In Bronx show, home is where the art is By Will Speros wsperos@riverdalepress.com

T

he Bronx Arts Alliance is responding to the tone of the times. “I think this organization’s mission and one of the missions of BronxArtSpace is to maintain and sustain the multicultural nature of the Bronx at this time,” said Linda Cunningham, the director of BronxArtSpace, one of two venues for the new exhibit “The Bronx Speaks: Our Home.” “Faced with rising rents and a lot of real estate development, we are really committed to multiple identities in this borough,” she added. In addition to BronxArtSpace in Mott Haven, the Andrew Freedman Home at 1125 Grand Concourse will also showcase artwork from “Our Home,” which seeks to illuminate the many identities of the Bronx. Photographer Rhynna M. Santos, a member of the Bronx Photo League, said she was eager for the show to convey the spirit of the borough in a positive way. “There isn’t that level of respect or understanding. Everybody deserves respect and deserves a voice. I think that is a very beautiful message, that there is a point, people are here with a particular point of view,” Ms. Santos said. “People of color rarely, if ever, get an opportunity to re-find themselves.” Ms. Santos’ work was featured in the Bronx Documentary Center’s Jerome Avenue Workers Project last year, which is also on display at BronxArtSpace. “Just dealing with issues of encroaching gentrification in the Bronx, it’s vital,” Ms. Santos said. “This area is so incredibly special. We want to continue that conversation... We want to continue to humanize those affected most by this possible rezoning.” Though deeply personal, the artwork by painter Osaretin Ugiagbe reflects the humanizing trials and tribulations experienced by Bronx residents. “Being from the Bronx, being an artist, we also go through things here, downtimes,” he said. “We also go through things and it’s my way of expressing that anxiety.

This whole fear of the future kind of led me to creating something.” Curated by Sarah Corona for the third consecutive year in the “Bronx Speaks” series, “Our Home” responds to the many fears surrounding displacement and gentrification in the face of possible rezoning. “The exhibition itself wants to speak to people who are not from the Bronx who do not know that there are many, many artists, poets and creative minds living in the Bronx,” she said. In addition to amplifying Bronxites’ voices, the show also explores the many definitions of home. “It can be a feeling of belonging to a person or a place where you find yourself being yourself,” Ms. Corona explained. “I

was looking for strong artworks that would speak in a way toward the viewer and I was looking to have as much variety as possible.” Ms. Corona said she hopes the show’s variety can shed light on the “richness and vibrancy of the Bronx,” and can ignite further dialogue in the social conversations taking place in the borough. “It’s a stunning variety of art, very engaging” Ms. Cunningham said of the show. “We love our cultural heritage and we want to see it represented and maintained and to give it a voice.” “The Bronx Speaks: Our Home” runs through Saturday, March 26 at the Andrew Freedman Home, located at 1125 Grand Concourse, and BronxArtSpace, at 305 E. 140th St.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, March 10, 2016 - B5

Home of the week Terhi Edwards and William Beltran of Douglas Elliman Real Estate

Unprecedented space abounds in luxurious 4-BR

T

Light pours into Skyview unit #18JK and brings it to life. The four-bedroom/three-bathroom dwelling is generously sized to accommodate a variety of needs. The spacious living room includes hardwood oors and catches plenty of light from the west. The dining area is attached nearby. The renovated kitchen is rich with granite counter space and plenty of room to store all the necessary goods. A breakfast counter is also featured. Each carpeted bedroom is sizeable enough to ďŹ t beds of any size without sacriďŹ cing additional room. Plentiful closets throughout the apartment make storage an

afterthought. Porcelain allows each cozy bathroom to shine. Located at 5700 Arlington Ave., the expansive views that Skyview-on-the-Hudson is known for can be appreciated with even more enjoyment thanks to the unit’s personal terrace. The co-op includes a 24-hour concierge, a ďŹ tness center with a pool, tennis courts, basketball courts and a dog park. A shuttle is provided for Metro-North riders and weekly transportation for shopping at Fairway is also available. According to Terhi Edwards and William Beltran from Douglas Elliman Real Estate, #18JK is priced at $869,000 with $2,656 in monthly maintenance.

