WARTA Encouragement Award Promising apprentice riders Randy Tan and Kate Fitzgerald have earned the Western Australian Racehorse Trainers Association encouragement award for June. Tan and Fitzgerald figured prominently after they completed their maiden metropolitan success at Belmont with Foxalicious and Jestpatim respectively. Tan rode out Foxalicious confidently, running over the top and getting the better of pacesetter, Shostakovich by a narrow head margin. Foxalicious was having her first start for Tan’s host trainer, Stephen Miller, after previous stints with Craig Wright and Ross and Clint Price.

Fitzgerald proved the key on Dave Harrison’s Jestpatim when the Patronize gelding ended a 12 start losing sequence at Belmont in May. Fitzgerald skilfully worked across from her wide barrier and had the fiveyear-old perfectly placed behind the leader, Forseen. The young jockey sent Jestpatim to the front with 100m remaining and had enough in hand to hold out perennial placegetter, Street Bandit. Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) Riding Master, John Claite, said Tan and Fitzgerald had been working hard and were getting good reward after travelling to all country tracks.

Congratulations to Randy Tan (bottom) and Kate Fitzgerald (top)

Gary's golden start to Kalgoorlie season Popular thoroughbred trainer Gary Bowen has celebrated a halfcentury association with the Goldfields turf industry by making a flying start to Kalgoorlie’s racing season. A winning double, provided by Private Business and Arsenal Power before a big crowd at the memorable Goldfields Anzac Day race meeting, maintained Gary’s run of success. Butterfly Kiss and Aerospatiale were other winners from his small team in early stages of the Kalgoorlie racing calendar. Private Business had won seven Kalgoorlie races for Gary, at the time of writing, in mid-June. The Key Business gelding is among numerous gallopers who have thrived after a transfer to his trainer’s Kingston Court stable, located within 200m of Kalgoorlie’s famous winning post. “Having a home and stables near the turn out of the home straight is ideal,” Gary said. “It’s only a short walk across to track work and the races. And, most importantly, it’s clear that horses really enjoy the environment here.”

Article by Ernie Manning

Gary said. “The veterinary board gave Dad approval to perform veterinary duties, until a qualified vet took up residence here.” Many racing visitors called in to chat with Tom at his central Kalgoorlie pharmacy, near the intersection of Maritana and Hannan streets, adjacent to the famed Palace and Exchange hotels. The ever-cheerful Tom would take moments off from dispensing prescriptions to willingly provide information on Kalgoorlie news and events. Tom had had left school at 13 and began his working life as a pharmacy delivery boy, taking filled prescriptions to customers, before he rose to be a pharmacist. “After hours from the pharmacy, Dad became a vet, caring for the treatment of animals and pets ranging from horses, dogs and cats to budgerigars,” Gary said. “As a youngster, I would be there to assist him in his veterinary work.

The 65-year-old Bowen is also well known as a long-time taxi driver.

“Dad reserved Sundays for his veterinary round of horse stables. It become my favourite time to accompany him and my interest in racehorses was consolidated.

Asked if he could write a book on his experiences in the Goldfields cab industry, Gary does not hesitate.

“Swabbing of horses at race meetings was also on Dad’s list of vet duties, and again I was his assistant.

“I bought a taxi in 1982,” he said. “After nearly 35 years as a Kalgoorlie taxi driver, I reckon I could write at least 10 books.”

“Helping swab a string of Kalgoorlie Cup winners, minutes after their big triumphs, are among my most vivid memories from younger years.”

Racing is distinctly the friendly-natured horseman’s main priority. “I concentrate on racing when our season starts early each year,” he said. “Then, there’s more focus on taxi driving after Goldfields racing wraps up in September.” Gary is first to admit he was fortunate to receive from his late father, legendary Kalgoorlie personality Tom Bowen, a wonderful foundation in racing knowledge. Goldfields pharmacist Tom Bowen was also recognised as Kalgoorlie’s veterinarian for in the vicinity of 25 years. “Kalgoorlie did not have a practising veterinarian over a long time,”

Born at Kalgoorlie in 1915, Tom Bowen, was struck by polio during an epidemic. He was left with a slightly crippled leg, but this did not stop him from becoming one of Kalgoorlie’s leading citizens. He was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Honours list for his services to the community and sport. Tom was the Golden Mile Trotting Club president for 15 years and also a club committeeman over many other seasons. In an ultimate accolade, the main facility at Kalgoorlie’s harness racing course has been named The Tom Bowen Grandstand. Features RACING AHEAD - July - 3

Gary's golden start to Kalgoorlie season The Tom Bowen Memorial is among Kalgoorlie pacing’s main events each season.

