Certified Experts PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS SET PROFESSIONAL BUILDERS AND REMODELERS APART When choosing a builder or remodeler, you want someone with the knowledge and expertise to do the job right. That’s why the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and the Home Builders Associations (HBAs) of Raleigh-Wake County and Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties offer professional designations that help consumers identify builders and remodelers who have committed themselves to continually improving their skills and bettering their profession. CERTIFIED AGING-IN-PLACE SPECIALIST (CAPS) The NAHB has joined forces with AARP and several experienced remodelers to develop the Certified Aging-inPlace Specialist (CAPS) certification. Designees are trained to understand and respond to the unique needs of older home owners. CERTIFIED GRADUATE REMODELER (CGR) The Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) designation recognizes remodeling professionals who have a proven track record of success. You can count on remodelers who have the CGR designation to show a high level of professionalism and credibility, and those who earn it can be considered industry leaders. GRADUATE MASTER REMODELER (GMR) The Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) designation allows Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) to attain further recognition for educational excellence and longevity in the remodeling industry. Qualifications include 15 years of remodeling experience.

CERTIFIED GREEN PROFESSIONAL (CGP) The Certified Green Professional designation recognizes builders, remodelers and other industry professionals who incorporate green building principles into homes without driving up the cost of construction. GRADUATE MASTER BUILDER (GMB) The ultimate symbol of the building professional, the Graduate Master Builder (GMB) designation is for experienced veterans only. Before beginning the GMB designation process, you must have the CGB designation, the CGR designation, or the CGA designation with five years of building experience, or ten years of building experience and have completed three CGB/CGR/CGA courses. GMB courses are more advanced with in-depth instruction geared for experienced building professionals. CERTIFIED GRADUATE BUILDER (CGB) CGB is an exclusive professional designation designed to emphasize business and project management skills. Candidates must have: Two years of building experience by graduation; Completion of the Builder Assessment Review (BAR); Be a “builder” according to the following criteria: primary executive/owner of a company, superintendent or lead carpenter, or construction executive personnel/ employee who has built a minimum of one dwelling in the past 24 months.

Code of Ethics NAHB HAS A CODE OF ETHICS FOR THE NATIONAL REMODELERS COUNCIL. Top Outdoor Living Trends of 2014 BY MICHELLE LOVRINE

Hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a riddle: what has the beauty of nature, the comforts of the indoors and utilizes previously unused square footage? Outdoor living spaces, of course. Homeowners are discovering the full functionality of their yards and making them as much of an asset to the home as the living room itself. Following are some popular ideas to bring the luxury of the indoors outside.

FIRE ELEMENTS

Fireplaces and fire pits remain some of the most popular outdoor additions for their dynamic attractiveness and ability to regulate the temperature of an outdoor room, increasing the length of usability for the space. Ken O’Neill, senior vice president of marketing with Belgard® Hardscapes said, “Both fire pits and fireplaces are top choices, with fire tables on the rise. Fire pits are perfect for homeowners who like to entertain since their design is perfect for a large crowd to gather around. A fireplace creates a focal point in a backyard’s design and is ideal for more intimate settings. Fire tables are on the rise because they provide warmth, while acting like a sculpture or piece of art.” Michael Menn, AIA, CGR, CAPS, CGP, principle of Michael Menn Ltd., also added that a popular current trend in fire pits is to put glass beads at the bottom to make the pit glow a certain color. GRILLS

The mainstay for any outdoor entertaining area, grills are a reoccurring top priority for homeowners, according to an outdoor living trends survey conducted by the American

Society of Landscape Architects. Popular grill manufactures include AOG, Delta Heat, Twin Eagles USA, Fire Magic, UniFlame and Napoleon Gourmet Grills. There are many versatile outdoor cooking options available today. Larry Smith, marketing manager with Danver, Inc. said, “Homeowners are also investing in a variety of specialty cooking appliances that include power burners, pizza ovens and ceramic smoker/grills. Many homeowners are moving beyond burgers and hot dogs and are interested in expanding their menus for outdoor cooking.” OUTDOOR ROOMS

Many homeowners are now ditching the vague patio space in favor of specifically defined “rooms” outdoors, according to a representative from Archadeck. Specially separated areas may designate a living room for sitting and enjoying drinks with friends. Other areas may be for cooking, and still other areas may be nice dining rooms that just so happen to be outside. These areas might be separated by strategically placed decks versus patio spaces, decorative privacy fences or the addition of pergolas over certain areas.

