too risky for COMELEC and the government. But NAMFREL’s insistence on its withdrawal shows there really is something to hide by some people. Why can’t election data by COMELEC be synchronized by NAMFREL if it’ is a clean election? There should be no problem, but why the refusal to have NAMFREL access election data? That is the big suspicious question. The rejection of the NAMFREL proposal for access to election data like electronics copies of the certificates of canvass and the statement of votes means NAMFREL would not be able to independently track down and monitor the authenticity of the election results. If given the data, NAMFREL would be able to track down and observe the general situation and environment of the May 13 elections. But no, NAMFREL, is not authorized to do that by the COMELEC. So with that scenario alone, the credibility of the results of the polls would be number 1 questioned. In many places, NAMFREL is replaced by the PPCRV People’s Council which would merely go through the motions but not really assuring clean electoral process and credibility.

ZD TRIVIA What is at stake In this election?

T

Editorial; What’s new tomorrow?

W

hat is new tomorrow is that the Filipino people will decide who will run the affairs of Congress and the local governments in the next three years. This is called the mid-term elections. While it is true that election is a democratic process, yet, the new forces of modern and cyber technology has again creped and threatened the very freedom that underlays the foundations of our democracy. This is the First major election wherein social media plays a very important and significant role as a game changer. It is now so easy to invent and circulate fake news. Time will come when social media will just be regarded as a big joke. Nobody will believe it anymore. Any tom dick and harry can create a blog and say anything. The time will come when social media will be just like a comic book which are to be taken lightly. Even presidents go on social media as if it is gospel to people. No sir. Social media credibility will soon

end. Time will come when they will regard social media as a venue of big and small jokes. The plots to kill leaders and followers may at first create an impact. But done every day, people will just take social media in a stride like a chis-mis in a social party which is full of gossips. Today, nobody believes in what they hear in the parties anymore. But what is impressively new is the speed news information circulates the globe in seconds, including the reply. Unlike before when long distance calls are expensive and part of the burden. Today, transmission of messages and documents is mostly free. We must use this new technology to man’s advantage, and not destruction. The trouble with humans is when they discover a new toy, man will use it to destroy each other like Cain and Abel in Biblical history. Social media is like a new toy. Soon the big kids will just throw it away and look for something new and less boring. –30—

Bingo We know that even with the citizens’ individual and collective effort together -we cannot make the nation work efficiently the pistons of its machinery- compared to what electing our representatives at large could do- in mustering the sovereign strength of the country and massive resources of government- to govern and rule the nation in an orderly fashion. Elections have their very good uses. Elections do arm people with the power to take back those that they erroneously elected into positions of influence by drubbing them into the quicksand of oblivion in the next elections. No reelection, sir. By making their elected representatives carve out legislation and help identify the areas of public socio-economic intervention, the electoral process ensures that the will of a fickle minority will not supplant the wishes of the majority. Lobbyists can work their butts off, but the vigilant majority can always tell whether the people they elected had sold out their integrity in favor of Vested Interests. They will conscientiously object. What is a constant source of shame for Boholanos is the fact that the province has been listed as among the top 5 most expensive provinces for public officials to get elected into. Why is a predominantly Catholic province like ours tagged with this uncomplimentary billing? Have we not realized that politics is one big business model where money spent must be eventually recouped in ways that are not good for governance and the public budget? And that elected officials will show an even bigger fervor to amass private wealth to finance themselves to be re-elected in the next polls? Many of us have failed to realize that allowing this method of corruption (while they are in office) is really shooting ourselves on the foot, mistaking short term benefits (vote selling) for the long-term good. It never is. In more advanced democracies, research studies had shown that there is a strong direct correlation between what one spends and the success in the polls. The budget can cover expenditures for cam-

