His pictures, pants, keys, games, snacks, dumbbells, and whatever he feels it makes him a man. After all, isn’t that every girl’s dream? To step on her husband's Xbox or these toys they play with like a queen. It’s your life, you control it!” “I do?” “Now eat your ice-cream.” She left. The next day, people gathered around Sukaina’s house to collect thrown stuff and broken dreams.

Red Carpet Writes Back

While the fashion divas walked the red carpet at the 2015 Teen Choice Awards, the Sabaya fashion police picked up her binoculars to find out the best and the worst dressed ones!

Nina Dobrev

Nina Dobrev looked beautiful in this Zuhair Murad Resort 2016 embellished dress. However, our first thought was “this is Grammys dress! Wish she’d opted for something with more summer in it! Aside from that, the look was styled perfectly with a rose-gold Rodo clutch and Tamara Mellon ‘Frontline’ sandals.

Rowan Blanchard

The young actress, who appears to be challenging Kiernan Shipka in the best dressed teen style stakes, put forth yet another look which ranked highly on the adorability meter. Wearing her second Giamba Resort 2016 frock, it’s amazing how this sophisticated yet girlie 60’s-inspired A-line silhouette is elevated by way of luxurious fabrication and playful fringe detailing.Though we can’t say the sneakers would be our first choice, but it undeniably turned out to be a masterstroke, keeping the look fresh and youthful.

Emma Roberts

The tantalizing prints in a summery ’70s-inspired colour palette lent a playful allure to Emma’s sleek fitted Peter Pilotto Resort 2016 dress. While Emma was one of the few to nail her look from head-to-toe, a part of me wishes this dress was much shorter.

Keke Palmer

Keke Palmer wore a colour-block Giulietta Resort 2016 dress styled with complementary accessories including an Edie Parker clutch and Stuart Weitzman ‘Nudist’ sandals. While the look is undeniably alluring, youthful and fun, we’re not a fan of the hair. Not only do we get the feeling that it ages her, but we also think the look would’ve felt fresher with a ponytail. The choker is also a bit of a head scratcher.

Victoria Justice

While Hervé Léger by Max Azria dresses are often considered dated, we loved the playful, signature figuresculpting piece Victoria Justice carried around accented with fringe aplenty to create movement. Augmented with gold accessories, including an Amanda Pearl clutch and Jimmy Choo ‘Lance’ sandals, this was surprisingly one of the stand out look on the night.

Sarah Hyland

The ‘Modern Family’ star’s feminine and playful side came out to play wearing this Christian Siriano Resort 2015 crop top and prettily poised shorts. This was a visionary summer offering not only thanks to the style, but also due to the lemon-hue plus fuss-free styling helped enhance Sarah’s look.

be the same shape or size or colour of some model’s body to be recognized as being beautiful. The size zero trend promotes an unhealthy obsession with skinny being hot. It has girls everywhere starving themselves or getting eating disorders just to fit in. It has to stop. Embrace yourself for being you. There’s so much beauty in yourself. If you ask me, personally, I don’t believe

Proprietor, Out of the Box

I would not like to get into the size debate - designers have the right to opt for any size they wish- after all they need good ‘hangers’ to walk the ramp and showcase their designs. Banning size 0 is in fact discriminating them! What we need to ensure is that we instill in our youngsters self esteem and allow them to grow up to be confident and responsible.Their self worth should not be linked to their physical appearance/ body size. They need to learn to accept and love their bodies. There will be plenty of issues which will crop up other than body size which we could think of as affecting a child’s well being, Like in the case of using size 0 models–the concern is encouraging unhealthy eating habits in youngsters. But if we have a confident child-he/ she will not take this personally but will work towards attaining a body to please herself. Banning size 0 is not the solution! The children we raise need to have a realistic understanding of their strengths and weaknesses–flaunting their strengths, accepting their weaknesses and working on it. But acceptance and love for self is important.

that zero size is the ideal size. I think a woman should be more than just a size labelled on to her. To me, a woman with curves is beautiful. There is nothing more appealing than a woman who loves herself and values herself but lately I have noticed girls take the zero size thing way too seriously and end up with anorexia. Beauty

Hair Style to Suit Your Face

We all agree that hair is a key element contributing to the beauty of a face. It is not only important to take care of your hair regularly, but also important that you know which hair-cuts to go for in order to enhance your beauty. Here’s how! 26

SEPTEMBER 2015

A

bad hair-cut or hair style can completely ruin your look. So it is very important to first identify the shape of your face and then know which haircuts are suitable for that shape. The hair cut should accentuate or highlight the best aspects of your face and underplay the notso-pleasant parts.

