ow do you summarise two years worth of experiences in one letter? It’s impossible. As old doors close and new ones open, I will be forever grateful for the enriching experience I had during my time at Sabaya. There are some really hardworking people in the team, some have a presence in the paper, others toil away behind the scenes, often late into the night. Fridays too. I would like to leave you my last issue of Sabaya, the Ramadan edition. Find tips on how to stay healthy during the holy month and don’t forget to flip over to our fashion pages, interviews and reviews. Finally, I’m thankful for you, our readers. Without you, all of this effort is pointless. We write in order to inform you, entertain you or show you something in a way you’d never seen it, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t read it. So thank you! So, this is my farewell. I say goodbye to one of the most stressful, difficult, exhausting and rewarding years of my life. Goodbye to the endless questions, the deadline extensions, the story ideas, the meetings and everything else being an editor entails.

“Fantastic Four” backlash does not bother Michael B Jordon

Actor Michael B Jordon is not bothered about the backlash surrounding his casting as Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four, a character originally written with blond hair and blue eyes. The actor, however, said his casting is not “political correctness or an attempt to meet a racial quota” but merely a reflection of modern times, reported Entertainment Weekly. “You’re not supposed to go on the Internet when you’re cast as a superhero. But after taking on Johnny Storm in Fantastic Four... I wanted to check the pulse out there. I didn’t want to be ignorant about what people were saying,” Jordon said in a write-up on the website. “It used to bother me, but it doesn’t anymore. I can see everybody’s perspective, and I know I can’t ask the audience to forget 50 years of comic books. But the world is a little more diverse in 2015 than when the Fantastic Four comic first came out in 1961,” he said. The actor said while many will find different meaning in it, his casting by Josh Trank is merely a creative choice.

Vergara’s former fiancé to seek custody of embryos

Stone, Garfield still have the ‘sparks’

Sofia Vergara’s former fiancé Nick Loeb is reportedly set to seek custody of their frozen embryos after a judge gave him permission to refile his lawsuit against the actress. Loeb, who is locked in a bitter dispute with the “Modern Family” star over the future of two female embryos they created together before their split May 2014, was granted permission to file a revised complaint by Superior Court Judge Lawrence Cho on Friday. This has allowed him to attempt to secure access to them and have them implanted in a surrogate, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The businessman originally filed a lawsuit against the 42-year-old actress in August 2014 in a bid to prevent her from ever destroying the embryos, even though she is now engaged to “Magic Mike” actor Joe Manganiello. The Colombian actress recently accused Loeb of taking advantage of her.

Actress Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield have reportedly put their “long and forced separation” behind them after recently rekindling their relationship. The 26-year-old actress and the 31-year-old actor, who recently rekindled their relationship following their split six weeks ago, have picked up where they left off because “nothing major happened” to cause them to break up. “Emma and Andrew are a great couple who have been apart for work. They are still seeing each other. Nothing major happened between them while he was away other than a long and forced separation. Andrew has been incredibly busy and so has Emma. But the sparks are still there,” a source close to the duo told people.com.

Natalie Portman relives ‘dark moments’ at Harvard in speech

Oscar-winning actress Natalie Portman returned to her alma mater and recalled how she had to prove herself as a worthy student while attending Harvard University. The “Black Swan” star graduated from the prestigious Ivy League school in 2003 with a degree in psychology, and more than a decade later, she was asked to be the keynote speaker at Harvard College’s Class Day ceremony, reported People magazine. “I went to a public high school on Long Island (New York). The girls I went to school with had Prada bags and flat-ironed hair. People didn’t pay much attention to the fact that I was an actress. I was known for having a backpack bigger than I was, and always having whiteout on my hands. “When I came in (to Harvard) as a freshman in 1999, I felt like there had been some mistake, that I wasn’t smart enough to be in this company. When I got to Harvard just after the release of Star Wars: Episode 1, I feared people would assume I had gotten in just for being famous, and not worthy of the intellectual rigor here,” she said.

Amanda Seyfried finds Charlize Theron trustworthy

Sexually abused women often take surgery too far: Jane Fonda

Actress Amanda Seyfried wants to be with Charlize Theron if the world ever comes to an end because she believes she would be the perfect person to take charge. The 29-year-old actress formed a close bond with the 39-year-old Oscar winner while filming “A Million Ways to Die In the West” last year. “If the apocalypse comes, I would want her to run the camp where we survive. She would, like, keep our morale up,” Seyfried told Vogue magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk. Seyfried also became friends with Seth MacFarlane on the set of the film and loved getting to work with him again on their upcoming movie, “Ted 2”. “It was so much fun. It’s like working with your best friend, coming to work every day knowing that he trusts me,” she said.

