And Then, There Was The Night By ROBERT B. D’ANGELO Director, Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center, 1970-1975 It was a Thursday in July of 1970. I was the orchestra manager of the New Haven Symphony and the director of the Woosley Hall Concert Series for Yale University when I received a phone call from Robert W. Marvel, the recently minted dean of Fine Arts at SUNY Fredonia. “We would like to talk to you about becoming the director of the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center,” he opened. “Can you be here on Monday?” Not knowing where Fredonia was, I said I would drive up on Monday morning. I clearly had no idea where Fredonia was. ‘If you do,” he opined “you might get here by dark if you don’t get lost”. Bob Marvel met me at the Buffalo Airport mid morning on Monday and before I left the next day, I had accepted an offer of employment to begin in late August. My four years in Fredonia were the most magical of my life to date and have remained so all of these years. I cut my teeth as an arts administrator in Fredonia and I could fill this whole program booklet with my memories. Alas, I have not been given that luxury. For most of you the names on

the performance spaces in this building - Harry King, Bob Marvel and Alice Bartlett - are just names on the wall. For me, they were friends and/or colleagues. I well remember their contributions to the arts in Fredonia. There was the night I will always remember. I met a man who if he was not then, would soon become the most famous man and face in the world. His name, Muhammad Ali. After a fiveyear suspension from boxing for refusing to step forward and be inducted into the military, he had recently been given permission to box again, and after a few tune up fights, was cleared to fight Joe Frazier for the World Heavyweight Championship. For some inexplicable reason, he was doing a short lecture tour so he could pay for his training camp expenses in Pennsylvania. His lecture was entitled The Intoxication of Life, although he repeatedly mispronounced it as “intossification.” About 20 minutes before the scheduled start time, Ali asked me how many people were out there. Not wanting to hurt his feelings, I lied and told him 700 or so. There were only about 400 but I knew there would be more when he started. “How many does it hold” he asked. I told him 1,200.

“That’s not so good, but it is better than Joe Frazier would draw for a lecher (sic).” No matter how bad, it had to be better that Frazier. When I first arrived in Fredonia in the late summer of 1970 it seemed to rain nearly ever day for the first six weeks or so. I asked my secretary when the rain would stop and she said “Oh, in a few weeks when the snow starts. And it did. I remember many of the highlights of my career in Fredonia happened on a snowy or snow covered evening. There was the night when we hosted a concert version of Jesus Christ Superstar. This was only the second performance ever of what was to become the Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice classic Broadway show. Until a few days earlier it had only been a record album. This production began at the University of Indiana and featured many of the people on the original album and later the Broadway show. This concert version was shut down by injunction three of four performances later because the producers had failed to secure the necessary rights. I can find no historical record of this brief tour, but I know it happened, I was there.

famous Actress in the British Theater starred in Hamlet on the concert hall stage. She had always wanted to play the role of Hamlet, and on this night, after a less than stellar performance, we shared a glass of champagne in her dressing room to celebrate her 75th birthday, making her the oldest performer ever to play Hamlet, and a woman at that. As we walked out to her car, which was parked next to the loading dock, there was a young student/stage hand leaning against the wall, exhausted. Upon seeing her, Dame Judith exclaimed “Young lady, you look as though you have played Hamlet tonight...funny, I do not feel as though I have,” and then strode off into the snowy night with a flourish of her scarf. Many of the special nights included a late night after performance dinner at the Dunkirk Road home (a former brewery) of Harry John Brown, a distinguished university professor and conductor of the College Orchestra. On one of those wintry nights the guest was Edward Villella, then the most important of male dancers in the United States and star of the New York City Ballet. On this night he appeared with the Boston Ballet. The performance and the dinner were special.

