Here’s a riddle: what has the beauty of nature, the comforts of the indoors and utilizes previously unused square footage? Outdoor living spaces, of course. Homeowners are discovering the full functionality of their yards and making them as much of an asset to the home as the living room itself. Following are some popular ideas to bring the luxury of the indoors outside. FIRE ELEMENTS
Fireplaces and fire pits remain some of the most popular outdoor additions for their dynamic attractiveness and ability to regulate the temperature of an outdoor room, increasing the length of usability for the space. Ken O’Neill, senior vice president of marketing with Belgard® Hardscapes said, “Both fire pits and fireplaces are top choices, with fire tables on the rise. Fire pits are perfect for homeowners who like to entertain since their design is perfect for a large crowd to gather around. A fireplace creates a focal point in a backyard’s design and is ideal for more intimate settings. Fire tables are on the rise because they provide warmth, while acting like a sculpture or piece of art.”

The mainstay for any outdoor entertaining area, grills are a reoccurring top priority for homeowners, according to an outdoor living trends survey conducted by the American Society of Landscape Architects. “Grilling is the main event,” said Adele Ross in design and sales with Swamp Rose Outdoor Living Spaces in Washington, DC. “That said, homeowners are investing in higher quality outdoor grill products that operate efficiently and will withstand the changing seasons.” Popular grill manufactures include AOG, Delta Heat, Twin Eagles USA, Fire Magic, UniFlame and Napoleon Gourmet Grills. There are many versatile outdoor cooking options available today. Larry Smith, marketing manager with Danver, Inc. said, “Homeowners are also investing in a variety of specialty cooking appliances that include power burners, pizza ovens and ceramic smoker/grills. Many homeowners are moving beyond burgers and hot dogs and are interested in expanding their menus for outdoor cooking.” www.remodelinform.com
OUTDOOR ROOMS
Many homeowners are now ditching the vague patio space in favor of specifically defined “rooms” outdoors, according to a representative from Archadeck. Specially separated areas may designate a living room for sitting and enjoying drinks with friends. Other areas may be for cooking, and still other areas may be nice dining rooms that just so happen to be outside. These areas might be separated by strategically placed decks versus patio spaces, decorative privacy fences or the addition of pergolas over certain areas. Ross mentioned that she is seeing a lot of outdoor dining areas boasting more comfortable seating to “completely bring the comfort of the indoors to the outside.” She also mentioned specific seating areas around fire pits to create a social area that is separated from the patio or deck. Menn said in relation to outdoor rooms, “The most predominant trend is roofed but open areas, such as freestanding areas with a pergola. We’re also seeing a lot of curtained walls that can be closed off or opened up.” Outdoor kitchens are also getting more and more intricate to serve the homeowner who wants all the conveniences of the indoors outside. O’Neill said, “The interest in cooking outdoors is heating up with homeowners upgrading their basic grill to full outdoor kitchens including mini fridges, sinks, grill stations, brick ovens, bar islands and more. Homeowners are creating everything from a simple grill station to a full gourmet kitchen.” Outdoor kitchen cabinets also have their own trends. Rita McSorely, president of Mastercraft Design, Inc. in Manassas, VA, is seeing the popularity of recycled plastic cabinets. “We are serving a client base today interested in saving energy and resources. When you tell them it’s recycled plastic, that is what they’re buying…They are also very low maintenance; you can just hose it down with a little bit of soap.” The line they sell is Atlantis Outdoor Cabinets. She mentioned that cabinets also tend to be placed between stonework at the moment. Smith said about cabinet designs, “Designer color powder coat finishes now account for almost 35+ percent of our business. And with almost 400 different size cabinets, we can accommodate any layout or challenging footprint.”