Beauty Know your face shape and hairstyles that will work best

Avoid Avoid blunt bobs, especially sitting at chin length with straight heavy bangs as this will accentuate your jaw line and squareness. Middle parts with solid bangs can also work against you.

Oval shape Characteristics:  Curvilinear shape  Length is equal to one and a half times width  The forehead and jaw are the same width

Heart Shape

Characteristics:  Wide at the forehead and cheekbones.  Narrow at the jawline.

What to Go for Hairstyles that render height and fullness to the crown creating the illusion of a narrower face shape. Longer hairstyles or ones that are kept close to the cheeks with no width will look better. Middle parts are great for creating the illusion of narrow length. Even an uneven cut with mix of lengths will give

What to go for Any shape and style, whether it's short, long, layered or bobbed. A collarbonegrazing bob with side-swept bangs helps break up a long face and add softness. The only thing to consider with an oval face shape is what part of your face you want to accentuate. This is where you can get creative with bangs or how you style your hair every day. Cutting straight bangs across the brow line can break up the length by creating the illusion of width Avoid Do not choose hairstyles that hang in your face or eyes or hairstyles that just cover over your beautiful face shape.

Round Shape

Characteristics:  Circular shaped  Length is approximately equal to width

Avoid Hairstyles that add volume through the sides such as chin length bob cuts, straight or kicking out in design. Side parts and heavy straight across bangs create a wider shorter shape.

Square Shape

Characteristics:  Strong and broad forehead  Angular jaw What to Go for Wispy forward falling hair onto your face will soften your jaw line. Try waves from the ears down, which helps obscure any severity in the jawline. Wearing bangs swept over to one side will create diagonal movement to minimize square shapes. Short to medium length hair will also suit you, especially if the style is rounded in shape or has wispy ends. Styles with height at the crown will also work in your favor.

What to Go for Hairstyles up to the chin and of any shape. If bangs are wanted make sure that they are side-swept bangs not straight across as blunt cut bangs will only make your face shape shorter and wider. Wispy layers with shoulder-length cuts that kick out will also work very well. Try a deep side part to accentuate your eyes. Height on top will work but only if they belong to shoulder length or longer hairstyles. Avoid Short, full hairstyles like slicked back looks that emphasize your upper face. Short styles with heavy straight across bangs that create an upside down triangular shape are best avoided too. SEPTEMBER 2015

Detoxify Into a Healthier You

If you feel drained out, sluggish, and hopeless about curing body aches, acnes, or simply losing weight, then there is just one solution that you need. Detoxification. Just as our houses, offices, places of worship need to be cleaned of all dirt and clutter, our body needs periodic cleansing off all toxins to remain healthy. 28

SEPTEMBER 2015

D

etoxification is an essential part of living healthily. It includes cleansing, resting and nourishing the body from inside. A good detoxification programme usually includes the following:  Resting the organs through fasting;  Stimulating the liver to drive toxins from the body;  Promoting elimination through the intestines, kidneys and skin;  Improving circulation of the blood; and  Refueling the body with healthy nutrients.

Although there are several clinical methods of detoxifying the body, there are various simpler ways of getting rid of toxins from your body at home.

General ways to detoxify

Eat plenty of fiber, including brown rice and organically-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. Beets, radishes, artichokes, cabbage, broccoli, spirulina, chlorella, and seaweed are excellent detoxifying foods. Protect and cleanse the liver by taking herbs such as dandelion root, burdock and milk thistle, and drinking green tea. Take vitamin C, which helps the body produce glutathione, a liver compound that

Health drives away toxins. Drink at least two litres of water a day. Breathe deeply to allow oxygen to circulate more completely through your system. Transform stress by emphasizing positive emotions. Practice hydrotherapy by taking a very hot shower for five minutes, allowing the water to run on your back. Follow with cold water for 30 seconds. Do this three times, and then get into bed for 30 minutes. Sweat in a sauna so your body can eliminate wastes through perspiration. Dry-brush your skin or try detox foot spas/foot baths to remove toxins through your pores. Special brushes are available at natural products stores. An hours exercise, be it yoga or simple cardio is very effective in detoxification. Try Qigong, a martial-arts based exercise system that includes exercises specifically for detoxifying or cleansing, as well as many other exercises with specific health benefits.

