About Rockefeller Arts Center

The Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center at SUNY Fredonia is a cultural resource for the entire region. With three performance halls and two galleries, the Center hosts more than 175 events annually. We hope YOU will join us for the 2010-11 season.

Benefits of your “Mix & Match” Season Tickets Convenience: Order your tickets all at once for the season and save repeated calls or trips to the ticket office. Enhanced exchange privileges. If your plans change, you can exchange your Mix & Match tickets for any other event on the master Mix & Match event list. And as a subscriber, there is no fee for doing so. See the link on our home page for an order form. Location, Location, Location. If you order tickets to any of our reserved seating events (Mainstage, Kaleidoscope or Pops), you will have first choice of seats before they go on sale to the general public. Affordability: Choose the “Three or More” plan and save an average of 15% off the regular ticket price. Choose the “Six or More” plan and save up to 25%! By ordering all your season tickets at once, you also save on multiple order processing fees that will apply if you order on a show-by-show basis during the year. “Making a date with yourself.” As a season ticket holder, you “make a date with yourself” to see shows you might otherwise just miss. With everyone’s busy schedule these days, it’s easy for a show to come and go before you get around to ordering tickets. The Mix & Match program makes it easy for you to plan in advance and enjoy some of the best arts and entertainment our region has to offer.


‘Mix & Match’ your own entertainment events We have some fantastic events lined up this season at the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center and I wanted you to be among the first to know what we have in store. Please look through this booklet for all the details. Our popular Mix & Match Season Ticket Program allows you to create your own season ticket package from the 19 events featured in this booklet. You have the option of the “3 and Up Plan,” in which you save up to 15 percent on tickets for any three, four or five events or the “6 and Up Plan,” in which you save up to 25 percent on tickets to any six or more events. Choose at least three events from the 19 featured here and create your own ticket package. The combinations are almost endless. We have return performances by the Boston Brass and the professional singers of the Best of Broadway in the DFT Communications Pops Series while the Kaleidoscope Family Series offers an interactive DuffleBag Theatre production and the talents of a nationally-known comedy ventriloquist. The World Travel Series features three adventure films and the Walter Gloor Mainstage Series will again spotlight the SUNY Fredonia Department of Theatre and Dance. To round things out, the Western New York Chamber Orchestra and the Hillman Opera bring some of the great classics to life. A Western New York Chamber Orchestra Classics Series event

Summer Serenade Sunday, Sept. 19 at 4 p.m.

King Concert Hall Serenades were originally occasional pieces meant to be played outdoors in the late afternoon or early evening. You can enjoy Mozart’s famous Gran Partita (used for the sound track of Amadeus) and Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Serenade for Strings in the comfort of King Concert Hall. The sizzling strings and stunning winds of WNYCO under the direction of Maestro Glen Cortese will be featured in these two incredible works.

A Fredonia Place World Travel Series event

The Other Side of Mexico with Fran Reidelberger Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m.

King Concert Hall Explore the central highlands from Mexico City to Colima. Ancient Aztec ruins, colonial silver towns, colorful markets older than America, the real tequila, arts and crafts festivals, rodeos, volcanoes, and butterfly heaven at 11,000 feet — all of this, plus the incredible people, are part of The Other Side of Mexico.

Charley’s Aunt Oct. 15, 16 and 21 at 8 p.m. Oct. 17 at 2 p.m.

Marvel Theatre Needing a chaperone in order to spend time with some young ladies, a pair of Oxford University students calls upon an aunt. When the aunt can’t make it, they ask a buddy to don women’s clothing and take her place – and general mayhem and hilarity ensue. This British farce, which broke records with its 1893 debut, has been entertaining audiences for more than 100 years.

A DFT Communications Pops Series event

The Boston Brass Friday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.

King Concert Hall For 25 years, Boston Brass has set out to establish a one-of-a-kind musical experience. From exciting classical arrangements to burning jazz standards and the best of the original brass quintet repertoire, Boston Brass treats audiences to a unique brand of entertainment, which captivates all ages. The ensemble’s lively repartee, touched with humor and personality, attempts to bridge the ocean of classical formality to delight audiences in an evening of great music and boisterous fun. A Fredonia Place World Travel Series event

Northern Europe with Marlin Darrah Saturday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m.

King Concert Hall Shot in high definition, this journey is a chance to sample the great natural wonders, architectural treasures and cultural and artistic widescreen highlights of several cities and countries. Take in the fjords, fish markets, art museums, cathedrals, lively pedestrian streets, great canals and bridges, palaces and parks. Along the way, you’ll meet the fascinating Northern European people.

A Western New York Chamber Orchestra Classics Series event

Sacred Words, Sacred Music Sunday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.

King Concert Hall Join the orchestra and the College Choir (Gerald Gray, director), in a true All Souls Day favorite, the Mozart Requiem. Soloists Angela Haas, Lynne McMurtry, Joe Dan Harper and Daniel Ihasz will join Maestro Glen Cortese to present this all-time classic. In addition, WNYCO soloists Brian Walnicki and Susan Royal will perform in works by Hindemith, Dvorak and Glen Cortese that will capture the spirit of this special time of year.

The Altruists Nov. 5, 6 and 11 at 8 p.m. Nov. 7 at 2 p.m.

Bartlett Theatre This satirical black comedy by Nicky Silver revolves around a group of young radicals. They rally in support of important issues, but find their morals challenged after a wealthy member commits murder. The group decides to frame an innocent person for crime in order to save the member – and the cash she can provide to the cause. This work contains mature themes and is for adults only.

A Star Media Group Kaleidoscope Family Series event

The Vocal Illusions of Lynn Trefzger Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.

