New greyhound recovery initiative launching 1 Feb 2024 From 1 Feb 2024 a new program, the Greyhound Recovery Initiative (GRI), will be available to provide funding towards the off-track veterinary diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation of a greyhound that is suspected or confirmed to have a ‘GRI-eligible’ injury sustained during a race, qualifying trial, or public trial held at a RWWA racetrack. As of 1 Feb 2024, all injuries formerly eligible for the GISR/GIFRS will be covered under the new GRI. Under the GRI, the ownership of the greyhound and all responsibility thereof remains with the licensed participant. Funding of actual cost (up to $1,500) may be claimed for the diagnostic assessment of eligible injuries, with further funding (up to $5,500) available for surgical treatment. Eligible participants may also claim the Rehabilitation Rebate of $100 per week (up to $1,400) to help with the cost of caring for the greyhound during recovery. For diagnostic assessment and surgery, participants may choose to use the RWWA-contracted veterinary clinic where payment will be made by RWWA directly to the clinic up to the capped amount for eligible injuries. Where participants prefer to use another veterinary clinic of their own choice, payment will be made to the participant as a reimbursement up to the capped amount. The participant also remains responsible for re-homing the greyhound if it is not kept as a pet or for breeding purposes after recovery. Any greyhound admitted into the GRI will be eligible for admission to GAP under the requirements of GAP’s current intake procedures.