paigners, watchers, advertisements, posters, social media trolls and block time money spent. In less advanced democracies like ours, the poll expenditure that matters more- at the end of the day- is money spent to buy votes directly. It includes knowing how much and in what manner the money can be parceled, blocking off the rivals’ vote-buying scheme and understanding that the “second wave” on election day can be more decisive that the “first wave”. Some well-meaning poll activists had cautioned the voting public that since votebuying is inevitable, they should just take the money but vote according to one’s conscience. The partisan campaigners, however, would always counter-warn such voters that there is a way to check how they actually voted by checking the precinct returns. That is why this plea does not always work for democracy. The other truth is- politicians are so scared of their own shadow- I.e that the rival will do as much vote-buying as they do- that they inordinately overpay voters when they could have actually won the election without the purse. That is par for the course. To others, getting the politician’s money is equal to redistributing “ill-gotten wealth” so they suffer no attacks on their conscience when receiving the bribe money. The truth is- in some areas- voters look up to election times- like they are days when their daily budget for sustenance is boosted from extraneous sources. There are some politicians who can already read the handwriting on the wall that of their imminent defeat- and would rather not spend any more on the “second wave” to save money. The wily campaigners, of course, would give their bosses a false reading and insist there is “still a fighting chance to win” in order to keep the vault open for their own personal vested interests. That is par for the course. The “violent” method of campaignTo page 15

EVERYDAY HEROES If only we know...

The dreaded “N”

T

he dreaded “N” word. To my knowledge, no word in the English language triggers such emotional chaos as does this simple six letter word. Even words that sound like the dreaded “N” word are dangerous. The word “niggardly” meaning “stingy” or “economical” and having nothing to do with race / color by definition or origin has cost several people their jobs and reputations. Anthony Williams, an economist for the mayor of Washington DC, was fired for using the term in a financial report. Even members of the academic community are not immune from ignorant over-reaction. Dennis Boaz, a teacher in Mendocino California was fired for using that perfectly good word just because it “sounded” bad. Ten teachers signed the complaint. You would think teachers would know the words origin and proper definition. One teacher was even afraid to use the word “niggeritis”. A perfectly good word dealing with fatigue from over eating. We have become a nation of cowards held hostage by the politically correct. As a white man there

James “ Kojak ” Hughs U.S. Army Cpt (ret)

is no way I can understand the pain and rage that the simple word “nigger” generates in the hearts and minds of people of color. This mystification is compounded by the fact it does not bother me when people try to insult me by calling me names like “Honky”, “White Trash”, “Red Neck” or “Cracker”. I simply attribute it to their ignorance and walk away. I have been denied jobs base on my color, and blatantly discriminated against socially. I do not let it bother me. I , like the late Julian Bond, a man I admire very much, do not believe in using derogatory terms that to page 12

Golden rule for relationships

T

he Golden Rule is to treat other people as you yourself would like to be treated. It seems like that would be a fairly simple rule to follow, don’t you think? We teach the Golden Rule to children who have just started school – it should be easy for an adult to follow it. How many times have you heard of people yelling at retail workers for daring to be out of stock on an item of clothing? How many times have you seen people honking at other cars or motors in an angry way? ( especially in Cebu or Manila!) If you try to use the Golden Rule in your own life, you will most likely see a difference almost instantly. People do respond to kindness and empathy, even if we

see that being mean gets results. 1. Be kind to staff. I know that it can be very frustrating when things are going slowly, and you need to get places. The temptation to take your frustrations out on the people around you can be very strong, but resist! Remember the golden rule, and remember that these people often have to page 12

T

hat is, if we only know what God has given us, for sure we would freeze in astonishment, and once recovered, would spring to action to correspond generously to his great tremendous gift to us! That is, if we only know. The problem is that we hardly know about this gift because we always tend to take things for granted. We only or mainly see the physical things. Anything beyond, anything spiritual and supernatural, is at best given a lick and a promise. We need to make some changes, even some drastic adjustments, in our way of perceiving and discerning things. We just should not stay in the level of the material, the worldly and the temporal. We have to learn to capture the spiritual, the supernatural and the eternal realities in our life. And this means that we have to sharpen our faith, our skill at praying such that we can truly say that we are having a direct encounter with God our Father. We need to convince ourselves that this is possible and doable. Precisely God’s tremendous gift to us is he himself, his giving his own self to us, offering us whatever is good to us all the way to offering us mercy and forgiveness even if we have not yet asked for forgiveness.

