• A ledge or seating area on the edge of the bath tub is great for bathing young children who need to be supervised while in the tub or for an adult who needs easy access to the tub.

The terms “universal design” and “aging-in-place” are often used interchangeably in the building and remodeling industry. While related, however, they are not the same thing. Agingin-place generally refers to design accommodations that will support the changing needs of homeowners as they advance in age. Universal design, on the other hand, involves the use of products and spaces to their full potential regardless of the occupant’s age or life status. According to its advocates at the Center for Universal Design at NC State University (see its seven principles of Universal Design on page 12), “Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” Simply put, it involves designing for the lifespan of the home and its occupants. So your home will accommodate you even as your needs change. A family with small children might include multi-level countertops in their kitchen and bathroom designs. Active families might include a playroom that can later be converted into a gym or exercise room. A couple in their 40s or 50s might want their new or remodeled floor plan to keep all the living space on the main level. Or, they might want to add a mother-in-law suite for the future. And, finally, “aging-inplace” features like curb-less showers and grab bars in the bathroom might be included if they see themselves living in the home during their retirement years.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE KITCHEN

• Refrigerators, cooling drawers and dishwashers can be built into drawers and cabinets for easier access and enhanced design. • An induction cooktop offers energy efficiency and improved safety compared to conventional models. Induction stoves do not feature open flames and the surface remains relatively neutral in temperature during cooking. • Leaving empty space under countertops around the sink or cooking area is valuable for seated access and flexibility. • A lower or adjustable height countertop and sink can make it easier to use by young children or someone who uses a wheelchair. • Roll-out shelves and pull-out cabinets make it easier to see and access dishes, pans and other kitchen tools. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE REST OF THE HOME

• No step entry into the home and its main rooms (no stairs).

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE BATHROOM

• One-story living where the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are all located on the main level.

• Zero-threshold showers offer homeowners both easy access and attractive design. Flush with the bathroom floor, they often feature a trench drain to contain water in the shower area.

• Wider doorways and hallways that make it easier for everyone and everything to pass from one space to the other.

• A slip-resistant, textured floor can help protect both children and adults against accidents in the shower.

• Better lighting helps everyone, not just those with poor vision.

• Grab bars in the tub or shower area or next to the toilet provide safety and support for any user. www.remodelinform.com

UNIVERSAL DESIGN PRINCIPLE FIVE: Tolerance for Error

The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.

The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Guidelines: 5a. Arrange elements to minimize hazards and errors: most used elements, most accessible; hazardous elements eliminated, isolated, or shielded. 5b. Provide warnings of hazards and errors. 5c. Provide fail safe features. 5d. Discourage unconscious action in tasks that require vigilance.

The authors, a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers, collaborated to establish the following Principles of Universal Design to guide a wide range of design disciplines including environments, products, and communications. These seven principles may be applied to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments.

PRINCIPLE SIX: Low Physical Effort

The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. Guidelines: 6a. Allow user to maintain a neutral body position. 6b. Use reasonable operating forces. 6c. Minimize repetitive actions. 6d. Minimize sustained physical effort.

PRINCIPLE ONE: Equitable Use

The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. Guidelines: 1a. Provide the same means of use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not. 1b. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing any users. 1c. Provisions for privacy, security, and safety should be equally available to all users. 1d. Make the design appealing to all users.

PRINCIPLE SEVEN: Size and Space for Approach and Use

Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility. Guidelines: 7a. Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any seated or standing user. 7b. Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user. 7c. Accommodate variations in hand and grip size. 7d. Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance.

PRINCIPLE TWO: Flexibility in Use

The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Guidelines: 2a. Provide choice in methods of use. 2b. Accommodate right- or left-handed access and use. 2c. Facilitate the user’s accuracy and precision. 2d. Provide adaptability to the user’s pace. PRINCIPLE THREE: Simple and Intuitive Use

Note: The Principles of Universal Design address only universally usable design, while the practice of design involves more than consideration for usability. Designers must also incorporate other considerations such as economic, engineering, cultural, gender, and environmental concerns in their design processes. These Principles offer designers guidance to better integrate features that meet the needs of as many users as possible.

Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level. Guidelines: 3a. Eliminate unnecessary complexity. 3b. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition. 3c. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and language skills. 3d. Arrange information consistent with its importance. 3e. Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after task completion.

PRINCIPLE FOUR: Perceptible Information

The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities. Guidelines: 4a. Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile) for redundant presentation of essential information. 4b. Provide adequate contrast between essential information and its surroundings. 4c. Maximize “legibility” of essential information. 4d. Differentiate elements in ways that can be described (i.e., make it easy to give instructions or directions). 4e. Provide compatibility with a variety of techniques or devices used by people with sensory limitations. PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF: LANDIS CONSTRUCTION

With many options and products to choose from, here are some top decking trends and popular products in the decking world.

ADDING VALUE TO YOUR HOME

As far as the decking business is concerned, all options are great and adding a deck to your home tends to add to the value of your house. According to TimberTech, adding a deck to your home not only adds value to your lifestyle, but it adds value to your home. When you add a deck to your home, you’ll recoup much of your investment when you sell your home. In some areas, the return is more than 100 percent. But when it comes time to decide what type of deck is best for your home, it is ultimately the homeowner’s decision.

Many homeowners consider their backyards and outdoor living areas on their property to be critical parts of their home. As such, they often spend as much time and money on outdoor living areas as they do on indoor rooms and additions. Large three-season porches, decks and covered patios are turning up on more new homes and remodeling projects. Depending on where you live, you probably like to spend time outdoors and enjoy the natural atmosphere, fresh air and nice weather. Specifically in the Washington, D.C., area people tend to make the most out of enjoyable weather. Not new to snowstorms and colder temperatures in the winter months, most natives really take advantage of the nice weather that comes in the summer, spring and fall seasons. With winter currently in full force at the moment, now may be the time to start thinking about adding a new deck to enjoy the springtime weather coming before we know it. Extending living space to the outdoors, integrating home and landscape, making use of damp or uneven terrain, and giving a contemporary look to a traditionally styled home are just a few of the ways that decks make life a little better. Now that the housing market is picking up over the past two years, deck manufacturers and suppliers are expanding the options that they are giving to their customers and consumers are taking advantage of their options. 14

SO MANY OPTIONS

When deciding what type of deck is best for you and your home, there are many things to consider. For example, if a homeowner decides to build a wood deck, they must keep in mind that all of the wood that is used in the outdoors must be protected against decay and insect attack. On the other hand, a homeowner might choose a composite deck. When considering what materials to use, TimberTech suggests that you consider your answers to following questions: • What will the traffic be like? • How much sun exposure will it get? • Will your deck be near water or surrounded by water? • What is your style – traditional, contemporary or country? • Are you building a new deck or replacing an existing one? • Will you primarily use it during the day or night or both? • Is it on a first floor or second floor, or both? • Is it important to you that the fasteners are hidden?

www.remodelinform.com

Keep in mind that not all composites are created equal. For example, whether you envision a communal outdoor kitchen or a private haven off the master suite, options such as their Fiberon® composite decking offer a wide range of smart, sustainable outdoor solutions. “You’ll love it because it’s easy to work with and simple to install. You will love it for its lasting, natural beauty,” says representatives of Fiberon. The options are unlimited. “Available in a wide array of decking profiles, colors, surface textures and finishes, Fiberon composite decking offers you the freedom and flexibility to create and customize virtually any outdoor living space.” It’s also easy to be green. “Fiberon sustainable decking products count towards LEED points for recycled content. Earthfriendly and sustainable, our products are made from locally sourced, discarded wood flour generated from other wood processes and recycled plastic that would normally go to waste. Quality decks can last a lifetime while living up to your high standards.” No matter what brand or kind of deck you choose, Greg at TW Perry says that he can’t stress enough to be sure that you like the color that you choose. “Take some samples home with you and take them outside in the morning and in the evening. You will have the deck that you build for a very long time, so you want to make sure that you are happy with the way that it looks.”

