Is your ex a pest?

The Bronx Zoo can help wsperos@riverdalepress.com

ach Valentine’s Day, romantics old and young are tasked with finding a perfect way to say “I love you.” The standard flowers and chocolate are safe, but do not exactly radiate originality. For those looking to give a gift unlike any other, the Bronx Zoo is there to help. This February marks the fourth year of the zoo’s Name a Roach program. Orchestrated by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), the organization that operates the Bronx Zoo, the undertaking encourages valentines to name a cockroach after their significant other for the price of $10. Those of us without valentines this year are also welcome to participate in the program and name a cockroach after a dreaded ex. Talk about closure. The zoo offered a new option this year that gifted roach-themed treats by Nunu Chocolate for the price of $25. A colorful certificate is also provided via email to inform that special someone or that regrettable old flame how they have been immortalized. The Bronx Zoo, located at 2300 Southern Blvd., is home to more than 10,000 cockroaches. The specimens in this year’s naming program are Madagascar hissing cockroaches, the largest roach species on the planet. The critters get some prominent play in the zoo’s popular “Madagascar!” exhibit, which showcases the indigenous wildlife of the African island nation such as Nile crocodiles and several species of lemur. Despite the perception most New Yorkers have, 99 percent of cock-

roach species are not classified as pests and often avoid human spaces, according to National Geographic. Largely nocturnal, Madagascar hissing cockroaches are herbivores that tend to dwell on forest floors. A small colony could reduce a carrot to crumbs in a single day. The average life expectancy of these insects is around 2 to 5 years in the wild. Those especially wary of bugs can take some comfort knowing that these roaches are completely flightless, unlike some of their more fearsome cousins. The hissing referred to in the roaches’ name is a sound that they emit in battle. Roaches who come out victorious in a face-off release louder pitches in order to indicate hierarchy, a trend that is highly unique among insects. Sometimes the roaches hiss as part of their mating ritual, making them especially apt to be the face of Valentine’s Day at the zoo. Donations go toward WCS’ conservation efforts to protect wildlife and preserve natural habitats around the planet. The organization operates four zoos and one aquarium in New York City and oversees conservation work in almost 60 countries around the globe. Stop by the ongoing “Madagascar!” exhibit any time to catch the cockroaches in action. And keep in mind the sound of hissing may just mean that love is in the air.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, February 4, 2016 - B5

Home of the week Pammi Anandani of Halstead Property

Remodeling turns home into spacious two-bedroom A stonework design on the oor and walls brings a modern are to the bathroom, too. The master bedroom has no fewer than three available closets. Although the building provides a laundry room, washers and dryers are permitted in the unit at the discretion of the tenant. The same goes for pets. Additional storage space is offered in the building, which is an easy walk from restaurants, shopping and transport. According to Manjit “Pammiâ€? Anandani from Halstead Property, 3D is priced at $284,000 with $682 in maintenance.

Clockwise from top: The large living room gets plenty of natural light. The master bedroom features three closets. The kitchen and bathroom boast handsome stonework. Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to advertising@ riverdalepress.com.

A DAVID A. STEIN Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy player drives the lane on Jan 29. RKA defeated DeWitt Clinton High School, 56-42.

RKA stuns DeWitt Clinton in pivotal game By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com When Clinton and the Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy (RKA) took the floor last Friday night in a key Public School Athletic League (PSAL) divisional battle, there was plenty on the line for both teams. For Clinton, a victory over RKA coupled with a win over Evander in their final regular season game would hand the Governors the Bronx ‘A’ West Division title and a prime spot in both the Bronx Borough Championships and the citywide PSAL playoffs later this month. For RKA, a team that is coming off a two-win season and has not tasted postseason basketball in several years, two wins in its last three games would send the Tigers into the PSAL playoffs, a feat many thought not possible coming into the year. And there were two other things to consider: when the two teams met earlier this season, it was Clinton that waltzed to a 16-point win on its home court and RKA had not defeated the Governors since early in Obama’s first term. David vs. Goliath? Maybe not, but pretty close.