LIGHTING
Lighting accents add charm and nighttime functionality to the expanded outdoor living space. Stephen Miller, residential lighting division manger of Dulles Electric Supply in Sterling, VA, noted that low-voltage LED landscape lighting is a popular choice for lighting up trees, pathways and homes. LED lights see an average life of 20 years, as opposed to the 10,000 hours of more traditional halogen lights. LED tends to be more expensive, but homeowners are finding the purchase to pay off in the long run since the life of the light is drastically longer. For LED landscape lighting styles, Miller said, “Rustic and craftsman style outdoor lights are very popular right now, especially in our region with bungalow and craftsman style homes being built.” Though Leslie Graeser, lighting manager for Ferguson in Alexandria, VA, mentioned that fixtures with clean, simple lines and seeded or water glass are also popular in a lot of homes for the versatile, transitional look they bestow. Graeser also said, “Outdoor accent lighting is now being incorporated in the backyard as well. LED tape can be installed underneath your deck railing to give off a warm ambiance while entertaining. that LED driver and transformer technology allows for lights to be set up into certain “zones” to light specific areas like the walking paths, focal points and trees individually. “These zones can be set as ‘scenes.’ They can create ambiance and timelines that turn on and off automatically. This idea is good for security and safety as well,” said Cohen.

LANDSCAPING TRENDS
The goal of outdoor living is to fully enjoy the beauty of nature, so homeowners are also focusing on making their yards as attractive as possible. One way to achieve those levels of beauty is to make sure the yard is attractive with as little effort as possible. Low-maintenance landscapes still rate as a popular choice of homeowners. Howard Cohen, landscape architect at Surround Landscape Architecture + Design in Sterling, VA, recommends using more groundcover, such as ferns, to reduce mulching and weeding. Gardens continue to be a popular focus for outdoor living, with organic gardens becoming increasingly popular. Cohen mentioned that vegetable gardens with a decorative fence and a nice pathway to and around the garden tend to be popular. Some more unconventional choices are popular right now, including orchards and vineyards, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Often providing the largest space for outdoor socializing, decks and patios have a number of popular trends at the moment. Libby Fritsche, owner of Tart Lumber in Sterling, VA, remarked, “Pressure treated is still king. Curving composite decking is also popular. Now with composite, we can curve an 8-foot rail. It adds so much elegance to the decking.” O’Neill also mentioned that large-scale pavers are popular right now for their contemporary look and ease of installation because more ground is covered with larger pieces. Homeowners Joe and Denise live in a 24-year-old five bedroom Tudor. Lately, they’ve been spending a significant amount of time looking at real estate in different parts of the country, thinking about where they would live when they were both retired.

“We wanted to find a ‘destination’ property where we could both retire,” says Joe. “We looked at a lot of different places before we realized that we already had a destination property. It just needed a little bit of work.” So they decided to stay and invest in their outdoor living area. According to Joe, the project really started with the refinishing of the home’s existing pool. “We knew we had to redo the pool and that got us to thinking about other things we wanted to address,” he says. “One thing led to another and we started talking with several companies.” Ultimately, Joe and Denise found themselves most comfortable with landscape architect Howard Cohen, Vice President of Surrounds Landscape Architecture + Construction in Sterling. Together, they designed and built their new destination property. SCOPE OF THE PROJECT
The larger goal of this project was to turn the existing backyard into a brighter and more inviting area. To achieve it Surrounds created a flowing pathway that lead from the driveway to the pool, built an outdoor room that included a massive fireplace and plenty of screened windows to look out, and an outdoor grilling area with granite countertop. At the driveway, a grand entrance was built featuring large stone columns and a custom wrought iron fence that spans between them. Going through the custom iron gate, visitors are led down a limestone cobble walkway flanked on either side by single stem crepe myrtle trees. Moving along the walkway one comes to a circle with a small wall before turning left toward the new pool environment.

To the left is the outdoor grilling area and the entrance to the custom outdoor room. On the right, a second curved wall draws attention to the pool, where the pool deck has been replaced with limestone pavers and a small wall was added to create a second seating area across from the enhanced arbor. A staircase was also installed to the left of the house leading from a basement living area to the pool, so guests don’t bring water and chlorine onto the wood floors in the main living area. When entering the outdoor room, it is hard to not be impressed by the massive fireplace that is the main focal point of the structure. The interior features a limestone paver floor, custom ceiling and detail work that shows up on every part of this structure. A custom designed shed was also installed at one end of the property to help create another point of interest in the landscape.