Veteran actress Jane Fonda believes women who have suffered sexual abuse are more likely to undergo extensive cosmetic surgery. Fonda, 77, said they take surgery too far as they attempt to change their past, reported The Guardian online. “The danger with surgery is you say, ‘Oh this is good, let me do more’. It can be an addiction. Thirty per cent of women were sexually abused when they were young.” “And a woman who has been sexually abused will have a tendency to go too far. When you’re young it can be (self harm) and when you’re older it can be plastic surgery. When I see a woman who’s made her face a mask I say, ‘I bet, I bet...’ People don’t realise sexual abuse is an epidemic. And it has a lot to with why women are distorting their faces with plastic surgery,” she said. JUNE 2015

Liam Neeson most-liked celebrity endorser Hollywood star Liam Neeson recently outranked other celebrities in a survey conducted by Nielsen company which scored celebrity endorsers. The survey measured a number of qualities, including likability, public awareness and influence, reported Ace Showbiz. Nielsen looked at celebrities who made commercials during the first quarter of the year and ranked them based on N-Score which took into account the aforementioned qualities. Neeson, 62, alongside Pierce Brosnan got the same score of 94. Despite the matching score, Nesson was put at the top of the list as he was said to have greater influence in getting the products sold. Neeson appeared in a “Clash of Clans” commercial for Supercell Games, while Brosnan promoted Kia Motors. The survey company said that Neeson was viewed positively by 78 per cent of Americans who knew him. Matthew McConaughey came in the third position with the score of 93. In the first quarter of 2015, he appeared in a commercial for Lincoln Motors.

No point in fight ageing, says George Clooney

Actor George Clooney doesn’t think there’s any point trying to “fight” ageing. The 54-year-old, who married lawyer Amal Alamuddin, 37, last year, has argued that men who dye their hair and have plastic surgery usually make themselves look even older than they are, reports femalefirst.co.uk. “I think for all of us, you have to come to terms with getting older and not trying to fight it,” Clooney said on a radio show. “You have a couple of options - which is get older or die. And so you have to get used to that idea that your roles in films and who you are and how you’re perceived is going to change. That will disappoint people at times,” he added. Asked if he’d ever considered cosmetic surgery or dyeing his hair, Clooney added: “Clearly I haven’t. For me it’s never been an issue or an option. I don’t think it would make much sense quite honestly. I’ve seen it happen - particularly on men - I don’t think it really works, I think it actually makes you look older.”

Kate Winslet feels makeup is ‘liberating’

Actress Kate Winslet finds makeup to be “liberating” and says it makes her feel “confident” and “feminine”. “Wearing makeup can make a woman feel confident, feminine and celebrated -- and I think it also brings a sense of liberation,” Winslet told the Stella magazine, reports femalefirst.co.uk. The 39-year-old actress also revealed the secret method she uses to keep her skin glowing and ready for the cameras. She said: “Fresh air does wonders for my skin so I keep a window open in my room at night for a little bit of breeze. I try to get as much sleep as possible, and drink plenty of water too.” Meanwhile, Winslet said she is feeling much more confident in her own body and deals with the “judgement (and) scrutiny” by examining her career successes instead of focusing on her figure.

‘No more selfies’ rule works for Salma Hayek Actress Salma Hayek thinks a “no more selfies” rule is a great idea for the red carpet. Organisers of the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival asked celebrities to refrain from taking photographs on their mobile phones while attending events. Hayek is supportive of enforcing a selfie ban on the red carpet. “There’s a time for everything. (Cannes is) a magical, special place, and it’s important to be present, and it’s important that it’s exclusive. No more selfies,” hollywoodreporter.com quoted Hayek as saying. Several of Hayek’s contemporaries also weighed in on the subject. Actress Amy Poehler is blown away by how vain pop culture has become recently. “It is amazing how much people like their own face these days, and how much they like to show it,” she said.

I’m not retiring from acting: Patrick Dempsey He may have left his role as Doctor McDreamy on “Grey’s Anatomy” behind him, but actor Patrick Dempsey insists his acting career is far from over. The 49-year-old star revealed that he’s not ready to retire just yet while speaking to People magazine. “I am not retiring from acting,” Dempsey said before continuing to share why he plans to embrace more of his other interests. “I definitely love racing. I love the camaraderie and the fellowship. I think the challenge is with oneself and not so much your fellow competitors, necessarily.” Dempsey recently departed “Grey’s Anatomy” in a shocking twist, leaving viewers upset by the surprising storyline. The actor had appeared on the show since it began in 2005.

Art-Spect

G

iuse Maggi has a knack for transforming the most mundane objects into astounding pieces of art. Milan-born Ms Maggi has been fusing glass to craft extraordinary sculptures and pieces of art. She started 20 years ago when she first moved to Saudi Arabia. Her husband gifted her a kiln and her knowledge in ceramics gave her an idea on how to work with glass. “I began reading books on the matter and teaching myself different fused glass and lamp work techniques,” she explained. She pursued her interest further by joining glass-making classes in Italy and then the Corning Museum of Glass in New York state and Murano, which she says was the stepping stone to her success. After many years in the countries of the Gulf, her works reflect her inspiration and fascination with the forms and colours of the landscape and Arab traditions. The mystery of the old cultures and the intense colours of the desert have captured her imagination, which led her to creating installations such as the ‘Flying Carpet’ and many more. The major difficulty Ms Maggi faced in the Gulf was getting the right type of glass for her work. “I needed coloured glass to make my artwork so I began colouring the glass myself with glass powder.” In 1999 one of her works was selected in the “New Glass Review 20”. The competition, organized by The Corning Museum of Glass, New York, selects the 100 most important glass art works of the year, since 1977. Her works have also been featured in various art exhibitions and installations in Bahrain, gaining her tenacious acclaim for her talent. Success Story