Menn said in relation to outdoor rooms, “The most predominant trend is roofed but open areas, such as freestanding areas with a pergola. We’re also seeing a lot of curtained walls that can be closed off or opened up.” Outdoor kitchens are also getting more and more intricate to serve the homeowner who wants all the conveniences of the indoors outside. O’Neill said, “The interest in cooking outdoors is heating up with homeowners upgrading their basic grill to full outdoor kitchens including mini fridges, sinks, grill stations, brick ovens, bar islands and more. Homeowners are creating everything from a simple grill station to a full gourmet kitchen.” Outdoor kitchen cabinets also have their own trends. Smith said about cabinet designs, “Designer color powder coat finishes now account for almost 35+ percent of our business. And with almost 400 different size cabinets, we can accommodate any layout or challenging footprint.”

LIGHTING

Lighting accents add charm and nighttime functionality to the expanded outdoor living space. Low-voltage LED landscape lighting is a popular choice for lighting up trees, pathways and homes. LED lights see an average life of 20 years, as opposed to the 10,000 hours of more traditional halogen lights. LED tends to be more expensive, but homeowners are finding the purchase to pay off in the long run since the life of the light is drastically longer. For LED landscape lighting styles, Chrstine Tingen, showroom sales manager for Ferguson Bath, Kitchen and Lighting Gallery in Raleigh, NC, mentioned, “Moving away from the old, incandescent pagoda tiered lanterns and exposed brick lights, today we see the landscapes illuminated with multipurpose lights, including the direct burial light that is used for up lighting trees, shrubs and exterior walls of homes.” She also mentioned LED tape lighting is huge for creating task lighting in outdoor living spaces.

Tingen also said that the “new standard” light for outdoors is the combination hardscape linear light: “This light is not only extremely versatile but also eliminates glare in a reverse application of the well light. It serves safety and security in steps and retaining walls, as well as underneath fencing and benches… It adds drama without attention.” LANDSCAPING TRENDS

The goal of outdoor living is to fully enjoy the beauty of nature, so homeowners are also focusing on making their yards as attractive as possible. One way to achieve those levels of beauty is to make sure the yard is attractive with as little effort as possible. Low-maintenance landscapes still rate as a popular choice of homeowners. Homeowners are also using more groundcover, such as ferns, to reduce mulching and weeding. Gardens continue to be a popular focus for outdoor living, with organic gardens becoming increasingly popular. Vegetable gardens with a decorative fence and a nice pathway to and around the garden tend to be popular. Some more unconventional choices are popular right now, including orchards and vineyards, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects.

DECKING AND PATIOS

Often providing the largest space for outdoor socializing, decks and patios have a number of popular trends at the moment. Pressure treated wood is still popular, along with curving composite decking. With composite, manufactures can curve an 8-foot rail, adding elegance to the decking. O’Neill also mentioned that large-scale pavers are popular right now for their contemporary look and ease of installation because more ground is covered with larger pieces. He mentioned Lafitt™ Grana Slab, Lafitt™ Rustic Slab and Mega-Libre™ for possible brands.

NAHB Remodeler of the Month BY LAURIE BANYAY

Who started your company? I started the company with a good friend who owns a successful hardwood flooring business. Our first project was a beautiful spec house that lost money because we overbuilt what the market would pay for. After that, we decided to use other people’s money, so we went into remodeling. My partner got very busy with the new homes during a housing boom and did not care much for dealing with homeowners, so I bought him out after about two years.