By answering these basic questions, any good manufacturer can lead you in the right direction. Also, they can give you some suggestions of what materials you should use. Here are the three most current common types of decks: Wood-Plastic Composite

These practical decking options are designed for the valueconscious customer looking for a lifetime of low maintenance. • Value-priced • Traditional wood-like look • Low Maintenance Capped Composite

Capped with a protective polymer shell with HydroLock™ technology, this plank is resistant to the elements that every deck endures. • VertiGrain™ surface won’t trap dirt or dust • 25-Year Fade and Stain Warranty • VertiGrain™ pattern mimics real wood look PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

PVC engineering guarantees the ultimate in scratch, mildew and stain resistance. • Flat grain surface texture • Does not require pre-drilling • Scratch Resistant

CHECK THE WARRANTIES

Smoot Lumber Co., in Alexandria, VA, is happy to sit down with customers and discuss any questions that they may have. “Typically, we like to discuss what their goals are and what their budget is,” says Chris Toth, with Smoot Lumber. “The composite, Ipe, and PVC deck materials are far superior to the traditional pressure treated material but they are considerably more expensive.”

TimberTech boards are covered by a 25-year limited warranty stating that its products will be free from material defects in workmanship and materials, and will not split, splinter, rot or suffer structural damage from termites or fungal decay. Warranties are provided on all TimberTech products, which include decking, railing, DrySpace drainage system and various accessories. According to Toth at Smoot Lumber, “The products we offer come from quality manufacturers who stand behind their products. We offer products that have a great value and that will look beautiful for many years.” TW Perry has warranties on all of their products. “You will find that all of the warranties are all very similar,” Shutty says. It is important to note that most manufacturers have a limited lifetime warranty against the common problems of composites and wood. Extending living space to the outdoors is just one of many ways that decks make life a little better. Do your homework and find out what type of deck is best for you and your home.

DECKING TODAY

According to suppliers, the decking business has gone through an interesting evolution over the years. In the past, what most people wanted was wood decks, with cedar being the most popular. The next trend was composite, which proved to be even more efficient with less maintenance. You don’t have to stain it, it won’t warp like wood, and in general it’s less maintenance. Now the industry wants even more less maintenance options. “Obviously, the biggest trend has been the move to the composite products,” says Toth at Smoot Lumber Co. “When these products were first introduced, people bought them because they would last—not necessarily because they looked great. Now, they last, there is a great deal of variety available and they are great looking.” Most major decking suppliers have come out with their own brands of PVC decking and consumers are trying to decide which route to go. Smoot Lumber Co. offers a variety of products including Trex, Evolve, Wolf Deck products, Evergrain, TimberTech, Ipe and Pressure Treated. “Trex is a popular material, which most people are familiar with and Evolve is a decking [product] that is made of recycled milk jugs,” said Toth. TW Perry, which has multiple locations throughout the Maryland and Virginia area, offers a variety of brands and carries all of the major suppliers and can special order materials for their customers. “We are seeing our customers using ‘greener’ products in composite decking. They can be recycled and are very low maintenance,” says Greg Shutty, a sales representative with TW Perry. www.remodelinform.com

They have managed our project with great care. Their team has been courteous and helpful, and has shown great skill. The project is on deadline and on budget. They have been flexible in dealing with mid-stream changes. Charlie has consistently pointed out ways where money can sensibly be saved. Overall, the experience has been terrific. I recommend Charlie and Diane and their whole team very, very highly.” “Charlie brings high quality and professionalism to each and every job. No detail is overlooked or shortcuts taken. A Home Transformed BY TROY BLEWETT

upstairs, why not redo the guest bathroom downstairs that everyone sees,” David says. “And if we were going to do those two, why not the guest bath upstairs.” Ultimately, the project would include a fourth bathroom downstairs (as part of remodeling the basement living space), a kitchen renovation, and an upstairs bedroom turned into an amazing closet.