Matching jobs with job seekers

T FR. ROY CIMAGALA Email: roycimagala@gmail.com

It is important that we pause from time to time to consider this basic truth about God and us and to let it sink in our consciousness so as to make it the motivating and guiding principle in our life. We may have to do a number of things to achieve this goal or ideal, and they may vary depending on the concrete conditions of each one of us. For some of us, it may be a matter of taking the word of God as found in the gospel, in the catechism, in the prayer books, etc., more seriously. We cannot deny that for many of us, reading the gospel, for example, is just a reading exercise, or at best a purely intellectual afto page 9

here has been much distraction going on lately in the traditional and social media: the continuous crackdown on illegal drugs and the usual mudslinging among candidates for the May 13th elections. But lest we be side-tracked, let us go back to one of the main issues of the country: lack of jobs and opportunities for unemployed Filipinos. As the Philippines celebrated Labor Day last May 1, job fairs were held all over the country through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). According to a banner story published May 5th by The Negros Chronicle entitled “4,262 jobs open; only 10 hired!” drawn from an interview with DOLE Negros Oriental, “out of 200,000 jobs nation-wide, only a few thousands were hired. In Dumaguete City, out of 4,362 job openings, only 1,434 responded and applied. Out of 1,434 respondents, only 798 qualified and of this number, only 10 were hired on the spot.”

Agnes Shari Tan -Aliman

A very sad state of affairs indeed. Are there not enough qualified job seekers in the city? Or is there a mis-match between the jobs available and the qualifications of the job seekers? Advance information on what kind of jobs are available and what kind of job applicants they are looking for must be published or circulated beforehand for the job fair to be successful. After all, employers of these companies would not be happy to hire merely 10 to page 7

BROTHER’S KEEPER The Greatness of Jesus

6 When evening came, they brought to him many possessed with demons. He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick; 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying: “He took our infirmities, and bore our diseases.” Jesus took upon Himself every sickness and every disease that mankind has ever experienced so that we could be healed. I cannot imagine the unfathomable price that Jesus paid for today’s promise to become a reality for us in our generation. In the Garden of Gethsemane as Jesus was sweating great drops of blood, He cried out to His Abba (Father) for the strength to drink from the cup that would pave the way to our redemption. It was at this crucial time in history that Jesus took upon Himself ALL our sin and exchanged ALL our brokeness for ALL of His life. I believe that only the Holy Spirit can bring revelation to us so that we can grasp in part the incredible sacrifice that Jesus paid so that we could become heirs of His glorious inheritance. May God give all of us the grace today to comprehend the fact that Jesus took upon Himself all of our sickness so that we could be healed. May faith rise in our hearts today so that each one of us could appropriate the finished work of the cross in every area of our body and our soul that still needs to be healed. Thank you Jesus for saying ‘yes’ to your Father and drinking the terrible cup of the brokenness of humanity so that we might be made whole...spirit, soul & body. Hallelujah, what a Savior!

P

hilip’s journey is mysterious. God seems to have been awakened and instructed by God and was told to attend to the Ethiopian. This is the way the Holy Spirit can also work in our lives through the ordinary day-to-day events. We should never discount the fact that God might speak to us in an unexpected way. My friend woke up in the middle of the night and was inspired to pray for the success of the building of a shopping center. His obedience eventually led the owner of the shopping center to convert to Christianity. Acts 8:26-40 -O0OThe Gospel of Jesus surpasses all other revelations that have preceded it. We have the definitive self-revelation of God in the person of Jesus, His life and His mission. Jesus clearly tells us that His ministry surpasses that of the Old Testament — your fathers ate manna in the desert and they died. “I am the bread come down from heaven and whoever eats this bread will never die.” These are words that we need to cling to like we have never held on to anything else. Jesus understands the centrality of the Exodus event in the lives of the Jews.