E

yes are the most coveted feature of a woman’s face, and lash brand Arabian Beauty is all about enhancing the eyes to achieve a look which strikes at first glance. The concept is the brainchild of Nadia Hijris. Nadia’s roots are half Bahraini and half English, and she blends the best of both with Arabian Beauty. The lash brand has received a lot of interest from the GCC and the rest of the world in the short time since its conception. Nadia tells us more about her stunning product, the inspiration behind it and her future plans with Arabian Beauty. How did you get inspired to start the brand? The idea was born a year ago but my passion for eyelashes started when I was a teenager. I was always fascinated by how eyelashes can change the shape of your eyes as well as change your entire look based on the shape of the lashes. Natural, powerful or sexy, the line of your lashes can make a huge difference in the look you are trying to achieve. What inspired the idea behind the concept? I was in the mall and saw a lady wearing a traditional gold burqa and all I could see were her eyes. They were so piercing, and she had this amazing eye makeup on which felt like she was talking through her eyes. This is the inspiration behind it. Last year during Ramadan I brainstormed with my best friend, who happens to be a designer, and we streamlined the product together. Tell me more about Arabian Beauty eye lashes and each of its variants. The hair is 100% natural, that and the glue are imported whereas the packaging is done locally. There are 10 lash variations, and each has a name. I haven’t just chosen any name, as each describes the kind of look the lashes are most suited for. For example, one is named ‘Layla’. Layla translates to dark beauty like the night. Hence the eyelashes are more dramatic, something you would wear at night and it comes in a black box. A lot of research has gone into Arabian Beauty, and everything was thought through before its production.

to the brand? Where do you see Arabian Beauty in the next few years? I plan to expand with mink lashes. Mink lashes are made of animal fur and no cruelty is involved. I want to start a full cosmetic line, expand Arabian Beauty as an international brand focusing on makeup, oud and abayas along with lashes. What is your take on the beauty and fashion sense of Arabian women in the region? I think Arab women are so beautiful because they are so mysterious, harbouring the ability to make an impression even without revealing all their features. Their makeup is so beautiful and well-defined. As for their fashion, Arab women are very stylish and chic, carrying themselves elegantly whatever the occasion. Our celeb fashion police, Ashwathy Shyam Kumar is a true blue fashionista. Multi talented, she is a fashion designer, buyer for a leading apparel brand in the Kingdom, stylist and diva. her fashion blog, www.thestylecounciltaash.blogspot.com is becoming one of the most popular fashion blogs in the region. ASK picks the best and the worst of what our fashion celebs have been wearing.

Eva Longoria

So far the actress has failed to impress at this festival, which is very unlike her. Tonight she wore a heavenly Georges Hobeika Spring 2015 Couture gown in a soft baby-blue hue, which looked gorgeous against her olive skintone. While I’m not particularly excited about her in this dress – as she’s not selling its ethereal vibe – it is perhaps her best look so far.

18

JUNE 2015

Marion Cotillar

Marion was quite disappointing this time last year, but the actress looked breath-taking wearing a Dior Couture off-the-shoulder gown imbued with plenty of highfashion allure. I love how this dual-colour piece perfectly sculpts Marion in all the right places, while showcasing her newfound sensuality. Thankfully shunning the overbearing necklace trend, she fulfilled her duties with Chopard wearing a bejewelled handpiece, with additional flecks of gold added to her hairpiece.

Glitz & Glam

Dita von Teese

The burlesque star wore an Ulyana Sergeenko Spring 2015 Couture layered bell-shaped dress adorned with beautiful embroidered details. This is a huge leap outside her comfort zone, so I would’ve loved for Dita to have switched up the styling on this occasion, with the hair being worn up for a start. I have a feeling this might not go down so well, but my issue is the decision to wear the ankle-strap shoes with that skirt length, and of course the necklace paired with such a decorative piece.

Diane Kruger

The German actress was certainly in the party spirit when she donned this Chanel Pre-Fall 2015 frock for the occasion, looking just about ready to shake her tail feathers. The positives: This look is fun and flirty. I like the fuchsia-pink clutch and the simple Gianvito Rossi sandals. The negatives: I would’ve preferred her hair up.

Glitz & Glam

Alexandra Daddario

The actress wore a Bibhu Mohapatra Spring 2015 blushpink and black dress with a dramatic train, which I strongly believe looked better in motion. Stationary, the train doesn’t translate too well, but that just could be down to its placement in this picture. Hair and makeup wise, she’s rocking this 40s inspired look.

Sienna Miller

The British actress was much improved on her previous outing, wearing a Ralph Lauren Collection custom hand-beaded slip dress. This look saw her revert back to the simple and sophisticated track she started this festival opting for, before derailing on her last two efforts.A smaller clutch than her Nathalie Trad oversized option would’ve been preferred, but overall I love this feminine, understated look from Sienna.