In remodeling, the domino effect refers to how a project to renovate one room or area tends to spread to another and then another, like falling dominos. For example, a master bath leads to the master suite which leads to the guest bedrooms, and so on. Typically, the domino effect is something homeowners and remodelers want to guard against to prevent a renovation from becoming overwhelming. For Nancy and David Mulligan, however, what started as a master bathroom repair became a whole house remodel that transformed their 1989 Colonial into a home they love. “It all started with a leak in the shower in our master bathroom,” chuckles David Mulligan. “We called a plumber in to repair it and he mentioned that since the room was a bit dated and, since we were going to have to tear out the entire shower anyway, perhaps we wanted to consider remodeling. So, we called in Sun Design [Remodeling Specialists], who had worked on my brother’s house, and the project took off from there,” he says. “After talking with them and hearing their great ideas for that room, we thought if we were going to do one bathroom 28

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS—MASTER BATH

The new master bath design provides separate his and her marble vanities which are separated by a large glass shower stall. Framing the dual entrance shower with the custom, furniture-quality vanities created symmetry and balance and created a new focal point for the room. A separate make-up vanity space was also created specifically for Nancy’s needs. Beautiful marble flooring and baseboards compliment the details of a traditional claw foot soaking tub. The tub sits in a nook with windows facing a line of trees. The windows and a skylight bring plenty of natural light into the space. “The master bathroom, along with my new closet, are my favorite places in our home,” Nancy comments. “We even installed a chandelier in the closet.” •

DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS—KITCHEN

“We have wanted to redo the kitchen since we moved in,” David comments, “so we had ideas about what we wanted to change. Sun Design took those ideas and came back with three great designs, two that kept our appliances where they were already located and one that moved everything around,” he says. “We saw the more aggressive redesign and knew that was where we wanted to go.” The first step was to improve both the work and the traffic flow in the space. To create a more open floor plan, an existing peninsula/island combination was replaced with a triangular-shaped center island. Combined with its various counter heights, the new island is perfect for food preparation, clean-up and mingling with guests. Importantly, the open island allows the chef to interact with guests in a comfortable environment. The wave accent tile with both Carrera mosaic tiling and China black marble borders over the range adds both texture and emphasis. Combined with the coffered ceiling with both “up” and “down” lighting, the new kitchen has a modern, yet sophisticated vibe. Unique features include two full-size refrigerators installed next to each other, one with cherry wood facing to match the kitchen cabinetry, and two microwave ovens. Finally, doors leading from the foyer to the kitchen and the kitchen to the dining were replaced with arches. This design idea makes the area look much larger even though the footprint is the same. DESIGN HIGHLIGHTS—FINISHED BASEMENT

“Once we decided to add a fourth bathroom in the basement, we decided we might as well finish off the entire space,” David says. “Because the Sun Design team knew Nancy and I love boating, they came up with a great nautical theme.” The bathroom is designed to look like the bathroom in a ship’s stateroom. The mirror is basically a porthole and the faucets and fixtures are brass. Red, green and white ship lights adorn the billiard room.

SUN DESIGN SHINES

“We originally turned to Sun Design because they had done a complete renovation of my brother’s home,” David comments, “and their attention to detail on his home was amazing. They certainly did not disappoint us. The quality of their ideas and their execution was phenomenal.“ “Having seen the quality of their work took a lot of the anxiety out of the hiring process,” Nancy adds. “We didn’t even interview anyone else. We are very happy with the results.” “The project far exceeded our expectations,” David adds. “I can honestly say that we would not change a thing.” www.remodelinform.com

A Phased Approach to

BY TROY BLEWETT

The owners of this 1950’s vintage ranch love their McLean location. Situated on a beautiful lot that is nestled in a cul-de- sac and backed up to a park, it is close to their work yet maintains its suburban feel. So when the home no longer met their needs, they decided to remodel rather than move. The couple wanted to renovate the main floor living space and add a second level. Additionally, rather than tearing down the whole house and starting over, and being displaced for a significant amount of time, they wanted to live in the home throughout the renovation. To achieve these goals, they turned to Foster Remodeling Solutions in Lorton. 30