It would be unconstitutional for our Congress to provide, as House Bill 5043 does, “That the full range of family planning methods, both natural and modern shall be promoted,” because among available modern birth control methods some (like the IUD, pills and injectables) prevent the implantation of the fertilized ovum. Should such a provision and others like it also be struck out not only on grounds of constitutionality but also on grounds of morality? Should the prevention of the implantation of the fertilized ovum be considered the termination of a human life and should therefore be called abortion? According to Catholic theology and doctrine, the unborn becomes human when it begins to be animated by a human soul. The infusion of the human soul into the unborn is called

“ensoulment”. Question: When does ensoulment happen? Does it happen at fertilization or later? Catholics may be surprised to know that the great theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas, was of the opinion that ensoulment happened only after the fertilized ovum had attained a certain stage of development. Before that, the fertilized ovum had only a vegetative and later animal life. The time of animation by the spiritual soul was estimated to be at approximately six weeks after conception. This wa The tide of opinion shifted, however, in the 18th century, and in the 19th century, the opinion that ensoulment took place at fertilization became more common. Up to now there is no agreement on the theoretical question of the moment of ensoulment. The Church has not made any authoritative pronouncement on the matter either. A textbook (Christian Ethics, vol. 2 by Fr. Karl H. Peschke, SVD) used in many seminaries for teaching moral theology, while reporting these developments, says this: There is no official pronouncement of the Church which approves or condemns either theory. However since both opinions are probable and since we deal with the great good of human life, theologians commonly hold that in the practical order one must follow the safer course of action and always treat a living fertilized ovum as a human person, whatever its stage of development, with all the rights of a human be-

The Vatican ’s Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, in its “Declaration on Procured Abortion”, stated authoritatively: In reality, respect for human life is called for from the time that the process of generation begins. From the time that the ovum is fertilized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor the mother, it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already. The Congregation later adds, “From a moral point of view this is certain: even if a doubt existed whether the fruit of conception is already a human person, it is objectively a grave sin to dare to risk murder.” The time of ensoulment or beginning of animation of the fertilized ovum by a spiritual soul may be impossible to determine. The factual question may never be answered because we cannot observe the infusion of a spiritual soul into a body by

YOUR WELLNESS Golden rule... By : Calvin Trent

When does... (Tulabing) from page 11 human person. But the practical course of action is clear: no one is allowed to directly kill what may probably be already a human person. To do so would be to risk committing homicide or murder. If you are hunting, for example, and hear a movement in the bushes, you may suspect it is a wild boar. But then you also think it may be a man, maybe a companion of yours, even. You are not morally allowed to shoot at whatever is moving in the bushes until you ascertain that it is not a human being. If you do shoot before you find out for certain that it is not a man, and then find out later that you have wounded or killed a man, it would not do to say that you were not sure it was a man and so you shot it.

Hence, from the moral point of view, Catholics must object against the promotion of drugs and devices that prevent the implantation of the fertilized ovum. Thus, you can understand the militancy of the Catholic bishops and faithful against the pending HB 5043. They are waging a fight in defense of human life.

BROTHER’S KEEPER

The greatness... from page 7 He has been a Jew for 30 years. He knows what it means to them and yet He tells them that it is nothing compared to what He is offering us in the Gospel. We need to situate the message of the Gospel within its Jewish context in order to understand how radical it is. What does this mean for us today? One of the challenges we face is to rediscover the radical nature of the Gospel. If the Old Testament is certain death, then the direction of the secular world in which we live today is ultra-certain death. We live in a time when the comparison is even more stark and confronting, which can be both a help and a hindrance when proclaiming it. However, what is most important is that we retain everything that is essential to the message of the Gospel. Let us never water down the truth of the Gospel proclamation so that its power to save is not compromised. Many will reject it, but that is neither our fault nor our problem. It is the role of the Holy Spirit to bring conversion. It is our role to faithfully live and proclaim the Gospel truths. Fr. Steve Tynan, MGL REFLECTION QUESTION: How well do you understand that the Gospel is a natural progression from the revelation of God that we find in the Old Testament?