A NEW DESTINATION
“The outdoor space is probably our favorite room in the house at this point,” Joe says. “We spend a lot of time out there, whether it’s having coffee or entertaining. Sometimes we light a fire in the fireplace and then sit in our bedroom and watch it.” Key to the design was that no glass be used. The room is fully screened in with a high quality screen so the room offers completely clear views. The room also provides a screened in space along the back of the house, across the living room, family room, sun room and master bedroom. “I can open the French doors to these rooms in the morning and never have to turn the air conditioning on,” Joe says. “That wasn’t possible before. And there’s no TV. The last thing I needed was another television,” he chuckles. “The most important thing about the structure, however, is that when you walk out into the back yard and look back at the 14

F E ATURE D SPEA K ER JOHN GIDDING | John Gidding has a fascinating background. He brings style, wit and talent to HGTV’s Curb Appeal where he takes unremarkable homes and turns their exterior into remarkable venues – thus increasing their “curb appeal”. He is a graduate of Yale University with a BA in architecture – he claims he became an architect because he excelled in math and art in high school. He received a Master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. After a stint as a landscape architect he moved to New York City where he established John Gidding Design, Inc. He began a television career with the ABC Family’s show Knock First. His first HGTV show was Designed to Sell , but it is Curb Appeal for which this architect-designer is best known. John and a team

G E T T I N G T O K N O W JOHN GIDDING Describe your design style in five words or less. Clean, Modern, Familiar, Natural Materials What design/gardening/renovation trend or item are you coveting this season? The accent tree close to the street. There was a time when a mailbox with some Bougainville or Jasmine was enough to create a focal point at the entrance to the path - but lately I’ve been placing a gorgeous, mostly-grown tree and training the path around it or running it next to it. The downside is that part of the facade is blocked from the street, but if placed carefully, this creates a sense of “discovery”, as you walk down the path. I’ve used relatively diaphanous trees like birches, crepe myrtles, and olive trees to great effect. What is your favorite room in your home and why? My apartment in New York is a small loft - really one large space, so it’s hard to pick a favorite “room” - but my kitchen which leads into my living room also has a piano tucked in between the two spaces, and it’s my favorite spot in the house. On one side, I have a custom-built stacked-plywood bar where I can sip my coffee, and on the other side my lovely Yamaha upright piano, which was my 30th birthday gift to myself.

What is your favorite organizational tip? Put it away now. My workspace can get very cluttered very quickly, so I started using this tip. If I use anything, draw with anything, drink out of something - as soon as I’m done with it, I Put It Away Now, and everything stays neat for much longer. (Not forever though) What is your design or gardening pet peeve? Design Pet Peeve – only downlights and no dimmers. You should have many light sources and everything on dimmers. Gardening Pet Peeve – cheap fountains that break and sit unused in front yards.

Ultimately, he decided to do an addition that would add significant space to the first floor and include a gourmet kitchen.
Bruce Baker purchased this Falls Church rambler in 1983. Built near the end of World War II, it had a very tight floor plan, including a 6' x 12' galley kitchen and a 6' x 9' dining room. After living in it for nearly 30 years without doing a significant remodel, he decided it was time to expand the entire first floor. “The house was desperate for a remodel,” Bruce says. “In addition to wanting more space, the kitchen was dated and the rooms in general were a bit tired. Outside there was a ramshackle porch across the back of the house that was getting ready to fall off.” To gather ideas for his remodel, Bruce didn’t have to look further than his neighbors’ homes. All the homes on his street are virtually identical. “They were all built around 1944 and had the same floor plan,” he says, “but they’ve all been remodeled in a different way. I was able to see how others had taken their tiny