“I’ve been playing varsity since my freshman year and since then we had never beaten Clinton and I had that in the back of my mind since early in the week,” RKA’s Steven Calvo said. “So I let all the guys know, ‘Hey, this is something that hasn’t been done in a while so if we could get this win, it would be big.’” So RKA went out and promptly took the lead at 14-12 on a layup by William Feldman with 5:27 to play in the first quarter. The Tigers never relinquished the lead as RKA stunned Clinton, 56-42, last Friday at RKA. It just may have been the program’s most important victory in years. “We won two games last year and I was thinking about not coming back this year, but I told my wife I didn’t want to go out with two wins,” RKA coach Jason Zulauf said. “I have two young kids, so she wants me home. But I knew I had a core of six players and we were going to add some pieces so I really thought we could do it this year.” The first sign that Clinton might be in for a long afternoon came at halftime. As the horn sounded to end the first half, Clinton players stood around almost in stunned disbelief as the scoreboard read RKA 29, Clinton 19. Clinton came into the game sport-

ing a 17-3 record and is considered one of the top teams not only in the Bronx but across the city. So surprising? You could say that. As the second half tipped, off you waited for what you thought would be an inevitable run by Clinton to close the gap or even take the lead. But thanks to some stingy defense by the Tigers, that run never materialized. In fact, RKA proceeded to increase its lead as the second half wore on with a 22-point cushion (56-34) representing the Tigers’ largest lead of the game. In fact, the Governors never got any closer than eight points in the fourth quarter as RKA was stellar from start to finish. “I knew we had to play well to win because those guys have a football mentality,” Zulauf said. “They’re tough. We scored 56 points. I think we scored 36 the last time we played them. Our offense in the first half was excellent and we made our free throws. This is a huge confidence builder. I don’t think we’ve beaten them in seven years. This win was huge and to do it at home was great.”

Long lull Clinton head coach Chris Ballerini said his team’s long layoff due to Re-

gents testing played a part in the Governors’ flat performance. “It was Regents Week and we haven’t played in 10 days and our practices were here and there and that led to this letdown performance,” Ballerini said. “But that’s no excuse. The better team won.” The loss cost the Governors the Bronx ‘A’ West Division title, which will now go to Roosevelt, a team Clinton defeated twice during the regular season. It also may cost the Guvs a spot in the borough championships. “We finish in second place now and this loss hurts for playoff seeding as well as for the Bronx Borough Championships,” Ballerini said. “This is a bad loss for us. It’s not good for the committee looking at us. Not a good day.” The picture was far cheerier on the RKA side where suddenly the Tigers have visions of playoff basketball dancing in their heads. Coming off a twowin season, who’da thunk it? “I know the guys had it in the back of their minds that we needed to finish strong if we wanted to make the playoffs,” said Calvo, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. “It’s something we haven’t done here in the last six or seven years. So I think we came out with more toughness

and intensity than the first time we played them. Even early in the season we knew we could play with anyone in the Bronx ‘A’ Division so now after beating one of the best, if not the best, team in the Bronx ‘A’, I feel like we can play with anybody and beat anybody.” And with one more win, against either Morris or Walton, the Tigers of RKA just may get to prove that on the big stage of the PSAL citywide playoffs. “This was a great upset. They were ranked fifth in the city and we beat them,” said Arnolj Kukaj, who finished with nine points and 10 rebounds. “We’re always the underdogs. We always hear people saying, ‘Oh we’re going to beat them by 20’ because they only look at what we did last year. But now if we make the playoffs, that would mean everything to us. Especially since coach Zulauf is leaving, this is his last year. We want to end on the best note possible. If we win every game in the playoffs or we lose in the first round, we just want to make him proud.”

CMSV players give back through youth camp riel’s former teachers. “I always had a good relationship with them,” Curiel said. “I emailed them and asked them and they gave us the gym for free. That was great because ‘free’ is not a real word these days.” The first camp drew 25 participants, both boys and girls aged 6 to 14 years old, and both Curiel and Zeno, who said they became friends on the “very first day of freshman year” at Mount St. Vincent, said it was a success beyond their dreams.