no more control over the issue than you. The staff are most likely doing everything they can to ensure that things get back to normal. More than that, they often have little or nothing to do with the delays or problems. Remember the Golden Rule: would you like to be insulted and demeaned due to circumstances beyond your own control? Be nice to them; they are doing their best. 2. Be kind to strangers. Remember this simple fact: travelling isn’t fun for anyone, especially long-term travel. Apply the golden rule to every interaction with the people around you. You would most likely want people to remember that you are likely tired, uncomfortable, cramped, and stressed – extend them the same courtesy. This is particularly important when it comes to adults who are travelling with children. Think how uncomfortable and inconvenient travelling is when you are an adult. How do you think the child feels? 3. Be kind to your family. It can be easy to get frustrated, but remember the Golden Rule! When someone is ill, it can be very hard – that illness can bring financial problems, or that people now have to drive out of their way to visit, or need to make time to clear their house out, or need to make arrangements for in-home care, as well as doing all their normal responsibilities. If it was your family member who needed care and your family member who you wanted to visit, then you would want compassion and understanding from your family. The same is true of other people: they will want understanding and compassion from you in turn. 4. Be kind to yourself. Too often, people don’t treat themselves with the respect they deserve. They think that they haven’t done enough, or aren’t successful enough, or aren’t worthy of love. The truth of the matter is that they are enough by themselves. You are enough by yourself! Be kind to yourself. ( All of our spirits look the same to God, He doesn’t think of us as rich or poor!) Following the Golden Rule should be one of the easiest things in the world. Unfortunately, we tend to be far less forgiving of some people than we do of others. Following the Golden Rule would make the world an easier place to live in for everyone. We would all be much happier if we were treated properly, and also most likely feel better for treating others properly too.

New Testament Bible Baptist Church located in Pulantubig Near Mag Say Say Elementary School in the Captain T. Amores Estate. We would like to Invite you to our Services each Sunday at 9 a.m. and again at 4:30 p.m. Also, we have a Wednesday Night Bible Study at 6:30 p.m. This month May and next month June, we will celebrate 2 important days of the year 12th May Mother’s Day, 16th June Father ’s day. God instituted (Founded or established) the home in the book of Genesis. Even God set up the home before Government or the Church in the Bible. Adam and Eve had a perfect Marriage and home before the fall in the Garden of Eden. When they were ran out of the Garden because of sin and keeping them back from the Tree of Life, then their Cain committed an awful sin of murdering his brother. We see a beautiful home upset by sin. We can turn to the book of Ruth. This is a wonderful story of a lady that turned from idols to serve the one living God. Ruth 1:15 “..Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her People, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law” Vs. 16 “And Ruth said, Intreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: … thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” Ruth was talking to her mother – in – law Naomi. If you read chapter 2-4, you will see Ruth meeting Boaz a Plantation owner. Chapter 4:13 “So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bare a son” Vs. 17 “And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying there is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name OBed: he is the Father of Jesse, the father of David” Read the book and see how God led in this family life. This is a wonderful family and God put it all together. When people are truly Bible believers in the one true God, then God gives His best to them. Are you willing to follow the Bible and the truth about salvation and the way to God? Follow Jesus Christ!

Montalbo; 4. The Registry of Deeds for the Province of Negros Oriental is impleaded as it is the concerned government agency tasked to issue certificate of title to land after ascertaining the sufficiency of documents evidencing ownership. 5. Plaintiff during his marriage with his wife Dulcesima Ramirez acquired and took possession of a parcel of land covered by and an embraced in Transfer Certificate of Title No. FT-5497, containing an area of two hundred ninety four (294) square meters, more or less, situated at Poblacion, Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, copy of certificate of title is hereto marked as Annex “A”; 6. For about 18 years now; plaintiff is separated-in-fact with his wife who has been living in Japan; 7. Plaintiff has been in actual, continuous possession of the said parcel of land; 8. On February 5, 2018, plaintiff filed before this Honorable Court a petition for Judicial Authority to sell one-half portion of the aforesaid property representing his conjugal share, pursuant to Section 239 and applicable provisions of Title XI of the Family Code, docketed as FCSpec. Proc. No. 18-02-G, copy is hereto attached as Annex “B”; 9. Defendants Bernardo R. Martinez, Jr. and Toniko R. Martinez with full knowledge of plaintiff’s action in seeking judicial authority to sell, surreptitiously employed fraud and malicious machinations and obtained a Bogus deed of sale in their favor and within an extraordinary short time they were able to swiftly secure a certificate of title into their name, copy of Bogus deed of sale and allegedly obtained TCT No. 103-2018000525 are hereto marked as Annex C and; 10.Plaintiff noticed that TCT 103-2018000525 is unsigned by the concerned Acting Registry of Deeds for the Province of Negros Oriental; 11.Verification with the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Registry of Deeds for the Province of Negros Oriental showed that there was no copy of the “acknowledgement receipt” for the consideration of the land which is a requirement in obtaining a Certificate Authorizing Registration (CAR) with the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to insure that the consideration of the land is paid and to assess the proper tax; 12.After they illegally obtained Transfer Certificate of Title, they sold the said land to defendant JGM Corporation whose agent has full knowledge that it was plaintiff who has been the actual possessor. MAKING POLLS WORK....

