Early Childhood Program (Pre-Kindergarten)
Accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), RNH Early Chlldhood programs meet all New York State and NYC Department of Education standards. Programs are available for 3 year olds and 4 year olds (Full Day UPK) with a number of extended day options available.
School-Age Services
Our school-age programs provides a safe and secure environment for children in Kindergarten through 5th grade. We offer FUN high quality structured activities such as STEM, Visual Arts, Sports, Cooking, Dance and so much more. We provide homework support. Free pick up from PS 81 and PS 24 and care is available until 6pm. We have experienced and qualified staff, we provide school half day pick up and we are open FULL DAYS for Mid-Winter and Spring Break.
Youth Programs (6th through 12th Grades)
Our upgraded facility offers youth in grades 6-12 a safe, fun and relaxed environment to make friends and discover their potential. We offer three STEM-based SONYC programs for middle school students. The Hadley House, located at 5122 Post Road, is claimed by some to be the oldest house in the Bronx, despite the claim by nearby Van Cortlandt House. Still, it’s taken a major remodel and a little activism to make sure this house has lived through more than 250 years.

ome say it’s the oldest house in the Bronx. And no, we’re not talking about the Van Cortlandt House. Instead, it’s the Hadley House, located at 5122 Post Road, not far from where Broadway and West 251st Street meet, less than a mile from the Van Cortlandt House. Whether it’s the oldest or not is a good question historians have not been able to pin down. The primary stone portion was built in either 1747 or 1765, depending on whom you talk to. Construction of the Van Cortlandt House began in 1748, according to the museum that operates out of the house, enough to challenge the designation. Built by farmers William Hadley and George Hadley, it earned a significant expansion and remodel by famed Fieldston architect Dwight James Baum in the 1920s, giving it the look it has today. Yet, there were many who feared the house wouldn’t make it to today, especially after its sale in 1999 for $310,000 following the death of Florence Eisen, who lived in the home with her husband for more than six decades. Former editor Bernard L. Stein highlighted that com-

At the time, it was rumored a developer was interested in razing the historic building and constructing row houses like those already built next to it on Post Road. Saving Hadley House became an even bigger question mark when the bank that was handling the sale of the house as an estate trustee said it would not require any buyer to agree not to tear down the house. “Once the deed changed hands, any new owner could do as he pleased with the property,” a bank spokesman told Stein at the time. The house was sold to Peter Savasta and his wife, who had no plans to do anything with the house other than live in it. Not long after, the home received the landmark designation history lovers in the community sought. In February 2000, The New York Times shared some HADLEY HOUSE, page 13

During the Revolutionary War, it served as a guardhouse for Germans who were fighting alongside the colonists. And on a single night in 1783, some say it sheltered one of the most famous Americans of all time, George Washington. In his 1999 story, Stein shared an account of the house by turn-of-the-century historian Randall Comfort in 1903. “Hidden behind a mass of overhanging vines, just opposite the immense Parade Ground of Van Cortlandt Park, stands a small abode, containing one of the most curious rooms I ever happened to see. “The ‘Old Stone Room,’ they call it, and indeed it is nothing but a cellar room upstairs, the sides being the rough stone walls of the house itself, all neatly whitewashed, with stones of all sizes and kinds projecting out, quite far enough to hand one’s hat on.” Comfort once talked with an older man who lived in the house at the time, who was sitting out on the front porch. “Isn’t the owner proud of having such a quaint old building?” Comfort asked. “No indeed,” the old man replied. “He has often said he wished the old thing was down and out of the way.” 5291 Independence Avenue Page 23

‘Iron Horse’ breathed his last breath on Delafield
L
ou Gehrig lived the final two years of his life at 5204 Delafield Ave. — a three-story, Colonial style, wood-framed house — and it’s where he died on June 2, 1941. Tucked into a bend in the road just off the Henry Hudson Parkway, the house has undergone some changes in the more than seven decades since Gehrig lived there with his wife Eleanor, including updates to a porch and the kitchen. But many of the home’s features remained the same, including a lush surrounding yard, which probably offered the Yankee great a measure of tranquility. Residents have called life on Delafield Avenue a mix of urban and suburban, according to reports, not so different from when Gehrig was neighbor of former mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, who made the ballplayer the city’s parole commissioner in 1939 and lived five
minutes away on Goodridge Avenue. Over the years, fans have made the trek up to rustic Riverdale from far-flung corners of the city to pay homage to where the Yankee legend lived and perished. Nicknamed the “Iron Horse” for his durability, Gehrig held the record for most consecutive games played with 2,130 before Cal Ripken Jr., surpassed him in 1995. Gehrig’s career ended after he was struck with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis — now often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease — which destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. “I may have had a tough break,” Gehrig told fans at Yankee Stadium in his famous retirement speech in 1939, “but I have an awful lot to live for.” — Zak Kostro