There Was The Night Another late night dinner at the former brewery had as its guest of honor Van Cliburn, then the most noted classical pianist in the world, who had presented a recital earlier that evening. Both Harry John and I were friends with the master from our earlier careers. My wife, as always, cooked the steaks and long after midnight Harry John convinced Cliburn to rehearse with the College Symphony the next morning. The orchestra just happened to be learning (yeah, just happened) The Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 with the college orchestra the next morning. This was the piece that made Cliburn world famous as he played it to win the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow 15 years earlier.

Special to me was the night we presented the North American premier performance of Mummenshanz, a mask and mime theater company from Switzerland. This show was particularly special for me because I went on to be one of the two co-producers of a three-plus year Broadway run and several national and international tours in the late 1970s and eighties. As I said, my memories of Fredonia and the Michael C. Rockefeller could fill this book, and my recollections represent less that 10 percent of the Center’s five decade history. Perhaps the directors who followed me could add to this story and create a complete history of this wonderful place in this magical town. And then, there was the night...

The Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center, seen from the southeast near Maytum Hall, as it appeared in the fall of 1969.

In the beginning: Remembering Rockefeller Arts Center in 1969 By TED DEDEE Director, Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center, 1974-1978

I can honestly say I was there at the beginning – the opening of the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center. I was a Music Education major at the time, but I was at a crossroads of my student life searching for an alternative career. The arts center was under construction when I came to Fredonia as a freshman. Little did I realize my future was in plain sight, let alone that I would become the third director of the Rockefeller Arts Center beginning in the Fall of 1974.

But I regress. I was there the day then Governor Nelson Rockefeller came to campus in the Spring of 1969 to dedicate the building named after his late son. Clint Norton, first director of the arts center, had taken me under his wing, became my first mentor, gave me the opportunity to help him open the arts center, and opened my eyes to arts center management and arts presenting. I finished my degree two years later with a career path clearly in sight. After a short time in the military, Dean Robert Marvel invited me to return to Fredonia to work for a short time with Bob D’Angelo, second director. Continued

In the Beginning During the Spring of 1974, the Rockefeller Arts Center hosted a SUNY-wide arts festival where students and faculty descended upon our campus for three days of music, dance and theater performances and art exhibits. It was a massive undertaking, all coordinated with us by Patricia Kerr Ross in Albany. I’ve been fortunate to have met so many famous people in my career – arts and non-arts related. At Fredonia, I remember meeting Martha Graham whose dance troupe was there for a performance in what was then the College Theater (now Marvel Theater). She gave a master class, seated like royalty center stage, for students and faculty in awe of this legend. Then there was Michael Tilson Thomas, a very young new music director who came to conduct the Buffalo Philharmonic in King Concert Hall. But the one event, not a performance, that will live in my memory was the morning that someone ran to my office telling me to come to King Concert Hall immediately. When I arrived, I saw our nine-foot Steinway piano on the stage floor completely turned over on its top! The image still in my head is one of a giant dead bug laying upside down with three legs erect. It was the most horrific thing that could ever happen to a

piano. But, how could this have ever happened? It turns out the piano was left on stage from a performance the night before, but it had apparently been left with a portion of the piano on the orchestra lift. Someone unknown had pushed the lift button backstage without looking to see it was safe to do so, and, well … it happened. The piano flipped over. We immediately called the college piano tuner, and with several of us now onsite we got the piano upright only showing minor wood surface damage. But the true test was when the piano tuner began testing the keyboard, only to find the entire piano was perfectly in tune – only a quarter step flat! We were all relieved it could have been much, much worse. There are so many memories of my days at the Rockefeller Arts Center as a student and as managing director for four years. I have since managed seven other arts organizations in my career, four included opening new arts venues. I credit many people at Fredonia in helping me along my first path - Robert Marvel, Howard Marsh, Oscar Remick, Tom Carpenter, Jack Cogdill, Ted Janello, Gary Eckert, Harry John Brown, Rudy Emilson, Bob D’Angelo, and Clint Norton. No doubt, these people and many other plus the opportunity at Fredonia and the Rockefeller Arts Center set the direction of my career and my life in the arts.
