MEMBErS of riverdale Children’s Theatre rehearse ‘Beauty and the Beast, Jr.’ at the Bronx House School for Performing Arts on Feb. 18. The show runs through Sunday, Feb 28. Below, Dylan Mejil as Lumière with older brother Daniel Mejil as Beast.

Children’s Theatre wants you to be their guest By Isabel Angell iangell@riverdalepress.com

T

he Riverdale Children’s Theatre (RCT) is tackling another family-favorite musical. This time, it’s the Disney classic “Beauty and the Beast.” “Tale as old as time, song as old as rhyme, Beauty and the Beast,” the cast sang on Feb. 18, in their last rehearsal before their first weekend of sold-out performances. For this show, RCT is bringing back professional actor Guy Ventoliere to be the production’s teaching artist for a fifth year. As part of the role, Mr. Ventoliere will actually be in the show, playing Belle’s eccentric father Maurice. “They can see how I prepare, they can see how I behave onstage, not only theater etiquette, but also focus and not fooling around, and the energy,” he explained. “Usually it ends up being the energy, like really being in the moment.” “They’re very professional. I’m a professional, and this is professional,” said musical director Linda LoPresti, who is a music professor at Lehman College and directs the music program at P.S. 57 Crescent School in Belmont. “It’s so many pieces. It’s a million piec-

es. I just never realized,” she said of the production. “It’s a lot for us [the adults], so imagine what it’s like for a 14-year-old or an 8-year-old. They learn so much.” When asked to name her favorite musical number from the show, Ms. LoPresti was stumped. “Oh, it’s hard,” she mused. “I think I’d have to say ‘Be Our Guest,’ because everybody’s onstage,” she finally said, referring to the song in which all the inanimate objects in the Beast’s castle come alive. Dylan Mejil, 12, plays one of those crooning accoutrements — Lumière, the debonair candelabra. “My favorite part about it is doing a French accent, because I say something out of the show in a French accent, I’m like, ‘Oh, I play Lumière, it’s a force of habit,’” he said. “During class a lot I’m like, ‘Zee answer eez…’” “It’s one of the best productions so far from Bronx House,” said Dylan. “It’s very extravagant — fantastic costumes, fantastic sets — and it’s a fantastic show overall. It’s something that the whole family would enjoy.” “Beauty and the Beast, Jr.” runs through Sunday, Feb. 28 at Bronx House, located at 990 Pelham Parkway South. THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - B5

Home of the week Vicki Green of Halstead Property

601 Riverdale Ave. is a co-op that puts the emphasis on comfort. Ideal for small families, apartment 6C may be a junior four, but it has been converted into a two-bedroom without skimping on space. Parquet hardwood flooring spans the apartment. An ample living room space is ripe for anyone with a design eye. With room for abundant furniture and guests, it is malleable for a variety of decorative approaches. Granite counters sparkle in the updated eatin kitchen that also gets plenty of sunlight. Also updated is the bathroom, complete with pristine white tiling that just shines. Clockwise from top: The spacious living room fits more than the bare necessities. The newly updated kitchen features plenty of granite counter space. Space is not sacrificed in the converted bedroom. Glowing porcelain in the updated bathroom. Note: Each week’s featured home is chosen at random from among houses and apartments offered by Riverdale Press advertisers. The opinions expressed are those of the advertiser and not The Riverdale Press news department. For further information, write to advertising@ riverdalepress.com.

The spacious main bedroom catches lots of light as well. And although converted, the additional bedroom offers comparable room, windowing and storage. The building is walking distance from The Riverdale Y, the Riverdale Library, Metro-North and several schools. The Riverdale Neighborhood House, shopping and other amenities are a quick trip away. 5601 also includes a doorman, live-in super, a waiting list for parking and the option to bring along pets. According to Vicki Green of Halstead Property, the North Riverdale unit is priced at $194,000 with $937.86 in maintenance.

THE RIVERDALE PRESS - Thursday, February 25, 2016 - B9

Sports Lightning could strike twice at tourney By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com It was near the end of practice late Monday afternoon and most of the Lehman men’s basketball team had just left the court as the women’s team arrived for their own practice. But there was Lightning senior Olusegun Williams, out of DeWitt Clinton High School, lingering on the court and shouting a message to no one in particular. “It’s senior year and I want a ring,” Williams said multiple times. Well, Williams and the men’s team — and the women’s team as well — will get their shot at snagging championship rings this week as both teams go into the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) tournament as the number one seeds. It’s a rare feat but one that both teams are embracing as the chase begins for championship hardware. “It’s the first time it’s happened around here and it’s definitely pretty exciting,” said Lehman women’s head coach Eric Harrison, who guided the Lightning to an 18-7 overall record and a 13-3 CUNYAC mark. “There’s a cool buzz around campus. Everyone is energetic and everyone’s into it.” The women’s team, led by CUNYAC Player of the Year Amely Del Rosario, clinched the CUNYAC regular-season title on Valentine’s Day with a convincing 69-58 victory over CCNY. Ironically, that’s the same team the women will battle in Wednesday night’s semifinal game at CCNY at 6 p.m. as they look for their first CUNYAC championship since 2007. “We beat them twice and they were two very good games,” Harrison said. “It’s a big advantage for them to be playing at home so we know we really have to be on top of our game. We know they’re going to battle us, they played us close both times. We feel we’re the better team, but we know it’s not going to be a cakewalk.”