Ramadan Special

Tips For A Healthy Lifestyle During Ramadan And Throughout The Year

A

healthy diet is crucial during Ramadan and throughout the year; keep it balanced and avoid fried and sugar-filled foods. During Ramadan, iftar is the star. It is considered as a reward after a long day of fasting. Iftar fulfils more than 55 per cent of the body’s nutrition needs and balances the sugar levels in the blood and brain. It is recommended to have your iftar over two phases: start with dates, soup and salad, do the prayers and then have your main course. Exercise is very important during Ramadan. Try to take moderate exercise, like a brisk walk, each evening before breaking fast, and keep this up throughout the year, at least 5 days per week Fluid replenishment should be a priority. Drink plenty of water, avoiding sugar-filled drinks. Aim to drink at least eight glasses of water after iftar and throughout the night to ensure proper hydration and to avoid dehydration symptoms. Other food items that also

22

JUNE 2015

contribute to fluid intake are soup, juice, yogurt and coffee in moderation Watch your weight to avoid rapid weight gain during the Holy Month, and look to maintain a normal body weight through the year by adopting a healthy lifestyle

Tips for iftar meal:

Break your fast with a date. Dates balance the blood sugar levels and contain beneficial minerals and fibre. Remember moderation, have up to three dates and don’t overeat! Soups are a very important part of the iftar table. They are warm and easy on the stomach and provide the body with some fluids and minerals. They are a healthy start to your iftar meal. Remember to include salads at every iftar. Fresh vegetables contain fibres which are an essential part of the diet during Ramadan to avoid constipation and maintain a healthy digestive system. Be creative! Prepare salads which are rich in vegetables of different colours. The more

colour the more beneficial vitamins and minerals. Try to avoid fried. Instead, prepare baked pastries or steamed vegetables Remember your balanced plate split. Fill ¼ with carbohydrates, ¼ with proteins, and the remaining half with veggies. This way you can fulfil all your nutritional needs in a balanced and healthy way. Desserts should be consumed in moderation. With each iftar, serve only one dessert choice and keep your portion of sweet not more than three fingers in size. You can have fresh or dried fruits and nuts instead of dessert to satisfy your sweet cravings. Another important meal in Ramadan is Suhoor. It provides the body with its requirements of sugar and energy before a long day of fasting and it is a supplementary meal after iftar that provides the body with even more nutrients. A well-balanced Suhoor that provides the right nutrients can reduce the effects of fasting such as laziness, headaches, fatigue, hunger and discomfort.

Ramadan Special

An example of a well-balanced suhoor:

More tips

First of all, keep exercising. Some people prefer

A glass of low fat milk with cereals or a piece of brown bread with low fat cheese or boiled egg. A piece of fruit like banana, apple , dates or watermelon

to workout before Iftar, while others prefer

What about coffee?

otherwise you risk dehydrating yourself during

You can continue to enjoy your coffee over the Holy month. Gradually adjust your sipping patterns: If you are a regular coffee drinker and you drink 4 cups of coffee per day, begin by switching 1 out of your 4 cups to decaffeinated coffee two weeks before Ramadan, and then eventually shift to two decaffeinated cups and two regular coffees a few days before Ramadan.

General tips:

 If you suffer from constipation while fasting: Have enough fluids and foods rich in fibre  If you suffer from heartburn after iftar: Avoid fried foods and high fat foods  If you suffer from gastric ulcers: Avoid spices, coffee, carbonated beverages and fried foods  If you suffer from continuous hunger: Have foods which are slowly absorbed such as foods rich in fibres  If you suffer from fullness or gastrointestinal discomfort after eating: Chew your food very well and allow enough time for your meal, and don’t overeat!

after. It really depends on you. If you workout before Iftar then make sure it’s about an hour or so before. Don’t workout in the morning,

the rest of the day. If you workout, make sure to have a light Iftar and wait an hour to two hours after. Also, I would not recommend

training with the same intensity you do during the rest of the year. At the end of the day

however, you know your body best, and have to decide what the best thing for you is.

I break my fast with a green juice made of

raw blended vegetables, which is a great way

to replenish your body after fasting. I have this with some dates, followed by a very light meal. You might consider doing the same.

Finally, the most important advice I can

give is to start Ramadan healthy, and not

overeat or indulge in desserts. If you start right you’ll be able to maintain it for the rest of the

Holy Month. However, if you have the lovely

sweets and desserts from Day One, you’ll have a very hard time stopping, and by the end of

the month you’ll have gained a lot of weight,

and feel miserable. Remember the Holy Month is about cleansing - spiritual and physical - not about indulgence.

Summer Heat

Five ways to beat the Summer heat by AlAnood Al Khalifa 1. Cocnut

Water - Low in calorie and packed with B vitamins, potassium and omega fatty acids I have officially substituted drinking regular water with coconut water. Staying hydrated is essential, but especially so in our part of the world since humidity can take a toll on us. Dubbed as nature’s Gatorade, it is recommended to have a drink of coconut water after a work out session as its great for rehydration and is quick to replace electrolytes. Since Coconut water has been quiet poplar, not all brands are offering the best quality of

24

JUNE 2015

coconut water. I found Vita Coco sold at Al Osra supermarket to be excellent, try to avoid the flavoured coconut water as they contain more calories.

2. Moisturize

- Keeping your skin moisturized is essential! I have found that women are neglecting the use of a good moisturiser during the summer claiming that its too thick and heavy during the heat. Not all moisutrziers are suitable all year round. Try and find a lightweight moisturizer than can keep skin supple. I am enjoying Epicuren

Beauty Colostrum Cream, it smells citrusy with bitter orange oil that hydrates and brightens the skin, Aloe Vera gel that is soothing and of course the main ingredient the Colostrum, the ultimate moisturiser, restores the skins elasticity. Its lightweight making it the perfect summer pisturzer and looks perfect under sun block and make up.

3. Mio’s Lucky Leg Gel - perfect for women who are always on their feet. Circulaotry systems problems arise when there is limited blood flow to the legs, hands heart and rest of the body. Elevating the legs and feet does help the swelling,

however the summer heat does increase swelling and heaviness in the legs and ankles. This cooling and energising gel eases away weary heavy legs. Packed with energising oils and refreshing spearmints clinically tested to help releve discomfort from tired legs and feel and helps with circulation.