Top, an expansive living space leads into a dining area. Above, the renovated kitchen offers ample counter space. Far left, a regal view of the Hudson River and the Palisades. Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. Sports ‘Three-Peat’ eludes Manhattan College By Sean Brennan

we’d make our run.” “We’re used to these times,” said Stores, who finished with seven points and four assists. “We know when we’re down we look at each other and we know we’ve been through this.”

sports@riverdalepress.com As the final seconds were ticking off Manhattan’s season, as they were about to go down to Siena, 89-76, in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) quarterfinals at the Times Union Center in Albany, head coach Steve Masiello wanted to give his two seniors a proper sendoff. The first to leave the court and join Masiello on the Jaspers bench was Shane Richards, the under-recruited prospect out of York Prep high school in Manhattan who blossomed into the Jaspers’ all-time three-point leader. The next to come off was senior point guard RaShawn Stores, Manhattan’s quarterback and the one who had been through all the wars with Richards and Masiello. “I went and got Shane with 38 seconds to go,” Masiello said. “Then with 23 seconds left, I took RaShawn out. It was just a sign of respect for what those two accomplished in their career here at Manhattan. Yes, that duo did have themselves a résumé-filling career in Riverdale as they played in three postseason tournaments, appeared in three MAAC championship games, won two of them, reached the NCAA Tournament twice and were part of 71 career wins as Jaspers. But the duo was unable to complete the “Three-Peat” which had been the team’s rallying cry all season as the thirdseeded Saints used a 46-21 advantage on the boards and made 35 free throws to Manhattan’s 14 as the dream came to an end in Albany last Saturday night. It was a dream, though, that didn’t die easily. Manhattan was trailing, 6650, with just over 11 minutes to play and the raucous Times Union crowd — an arena which doubles as Siena’s home court — was deafening. But the one thing MAAC opponents learned over the last few years is that this Manhattan team could never be left for dead. There was always going to be a run coming, and it came again Saturday

MANHATTAN COLLEGE’S RaShawn Stores in a game against conference rival Iona in February 2015. night over a six-minute span and when Rich Williams nailed a jumper with 5:03 to play, suddenly Manhattan was down just 73-70, the crowd was no longer deafening and the dream was still alive for the Jaspers as they looked to become just the third team in the MAAC’s 35-year history to pull off a three-peat “People outside of our team would not know but I cannot ex-

press how much faith we have in what we do and what we believe in,” Masiello said. “We don’t look at scores. I promise you we don’t. We look at field goal percentage defense in four minute segments, threepoint line defense and rebounding. We knew we were getting slaughtered on the boards but we knew if we could get some stops and not let them shoot

the three the momentum would change. There’s been one game in my five years here where we didn’t have our run. That was versus St. Peter’s this year when we just couldn’t make a shot. So we knew we were going to have our run. It was inevitable because of the way we play and our style. It’s very hard to be great against us for 40 minutes. So that was a given

But unfortunately this time, the run was not enough. Siena would soon bang the lead back to double digits and Manhattan’s hopes of carving out a little piece of MAAC history was over. And with both Richards and Stores playing the final game of their stellar careers, the last links to the past two MAAC title teams were now done. “It’s been special but special is not really the right word for it,” Masiello said. “It’s almost been like, once we got together it became understood. We didn’t talk about a lot of stuff. We just knew what was ahead of us and what we needed to do and we went about our business. I use the phrase blind faith a lot and I think it’s accurate. But it was more like a blind destiny like we all knew where this was going and we never doubted it, never questioned it at all.” Yes, it has been quite a run in Riverdale the last four seasons. “If you told me in April 2011 [when Masiello was hired at Manhattan] that we would go to two NCAA tournaments, three MAAC championships, three postseason tournaments, [have the] biggest turnaround in wins in the country, I’m taking it and I’m a very happy man,” Masiello said. Masiello helped engineer that biggest turnaround in the nation when he took over a team that had won just six games the previous year and in his first year won 21. Williams led all scorers in the game with 26 points while Tyler Wilson added 14 points with Richards finishing with 12 and Calvin Crawford with 11. The Jaspers, who played shorthanded for the bulk of the season, finished the year 13-18. So what’s it like not to be in a title game for the first time in

four years and not have another game to get ready for? “I’m dealing with issues I haven’t had to deal with before since I’ve been here,” Masiello said. “My first year we went to the CIT [College Insider Tournament]. We’re not playing on a Monday night [for the title], guys are on a spring break for the first time in my career, it’s just things that I’m unfamiliar with that I will never let happen again. These are things I’m not OK with and I’m not good with. I have all the happiness and joy for the other teams but we can’t go on this way. This is not what we do.”