When and how did you choose this career? When I was about 14, my family spent the summer building a rather simple cabin on a quiet river in Ontario. It was remote and off the electrical grid. Not owning many power tools and not wanting the noise and smell of a generator, we built the entire cabin with hand tools. While in college, I enjoyed the various summer jobs I had in construction, including flipping an old row house with my father in my hometown of Lancaster, Pa. Construction was fun work, but more importantly, I loved being my own boss. I was planning to make a career out of construction after I completed college. Unfortunately, I graduated in 1981, just in time for a recession with huge (21 percent) interest rates that pretty much meant I would not be able to make much of a living in construction.

How has the remodeling profession changed since you’ve been involved? I think it has gained more respect in the community. With the increasing interest and necessity of sustainability, the public is understanding that remodelers are the true green builders. We recycle houses. There are more remodeling contractors, who, like myself, are not particularly skilled at the trades. We know how to develop and manage projects, and can add a lot of value to the process of recycling, upgrading and adapting homes for our clients. Remodeling has gotten more complicated and demanding as the understanding of building science progresses, new products come and go, and people’s access to information and misinformation has increased. Running a remodeling company requires more professionalism than it has in the past.

What is your favorite item in your office? That’s easy. Because my office is in my home, I keep a dog bed next to the desk. We have two sweet, yellow Labradors and at least one of them is sleeping in here when I do office work.

The Importance of Getting

GOOD

I am often asked where to go or who to listen to for answers when it comes to making major decisions regarding people’s homes. Key among your decisions is choosing the right people to listen to. Over the years I have heard so many stories of disaster and near disaster resulting from people listening to and taking advice from the wrong people or the wrong sources. Although you will want to learn from others and get different viewpoints in making your decisions, it is important to guard against situations of the blind leading the blind. AVOID ASKING TOO MANY PEOPLE FOR ADVICE One of the frustrating things I often see is the person who asks everyone for their opinion. This can be dangerous for a number of reasons. The biggest problem with asking too many people is that most of them will not be qualified to

give you sound advice. Part of this “disqualification” is that they most likely don’t have all the facts, or they don’t have the necessary experience in the area, or they don’t have the time and attention to put into helping you with your questions. Although your family, friends and neighbors usually mean well, they are often not equipped to assist in certain decisions. Even though everyone has their own ideas or opinions about certain subjects, they usually don’t have all the facts, knowledge or experience needed for sound decision making. Although this is true in a lot of areas of life, it is especially true when it involves any decisions or plans requiring professional expertise.

When it comes to decisions regarding the design or construction of our home, we are safer to use the expertise and experience of a professional, rather than going to a wellmeaning, but uninformed, friend. One way to find a qualified remodeling contractor is to contact the Home Builders Association Remodelers Council in Raleigh-Wake Country or Durham, Orange & Chatham Counties. Their members are committed to craftsmanship, professionalism and a Code of Ethics. For a list of Triangle area members, see page 26. BE SURE YOU GIVE ALL THE INFORMATION TO THE PROFESSIONALS When it comes to getting professional advice, it is critical that you let your advisor know all the facts of the situation; otherwise even the professional might lead you astray. Of course, anyone who is a real professional will strive to get all the relevant data before giving their opinion. Unfortunately I have seen too many cases of that not happening. Unfortunately, giving incomplete or inaccurate information will result in an incomplete proposal and an inaccurate price estimate. DON’T BE FOCUSED ONLY ON PRICE All too often people end up choosing the “low bidder” and are usually sorry afterwards. Unfortunately, there are just too many instances of unprofessional contractors giving low-ball pricing and then cutting corners to make up the difference. I am often told by my clients that they can’t understand how others can price their projects so low. Usually what we ultimately discover is that the other contractor is not really qualified to do the project and often does not have the proper licensing or insurance. QUESTION THE LOW-BIDDER AS WELL AS THE HIGH Although it is common to question and possibly distrust the professional with a high bid, we too often forget to find out why a low bid is so low. I have seen too many cases of people 12