Here’s a quick one-day detox plan to kick start into the world of detoxification:

 Wake up in the morning and have a glass of warm water with lime juice to flush out toxins from your body.  Warm up your body with a short and simple workout or an energizing yoga.  Break your fast with a fruit smoothie or a vegetable juice.  For your mid-morning snack, have a cup of green tea that will boost your metabolism further.  If you sit at the desk largely for work, take a break every 20 minutes to go for a short walk around the place.  Go for a sauna to flush out the unwanted toxins from your body.  For lunch, drink a vegetable soup with a fiber rich cabbage salad and a portion of lean meat.  Try a fresh fruit juice for your afternoon snack.  For dinner, have a portion of grilled fish with a salad.  Give yourself a relaxing shower and enough time for a good night’s rest. Remember good sleep and stress management is vital to an effective detoxification. If you have any health-related query, please do write to us Editor@sabayamag. com. We will soon get back to you with our expert advice.

Restaurant Review

uncheons between work and over business meetings never got more refreshing than this! Rasoi, Gulf Hotel’s premier Indian restaurant, packs the taste of India into pretty little tiffin carriers to spice up your business lunch with exotic delicacies from India! What does a ‘business lunch’ conjure in your mind? A buffet spread mostly continental with a few Chinese dishes on the sides? Have you heard of an Indian business lunch? Well, when I was invited to try out the business lunch at Gulf Hotel’s Indian restaurant Rasoi, I was quite intrigued about what I was going to be served. Gulf Hotel’s warm hospitality was palpable from the moment I stepped into the property with a friend. We were very cordially received by the Hotel’s Marketing and Communication Manager, Mr Ryan Abdincula who introduced us to his team of chefs at the Rasoi restaurant and gave me a brief history of the restaurant and an overview of the kind of business lunch that we were to be served that day. ‘Rasoi by Vineet’ as the restaurant is best known as is the first fine-dining restaurant in Bahrain operated by a Michelin starred chef. Renowned chef-restaurateur Vineet Bhatia, three times awarded a Michelin star had designed the restaurant to take his guests on a delectable Michelin-style journey into the world of contemporary Indian cuisine. As we entered the restaurant, the soothing Indian ambience of the restaurant created by the soft notes of the Indian classical instrumental music was truly rejuvenating. The dignified and innovative precision in the décor of the restaurant provides a modern interpretation of traditional Indian vibrant colours, imaginative artworks and sparkling crystals create a dramatic interior. One travels geographical boundaries into the land of rich cultural heritage and diversity. We also had a sneak peek into the showkitchen at the corner which is the seat of all the drama there. Rasoi By Vineet caters for 130 covers for lunch and dinner and features a private Chef’s Table dining room.

We were welcomed by the team of chefs there, including Chef Ashok. He explained to us how the ‘tiffin Lunch’ is a unique concept of presenting a rich 3-course lunch in a typical Indian ‘tiffin carrier’ which is used to carry food from home to work. The primary intention therefore is to make people feel at home as they grab a quick bite on a busy day. There are five set menus of the tiffin lunch to ensure that a regular guest is adequately engaged in the meal for all the five days of the week. For a drink, I chose to have a rose mohito, a signature mocktail of the restaurant. The unique punch of the aromatic drink was completely revitalising. My dining partner chose to go vegetarian and so for starters, while she was served a vegetarian kebab platter of wild mushroom seekh and Almond subz tikka, I dug into a mouth-watering platter of shammi kebab and tandoori fish tikka. This was followed by the main courses of delightful items served in generous portions. The soft butter naans, the peas puloao and the jeera rice were adequately appetizing to accompany the various side dishes. The pomegranate raita, the Chicken chettinad and the paneer makhni were to write home about completely. This was followed by fascinating deserts. While I savoured every bit of the Gulabjamun blueberry basundi, cardamom foam, my friend enjoyed the dainty flavours of Mango cheesecake, fresh mango, star anise crumble. As the finish is always the crown, our sweet tooth was given a different kind of high with the signature dessert called the ‘chocolate cravings’—an assortment of chocolate delicacies that range from chocolate filled

samosas, chocolate milk, jiggery sweet dipped in white chocolate, and so on. Priced at BD 11 without the desert, and at BD 14 with it, the Tiffin Lunch at Gulf Hotel is the first ever Indian business lunch concept that presents traditional Indian food of both North and South India. So next time you need to book yourself a quick lunch between meetings, do not forget to step into Rasoi for a truly gourmet experience!