By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com When the college year comes to a close each May, hundreds — what are we thinking? — millions of college students, finally free of papers, studying and exams, can’t wait to hit the beach, visit a barbecue or three or maybe just use their newlyfound freedom to catch up on a favorite hobby — sleeping in late. But Andrew Curiel and Francisco “Neeko” Zeno, a pair of basketball players at the College of Mount St. Vincent, had other ideas of how to pass those summer days. Curiel, of the Bronx, and Zeno, out of Manhattan, decided they wanted to give back somehow, do something more productive than hitting the party circuit or the snooze button. So the two, who grew up having their families pay their way through basketball camps as children, came up with the idea of creating a program for those who didn’t have the extra dollars to burn to send their child to camp. So the “Be You Stay True” program was born. And it appears to be off to a fine start. “I started it last May with my roommate, Neeko,” said Curiel, the Dolphins 6-foot-5 sophomore forward. “We were thinking of things we could do over the summer because we didn’t have jobs at the time so we wanted to do something productive. We always remembered going to camps over the summer as kids, basketball camps. But we also remembered we had to pay for it or our mothers had to pay

DREW CURIEL shoots while Francisco ‘Neeko’ Zeno looks on at the College of Mount St. Vincent gym. The duo runs a youth basketball program called Be You Stay True. for it, so it was kind of tough for us to attend those annually. So we wanted to do at least do a one-day camp just to get started and just give chances to the kids that we didn’t have.” The genesis of the name even has its own story. “I went to St. Helena’s elementary school and Monsignor Scanlan High School and the pastor there has always been in my life since kindergarten, Father Derivan,” Curiel said. “He was always the guy watching

over me. Anytime I would mess up at school or in basketball he would always tell me, ‘Be yourself. Don’t be a follower. Be who you are, Andrew.’ So he always said “Be You” so I had to make the name catchy so I added in the “Stay True.” The duo put together their first camp last July 18 at Scanlan’s gymnasium, which the school donated at no cost. The water and snacks provided for the campers were donated by parents and even some of Cu-

“We did various drills from dribbling, shooting, passing, free throws and defense and then we had a scrimmage at the end with the different age groups,” Zeno said. “We spoke to them about ourselves and what the program is about and stands for. It was actually a great day.” What the program stands for can be found on the business card the duo had made up, with the mission statement of the program printed on the back. “We’re focused on three areas — self-empowerment in youth, giving back the knowledge of the game and life through basketball and enhancing opportunities for children in the classroom,” Curiel read off the card. “The programs all aim to provide, enhance and motivate the youth in their everyday lives. We believe that these are essential to living a joyful life and building stronger individuals.”

But the program is benefitting both Curiel and Zeno as well, as both have found great satisfaction in this endeavor and would like to continue to work with kids long after their college basketball playing careers are over at The Mount. “I felt it was an opportunity to be a mentor for the children and I know when I was growing up I had a mentor who was my basketball coach who looked at life as bigger than basketball,” Zeno said. “He always put academics first and he always pushed us to be better men instead of better basketball players. So I feel like the “Be You Stay True” program gave me an opportunity to do that with these children and pass on the knowledge I gained from my mentor growing up.” Last week, Curiel and Zeno had some of the campers on hand as guests when Mount St. Vincent was hosting Maritime College. At halftime of the game, while the two teams were in the locker room, the campers were given the opportunity to play a scrimmage on a college court — something none of them had ever had the opportunity to do prior to the “Be You Stay True” program. “We got all our teammates some “Be You Stay True” shirts and we warmed up in the shirts before the game and then at halftime we had some of our campers come play a scrimmage on our court,” Zeno said. “They were a little nervous when we met with them before the game but they were excited and once they got the gist of things they just started having fun. I know it

meant the world to them.” Curiel and Zeno have plans to run another camp this summer, back at Curiel’s old stomping grounds at Scanlan High School, with the hopes of an even bigger roster of campers this time around. There’s also talk of a second camp at Mount St. Vincent at some point over the summer which is in the very early planning stages right now. “We’d like to have some kids from the Riverdale area come,” Zeno said. “We would love to do it here. We’ve gotten a lot of positive responses from the administration and from the athletic department. People actually enjoy what we’re doing. We really haven’t done anything much yet. This is just the beginning.” Just the beginning of what both Curiel and Zeno hope will be long careers as coaches and mentors. “[After graduation] on the side I want to become a basketball coach,” Curiel said. “I want to continue this. I really like working with kids. Zeno had similar plans down the road. “I want to be a basketball coach with maybe young kids starting out and then work my way up,” said Zeno, a 5-foot-10 sophomore guard. “In the summer I’m a camp counselor (at Wagon Road Camp in Chappaqua) with younger kids. I feel like I bond with them and have great relationships with younger kids. It’s what I really like to do.”