Looking back to the mid 1970s, almost immediate success was enjoyed by Gary after the granting of his own trainer’s licence.

Tom was awarded life memberships of the Golden Mile Trotting Club, South Kalgoorlie Fire Brigade, Kangas Football Club and Eastern Goldfields Kennel Club.

“One of our first horses was talented veteran Mess Fury,” Gary said. “Previous to joining our stable, he had been the beaten hot favourite in a Hannan’s Handicap.

He keenly supported fire drill competitions between fire brigades. Goldfields fire brigades have long competed with distinction when matched against teams from across WA at an annual clash in Perth.

“He came to our stable as a seven-year-old went on to win eight races for us, in addition to running 14 seconds. I’ve always thought he could have scored extra wins, if I had been a more experienced trainer when preparing him. He was a 1200-metre specialist, who battled to run out 1400 metres.”

Tom's widow Betty, 84, still lives in Kalgoorlie. "Mum solidly supported Dad in all his projects," Gary said. Before he took out a racehorse trainer’s licence in the mid 1970s, Gary Bowen gained more hands-on racing experience by assisting his neighbour, trainer George Grljusich. The highly respected Grljusich has been one of Kalgoorlie’s best known trainers since the 1960s and consistently developed quality gallopers. Moss Kingdom, winner of the 1984 Perth and Adelaide Cups for trainer Frank Maynard, is among a lengthy list of classy graduates from the Grljusich stable. “I helped George lead horses from his Egan Street stable to the racecourse,” Gary said. “One of my favourites from George’s team in the early 1970s was Prince Sharesa, who figured prominently in Goldfields cups.” Prince Sharesa was at the peak of his career when winning the 1974 Boulder Cup. Ironically, when Gary and his late wife Sharron moved to Kingston Court in 1994, George and his wife Pat, who had earlier shifted from Egan Street, again became next door neighbours. The families continue to maintain adjoining stables. The saddest chapter of Gary’s life came two years ago, when Sharron passed away, at the age of 60, as a result of a blood cancer. Gary and Sharron had been married for 43 years. Sharron was a pillar of strength to Gary. She shared his racing interest and owned gallopers in partnership with him. Their children Lee-Anne, 44, and Bradley, 39, live in Kalgoorlie. Gary is the proud grandfather of Sarah, Cody, Laura, Zoe and Kallum. Eldest grand daughter Sarah, 20, is studying at University.

Checking through Gary’s list of winners in the past four decades, it is apparent that most of them had originally been tried on metropolitan and near-city tracks. Gary has formed strong links with owners and trainers who regularly send him horses to assess whether they will be suited to Kalgoorlie racing. Perth businessman Frank Fiore has transferred gallopers to Gary over many seasons. “Frank’s been a friend since his years of living in Kalgoorlie,” Gary said. “If Frank’s horses are not up to winning in Saturday company at Ascot and Belmont, he’s prepared to transfer them to Kalgoorlie. “I’ve been fortunate to receive a number of his gallopers who don’t quite reach city winning standards. “Quite a few of Frank’s horses have been in Ross Price’s stable at Capel. “Frank and Ross have enjoyed outstanding success with winners including top class sprinter Smoko. “When it’s decided one of their gallopers will be switched to our stable at Kalgoorlie, I’ve found that Ross doesn’t hesitate to fully inform me on the horse’s training and racing histories. “Having this knowledge is a big advantage when taking on new horses.” The former Price-trained horses who have won for Gary in Kalgoorlie include Private Business, Bright Reason, Menuhin, Spanish Madam and Fire Side. Private Business, who Gary races in partnership with his son Bradley, was transferred to Kalgoorlie two years ago. He has been consistently placed in addition to winning seven races from a little over 20 starts there. He launched his 2015 campaign with two impressive wins. The gelding, who cost $100,000 at a Perth Yearling Sale, is a half-brother to Railway Stakes winner Covertly and prominent WA sire So Secret. “Private Business has been very good to us,” Gary said. “He’s no superstar, but is a favourite in our stable.” Gary, preferring to limit his team to five or six horses, has added a blend of interstate and WA recruits to his stable this season. Butterfly Kiss came from Colin Webster’s Ascot team. Arsenal Power raced in Victoria before being prepared by Ross Price and his son Clint. Aerospatiale had been in NSW. A win was recorded by Butterfly Kiss at her first start for Gary. He predicts the mare will have a bright future in Goldfields racing. The five-year-old Lonhro gelding Arsenal Power opened his Kalgoorlie career with a second and then a win. Last year’s Bowen-trained Kalgoorlie winner Formidable Storm and Bomber Bel were consistent placegetters for Gary, early in the current Goldfields season. Some of Gary’s other winners from past seasons have been Vino Vino, Kiwi Dancer. Star Of Burgundy, Pride Of Burgundy, Queen Of Burgundy, Ellenbrook, Dazz’s Dream, Not So Vain, Pierluigi Express and Canacskaroo.