Looking ahead Masiello said he will now close this chapter of his career with this team and look to a start a new one next fall. And he’ll also be looking for the next group to lead the Jaspers back to where Masiello feels they belong — back in the MAAC title game next March. “In three weeks or so I’ll reflect back on chapter one and that’s kind of how I look at this,” Masiello said. “I think the thing that gets lost a lot is that when RaShawn and Shane came here they didn’t know what this was going to be. They came here to build something. Now the building has been built and now it’s time to decorate it and that’s up to Rich [Williams], Tyler [Wilson], Zane [Waterman] and Calvin [Crawford]. That second tier needs to take over. When [former player] Emmy [Andujar], RaShawn, Shane and those guys came in it was like, ‘We got a tough job to do. How are we going to build this thing up?’ And they did it. So it’s been built there’s no denying that. This thing has been built.” As for Stores, after the game he performed one last act as captain as he walked around the losing locker room to console his teammates. “I went into [the locker room] and said, ‘Keep your heads up. No reason to be down,’” Stores said. “It’s been a great journey. If you asked me this five years ago I would never have thought of this. This is still a dream to me.”

Tough loss for Lehman Lightning at tourney By Sean Brennan

championship. “Of course you want to win every game, but right after the loss we had a team meeting and we went over things and everybody was upbeat,” Harrison said. “We had a magical season, we got the school’s first championship since 2007 and we accomplished a lot throughout the season. Nobody was really down about it. It was all positives and we knew we just hung with one of the top teams in the country, they were a top five team all year. We felt we could have beaten them but this season it was a proud accomplishment for us. This loss didn’t define our season. We were still a championship team. If the moon and the stars had lined up we’d still be playing. But we’ll remember it as a great season and remember all the positives.”

sports@riverdalepress.com For a long time last Friday night, it looked a lot like Lehman’s magical season would extend for at least another day. From its 16-2 start in its NCAA Tournament Opening-Round game versus New York University, to holding the lead well into the fourth quarter — and not to mention having Amely Del Rosario, the City University of New York Athletic Conference’s (CUNYAC) Player of the Year, on its team — things were looking promising indeed for the Lightning. But after leading 37-28 at the half and still clinging to a 54-50 advantage after three quarters, NYU got a pair of free throws from Megan Dawe to grab its first lead of the game. Dawe then proceeded to convert three straight layups for a seven-point NYU lead and Lehman never could recover as the Lightning went down, 70-63, at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Lehman had come into the game winners of 11 of its previous 12 games, including the CUNYAC championship game win over Brooklyn College on Feb. 26. Despite having four players score in double figures in the game, the Lightning’s dream of a long run in the NCAA Tournament came to a sudden stop. “They did a tremendous job and they came out a little more aggressive than we did in the second half,” said Lehman head coach Eric Harrison, who earlier this season became the all-time wins leader in CUNYAC women’s basketball history. Lehman was limited somewhat for the second half as senior Yarmese Jones injured her ankle late in the first half and was playing at well below 100 percent the rest of the way. Being that Lehman generally plays a five-woman rotation with very little help from its’ bench, it all eventually caught up with the Lightning. “We only play five players and one of our five, Yasmae Jones,

Basketball round-up

LEHMAN COLLEGE’S Amely Del Rosario at the free point line last month in the Lightning’s victory over the Brooklyn Bulldogs. she injured her ankle toward the end of the second quarter so for the last 20 minutes she was pretty much playing hobbled,” Harrison said. “Without having a full five out there and really not having any reserves coming off the bench, it was pretty tough. We gave a good effort out there and until the last couple of minutes of the game we were still in it. We had our opportunities but I’m pretty proud of the way the team played. Senior Karrin Walker, whose father, Jerry, was a star for Seton Hall in the 1990s, led the Lightning with 20 points and 15 rebounds, her 13th double-double in her last 17 games. Rosario added 17 points with 11 assists, Jennifer Navarro chipped in with 12 points and Amari

Lightbourne had 10 points. The 12 points by Navarro helped the senior guard finish her career with 1,735 points, good for sixth all-time in the CUNYAC and second all-time at Lehman. But it just wasn’t enough to keep the dream alive for the Lightning.