Scoring machine It helps when you have a player the caliber of Del Rosario on your side. The junior point guard not only led CUNYAC in scoring at 23 points a game, but she finished second in the nation in Division III in scoring while already surpassing the 1,000-point career mark. She also set a school single-game scoring record when she dropped 48 points on Hunter College earlier this season. “She’s the best player in the conference and it helps us out a lot where we know with her in the mix she can give you 30 [points] on any given night,” Harrison said. “She’s also doing all the little things, so that’s also helping.” Del Rosario cautioned that despite sweeping the season series from CCNY, it’s no given that Lehman will roll on into Friday night’s championship game. “Confidence is always with us. It’s all about being mentally prepared for this game,” said Del Rosario, who played her high school ball at the JFK Campus. “You can beat a team 10 times and the 11th time you never know. Even the last time we played them, after the game one of their players said, ‘There third time is the charm.’ So we’ll see.” The Lehman women have key players other then Del Rosario. There is a trio of talented seniors led by four-year

player Jennifer Navarro, who drilled 91 three-pointers this season, along with Karrin Walker and Amani Lightbourne, who averaged 14.1 and 13.2 points, respectively. Navarro was second on the team in scoring at 19 points a game. So the Lightning has its share of offensive weapons. “We got some pretty good pieces here like Jennifer Navarro, the number one three-point shooter in the country,” Harrison said. “If they all click on the same day, we’re in very good shape. We’re excited and we’re looking forward to it.”

Confident crew As is a men’s team which clinched the CUNYAC regular-season title on its final game of the regular season with a victory over the College of Staten Island on Feb. 16. The Lightning finished the regular season 18-7 overall and 12-4 in the CUNYAC under conference Coach of the Year Steve Schulman. “It’s a very confident group of guys,” said Schulman, now in his 18th season at the helm and seeking his first tournament title since 2012. “That’s been our thing. I think we’re a very together crew in terms of the way we play. There’s no big scorer like some other CUNY teams have and we just have a lot of confidence.” The men’s team boasts three players who average in double figures in scoring led by a pair of seniors in Chaun Miller (18.7 points a game) and Orlando Minott (17.4). And it is that pair which will determine if the Lightning will come home with that championship trophy. “Chaun and I speak constantly and we go into every game thinking it’s our last,” Minott said. “We don’t think next game, we think, ‘Let’s get this one behind us.’ Especially for me, this is my last year and I’ve always wanted one thing, and that’s to win it all. So I came into this season thinking I have to do everything in my power to get to where I want to go.” The men’s team will take on fifthseeded Baruch in Wednesday night’s semifinal at CCNY, a team Lehman defeated twice during the regular season. But again, no one is taking anything for granted. “I think it’s going to be a battle. I think it’s going to be a one-possession, last-two-minutes kind of game,” Schulman said. “We beat them twice, but we beat them in two very close games. They won the championship last year and the majority of the guys who are back for them this year played in those games. So we’re not playing against guys who will walk into City College and get all nervous. They’ll be ready to go. It’s two very equal teams. They easily could have beaten us twice and we would be the five seed instead of the one. It’s that close.” Minott agrees that you can throw the regular season results out the window now that the postseason has arrived. “I’m pretty sure they’re fired up,” Minott said. “They’re seeking revenge, basically. We’ve come to grasp the fact that the two wins before don’t mean anything. Now we’re 0-0 and it’s win or go home.” The men’s and women’s teams are a close-knit bunch who have worked out together often throughout the season at the Apex, Lehman’s home gym. They

The Lightning won 99-88. plan to attend each other’s tournament games as a show of support as the two teams try to bring home CUNYAC gold. “It’s really awesome and it’s neat because there is a lot of interaction between the two teams,” Schulman said. “The two teams get along really well. They go to each other’s games. “The thing with the women and the men is we’re always in the gym, we’re both gym rats,” Minott said. “Sometimes Chaun and I walk in and we want to get some shots up and the women will be in here and it turns into a group thing where we’ll do drills together. So it’s a matter of us wanting Lehman basketball to get better, whether it’s women or men. So we’re constantly rooting for them and they’re constantly rooting for us.” Two championships there for the taking for Lehman. A pair of wins on Wednesday could set up a Lehman championship doubleheader Friday night at CCNY. “The conference is in our hands right now,” Del Rosario said. “We’re the number one seed, we have that advantage and we have a great team. I think everyone’s intensity is at 100 (percent) right now.”