REMODELING “After our first few meetings, we realized that for them to be able to stay in the home during the project, and always have a functional kitchen and bedroom, that we would have to divide the project into phases,” says Sarah Wolf, senior design consultant, CID, Leed AP for Foster Remodeling Solutions. The first phase, which was just completed, includes a new first floor garage and a main level family room and kitchen. The second phase will eventually include a second level master suite. Importantly, both phases were planned for at the beginning of the project. Renderings and floor plans were completed for the entire job. “The benefit of this process is that all of the structural considerations necessary for the homeowners to add a second floor are already in place,” stresses Wolf. “Whenever the homeowners decide to add their second level, they can proceed without needing to modify anything done during the first phase of the project.”

A large window in the back of the house above the sink overlooks the park and additional windows over the range allow extra light into the room. Careful attention was given to locating the appliances so the kitchen has an efficient work triangle including a large refrigerator and dual fuel range. Ample storage space was also a homeowner requirement. Furniture-quality custom cabinets were installed for storage and ease of use. Cherry with a fawn stain finish, they have a shaker door style. The countertops are “IceStone,” a product made from recycled concrete and glass with added pigments. Similar in performance to quartz, with no sealing necessary, it is durable and non-porous. The backsplash tile is a mosaic mix of glass, chrome, marble and shell. “When it came to finishes, the clients wanted the space to feel modern but welcoming and warm at the same time,” Sarah comments. “We achieved this feel with clean lines, lots of daylight and natural finishes,” she says.

PHASE ONE

PHASE TWO

“The goals for phase one were fairly straight forward,” Wolf says. “The homeowners wanted a larger garage, more usable living space and to update their outdated kitchen. Being a multi-generational home with grandmother, parents and college-aged kids, the space needed to be large enough to accommodate everyone’s needs.” The first step was to address the façade of the house by relocating the front door entry from around the corner of the house. By relocating it, the Foster team was able to remove the old wood deck and then tear down the entire garage/ kitchen portion of the house, building it back larger and updating the exterior finishes which will be used during future phases. It also allowed for the creation of a 1-1/2 car garage with additional parking on the ground level. “With parking at a premium in a cul-de-sac, the additional garage space and new driveway were especially appreciated by the homeowners,” Sarah comments. In the family room, the design called for cathedral ceilings highlighted by large architectural windows in the front which bring lots of natural light into the space. Open to the family room, the large island in the kitchen can seat six comfortably and is perfect as a buffet for the adjacent dining room space.

“While it may be a few years before the homeowner begins the second phase of the remodel,” Sarah says, “the plan is already in place. Nothing from phase one will need to be torn out and the structure is ready for the addition.” Phase two of the remodel will result in a second floor master suite and reorganize the rest of the main floor bedrooms and bathrooms. Importantly, the homeowners can stay in the house during all phase two construction, saving long term costs and enjoying all of the phase one renovations. “The key to the project was the great relationship we developed with the client,” Wolf comments. “They knew we understood what they wanted from the project and that our plan would put them on the right path to achieving their goals. We are all excited for phase two.”

A VISIONARY REMODEL BY TROY BLEWETT

PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF: MICHAEL NASH DESIGN BUILD & HOMES

Having owned their Victorian-style home in Old Town Alexandria for 23 years, Joan and Michael Baxter decided it was time to give the kitchen a facelift. Essentially unchanged since the home was built, the couple had not been happy with it for some time. “Our kitchen is really our central living space and we just weren’t happy with it anymore,” says Michael. “We really wanted to update the design and the room just didn’t flow very well. The original design included a peninsula that cut the kitchen into two spaces and that was always a cause of concern,” he says. The couple wanted a design that included new counters, cabinets and appliances; an island instead of a peninsula; and better flow from the dining room on one side of the kitchen through to the family room on the other. The home’s original design had them separated by walls. “We knew the renovation was going to be a major project,” Michael says. “We just felt the time was right.” So the couple set out to find the right remodeling contractor for their project.

