New York Voices For the past 29 years, Kim Nazarian has been harmonizing all over the world with New York Voices. In 2012, Ms. Nazarian was recognized as one of the top 50 most influential Armenian artists and inducted into her High School’s Hall of Fame. Along with the many recordings Kim has made with NYV, she is proud to be one of the featured voices on Bobby McFerrin’s VOCAbuLarieS CD. Another recent professional highlight is Ms. Nazarian’s collaboration with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and the Manchester Craftman’s Guild on a concert tour dedicated to the late, great Ella Fitzgerald. Kim also enjoys being part of a special program called Vocalese, (created by visionary producer, Larry Rosen), which integrates NYV with Manhattan Transfer and Jon Hendricks. In addition to being a requested vocalist, Kim’s work as a lyricist is in rising demand. Of course, you can hear her contributions on the NYV CDs; and now you can hear her other original lyrics throughout the world, including Russia, Brazil, the Netherlands (with Brazilian composer, Ivan Lins and the Metropole Orchestra), and Japan.

Most notably, Kim wrote the title track to the accompanying CD of Bill Strickland’s best selling book Making the Impossible Possible. You can find her song World of Possibilities on iTunes. In addition to her extensive studio credits as a movie score and jingle singer, some of Kim’s other recordings include Red Dragonfly in NY (JVC Victor) produced by Jazz Ambassador, Jiro Yoshida; Long Ago and Far Away (MCG Jazz), an original children’s radio show; and guest appearances on An Afternoon in Rio (MCG Jazz) with extraordinary guitarist Joe Negri (Handyman for Mr. Rogers); Two Worlds with Boston based band El Eco; and Mark Shilansky’s Join the Club release. Ms. Nazarian also specializes in teaching vocal technique and the art of ensemble singing. Kim has conducted the New York and Arizona All State Jazz Choirs, and many all area and district jazz choirs in the U.S. Her highly acclaimed workshops have been presented at JEN and many state MEA conferences. The near future holds a solo CD release for Kim entitled, Some Morning. Remarkable guests include: Paquito D’Rivera; Gary Burton; John Pizzarelli, and Sean Jones. Kim is a magna cum laude graduate of Ithaca College. She presently resides on a 6.5 acre farm in Oberlin, Ohio with her husband, son and two cats.

New York Voices (continued) Peter Eldridge continues to combine his talents into an eclectic mix of performing, composing and arranging, recording, as well as teaching (after almost 20 years at the Manhattan School of Music as the head of its graduate jazz voice department, Peter joined the voice faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston this past fall). Peter was also recently asked to be artist-in-residence at Western Michigan University. To this date he has released four solo recordings. Stranger in Town, characterized by its bittersweet swing, garnered Best Jazz CD of the year by Boston radio station WICN, and Fool No More was full of Peter’s evocative original music in a sophisticated pop setting. Both were released on Rosebud Records. Following on the heels of those albums was Decorum, a 2005 release of originals. Downbeat was noted as saying, “If musical intelligence and artistry were prompters to marketplace success, Decorum would grant him stardom.” Finally, the latin-inspired Mad Heaven was released in 2011 on the Palmetto label. “Mad Heaven showcases Eldridge as a major player in vocal jazz, an artist of extraordinary depth and conviction” (Jazz Review).

Peter is a founding member of New York Voices, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and has recorded eight albums with the group, including New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band Cologne released in 2013 and Let it Snow, the group’s first holiday album, also released in 2013. Two projects they collaborated on received a Grammy award and Latin Grammy award (one with the Count Basie Orchestra, the other with Paquito D’Rivera). The group continues to make numerous guest appearances and tour internationally, with appearances including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Kennedy Center. In addition, compositions by Mr. Eldridge have been included on albums by many other artists. Minds of Their Own, written with Brazilian composer-performer Ivan Lins, was included on Nancy Wilson’s R.S.V.P. (Rare Songs, Very Personal) on the MCG Jazz Label, which won the 2004 Grammy award for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Difficult was recorded by Cuban saxophonist-clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera for his The Jazz Chamber Trio, a 2005 release on Chesky Records. Postcards and Messages was recorded on Denise Donatelli’s 2012 Grammy nominated album Soul Shadows. Difficult was also used in comedian Zach Galafianakis’ DVD Live from the Purple Onion. Jane Monheit, who was at one time one of Mr. Eldridge’s many talented students, features Peter’s song Surrender as the title track on her acclaimed 2007 CD and also features the Eldridge

New York Voices (continued) duet Around Us, based on a James Thurber quote, on her 2003 Encoded Music DVD, Live from the Rainbow Room. Jane and Peter also recorded a duet for her 2012 album Home titled It’s Only Smoke. One of his many choral pieces, simply titled Prayer, was recorded by New York City’s own Marble Collegiate Sanctuary Choir, on its recording With Many Voices. His arrangement of the indie-pop band Elbow’s song Mirrorball was just recorded by the choral group Chanticleer for its most recent album Something New. In spring 2008, Peter was invited to join Kurt Elling, Jon Hendricks, and Mark Murphy for a “concept concert.” the Four Brothers. He is also a member of the vocal group Moss, which combines the talents of Luciana Souza, Kate McGarry, Theo Bleckmann and Lauren Kinhan. The debut album by Moss was named one of the best CDs of the past decade by Downbeat. Peter continues to perform with his own band in venues domestically and internationally. He has also recently begun a new duo called Foolish Hearts with bassist Matt Aronoff which just released its first studio project (an

EP titled New Definition) and has already had two tours of Europe and the States. Peter has also worked with Bobby McFerrin (lending his voice to McFerrin’s recent VOCAbuLarieS project), Michael Brecker, Meredith Monk, Fred Hersch, George Benson, Kenny Werner, David Byrne, Jim Hall, Larry Goldings, the Roches, Jonatha Brooke, Bill Charlap, Betty Buckley, Joshua Redman, Janis Siegel, Denise Donatelli and many others. Peter recently wrote the musical score with composer/conductor Adam Waite for the PBS documentary film, No Job for a Woman, which tells the account of women reporters in World War II, as well as writing his first full-fledged musical with Chicago playwright Cheri Coons about the life, loves and art of Austrian painter Gustav Klimt. Peter’s music was recently featured in NYC’s Playwright’s Horizons production of a new play called THIS by Melissa Gibson. He is regularly asked to lead master classes and workshops around the world, and as guest conductor has directed All State groups including New York, Colorado, Iowa, Pennsylvania, and Illinois.