A NEW DESIGN
The first step was to remove the back load bearing wall and to add a 12' x 24' addition. The old galley kitchen was then combined with the old dining room to create a spacious, more comfortable dining room. The addition would contain the new kitchen and a den. A key focal point of the new kitchen is a large island that seats three and lets Bruce, a culinary chef, entertain guests while he cooks. Light-colored custom wood cabinets with dark granite countertops are complimented by professionalquality stainless steel appliances and a stunning stainless steel backsplash. “I enjoy hosting dinner parties and the new kitchen is great for that,” Bruce says. “When I cooked before, I would be juggling pots and pans on my small stove just to keep everything hot. Now, with a six burner Thermador, it’s much easier. So the new appliances alone are a big plus.” Additionally, the kitchen is open to the new den area, giving breadth to the overall floor plan. Amenities of the addition include a 12-foot vaulted ceiling, surround sound, recess lights, palladium windows and a large bay window about the kitchen sink. “The new design really lets in a lot of natural light,” Bruce says. “And because the addition is built to modern insulating standards, the addition is much warmer than the rest of the house. they didn’t have the ability to do an addition. Later, I saw a Michael Nash truck that advertised additions, so I stopped into their showroom,” he says. “It is pretty impressive to say the least. They have several rooms set up that show their work so you can see a high end dining room, bathroom or kitchen. And you can review samples of all kinds of materials,” Bruce comments. “And you can’t help but see all the awards they’ve won for their work.” “The team at Michael Nash far exceeded my expectations,” Bruce says. “I need to give them credit for showing me that I could do the cathedral ceiling by changing the roof line, so the addition is more spacious than I ever pictured.” The end result of the project is a renovation that offers a seamless connection between the new addition and the old home, inside and out. Rick Nogueira and Diana Rojas own a 1950’s vintage rambler across the street from Rock Creek Park, a gem of the National Park System that bisects the northwestern urban areas of Washington, DC. Neither the design of the home nor its lot orientation, however, took advantage of the park’s beauty. So when the couple decided to add a master bedroom suite, they were determined to take advantage of their beautiful surroundings.

“The original house didn’t use the park as an asset, not even in terms of its window views,” says Diana. “So when we decided to add a master suite and an office, we decided to build them up high so we could enjoy the park views. Of course, we needed to build a perch upon which to put the master bedroom, so we built a new living room on the main level,” she chuckles. THE IDEA PHASE
Many of the Rojas’ ideas for the renovation came from living in the home for a number of years and thinking about what they’d like it to be. So they worked with a local architect to come up with a design incorporating their wants and needs. Others came from the interaction between the couple and their contractor, Chad Hackmann of Arlington Construction Management. “I had never remodeled before and had several ideas for what I wanted to try,” Diana says. “I’d tell Chad about it and he’d make suggestions about how we could accomplish it. And we’d move on from there.” SCOPE OF WORK
Starting with the original house, visitors would walk in the front door and there was an outer wall to the left, with the living room and dining room to the right. The exterior wall on the left was knocked down and the new living room was added to that side of the home. Designed with a conservatory feel, it features 10 windows, including five that are floor to ceiling, and double French doors, all looking out on the park. Then, that room has an open riser staircase leading to the master bedroom suite, which is a master bedroom with a stylish balcony overlooking the park. Again, the couple

installed a lot of windows and even made use of skylights. The office then juts off the house like a tower. “Another one of our goals was to keep the older wing of our home relevant,” Diana says. “A lot of times when people remodel, it seems like most of their living is done in the new rooms and the old section gathers dust. It seems wasteful and kind of sad,” she comments, “and we didn’t want that to happen.” So the couple added a piano and seating area to the old living room, so the space now provides a nice bridge from the new living room to the home’s dining room and kitchen. Ultimately, the couple has a lot more space for entertaining, which they really enjoy doing. FINDING THEIR CONTRACTOR

“Communication is so important to having a smooth project,” Diana says. “When you start a project, everything is hunky-dory when it’s on paper, but then you encounter a problem—or in my case, I just changed my mind about something—you really need to be able to work your way through it,” she says. “Chad gave us excellent straightforward advice and the work they did was perfect for the space,” Diana says. “We had a great experience with Arlington Construction Management.”