Homes] came in, listened to our ideas and immediately started talking about how he would develop them.” “I remember him saying he’d do a drawing for us and I asked him how long that would take,” Michael says. “He said, ‘not long at all, I know exactly what should be done here.’ Sonny really created the vision for us.”

HIRING SOMEONE WITH VISION

Joan and Michael interviewed five remodeling contractors for their project. Each came over to see the existing kitchen and met with the couple regarding their needs. According to Michael, the first four firms did not impress them. “They were capable of executing our ideas,” Michael comments, “but we were looking for guidance from someone who had a vision of what the kitchen could be based on what we wanted” “The fifth contractor came over and, within five minutes, I knew he was the right guy,” Michael exclaims. “Sonny [Nazemian, president of Michael Nash Design Build &

THE NEW DESIGN

Nazemian realized immediately that the original peninsula was a major obstacle, the appliances were scattered around the room, there was no traffic flow and the room’s focal point was, oddly enough, the couple’s refrigerator. The new design eliminated a closet on the north wall, moved a soil stack to create space for the new cabinet-paneled built-in refrigerator, microwave/oven cabinet, panty and angular end cabinets. This act allowed more room on the walls of the kitchen for added cabinetry and countertop space. The cook top was moved to the west wall with a custom wood hood over it to give more work space to the middle island. Along with a ceramic tile mosaic, it is now the focal point of the room. Bulkheads filled with plumbing and wiring were removed, creating room for both taller cabinets and some glass front cabinetry (with inside lights) to display Joan’s prized china. A large crown molding along with big arches, valances, legs and corbels made this brushed stroke custom cabinetry stand out. The east wall originally included a big knee wall and a middle post that made the breakfast room feel too closed in and separated it from the adjacent family room. By installing structural beams, the Michael Nash team opened up the space and dressed it up with big custom panel arch openings to replicate the front hall columns. Similarly the front door separating the front hall from the kitchen was taken off, widened and then had the same panel arch treatment done to it. A wasted corner area is now home to hutch-looking cabinetry with mullion doors and added storage space. The middle island not only improved the traffic flow but also •

dressed up this kitchen with its furniture look. To capture the extra space necessary for the new layout, the washer and dryer were relocated to another area of the house. The expansion of hardwood flooring from the front hall into the kitchen and beyond created a seamless transition to the entire first floor. Use of a highly custom brushed stroke glazed cabinetry in a soft vanilla tone complemented the uniqueness of the granite slab counters. The light color tumbled marble backsplash made the glazing of this cabinetry stand out. EXCEEDING EXPECTATIONS

Michael stresses that Sonny’s vision and experience far exceeded their expectations. “I was really concerned that we wouldn’t have enough room for the island,” he says, “but Sonny left just enough room between it and the sides of the room so two people can walk by each other and it fits perfectly. What’s amazing is that the kitchen feels substantially bigger and it’s nearly the exact same size.” The couple is particularly happy with the appliances, particularly the cabinet doors placed on the refrigerator and the dishwasher so they blend in with the rest of the space. “We’ve always spent most of our time in the kitchen, but now it is so much more enjoyable,” Michael says. “And we’ve entertained more in the last 12 months than we have in the last six years.” LIVING THROUGH A MAJOR PROJECT

When you demolish a space down to the studs and plywood floors, and then rebuild everything, a project can affect the homeowner’s routine. The Baxter’s kitchen was no exception, but the team at Michael Nash made the process tolerable. By using in-house employees who make sure the jobsite is cleaned up at the end of each day, the remodeling site is kept as orderly as possible and disruptions to the homeowner are minimal. “We lived downstairs and ate out a lot,” Michael chuckles, “but our new kitchen is so amazing, the inconvenience is just a faint memory.”