St. Margaret’s sports thrive thanks to Woodses By Sean Brennan sports@riverdalepress.com Pat Woods wasn’t even a teenager when his father, Joe, took him to St. John’s University to watch the 1975 Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) city championship basketball game between Tolentine High School in the Fordham section of the Bronx and Power Memorial H.S. of Manhattan, a place Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, then known as Lew Alcindor, once called his high school home. “When my father took me to the Tolentine-Power championship game with [Tolentine’s 7-0 foot center] Charlie Brown, I got hooked,” said Woods. “And I’ve only missed three CHSAA championship games since 1975.” It was that love of grassroots basketball that prompted Woods to follow in his father’s footsteps at St. Margaret’s, first as a player, then as a coach and fundraiser for the St. Margaret’s sports programs that flourish to this day. “Altogether now the two of us have done 40 years of boys’ varsity basketball at St. Margaret’s,” Pat Woods said. Suffice to say that without the Woods’ interest in St. Margaret’s sports, the school’s intramurals and traveling basketball programs may have long

But thanks to father and son — and a little something called “The Beefsteak” — the school and its basketball programs are thriving. “When I was in seventh grade the program kind of nosedived,” Woods said. “The program got shutdown. In seventh grade our coach couldn’t make all the games. Sometimes

we didn’t even practice and I don’t think we even finished the season. So in the winter of 1976, my dad started the intramural program.” It was right around that time that “The Beefsteak” — an event that would become the main fundraiser for the school’s sports program — was born, with Joe Woods as the driving force.

“The school started The Beefsteak fundraiser to raise money for uniforms and league fees and things like that,” Pat Woods said. “The Beefsteak then was a small thing done in the cafeteria. But in 1976, my dad brought it up to the gym and it really took off. It had crowds that could have broken fire department rules.” This year’s Beefsteak, held annually on the first Friday night in February, continued to thrive. While 76-year-old Joe Woods, who was the chairman of the event from 1976 until 1996, now limits himself to selling chances and various other duties, son Pat, who also took over coaching the St. Margaret’s basketball teams in 1984 after Joe stepped down, plays a key role in getting the information out to eager attendees. “My role is to promote the event and I sell a lot of tickets,” Pat Woods said. “I have a list of guys who either played for my dad or played for me and I get in touch with all of them.”

Labor of love The attendance has spiked in recent years, with this year’s crowd estimated at 430. And the event, which boasts such prizes as Nights on the Town, Broadway show tickets, tickets to various sporting events as well

as hefty restaurant gift certificates, raised $30,000 this year. “The Beefsteak is the top fundraiser we do,” Pat Woods said. “We also do the Pat Joyce Memorial Tournament — he’s a Yonkers fireman who died in the line of duty in 2009 and he was a player on my first team. The money from that we donate to the Treehouse, which is a Westchester Bereavement Center. But it’s in the last 10 years it’s just grown with the last five to six years we’ve raised roughly $30,000 a year. “We use the money for uniforms, league fees,” he continued. “There is also a basketball yard outside and we put baskets up there. We’ve renovated the bathrooms and created a locker room. We just give money to different projects. The school was able to overhaul their library, things like that. The floor in the gym needs work all the time. We have six travel teams, so there are tournament costs. The Beefsteak is the main fundraiser for all of that.” And while the funds from this year’s Beefsteak have yet to be designated for one particular project, Woods knows where he’d like it to be allocated. “Clearly the lights they have in the gym are horrific, so maybe we’ll upgrade to LED lights,” Pat Woods said. “That’s been on the board.”

It’s a labor of love for Pat Woods, one started back in the 1970s by his dad and continues to this day. “We charge our kids only $25 to play here but they get a home and away uniform and the uniforms are on par with a nice high school uniform,” Pat Woods said. “My team goes to about four or five tournaments a year, so the fees add up pretty quickly.” As the basketball season at St. Margaret’s winds down, Woods said the plan is to have the annual sports awards night on March 19, when many players out of the program’s past come back to support the league that gave them their start in sports — some as long as 40 years ago. Which is as long as Joe and Pat Woods have been involved in running St. Margaret’s basketball programs. “It’s scary when you say that,” Pat Woods said with a laugh. “This is my 33rd year and my dad did it for seven. He also did 20 seasons of Friday night boy’s intramurals. He always wanted kids to play.” And just as Joe Woods has a banner honoring him in the St. Margaret’s gym, will one for Pat Woods be in the offing? “If I can reach 50 years, we’ll see,” he said. “Maybe one of these days when I finally hang it up.”