Marvel Theatre Lynn Trefzger is a ventriloquist/ comedienne with a trunk full of zany characters that have accompanied her to stages throughout the country. Her vocal illusion talents were first brought to national audiences on Star Search and she has since performed with artists including Jeff Foxworthy, Ray Romano, The Smothers Brothers and Drew Carey. Lynn has appeared on ABC, TNN, A&E and Lifetime. Sponsored by Pucci’s Carpet One Furniture and Bedding


The annual Hillman Opera

Les Contes d’Hoffman Nov. 12 and 13 at 8 p.m. King Concert Hall The gothic tales of artist, poet and philosopher E.T.A. Hoffmann play out to the music of Jacques Offenbach in this staged concert production, which tells of a man who must choose between his love for his art and his love for a woman. Its best-known number is a barcarolle from Act II, which has been incorporated in many films, including the 1997 version of Titanic.

Christmas on Broadway A Best of Broadway production Thursday, Dec. 9 at 8 p.m.

King Concert Hall Guaranteed to put you into a festive mood, this concert features music from Broadway shows and classic films. The songs include White Christmas, O Holy Night, Feliz Navidad, and I’ll Be Home for Christmas. Professional performers Raymond Saar, Diane Ketchie, Valerie Perri and Scott Harlan return to Fredonia following the success of The Songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Broadway Showstoppers. A Western New York Chamber Orchestra Classics Series event

Vestiges Sunday, Feb. 6 at 4 p.m.

King Concert Hall Each work in this program has an unusual history, from Haydn’s lost concerto, to the young Mozart’s symphony thought to be composed by his father, but actually composed by him, to Ernest Bloch’s famous Concerto Grosso, based on fragments of the past. Join the orchestra as they unravel these mysteries and perform these marvels. Cellist Natasha Farny is featured in the Haydn concerto and Maestro Cortese makes his playing debut with the orchestra.

Peter Pan DuffleBag Theatre Friday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m.

Marvel Theatre Head off to the legendary Neverland with the boy who refused to grow up in this beloved tale of pirates, swordfights, fairies and pixie dust. And this journey will be an interactive one – random audience members will be brought on stage to play pivotal roles in this classic adventure. Touring the world since 1992, the “Nearly World Famous” DuffleBag Theatre has become one of the most celebrated companies in North America. They return to Rockefeller Arts Center to follow up 2009’s sold-out performance of Beauty and the Beast. Sponsored by the Observer

The Venetian Twins Feb. 25, 26 and March 3 at 8 p.m. Feb. 27 at 2 p.m.

Bartlett Theatre Identical twins, separated at birth and unlike each other in every way, arrive in the same town on the same day. Chaos ensues when cash, jewels and declarations of love are given to the wrong people. Ronjit Bolt’s translation updates this commedia dell’arte style for contemporary audiences. A Western New York Chamber Orchestra Classics Series event

Cosi fan Tutte Sunday, March 27 at 4 p.m.

King Concert Hall The Western New York Chamber Orchestra and the SUNY Fredonia voice department join forces to bring you one of Mozart’s greatest operas, Cosi fan Tutte. This lighthearted work has some of the most sublime music ever penned by the composer and tells a humorous and beautiful story about family, love and life. Angela Haas directs this production and the WNYCO musicians, led by Maestro Cortese, will accompany a superbly talented cast of singers.

The Sound of Music April 1, 2 and 7 at 8 p.m. April 3 at 2 p.m.

Marvel Theatre Maria, a young woman set on becoming a nun, is put to the test when she is assigned to be the governess of the seven mischievous Von Trapp children in this musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Popular songs include My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and the title song.

Ghost Towns of the Wild West with Gray Warriner Saturday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m.

King Concert Hall Visit real ghost towns of the American West – and those that have widescreen been reborn – in this high-definition film. With archival photographs, you travel back to the late1800s and then dissolve, flawlessly, to the same scenes today. Take a narrow gauge railroad and a Jeep trail to climb high into the Rockies and San Juan Mountains. Discover forgotten mining camps at the edge of alpine lakes. Experience the real West, where the true stories are even wilder than the fictional accounts.

Exceptions to Gravity Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m.

Marvel Theatre A recent inductee of the International Clown Hall of Fame, Avner Eisenberg has toured extensively, leaving a trail of laughter in his wake. His new show, Exceptions to Gravity, brings slapstick gags, illusions and a host of amazing feats together under one common theme – fun. It’s an event that audience members of all ages will enjoy. Avner Sponsored by is best known for his portrayal of The Jewel, the Mark and Michelle scene-stealing holy man, in The Jewel of the Nile, Twichell co-starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

Fredonia Dance Ensemble April 29, 30 at 8 p.m. May 1 at 2 p.m.

Marvel Theatre The best student dancers at SUNY Fredonia perform pieces choreographed by faculty members and guest artists including Paco Antonio and Lucilene de Geus, artistic directors of a flamenco dance company in New Mexico. The works will highlight the range in dance styles that audiences have come to expect from the Fredonia Dance Ensemble.

Big Band Song and Dance Commencement Eve Pops 2011 Friday, May 13 at 8 p.m.

King Concert Hall Rockefeller Arts Center’s end-ofyear gala will again feature eight of SUNY Fredonia’s most talented student vocalists, four amazing dancers and our professional 17-piece “Little Apple Big Band” comprised of top jazz players from throughout the region. Conductor Bruce Johnstone, choreographer Paul Mockovak and producer Jefferson Westwood are putting together a program of some of the best-loved American tunes from Broadway, Hollywood, Las Vegas and Tin Pan Alley.