4. Davines

Replumping Hair TreatmentGiving extra attention to to your hair is even more crucial in the summer. From Davines Natural Tech line works to boost moisture and elasticity. Its a treatment done in the salon and will take up to 30 minutes but is highly recommended,

hair looks rep lumped, compact and very shiny.

5. Charlotte

Tilbury Brozing Lotion - No one can resist a tan in the summer. However, we have to limit out time in the sun as it could be quiet draining. This Super Model Body Shimmering paraben-free decribced as “shapeware lingerie for the skin its a firming solution that gives a radiatant glow making the body look longer and leaner. Its very quick and easy to apply, comes in a 60 ml tube with a metal rollerball applicator. This product washes off and enhances a tan.

Astounding Antalya

A

long with Istanbul, Antalya is the most popular region for people holidaying in Turkey. The area stretches from the district of Gazipasa to the upmarket resort of Kalkan and is home to many historical ruins, places of natural beauty and gorgeous beaches. Tourism in Antalya is serious business and it is impossible to be bored, whether you are traveling solo or with family and friends. Antalya has something for everyone. If you want to dose up on sightseeing, the labyrinthine old town is full of historic sites, while the atmospheric old harbour makes a tranquil spot to relax. But the city is also perfectly placed to act as your base for sightseeing in the outlying area where grand Roman ruins at Aspendos and caves inhabited in prehistoric times await. Here is a list of top 7 things to do in Antalya.

Old Town (Kaleiçi) The maze-like Kaleiçi neighbourhood was made for strolling. Perfectly restored whitewashed and red-roofed Ottoman mansions line the cobblestone streets, now home to a plethora of boutique hotels, souvenir shops, art galleries and restaurants. Although it’s more a place to simply breathe in the old world ambiance, there are also plenty of small tourist attractions for those who want to sight-see. The main square (Kale Kapısı) has a fortress gate and stone-clad clock tower, while the 18th century Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque is worth a look just for its stunning interior tile work. Old Harbour Nestled into a recess in the cliffs, Antalya’s old harbour is a picturesque huddle of boutiques, pretty cafés, bazaars and gently bobbing yachts that look out over a shimmering Mediterranean. With its peaceful pleasure-boat atmosphere now, JUNE 2015

it’s difficult to imagine this place was once Antalya’s major economic hub. But from the 2nd century up until the mid-20th century this was the main port, bringing trade and prosperity to the city and surrounding region. Antalya Museum If you’re at all interested in Turkish history don’t miss this excellent museum. The dazzling exhibits here showcase all the best finds from excavation sites across the Turkish coast. Even better, the collection is displayed in exemplary fashion making Turkey’s rich (and rather complicated) history easy to understand. The large archaeological section offers displays

from the Bronze Age to Byzantium with a particular emphasis on ruins in the nearby area. Hadrian’s Gate Hadrian’s Gate is one of the main (and the most dramatic) entrance gates into the Kaleiçi district. Considerable stretches of the Hellenistic and Roman town walls on the eastern side of the old town have been preserved and Hadrian’s Gate is the most notable of these sections. Erected in honour of the AD 130 visit by Emperor Hadrian himself, this imposing three-arched marble gateway, flanked by imposing towers, is decorated with rich sculptural decorations.

Aspendos The main reason history-buffs visit Antalya is to make the day trip to Aspendos. This archaeological site is home to a Roman theatre commonly thought to be the best preserved in the world and one of Turkey’s top tourist attractions. The glory days of this dazzling ancient town were during the 2nd and 3rd centuries when most of the ruins seen today were built. Olympus and the Chimaera The near-twin villages of Olympus and Çıralı sit on a piece of lovely coastline surrounded by the ruins of the ancient Lycian city of Olympus. The famed attraction here is the chimaera - a naturally

occurring eternal flame that flickers out of the rock cliff above. Olympus is popular with young backpackers and has a bit of a party-reputation while Çıralı is more laid-back and all about chilling out on the beach. Both are perfect for anyone seeking a beach holiday well away from Turkey’s purposely built-up tourist resorts. Karst Springs (Düdenbası magaras)

The limestone countryside around Antalya is rich in karst springs, sinkholes and waterfalls. Lime deposits from these springs have built up over a period of 1.5 to 2 million years into vast travertine terraces similar to those at Pamukkale. Kirkgöz and Pınarbası (located just to the northwest of Antalya) have springs and sinkholes while at Düdenbası a cascade of waterfalls tumble down a narrow gorge.

ant to go away to for a retreat to a lush resort overlooking azure waters but short on time? Head to the Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Sea and Spa instead of travelling far and wide for an unforgettable getaway. The crescent shaped hotel, evocative of sea shells on the beach is akin to the proverbial oasis in the middle of a sweltering desert. Emanating an aura true to French luxury, the 5-star property offers its guests a pristine beach getaway away from the bustling city, with 262 rooms which are a blend of comfort and elegance, encompassing a variety of opulent options for the discerning traveler. Amenities include five restaurants and four bars, one grand ballroom, two meeting rooms, fitness centre, a beach and kids club as well as a Thalassa Sea and Spa. Majestic Arabian grandeur is the dominating theme of the hotel, with slender palm trees sprouting tall in the vicinity along with delicate lantern lights hanging from the high ceiling. I was invited for a Zen Getaway Stay, which included a 2-night stay at a Club Level room, various spa treatments and sumptuous meals.