NKBA Baltimore/Washington Membership Directory CERTIFICATION DESIGNATIONS The hallmark for kitchen and bath professionals, NKBA certification is based on in-depth testing and extensive industry experience. NKBA-certified members must also meet annual continuing education requirements. The NKBA certifies kitchen and bath professionals in various levels of expertise, and provides two distinct paths; one for the kitchen & bath designers and one for non-design professionals. According to a 2010 survey conducted by FleishmanHillard, 80% of consumers prefer to work with certified kitchen designers over uncertified designers. Members can earn the following certifications and have been identified throughout the directory. NKBA Certified Kitchen & Bath Designers NKBA-certified designers demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in kitchen and bath design, as well as construction, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. They are widely recognized as experts in the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards, which recognize the importance of consumer health, safety and welfare in kitchen and bath design. Our certified designers are also well respected for their skill in assessing consumers’ individual needs and creating designs that meet and exceed their expectations. AKBD - Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years experience: one year with kitchen/bath industry; one year in a related industry. They must also earn a minimum of 30 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. CKD/CBD – Certified Kitchen Designer/Certified Bath Designer CKDs and CBDs specialize in the design, planning, and execution of residential kitchens and bathrooms, and prove advanced knowledge of technical and personal communication skills. Applicants must document a minimum of seven years experience: three years full-time residential kitchen/bath design experience, including design execution or project management; plus four years of full-time related industry experience. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam.

CKE/CBE - Certified Kitchen Educators and Certified Bathroom Educators CKE/CBEs are college instructors who specialize in teaching residential kitchen and/ or bathroom design. They understand the unique qualifications required for kitchen and bathroom design specialization, and they transfer their knowledge to interior design students. A college instructor achieves the CKE or CBE designation by proving experience as an interior design college educator and passing the CKD exam for CKE certification, or the CBD exam for CBE certification. CKEs and CBEs must demonstrate a minimum of seven (7) years of full-time teaching experience in interior design or a minimum of three (3) years teaching experience combined with formal education for a total of seven (7) years. No formal design experience is required. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam. CMKBD - Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer CMKBD recognizes extraordinary experience and achievements in the kitchen and bath industry. The CMKBD must possess not only their CKD and CBD certification, but must have an additional ten years of experience in the industry beyond the date of their first certification. This means that CMKBDs must have a minimum of 17 years of industry experience. In addition, a CMKBD has been nationally recognized through design competitions, industry awards, printed publications, or television spots. A CMKBD must also meet specific educational requirements. Candidates applying for the CMKBD certification are required to have both their CKD and CBD certifications prior to applying. They must also have an additional ten (10) years of industry experience in addition to the knowledge that they have already demonstrated to earn their CKD and/or CBD designation. Five (5) years of this additional experience must be from full-time kitchen/bath design. They must have a minimum of 100 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved.

CMKBE - Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Educator CMKBE recognizes extraordinary experience and achievements of educators teaching residential kitchen and/or bathroom design at the college level. The CMKBE must have their CKE and CBE certifications, and must have an additional ten (10) years of experience in the industry beyond the date of their first certification for a minimum of 17 years of teaching and design experience. Candidates must have both their CKE and CBE certifications prior to applying. Candidates must also have an additional ten (10) years of teaching experience in addition to the knowledge that they have already demonstrated to earn their CKE and/or CBE designation. Five (5) years of this additional experience can be from full-time kitchen/ bath design or teaching. They must have a minimum of 100 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. NKBA Certified Non-Design Professionals Certified Kitchen & Bath Professional is a path for the dealer, distributor, fabricator, installer, remodeler, manufacturer, sales representative, or any other segment of the industry to validate their knowledge, experience, dedication and professionalism in the kitchen and bath industry. This individual is qualified to work with our certified designers to meet the needs of the consumer. The candidate for this certification must meet specific educational requirements and pass a comprehensive academic exam. CKBP - Certified Kitchen and Bath Professional CKBP is our only non-design-oriented certification; one that benefits all industry segments. In order to possess this universal certification, the holder must prove a high level of proficiency in professional knowledge, industry experience, and education in the kitchen and bath industry. The focus of curriculum and critical areas of knowledge is not centered on design, but in the areas of residential construction, general business knowledge, materials and product knowledge, and project management. Applicants must document a minimum of five (5) years of kitchen and bath industry experience. They must have 40 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved.