Mclaren Sports Series Enters Pre-Production phase ahead of Global Launch  Most attainable McLaren model range commences final stage ahead of full production  Pre-production phase will ensure the highest levels of quality for the first models to join the Sports Series family: the 570S Coupé and 540C Coupé  Short video showing the Sports Series testing in extreme conditions can be viewed and embedded at: www. youtube.com/McLarenAutomotiveTV The countdown to the launch this autumn of the most attainable McLaren road car project yet, the Sports Series, continues with the start of the pre-production phase within the stateof-the-art McLaren Production Centre in Woking, England. This milestone marks the final stage in the development programme ahead of the global roll-out of the 570S Coupé; the first model to be launched in the McLaren Sports Series family. A short video documenting some of the stages of testing to date of the newest model in the McLaren range can be viewed at: www.youtube. com/McLarenAutomotiveTV. Up to this point through the development programme, the Sports Series has covered in excess of 500,000 testing kilometres. These have been on a mixture of race circuits and roads, in some of the harshest conditions around the world including the extreme heat of the Arizona and Nevada summer, the Arctic conditions common of northern

Sweden in the winter and, of course, the changeable British weather. The McLaren Production Centre (MPC) has now been set up in preparation for the start of production, with all tooling in place for the new model. The latest phase of the Sports Series programme will ensure the smooth transition of production methods already in place for the Super Series and Ultimate Series models with minimal disruption. It will see the integration of the Sports Series into the production line along with the Super Series, underlining the flexibility of the MPC. This will also ensure the highest levels of quality, matching the exacting standards befitting any model wearing the McLaren badge. Andreas Bareis, Executive Director – Quality at McLaren Automotive explained: ‘The pre-production phase is one of the most important, and also one of the most demanding, in a product readiness phase at McLaren. Up to this point, vehicles have been running in various locations around the world and subjected to some of the harshest conditions, and we are testing every component and system to the extreme. This final phase brings all testing together for the first time in a package that is representative of the cars our owners will be taking delivery of. ‘As we move forward as a business we take learnings from previous projects and current products, and now moving into the sports car sector, the programme has become the most challenging to date as we push the bar of quality and performance even higher. The relentless drive for continuously

improving quality within all business areas, with a focus on the pre-production phase, enables us to achieve a significant milestone which was set as a key target at the beginning of the programme. It is a real achievement by the different teams across the business that have helped progress to this point.’ Deliveries of the Sports Series, starting with the 570S Coupé, will commence before the end of the year. When the full family has been launched, forecast to be by the end of 2017, the range is expected to more than double the annual volume of McLaren, and bring the brand in front of a new audience.

I am a 38 year old woman, married for the last 10 years. My husband seems to have been attracted to another woman. He calls her, spends time with her, and does not care for me or my two sons anymore. Is there a way I can bring him back to us to save our family? ---Anonymous

Dear Friend, First, our deepest sympathy to you and your current state. Are you absolutely sure that your husband has strayed? Could it also be your misunderstanding or misconception? To clarify that, discuss this with your husband peacefully. If your fear eventually turns out to be true, then it is time to handle the situation maturedly in the interest of your kids. Ask yourself: do you want to try to work out this marriage or do you want an honourable exit out of this marriage. It will be insulting to your dignity to call the other woman, shout , scream and make a scene. Instead, strengthen your heart and mind against the man who could so easily replace you! Keep your head call, consult a lawyer who and make arrangements for an amicable exit out of this defunct marriage.