Day 1

For those who choose to stay on the Club Level, check-in happens at the Millesime Club Lounge. The Club Level is the epitome of privacy, with light meals offered throughout the day at the lounge. The very sweet Svilena escorted me to the room and asked me to contact her if I need anything. The rooms are magnificent, with dark exotic timbers and plush furnishings, overlooking the poolside and the turquoise waters of the Arabian Gulf from the balcony. I had lunch at Saraya, the all-day dining restaurant, with a pianist filling the atmosphere with hypnotic Arabian JUNE 2015

melodies. The Sofitel Bahrain Zallaq Thalassa Sea & Spa is the first hotel in the GCC to offer thalasso-therapy. The complex features 14 treatment rooms, utilizing sea products, massages and wellness programs. The Thalassa Sea & Spa also features a seawater hydrotherapy pool, a freshwater pool, saunas, steam rooms, hairdresser for men and beauty salon for women, as well as a yoga studio and a meditation area. I was scheduled for a Multi-Jet Bath and Affusion scrub at the Thalassa Sea and Spa in the afternoon. The spa is truly oneof-a-kind, and my friendly spa attendant walked me through the experience before it began. Multi Jet Bath entails a large tub, where you immerse yourself and powerful jets massage your body. The Affusion Scrub is a salt scrub which works to combat cellulite and dead skin cells while leaving the skin soft and supple. My skin was baby soft after the treatments. I decided to walk over to the beach, just in time to watch the sun setting over the Arabian Gulf while strolling through white, sandy beach shore. Dinner that night was at Fiamma, the Italian eatery in the hotel. There are some really unique, delectable victuals to choose 42

Day 2

Waking up to breathtaking views of what lay beyond the balcony instantly energized me. I headed to Saraya for breakfast that was fit for a king, with various popular breakfast foods from all over the region and the world. The first spa treatment for the day was the Affusion Shower, which is like a rain shower with salt water. The shower relaxes you and preps your skin to absorb nutrients whilst working on cellulite. The buffet spread at Saraya changes every day, so you get to try different culinary delights without getting your palate bored. The lunch buffet this time consisted predominantly of Arabic and Indian cuisine. My third spa treatment entailed a body wrap and an underwater massage. I was made to lie down on a heated water bed while the spa attendant applied a nourishing skin mask on my body. After getting wrapped in silver body foil, the massagers under the water bed beckoned me to drift off into a short but restful nap. My skin was glowing after the treatment. The underwater massage was involved being immersed in a tub of water infused with Algae powder and the spa attendant using a water jet to massage my body. This is a very relaxing massage and helps improve blood circulation and target cellulite-prone areas. Upon returning to the room, I was surprised by the housekeeping members with a lovely gesture. A tub full of bubble bath and rose petals! The staff of the hotel really know how to keep their guests happy. Dinner that night was at the Wok, which serves Vietnamese cuisine. This is the first authentic Vietnamese restaurant in the Kingdom, and everything from the presentation of the food to the texture and flavor of the dishes deserves a 5-star rating. Thus came an end to the blissful spa weekend at the Sofitel Bahrain. The Sofitel is the perfect getaway for those seeking solace within the island without wanting to travel far. The staff is attentive and considerate, and the hotel resembles a picturesque postcard. For room rates and bookings, contact: +973 17636363.

Nicole’s Mediterranean Restaurant and Lounge 44

JUNE 2015

Restaurant Review

S

tanding as a colourful edifice reminiscent of the nostalgic spirit of the Mediterranean region, Nicole’s Mediterranean Restaurant and Lounge is the latest culinary gem to grace the buzzing restaurant scene of Adliya. With three floors to wine and dine on, Nicole’s is the first authentic Mediterranean eatery, where you can enjoy Italian, French, Greek, Lebanese and Spanish cuisine with a twist by Cordon Bleu ChefValterPiergiovanni. You can choose to dine on Italian coast, French Riviera, and the Lebanese mountains or soak up the sun on the Santorini-style rooftop. Upon entering, the atmosphere is that of a tavern somewhere in Europe, with mellifluous tunes of ambient music that mingles with the heady aromas of the cooking. The walls and seating are adorned in bright colours. My dining partner and I chose to sit on the indoors on the floor because it was still sunny outdoors. We were handed the menu, which had a variety of seafood, pasta, meat as well as signature dishes. We went with the chef’s suggestions and waited in anticipation for the food to arrive. Florence, the lovely Marketing and PR Manager of the complex gave us a brief history of how the restaurant came to be while we were waiting for the meal. Nicole’s Mediterranean Restaurant & Lounge was founded in 2014 by the husband-and-wife-team, Fadi and Denise Kfoury, as a space that would bring premium Mediterranean cuisine to Bahrain. Among their four children, the Kfoury family has only one girl, named Nicole, where the name comes from. For starters, we were served with Nicole’s platter for two, which comprised of Bresaola salad, chicken liver bruschetta ,Montasio cheese, grill Manchego cheese, marinated olive’s, roasted peppers and fried zucchini. So many delights in one platter! To salty bresaola cuts were served with wedges of orange to balance the flavour. It is also the perfect portion for two people, not too filling yet appetizing. The second starter was Sturgeon Carpaccio with fresh fennel salad, garlic