A true Riverdale original
W
hen the Victorian home on 5291 Independence Ave., was first built in the 19th century, it might have been impossible to believe that someday — like in 2018 — it would sell for $4.2 million. But it did. Considered one of the original homes that made up the small enclave where Riverdale gets its name, it boasts the work of acclaimed architect Frederick Clarke Withers, who added a picturesque roof and porches. One of its most famed residents was Benno Schmidt Jr., a Yale University alum who would go on to become president of that Ivy League school in 1986. He also served as dean of Columbia Law School, and was later appointed by then mayor Rudy Giuliani to oversee the City University of New York system. Charles W. Foster was one of the original homeowners in Riverdale, an auctioneer who owned this particular estate in 1853. Foster was a wealthy businessman who, along with four other entrepreneurs, wanted to transform Riverdale into a suburban community. Foster is now revered as one of the “founding fathers” of Riverdale. — Simone Johnson

A Powerful Home
L
ike another legend he personally attracted to Riverdale — Lou Gehrig — Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia didn’t spend more than a couple years in his local home, a Tudor on Goodridge Avenue. The man whose name would be immortalized by one of New York City’s major airports paid just $40,000 for this home in 1945 — which today is valued at $3.5 million. He also would die in it, just two years later, after battling pancreatic cancer. He was just 64. It was built in 1915, but famed Florida architect Dwight James Baum would add a two-car garage in 1929. It features eight bedrooms and six bathrooms, as well as a formal dining room overlooking a garden. — Michael Hinman

Van Cortlandt House — a living piece of history
I
f walls could talk at the Van Cortlandt House — between its fieldstone and chandeliers — there would never-ending novels. The house is considered by many to be the oldest in the Bronx. Construction began in 1748, and the home has been passed down though generations of Van Cortlandts — except for by the man who commissioned it in the first place, Frederick Van Cortlandt, who died before it was finished. The house has literally stood the test of time and history. It was used during the Revolutionary War by celebrated military officers like Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur
and George Washington. During the war, troops from both the British and American side found their way into the Van Cortlandt home on several occasions, since the mansion was in an in-between zone during battle. The property was sold in 1889 to the city, which in turn made it and the house part of a public parkland. The house was turned into a museum in 1897, and seven decades later, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 6036 Broadway, Van Cortlandt Park, the museum offers self-guided tours and is open every day except Monday. — Simone Johnson

An escape from city ugly
erched among precipitous cliffs along Palisade Avenue in Spuyten Duyvil, the Villa Charlotte Brontë offers spectacular Hudson River views. Built in 1926 by lawyer, writer and developer John J. McKelvey — who also happened to be the first editor in chief of the Harvard Law Review — the building offers fodder for those “hungry for the majesty of the river,” according to an advertisement McKelvey placed in The New York Times. Wary of what he called the “city ugly” — development creeping into northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx — McKelvey started buying property and selling it off to those he believed would be like-minded neighbors, according to published reports, offering private houses for sale through the 1910s. Considered McKelvey’s master work, the Brontë was preceded by the Villa Rosa Bonheur, built in 1924, named after a radical 19th century French painter, which consisted of seven co-op apartments combined into what appears to be a huge rambling cottage. In 1926 or 1927, McKelvey built a third apartment house, the Villa Victoria, on the next lot south. McKelvey’s architect, Robert W. Gardner, designed the Brontë’s 17 co-op apartments in two sections, separated by a central courtyard, individual apartments were linked by walkways, stairs and stone arches. — Zak Kostro

Participants will learn about policing, the law and how to make an arrest. Upon completion, students are required to take an exam.
