Feast of the Chinese Martyrs

M

onday evening, July 9, the parishioners of the Mary Immaculate Church gathered to celebrate a special occasion, the Feast of the Chinese Martyrs, those whose blood helped sow the seeds of faith for the generations of Chinese in China and around the world. A special English – Mandarin Mass, with the epistle readings in Mandarin and the gospel in English was well attended by the Filipino Chinese community and the faculty and students from Holy Cross High School. The readings were done by Sr. Joan and Sr. Celine of the Sisters of the Congregation of St. Therese of the Child Jesus. The Mary Immaculate Parish Women’s Association (MIPWA) Choir with Mrs. Yanni Dy at the organ, and the students from Holy Cross High School sang Mandarin songs for the Mass. Rev. Fr. Ray Pascual, the Parish priest and main celebrant, with Fr. Michael Quintana who concelebrated the Mass, wore red vestments even as the altar was draped in red, signifying the martyrs’ blood offered on the alter of faith. In line with the Chinese tradition of respect, a simple table clothed in red with a framed picture of the martyrs was placed on the right side of the altar set with Chinese incense

delity to the faith” In our generation we might not be called to martyrdom, as we celebrate the feast and honor the Chinese Martyrs, we remember the sad and long list of those who died for their faith. May we be inspired by their lives and in our little way walk the faith so the world may know the Light that the martyrs have shown.

Sunday Gems: Lord, let me be an inspiration, to the many in Thy precious fold, Let my lamp so shine, that all Thy children could be bold. In the word of my Savior, let us walk and talk with Thee That when we leave this old earth, in Heaven there we’ll be. by Pearlie Duncan Walker

Red, the symbol of martyrdom dominate the altar color as Fr. Rey Pascual, in red vestments celebrate Mass. Fr. Michael Quintana is the co-celebrant with Sr. Joan reading the epistle. At right is the table set with the picture of the Chinese Martyrs sticks and red candles. After the Mass, the parishioners commented that the choir sang beautifully and the gospel message was inspiring for this generation that enjoy religious freedom. It was both a somber and uplifting Mass, celebrating the life and death of those who died for their faith. Memories are still fresh of the Chinese seminarians and priests who fled the persecution of religious in the late 40’s, our very own Fr. Bartholomew Sun and the late Fr. Paul Chi. From the depths of History the Chinese people have suffered persecution and oppression for their faith. The last 100 years have seen violent persecution and half a century of suppression under the communist regime. Since loosening restrictions on religion after the 1970s, Christianity has grown significantly within the People’s Republic of China. It is still tightly controlled by government authorities. The Roman Catholic Church recognized 120 Catholics who died between 1814 and 1930 as its Catholic Martyrs. 88 died during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900. That period

tyrs were canonized by the Late Paul John Paul II On the Feast of St. Therese on October 1, 2000 Many other Chinese martyrs might not be known but

Sunday ... From page 6 all that is needed for human life is to meet the economic needs of the people. This is of decisive importance today in that ideological struggle, people talk glibly about the so-called effectiveness of some non-Christians approach to the problem of poverty which, in view of its bias for the aspired-for economic abundance of the poor, labels the poor as “the good ones” and the rich as “children of the devil.” Christians are therefore warned “not to start with this ideology of oppression and then reinterpret the Scriptures from this ideology.” Third, God being on the side of the poor does not mean that the Church is only for the poor. It has often been pointed out that the Bible says nothing of God being on the side of the rich. While it is not explicit in the New Testament that God favors the rich, it is clear that from the beginning there have been Christian adherents who could be classified as rich or, at least poor. For instance, the communal structure of the early Church implies that some members were more economically able than others – those “who sold possession” (Acts 4:45). It is stated that Barnabas sold a field and brought the money to the apostles (4:3637). From various other New Testament passages there are intimations of the place of the rich in the Kingdom of God. Joseph of Arimathea was rich enough to donate a grave for Jesus entombment (Mt. 27-59); one of the recorded stories of conversion is that of Zaccheus, “a publican and rich” (Lk 19:2ff.); and one of the letters of Paul is written to Philemon, a slave-owner. Moreover, a splendid narrative of a dialogue of Jesus with people is the one with the rich young ruler. It is recorded of Jesus that he “loved him” (Mk. 10:21). (To be continued)