and lemon vinaigrette. The resulting flavour was delicate and refreshing, a great choice for summer. After a quick pause, the culinary journey continued with main course. Duck breast in mix berry sauce with black truffle risotto, and baked apple adorned the table first. It is worth noting that presentation of each dish is impeccable, serving not only a feast for the palate but also for the eyes. Each of the victuals complimented each other in perfect harmony. The black truffle risotto was rich and creamy, and the berry sauce brought out the taste of the duck meat. The second dish was a plate of jumbo shrimps in lemon sauce, vegetables ratatouille and green olive chips. Simple yet palatable, this is a must-try for seafood lovers. I have tried many variations of apple tart in my years but none like the signature apple tart, which was the chef’s dish of choice for dessert. The apple tart is served with homemade cinnamon flavoured icecream, lending a subtle hint of spice to the sweetness of the tart. We ended the meal with shenanigans over coffee on the rooftop lounge, watching the sunset in the distance. Nicole’s is a great place for large gatherings or intimate dinners, with a seating capacity of 300 across all the floors. For reservations, call 17280700. JUNE 2015

Techno Talk Epson BrightLink Pro 1430Wi

A Robust Projector ideal for businesses and classrooms

The BrightLink Pro features several interactive modes that are perfect for business users. The two main modes are Whiteboard Mode (where the BrightLink Pro becomes a digital whiteboard on whatever source is projected) and PC-Free Annotation Mode. With Whiteboard mode, there can be two people using the pens and another six people using their fingers. For the PC-Free Annotation Mode two people can use two pens and another two people can use their fingers. There is also a Computer Interactive Mode, which allows a presenter to show their desktop and then that desktop can become part of the BrightLink Pro interactive experience. As expected, the BrightLink Pro’s projector works well, but the collaborative touch-enabled aspects of the BrightLink Pro are incredible. Being able to use the pen, or your finger, to swipe through a deck, interact with your screen, is fluid and painless. Setup of the BrightLink Pro is going to take time. There are two ways to install the BrightLink Pro. If you are going to use the table mount, then the process is a little bit easier than the wall mounting. The

instructions for installing the mount on the back of the BrightLink Pro are confusing as the instructions do not say what screws to use in certain holes.

Final verdict

The BrightLink Pro has everything your business needs for presentations, to collaborate internally, and to share with people externally. Its interactive collaborative features are impressive and will revolutionize your team meetings.

Techno Logic Latest Gadgets and what you will love about them! Microsoft Lumia 640 LTE review

Introducing the successor to the Nokia Lumia 635

The Microsoft Lumia 640 is among the first in a new breed of Windows Phones. With a larger screen, more RAM and a different design language from its predecessor, this is Microsoft stamping its logo (literally) on the Lumia range. And what a change this proves to be. The old Nokia did things a little differently. Budget devices made by the Finnish firm were notoriously bare-bones; this could be seen in the decision to omit Gorilla Glass and limit RAM in models such as the Lumia 520 and 630, among others. Value was added for the consumer through access to services such as MixRadio and HERE Maps. Microsoft takes something of a different tack. Those who purchase a Microsoft Lumia 640 will receive several sweeteners, such as 30GB of free OneDrive storage and a one-year subscription to Office 365. These in themselves are nice, especially for the price. With a 5-inch panel, the Lumia 640 certainly sports a comfortable amount of real-estate on which to consume media and play games. And at 294 PPI, though not quite ‘Retina’ in its quality, the screen should please everyone (pixel peepers aside). Web browsing was an enjoyable experience, as was viewing HD video. In the best Lumia tradition, the abilities of the Microsoft Lumia 640’s panel do not end there. As mentioned, the Gorilla Glass protection makes using the device a very easy experience.

Final verdict

46

JUNE 2015

Despite its somewhat cheap design and the occasional quirk, the Microsoft Lumia 640 is a remarkably well-rounded device. With an excellent screen, a nice camera, strong battery life and good general performance, this is a phone that should easily suit the lifestyles of most. This is Microsoft’s challenge to the Moto G, and with sales of the latest device in the line failing to hit the heights set by its predecessor, the time is right to strike. With 30GB of free OneDrive storage and a year’s subscription to Office 365 for those who purchase the device, the Lumia is an easy sell for most people. Despite this, two major question marks hang over the device, the first being Windows 10. Set to debut later this year, Microsoft’s major update to its operating ecosystem will bring major changes, and whether these will wash away the tentative footsteps made by Windows Phone into the mobile market is yet to be seen.

Techno Talk Garmin Vivoactive

An exercise band that is also nearly a smartwatch Most smartwatches aren’t all that great for people who actually exercise: runners, swimmers and cyclists. Without GPS, a watch is just left guessing your speed and distance based on how fast you move your arms. Even the ones that currently have GPS don’t often make great use of it. This is definitely not one of the more striking smartwatches. A plain black square on an anonymous rubbery strap, it›s not going to make your friends immediately jealous. Garmin even chucks away the minimalist vibe it could have gone for, by plastering a pair of soft key icons on the front. The Vivoactive is not a flat-out bad-looking watch. It’s just a bit boring. One other amazingly convenient aspect is battery life. Somehow Garmin has managed to squeeze up to three weeks’ use out of a charge from this fairly dinky device. At the best of times the Garmin Vivoactive screen isn’t going to wow you as an Apple Watch might, but then it’s not meant to. And it has something else we find incredibly useful. This is an always-on screen, meaning you can check out the time without having to press

any buttons or play the role of arm-waggling, gesture-performing monkey just to get the display to activate. It›s most refreshing. There are loads of custom watch faces you can use too, some of which pack in extra details like the watch›s battery level and how close you are to meeting your daily steps goal.