Political Boss. Those who are stubbornly for the other side are merely warned not to leave their homes and not vote on actual election day. Or get something that is awful for their anatomy and well-being, if they insist on doing. These are the sad but factual realities on the ground for Philippine politics. This is where we thought the powerful Catholic Church can make Her presence felt and perform Her prophetic role as the Shepherd of the Flock on earth. The Bible is replete with stories about how Peter and the disciples -right after Jesus’ ascension to Heaven- were warned by the authorities not to speak up and be missionaries of the faith. By carrying out their mandated crusade-many of them suffered persecution and some were even killed tied on a wooden cross hanged upside down as Peter is known to have suffered. To speak for Truth and thumbs down evil in society especially in crucial exercises like elections is one role the Church must play -

people walked on sandals along the dirty streets and often comes home with dirty feet. Since the table for meals was low, participants in a meal can see the feet of the others on the table. Normally, therefore, a servant would cleanse with water and wipe the dirty feet of the meal partakers. Since they were operating low-key, during the Last Supper, there were no servants to cleanse their feet and the Apostles- full of themselves- were still probably debating as to who was the greatest. Thus no one wanted to cleanse the feet of the other. To their massive objections, the Master Jesus knelt down before the apostles and washed and wiped all the feet of the disciples, to express his own humility and servanthood. It is clear in John 13:15 that the Lord told the disciples “ I want to give an example that as I have done to you, so should you do (to others)”. It is all the same. To be elected to positions of power, public officials are also expected to behave like public servants and not like warlords to be served by the

people. They are expected to convert their offices as places of service for public welfare and not a commercial market place and a den of thieves. May that glorious thought not be lost on those who will be elected into office on Monday. To whom

much has been given, much will be asked, they must remember that. May Monday’s elections, therefore, be a showcase of democracy - rather than herald its debasement or demise. Shalom! For comments: email to

Who’s your City Mayor? Re-electionist Felipe Remollo From page 2 things. For the last three (3) years, I have had the honor and privilege of serving the people of Dumaguete as its Mayor. With this responsibility comes the trust of its citizens which I hold in the highest esteem. And I have devoted my time, personal resources, and professional skills as a lawyer and as an administrator to do what I know and believe to be what is best for Dumaguete and its citizens in a sustainable manner. Those who have worked with me, those who have debated and argued with me, are people I respect because they passionately want what is best for Dumaguete, as do I. There are those who want power for power’s sake, have tried to manipulate and even break the law to get what they want. And at every turn, your City Council and I, as your Mayor, have always

upheld the rule of all, complied with rules and regulations, and conducted ourselves ethically as civil servants. As I prepare legal action against libelous and slanderous accusations, we must not be distracted from our goal - to make Dumaguete City the most loveable and sustainable community in the Philippines. With a new mandate, we will continue with the development plans of the City which I have painstakingly explained in our daily pulong pulongs. I offered my services to the citizens of Dumaguete City 3 years ago to serve my community. If I wanted to enrich myself, I could have continued to practice my lucrative profession as a lawyer. Public service is not a profession but a vocation. And my family and I will continue to make this vocation our advocacy for the love of Dumaguete City, our home town. I humbly submit to the Will of an enlightened electorate as I continue to pray