MEETING EXPECTATIONS
According to Diana, the project not only met the couple’s expectations, it far exceeded them. “I had to demolish a garden patio I loved a lot to make room for the addition,” she says. “And I was worried that it wouldn’t be as charming as the garden, but it’s more charming and I love spending time in the remodel.” In fact, Rick and Diana are so happy with the project, they are starting another one. The couple recently purchased an investment property on Capitol Hill. A Federal-style townhouse, they are going to renovate it and add a third floor. And they are again working with Chad and the team at Arlington Construction Management. NKBA Baltimore/Washington Membership Directory CERTIFICATION DESIGNATIONS The hallmark for kitchen and bath professionals, NKBA certification is based on in-depth testing and extensive industry experience. NKBA-certified members must also meet annual continuing education requirements. The NKBA certifies kitchen and bath professionals in various levels of expertise, and provides two distinct paths; one for the kitchen & bath designers and one for non-design professionals. According to a 2010 survey conducted by FleishmanHillard, 80% of consumers prefer to work with certified kitchen designers over uncertified designers. Members can earn the following certifications and have been identified throughout the directory. NKBA Certified Kitchen & Bath Designers NKBA-certified designers demonstrate comprehensive knowledge in kitchen and bath design, as well as construction, mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems. They are widely recognized as experts in the NKBA Kitchen & Bath Planning Guidelines with Access Standards, which recognize the importance of consumer health, safety and welfare in kitchen and bath design. Our certified designers are also well respected for their skill in assessing consumers’ individual needs and creating designs that meet and exceed their expectations. AKBD - Associate Kitchen and Bath Designer Applicants must have a minimum of two (2) years experience: one year with kitchen/bath industry; one year in a related industry. They must also earn a minimum of 30 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. CKD/CBD – Certified Kitchen Designer/Certified Bath Designer CKDs and CBDs specialize in the design, planning, and execution of residential kitchens and bathrooms, and prove advanced knowledge of technical and personal communication skills. Applicants must document a minimum of seven years experience: three years full-time residential kitchen/bath design experience, including design execution or project management; plus four years of full-time related industry experience. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam.

CKE/CBE - Certified Kitchen Educators and Certified Bathroom Educators CKE/CBEs are college instructors who specialize in teaching residential kitchen and/ or bathroom design. They understand the unique qualifications required for kitchen and bathroom design specialization, and they transfer their knowledge to interior design students. A college instructor achieves the CKE or CBE designation by proving experience as an interior design college educator and passing the CKD exam for CKE certification, or the CBD exam for CBE certification. CKEs and CBEs must demonstrate a minimum of seven (7) years of full-time teaching experience in interior design or a minimum of three (3) years teaching experience combined with formal education for a total of seven (7) years. No formal design experience is required. Applicants must also earn a minimum of 60 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved. Applicants must pass their AKBD academic exam prior to scheduling their CKD/CBD design exam. CMKBD - Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Designer CMKBD recognizes extraordinary experience and achievements in the kitchen and bath industry. The CMKBD must possess not only their CKD and CBD certification, but must have an additional ten years of experience in the industry beyond the date of their first certification. They must also have an additional ten (10) years of industry experience in addition to the knowledge that they have already demonstrated to earn their CKD and/or CBD designation. Five (5) years of this additional experience must be from full-time kitchen/bath design. They must have a minimum of 100 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. CMKBE - Certified Master Kitchen and Bath Educator CMKBE recognizes extraordinary experience and achievements of educators teaching residential kitchen and/or bathroom design at the college level. The CMKBE must have their CKE and CBE certifications, and must have an additional ten (10) years of experience in the industry beyond the date of their first certification for a minimum of 17 years of teaching and design experience. Candidates must have both their CKE and CBE certifications prior to applying. Candidates must also have an additional ten (10) years of teaching experience in addition to the knowledge that they have already demonstrated to earn their CKE and/or CBE designation. This individual is qualified to work with our certified designers to meet the needs of the consumer. The candidate for this certification must meet specific educational requirements and pass a comprehensive academic exam. CKBP - Certified Kitchen and Bath Professional CKBP is our only non-design-oriented certification; one that benefits all industry segments. In order to possess this universal certification, the holder must prove a high level of proficiency in professional knowledge, industry experience, and education in the kitchen and bath industry. The focus of curriculum and critical areas of knowledge is not centered on design, but in the areas of residential construction, general business knowledge, materials and product knowledge, and project management. Applicants must document a minimum of five (5) years of kitchen and bath industry experience. They must have 40 hours of NKBA education or NKBA approved college coursework. Education must be completed before the candidate’s application for certification can be approved.