Verdict

The Garmin Vivoactive is one of the few smartwatches of real substance. It’s not banking on an evolving future of a platform it has no control over. It has to justify its existence right here, right now. And you know what: it does. If you’re into running or even looking to get into it, this is a terrific smartwatch. The same goes for cyclists, swimmers and even keen weekend walkers. It’s no Apple Watch rival. But that’s why it works. By playing a different game entirely, it holds onto its relevance while still having enough smartwatch DNA to avoid feeling like a pure runner’s gadget.

Technics Premium C700

The legendary Japanese hi-fi brand is reinvented for the high resolution audio age

The Premium C700 system is the first Technics branded hi-fi system to be launched in seven years. The hi-fi brand, which was lauded and loved throughout the Seventies and Eighties for its turntables and silvery separates, was retired by parent Panasonic during a corporate cleanout and thought consigned to the car boot of AV history. However it now lives again, fuelled by the inexorable rise of high resolution audio. Build quality across the range is superb. You get the sense that these components will look as good in 2025 as they do today. The cool retro cosmetic design is a real winner. The digital amp is not particularly large,

measuring just 340 x 131 x 324mm (w/h/d). Naturally the fascia features characteristic illuminated VU meters (how could it not?), with a central volume dial. Rather than opt for a common–or-garden switch-mode power supply, Technics has gone old school with a low-noise, high-capacity linear power supply. The speakers are rear-ported, with chunky binding posts. Charged with delivering crisp highs is a 19mm aluminium diaphragm dome tweeter, rated up to 100kHz; it›s allied to a flat 160mm woofer. This self-proclaimed Premium package produces a highly refined sound, a rarefied realism. The speakers are revelatory, creating a soundstage of almost physical depth. Imaging

is precise, with vocals and instruments spatially coherent.

Final verdict

Timing is everything. Technic’s C700 system has it in spades, effortlessly musical regardless of your chosen genre. The Technics relaunch is also well timed. With high resolution audio finding genuine traction (when Iron Maiden remaster their entire back catalogue you know things are moving in the right direction), there are tangible benefits to be had from reinvesting in classic stereo separates like these. Minor caveats aside, I rate the C700 a luscious example of hi-fi luxe.

Five essential cleaning tips for allergy sufferers

T

idying up is nothing to sneeze at, so follow these guidelines from Karcher Middle East Summer’s upon us and for residents of the Bahrain, it means bracing ourselves for the coming months of dusty and scorching hot weather. But the changing season also means that people suffering from asthma, rhinitis or conjunctivitis would have to contend with indoor and outdoor allergy triggers such as dust, dust mites, mould spores, pet dander and micro-organisms living in air-conditioning vents, to name just a few. Here’s how to have a comfortable, allergyfree summer. TIP 1: Wipe furniture with damp or antistatic cloth Cleaning is a double-edged sword. Wiping dust off surfaces actually releases allergens like dust into the air. To avoid this, wipe furniture with a moist or an antistatic cloth. This modern form of cleaning cloth facilitates dust removal, as the particles are attracted by the electric charge and adhere to the cloth. The general rule is dust first, then vacuum.

JUNE 2015

TIP 2: Dilute cleaning agents with water Some cleaning products can trigger allergic reaction that could affect some people’s skin or respiratory tract. Reduce the concentration of cleaning agents by diluting them with water. Don’t worry; this won’t affect the cleaning agent’s potency. Cleaning without the use of chemicals is also possible with a steam cleaner such as the SC 1 Premium from Kärcher, which is ideal for ensuring hygienic cleanliness of hard surfaces. TIP 3: Keep rooms adequately ventilated while cleaning Irritating cleaning agents and air-borne dust in enclosed areas are a significant problem for allergy sufferers. To prevent this, housedust allergy sufferers must always ensure there is good air circulation in the room when cleaning. During the hot season, ventilate the room early in the morning when the temperature is not so high. But before doing so, make sure that the weather permits and there is no sandstorm. Effective room air purifiers or mesh screens on windows and doors are also recommended to keep allergens at bay. TIP 4: Fold bed covers; hang pillows and covers outdoors

Made beds looks nice, but this also makes it easier for dust mites to survive because most of the moisture produced during the night through perspiration remains trapped under the bed cover. To prevent this, fold back the covers and air the room. It also helps to hang pillows and covers outdoors for a while. Remaining dust mites are destroyed by washing bed linen at 60 to 95 degrees Celsius or according to washing instructions. House-dust allergy sufferers can also use encasings, which are dust-miteproof covers, for mattresses, pillows and covers. TIP 5: Use vacuum cleaners with a waterfilter system These machines bind the vacuumed dirt in water, making them ideal for allergy sufferers. The DS 6.000 vacuum cleaner from Kärcher features a water filter for thoroughly clean floors and fresher, dust-free air. The dirt not retained in the water filter is collected in the machine with a HEPA 13 filter, which retains tiny dust particles as well as 99.99% of allergy-triggering excrements from house dust mites. The result: no more sneezing or coughing!