4 - July - RACING AHEAD Features

Gary's golden start to Kalgoorlie season The Frank Fiore-owned Vino Vino won in Kalgoorlie at each of his first four starts for Gary. Kiwi Dancer won several Kalgoorlie races under Gary’s preparation. “He was a little stallion who always produced his best in races,” Gary said. “He enjoyed a lengthy racing career.” Bright Reason, Not So Vain, Canacskaroo, Menuhin, Ellenbrook, Dazz’s Dream, Star of Burgundy, Queen Of Burgundy and Pride Of Burgundy were multiple Kalgoorlie winners while at the Bowen stable. Away from the racecourse, Gary finds life as a taxi driver is rarely dull. “It has its moments,” he says. “Once, when I walked to the left of the cab, as a woman passenger was leaving, another woman passenger sprang behind the steering wheel and drove away. “It was a shock to see my taxi taking off without me. Fortunately, she drove for only a short distance before stopping.” Occasional fares to Esperance, Norseman and Leinster make Kalgoorlie taxi driving worthwhile for Gary. “We’ve got a taxi contract with the railways to take engine drivers to locations, which are often remote, when new crews are needed at short notice to take over driving shifts,” Gary said. Considering the future, Gary is keen to give absolute priority to staying involved as a trainer in the blossoming Goldfields thoroughbred scene.

UNLIKELY SUSPECTS Sometimes the most unlikely horses can turn out to be a good thing. They can be right under your nose and in your face every day and still you don’t realise. People can be like that too. “It’s the quiet ones you gotta watch”, I’ve always been told.

Thank you Eric for taking the time to educate your racehorses along the way. It makes them so much more attractable, more valuable and easier to find them suitable homes when they are finished racing. You are obviously doing all the right things.

From what I can work out, Eric Wake is a Thoroughbred trainer who works tirelessly around the clock (like the majority of trainers do,) so he can work in an industry he loves, while caring for and training his racehorses, all the while trying to make ends meet. Between his fencing business and training his small team of racehorses at Ascot, there is very little spare time to indulge in some of the pleasures in life.

Eric is successfully helping to increase the demand for and dollar value of retired Thoroughbred racehorses. No longer should they be given away for free, they are worth far more than that.

This is why, for a man who is so busy, I find it surprising that of the 7 horses of Eric’s Off the Track has assisted to rehome in the past year, six of them are turning out to be outstanding mounts in other equestrian disciplines. The 7th horse sustained an injury while racing, deeming it unsuitable to race and is now used for breeding purposes.

It is no spate of good luck or coincidence that when I am out and about at different equestrian events, the 6 horses Eric has successfully rehomed in the past year are absolute standouts. Congratulations Eric.

All of these horses have lovely manners on the ground and in the saddle, are good to float and shoe, they are very brave and not easily spooked and they enjoy their work. Could it be that Eric does more with his horses than simply train them to race? That he sees these horses as more than a business, and has their future livelihood in mind and not just their immediate racing future? I think so! Obviously he is nurturing and educating them along the way. Thinking about your racehorse’s future from the day it is born, or the day it is bought at the sales, or even as it enters your stable as a training prospect, increases the chances of the horse living an eventful and healthy long term life post racing. I hate to say it, without sounding like an animal activist, but a racehorse is not just for racing. Yes it is bred to race, but that does not mean when it is finished racing your duty of care ceases. Failing injury or bad temperament ex racehorses can move onto second careers.