Giving their all “I just think our team gave it all this season. We had a great season and I tell them that all the time,” Walker said. “We just came up short but I’m sure next season they’ll come back ready and hungry.” Unfortunately for Walker, she won’t be part of next season’s team, but Rosario will be and that alone is reason for opti-

mism at Lehman. “I just think this was a tough game. Everybody came out and played smart and came out aggressively but I think maybe we ran out of gas a little bit,” said Rosario, who was also crowned CUNYAC Tournament Most Valuable Player this season. “I just think we gave it our all to the end.” It will be tough for Harrison to say goodbye to his ultra-talented senior class as he sees Navarro, Walker, Lightbourne and Jones all leave Lehman in the spring. But he does maintain that the future is bright for the Lightning. “It’s definitely tough to say goodbye to them because they are such good players and they worked extremely hard for

us,” Harrison said. “They are some great players with great attitudes and some good leadership that we’ll be losing. But we’re excited about the future because we return the best player in the conference and one of the top players in the country in Amely Del Rosario, who will be a senior. So we’re excited about our prospects of adding some talented players to go along with her and hopefully we can be back next year.” Despite the loss, Harrison said there was no sadness following the game. Everyone in the Lehman locker room knew they had just finished a magical season, one that saw Lehman reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007 and, of course, claim that CUNYAC

The last two Riverdale-area high schools standing in the Public School Athletic League (PSAL) playoffs are no longer standing as both Clinton and American Studies saw their seasons come to an end last week. No. 1 Frederick Douglas 53, No. 16 Clinton 45: The Governors trailed by just four at the half but a huge third quarter by top-seeded Douglas helped end the season for Clinton in the PSAL ‘A’ playoffs. Jordan Cintron led the Guvs with 14 points and eight rebounds and Seydou Magassouba added 11 points and seven boards for Clinton, which finished its season with a 19-10 overall record. No. 2 Fannie Lou Hamer 52, No. 14 American Studies 43: The Senators saw senior Dylan Klein erupt for a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds and Chris Campuzano added 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a PSAL ‘B’ playoff game. The loss ends the Senators’ season as they finish with a 17-5 record.

THE HOMES OF VILLANOVA HEIGHTS*

The Ticket

Race enters the ring in Ramirez’s ‘The Royale’ newsroom@riverdalepress.com Playwright Marco Ramirez gives us a searing tour of early 20th-century Americana in “The Royale” at Lincoln Center Theater. The bloodsport of boxing is the venue, and the cruel engines of racism are the chords that snarl the play’s hero into a fateful alliance with victory. The ensemble is compelling and vivid in this journey through a backstage world into the inner life of an AfricanAmerican heavyweight champion. The tumultuous career of Jack Johnson provided Howard Sackler with the context for his 1969 Pulitzer Prizewinning play “The Great White Hope.” Ramirez takes a different approach, one that transcends a stage biography of an African-American folk hero. He does this with a canny impressionistic style, so that we share in the boxer’s vanity, brio and fear. The challenger, Fish, played by McKinley Belcher III with the right touch of hopeful eagerness, gives us another crucial perspective. Clarke Peters plays a grizzled corner man with a wise and prudent authority, and — take note, “Rocky” fans — there is a welcome avoidance of all cliché here. The circumstance may be boxing, but the story is universal, one of vitality versus oppression. Two characters bring the outside world into the confines of the ring. Max, a barker-promoter, is the profiteer in the traditional mold of middleman giving the masses “what they want.” John Lavelle lacks the gravitas to land the right combination for this role, especially

since he must control both the heavyweights and the audience he tries to drum into his tent. Montego Glover, as the champion’s sister, hurls herself into the fray with a bold clarity that forces both the boxer and the play onto a higher ground, a struggle far more complicated than any fistfight. To his surprise, the stakes escalate for the champion, Jay (Khris Davis), and transport the bout from the ring to the maelstrom of Jim Crow, where the everyday humiliations of African-Americans are ingrained in society, and the terror of the lynch mob casts a paralysis onto all attempts at change. “The Royale” overtakes its apparent nominal subject, and gives a sharp focus on the ugly stains of history, all to remind us of the distance travelled and the barriers that remain. Nick Vaughan’s set design and Rachel Chavkin’s direction serve the impression of thoughtful minds trapped by the conflict unfolding before us — a match rigged by the hateful realities of the day. The world of the boxer becomes a swirl of inner challenge and of attacks far deadlier than the fists of an opponent. Khris Davis captures the paradox of battle, circling the enemy, a haunted dynamo of pride. And then there is “the Royale” itself, a savage tradition, evoked here to great effect, an echo of Ralph Ellison’s stunning account in “Invisible Man,” and an exemplification of how disunity and crooked competition were forced upon a struggling people — all for laughs and a few lousy bucks. “The Royale” opened on March 7 at Lincoln Center Theater, located at 150 W. 60th St. in Manhattan.