Our next door neighbor is a wife-beater. Almost every other day, he comes home drunken and physically assaults his wife. We get disturbed by the great noise that he makes, and the yells and cries of the wife and the children. We are often confused as to whether protesting would be an intrusion into their private space. What should we really do? ---Abdullah Dear Abdullah, Abdullah, you certainly did the first thing right! To have got concerned about inhumanity that is happening right next to you. You owe it to humanity to protest against any inhuman action that you see someone else being subjected to irrespective of who the victim is and whether you know them or not. If you know others in the neighborhood, get together and discuss this issue. Decide to move jointly regarding this. All of you can call on the family or meet the man separately and tell him that you have noted this and vehemently protest against this. Do not hesitate to threaten him of severe consequences in the future of reporting him to the police if this continues. It is just human to come to the rescue of a helpless victim of cruelty, isn’t it?

I am an expat woman living in Bahrain for the last 10 years. Bahrain is practically home for my family and me. My kids (7 and 5) are completely used to the comfort and security of the life here in Bahrain. I fear that they will find it extremely difficult to adjust to the hardship of life back home in my own country. Please advise as to how to grow them up as tough individuals capable of a life of hardships when we repatriate? ---Jenny Dear Jenny, Thank you for your mail. It is indeed a common cause of concern for most expatriates as the lifestyle we enjoy in Bahrain is incomparable in terms of its luxury, comfort and opulence. Naturally, the thought of going back to our home countries where the conditions are not as favorable is quite natural to make us apprehend how our children will cope with the changes. To begin with, talk to them about how lifestyle here is different from that of the home country. Train them to be self-sufficient and to offer a helping hand at home to share the chores, even if you have a domestic help. Train them to be conscious about the limitedness of water and electricity so that they learn to switch off the lights, fans, television, etc., when they leave a room, and turn off the tap after use.Take them for frequent visits to your home country if possible to familiarize them with your relatives, friends, and the general way of life there.

Reclaim Home Cooking with the Samsung Hot Blast

Canon strengthens 4K camera segment with C300 Mark II and XC10

Consumers in the GCC are looking for quick fixes in fast food, as suggested by the food retail growth in the GCC. Rising incomes and the explosion of modern retail led residents in the UAE to spend around AED 841 per month on restaurant meals at one time, while residents in Qatar spend AED774 and those in Kuwait spend AED719 per month per person on average[1]. And spending will only climb with the growth of food retail—a $23 billion pot, according to AT Kearney, a global management consulting firm. Yet, this booming industry affects consumers negatively—both financially and in terms of quality of life. Constant dinners out and orders in are taxing on the wallet and the body and may not even save as much money or time as people think. To keep home cooking convenient, consumers may consider going back to basics. Among the latest microwaves that offer savings and the flavor of a fresh meal is the Samsung MW8000 Hot Blast Microwave. Specifically designed to create a selection of crispy and juicy grills at home, the Samsung MW8000 is an unlikely life-saver, time-saver and cost-cutter. Home cooking beats out the competition when it comes to saving money. When you are choosing between dining out and bringing home prepared food, you are paying for something that, with a bit of practice, you can probably do better. The Hot Blast Oven makes sure that you get the most out of your appliance by allowing you to cook dishes up to 380mm wide. With the ability to cook your very own family-sized pizza at home, poor quality fast food will be a thing of the past.

Canon Middle East, a leader in imaging and business solutions, demonstrated its commitment to the film production and news broadcasting industry of the region by unveiling its new range of ultra-high definition (4K) cameras. Last Note The Round Ladder

By Omar Ahmed Alkhulaqi

Jealousy is to live in comparison, Somebody is higher, Somebody is lower; You however seem to be Somewhere in the middle Rung of the ladder. Perhaps the ladder is a circle, Because no one finds the end of it.

The Self-destructive Flames of Jealousy Have you ever wondered how we allow negative

emotions to house in our minds and eat into us every day making us unhealthy, less productive, cynical

and pessimistic? Well, Jealousy is certainly one such

negative emotion that erodes happiness from our soul

with its toxicity. Jealousy results in anger, resentment, frustration and often affects one’s mind and health, if left to grow uncontrollably.

Come to think of it, it is a slavery or bondage of sorts that fetters the mind into a dark and toxic existence.

It has triggered greater crimes and acts of destruction in many, and has been the subject of various literary works. As Shakespeare had said:

O! beware, my lord, of jealousy; It is the green-eyed monster which doth mock The meat it feeds on. ~William Shakespeare, Othello We leave you with this thought and a beautiful reflection on the subject by Omar Ahmed Alkhulaqi.