New York Voices (continued) Vocalist and composer Lauren Kinhan has been creating genremerging music for years as evidenced on her three solo CDs - Circle in a Square, Avalon and Hardly Blinking - and her contributions to New York Voices’ recordings. In 2017, she releases her first all-standard CD paying tribute to the great jazz vocalist Nancy Wilson. Her musical ideas shake up traditional confines and create a listening experience led by an accomplished creative and curious mind. Circle in a Square has solidifed Lauren’s place in the composer circle with her latest project garnering accolades; “The melody and narrative are all on stage. You need to keep coming back to this to get the whole point of jazz,” said Ken Blanchard of JazznotesSDP, and Richard Kamins of Step Tempest wrote, “…it’s the strength of the songs and the vocals that makes the deepest impression. Ms. Kinhan’s emotional delivery, her ability to bend a note to make a word sustain, and the poetry is a joy to return to time and again.” Lauren’s training in jazz and deep connection to the singer/songwriter narrative have developed a voice and style that is expressive and fearless while her love of prose keeps her dreaming of ways to lead her listeners on different adventures.

Circle in a Square was partially funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign and released in January 2014 to rave reviews. Lauren partnered with Elliot Scheiner (Steely Dan, Fleetwood Mac) to produce the recording featuring the amazing talents of Ben Wittman (drums), Andy Ezrin (piano), Dave Finck (bass), and Will Lee (bass) as the core underbelly. The project also features special guests Randy Brecker, Romero Lubambo, Chuck Loeb, Donny McCaslin, Joel Frahm, Gary Versace and Peter Eldridge. It’s another collection of her original songs with a wide range of stories told through mood struck landscapes. Of the compositions, Allaboutjazz said, “the opening tune is the title piece and is such a perfectly constructed song with a jazz-pop sensibility, it might be the contemporary missing link of what Frank Sinatra was in the 1940s and ’50s.” And Christopher Loudon of Jazz Times wrote, “She has never shone brighter.” Since 1992, Lauren has been a member of the New York Voices. She jas enjoyed a career that has taken her all over the world and allowed her to work with some of music’s greats like Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Bobby McFerrin, Paquito D’Rivera, Jon Hendricks, Annie Ross, Ivan Lins and The Manhattan Transfer. In 2013, NYV celebrated their 25th Anniversary releasing two new projects, New York Voices Live with the WDR Big Band, and the much anticipated and ravely reviewed holiday project, Let it Snow. New York Voices (continued) growing list of programs keep them busy with world class symphonies and big bands and their successful education division has grown from offering individual master classes and workshops while on the road to creating the annual New York Voices Vocal Jazz Camp, which attracts students of all ages and phases of life and from all over the world. Lauren’s versatility as a composer is evidenced in her contributions to New York Voices CDs over the years, and co-founding two other super groups, Moss and JaLaLa. Moss, made up of Luciana Souza, Kate McGarry, Theo Bleckmann, Peter Eldridge and Lauren, released their self-titled CD, Moss, in 2008 to rave reviews. In 2010, it was included in DownBeat’s ‘Best CDs of the 2000s’ issue. JaLaLa is short for Janis Siegel (The Manhattan Transfer), Laurel Massé (founding member of The Manhattan Transfer) and Lauren Kinhan, and they released their tribute to Johnny Mercer, That Old Mercer Magic, in 2009. Lauren’s debut solo project, Hardly Blinking, was produced by legendary Phil Ramone who described Lauren as a true songstress, along with Frank Filipetti and Rob Mounsey. It was mixed by Frank and Elliot Scheiner in 2000. It shows off the influence that Stevie Wonder, Carole King, Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell had on her early writing. The collection of songs were pulled directly from a

live performance at the Bitter End in New York City that Phil attended and then signed her on the spot. Expect categories to be dashed with rock anthems sitting next to art pieces. Ask Amelia, I Saw Love Today and Heaven and Earth are particular high notes. In 2010, EOne Entertainment picked up Lauren’s sophomore CD, Avalon, which she co-produced with Ben Wittman. Avalon incorporates more of her jazz background with her singer/ songwriter predilection and takes a good look at the passage of time. It is a project rich with well crafted arrangements highlighting Lauren’s voice and writing, and features some of New York’s finest musicians: Romero Lubambo, Donny McAslin, Andy Ezrin, Kate McGarry, Peter Eldridge and Joel Frahm. On the track, Here After, Jonatha Brooke sings the duet while Rob Mounsey pens an exquisite string arrangement. The sophisticated and nuanced attention to detail is present throughout the recording. You can hear Lauren’s voice on the multi-Grammy nominated Bobby McFerrin project VOCAbuLaireS and Ornette Coleman’s 1996 release Sound Museum Three Women. She toured with Ornette, culminating with his 1997 Lincoln Center retrospective, Civilization featuring Billie Higgins, Charlie Haden and Gerrie Allen.