being seriously hurt by going with the lowest price for their renovation. Often what I hear is that people automatically stop listening to the remodeler who presents the higher priced proposal. This can be, and usually is, a big mistake. By continuing to discuss your project with both remodelers, you may find out that your project was misinterpreted by one or both of them. Often there are vast differences in the proposals. In the case of the low-bidder, there may be costly omissions which will get added in as additions or change orders. In the case of the high-bidder, it may be that the remodeler included high-end, optional features that can be eliminated. GET THE RIGHT PROFESSIONAL FOR THE RIGHT JOB Another aspect of choosing a professional to work with is to understand the differences in professionals. Although someone may be a professional building framer, that does not mean they are qualified as an electrician. Someone who is an excellent handyman will most likely not be qualified to do a remodeling project or build a house. I recommend you keep those differences in mind when selecting the professionals to listen to and to work with. ULTIMATELY, IT IS YOUR DECISION Even though it is important that we ultimately make our own decisions, we all recognize that there will be times that we may want to seek outside help. In doing so, there will often be conflicting opinions, so it will be important that you make sure all the data is available to anyone you consult and that you ultimately make your own decisions. When it comes to prospective clients seeking advice, the best you can do for them is to ensure that their advisers are also fully informed. The terms “universal design” and “aging-in-place” are often used interchangeably in the building and remodeling industry. While related, however, they are not the same thing. Aging-in-place generally refers to design accommodations that will support the changing needs of homeowners as they advance in age. Universal design, on the other hand, involves the use of products and spaces to their full potential regardless of the occupant’s age or life status. According to its advocates at the Center for Universal Design at NC State University (see its seven principles of Universal Design on page 14), “Universal Design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design.” Simply put, it involves designing for the lifespan of the home and its occupants. So your home will accommodate you even as your needs change. A family with small children might include multi-level countertops in their kitchen and bathroom designs. Active families might include a playroom that can later be converted into a gym or exercise room. A couple in their 40s or 50s might want their new or remodeled floor plan to keep all the living space on the main level. Or, they might want to add a mother-in-law suite for the future. And, finally, “aging-inplace” features like curb-less showers and grab bars in the bathroom might be included if they see themselves living in the home during their retirement years. Homeowners already renovating tend to be particularly interested in and receptive to universal design features since they are already making changes. Additionally, products enhancing accessibility have become more attractive and less institutional looking. Whether it’s lever-style door handles, comfort height toilets or lighting options, aesthetics have greatly improved. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE BATHROOM

• Zero-threshold showers offer homeowners both easy access and attractive design. Flush with the bathroom floor, they often feature a trench drain to contain water in the shower area. • A slip-resistant, textured floor can help protect both children and adults against accidents in the shower.

• Grab bars in the tub or shower area or next to the toilet provide safety and support for any user. • A ledge or seating area on the edge of the bath tub is great for bathing young children who need to be supervised while in the tub or for an adult who needs easy access to the tub. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE KITCHEN

• Refrigerators, cooling drawers and dishwashers can be built into drawers and cabinets for easier access and enhanced design. • An induction cooktop offers energy efficiency and improved safety compared to conventional models. Induction stoves do not feature open flames and the surface remains relatively neutral in temperature during cooking. • Leaving empty space under countertops around the sink or cooking area is valuable for seated access and flexibility. • A lower or adjustable height countertop and sink can make it easier to use by young children or someone who uses a wheelchair. • Roll-out shelves and pull-out cabinets make it easier to see and access dishes, pans and other kitchen tools. UNIVERSAL DESIGN FEATURES FOR THE REST OF THE HOME

• No step entry into the home and its main rooms (no stairs). • One-story living where the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom are all located on the main level. • Wider doorways and hallways that make it easier for everyone and everything to pass from one space to the other. • Better lighting helps everyone, not just those with poor vision.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. The authors, a working group of architects, product designers, engineers and environmental design researchers, collaborated to establish the following Principles of Universal Design to guide a wide range of design disciplines including environments, products, and communications. These seven principles may be applied to evaluate existing designs, guide the design process and educate both designers and consumers about the characteristics of more usable products and environments. PRINCIPLE ONE: Equitable Use

The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities. Guidelines: 1a. Provide the same means of use for all users: identical whenever possible; equivalent when not. 1b. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing any users. 1c. Provisions for privacy, security, and safety should be equally available to all users. 1d. Make the design appealing to all users. PRINCIPLE TWO: Flexibility in Use

The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities. Guidelines: 2a. Provide choice in methods of use. 2b. Accommodate right- or left-handed access and use. 2c. Facilitate the user’s accuracy and precision. 2d. Provide adaptability to the user’s pace. PRINCIPLE THREE: Simple and Intuitive Use

Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or current concentration level. Guidelines: 3a. Eliminate unnecessary complexity. 3b. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition. 3c. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and language skills. 3d. Arrange information consistent with its importance. 3e. Provide effective prompting and feedback during and after task completion.

PRINCIPLE FIVE: Tolerance for Error

The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions. Guidelines: 5a. Arrange elements to minimize hazards and errors: most used elements, most accessible; hazardous elements eliminated, isolated, or shielded. 5b. Provide warnings of hazards and errors. 5c. Provide fail safe features. 5d. Discourage unconscious action in tasks that require vigilance. PRINCIPLE SIX: Low Physical Effort

The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue. Guidelines: 6a. Allow user to maintain a neutral body position. 6b. Use reasonable operating forces. 6c. Minimize repetitive actions. 6d. Minimize sustained physical effort. PRINCIPLE SEVEN: Size and Space for Approach and Use

Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility. Guidelines: 7a. Provide a clear line of sight to important elements for any seated or standing user. 7b. Make reach to all components comfortable for any seated or standing user. 7c. Accommodate variations in hand and grip size. 7d. Provide adequate space for the use of assistive devices or personal assistance. Note: The Principles of Universal Design address only universally usable design, while the practice of design involves more than consideration for usability. Designers must also incorporate other considerations such as economic, engineering, cultural, gender, and environmental concerns in their design processes. These Principles offer designers guidance to better integrate features that meet the needs of as many users as possible. Many homeowners consider their backyards and outdoor living areas on their property to be critical parts of their home. As such, they often spend as much time and money on outdoor living areas as they do on indoor rooms and additions. Large three-season porches, decks and covered patios are turning up on more new homes and remodeling projects. Depending on where you live, you probably like to spend time outdoors and enjoy the natural atmosphere, fresh air and nice weather. Specifically in the Raleigh-Wake County area people tend to make the most out of enjoyable weather. With spring upon us, now may be the time to start thinking about adding a new deck. Extending living space to the outdoors, integrating home and landscape, making use of damp or uneven terrain, and giving a contemporary look to a traditionally styled home are just a few of the ways that decks make life a little better. When deciding what type of deck is best for you and your home, there are many things to consider. For example, if a homeowner decides to build a wood deck, they must keep in mind that all of the wood that is used in the outdoors must be protected against decay and insect attack. On the other hand, a homeowner might choose a composite deck. According to suppliers, the decking business has gone through an interesting evolution over the years. In the past, what most people wanted was wood decks, with cedar being the most popular. The next trend was composite, which proved to be even more efficient with less maintenance. You don’t have to stain it, it won’t warp like wood, and in general it’s less maintenance. Other than an occasional good rinse, they really are pretty maintenance free.” Reinhardt went on to say that “cap stock” composite decking is on the rise for sales. “These products are relatively well priced in comparison to the higher priced PVCs and the exotic wood species like IPE, yet have an excellent track record for durability and ease of maintenance over a number of years.”

So obviously, the biggest trend has been the move to the composite products. When these products were first introduced, people bought them because they would last—not necessarily because they looked great. Now, they last, there is a great deal of variety available and they are great looking. Most major decking suppliers have come out with their own brands of PVC decking and consumers are trying to decide which route to go. Many suppliers offer a variety of products.
