The Gaels put together an 11-12 record during 201718, improving upon last year’s 7-12 standing. Looking to clinch a playoff spot for the third straight season, the Tricolour set the tone early on with back-to-back wins over Lakehead and McMaster on home court. Their first loss came from the then nationally ranked No. 2 Brock Badgers in a closely contested affair that saw just a fivepoint spread between the two sides. The Gaels closed out 2017 with an 88-86 fourth-quarter comeback victory over Guelph on the road thanks to a clutch buzzer-beating jumper off the hot hands of Jaz Bains. To begin the New Year, Queen’s took two wins during their first four games, including an 18-point victory over then-ranked No. 7 Ottawa. In the OUA playoffs, Queen’s visited Ryerson and pushed the Rams through three-quarters. A late effort from the home side in the final frame sealed the Gaels fate, ending their season.

SEASON RECAP Picking up where they left off last year, the Gaels started the season strong going undefeated through their first five contests before dropping a result to Laurier on the road by just two points. From there the Tricolour sailed through the regular season, winning 11 of their next 13 games and rising to the No. 7 spot in the national rankings. In the final stretch, the Gaels dropped a tough result on the road to undefeated Carleton but would secure a bye and host the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA quarter-final game on home court. With another outstanding season in the books, the Gaels closed out regular season action with a 17-6 record to finish second in the OUA East. Despite going toe-to-toe with the Gee-Gees until the final frame, the Gaels would see their season come to an end at the ARC. Andrea Priamo was honoured with the Joy Bellinger Award for her excellence in academics, athletics, and community service.

The Gaels started out their season at home with a second place finish at the Queen’s Invitational. Up next, the Western Invitational saw similar results as the men would finish second overall again, led by an individual secondplace finish from Eric Wynands. The Tricolour would then make their way south of the border to compete at the Paul Short Run at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, where they took home first place in the Brown Division. In Hamilton for the Marauder Bayfront Open, six Gaels came together to finish fourth overall.

At the OUA Championship in Windsor, the Gaels medaled for an OUA bronze as a team. Queen’s was led by a 4th place finish from Wynands, who earned OUA first-team All-Star honours for his performance, while teammate Mark Schmidt took the final second-team All-Star spot finishing 14th.

At the U SPORTS Championship, the nationally ranked No. 6 Gaels were led again by Wynands, who placed 7th overall for first-team All-Canadian honours. Queen’s would finish 5th at the national championship – their best result since the 2013 season.

Opening their season with a historic run at the Queen’s Invitational, the Gaels finished first as a team over the dominant Guelph Gryphons led by a gold medal performance from Claire Sumner and a third-place finish from Amy Stephenson. Setting the tone for the season, the women’s team followed one 1st place finish with another at the Western Invitational, this time led by young Gael Branna MacDougall who set a new course record - the previous held by former Gael Julie-Anne Staehli. At the OUA Championship, the Queen’s Gaels women dethroned the 13-time reigning champion Guelph Gryphons and were crowned champions with 37 points, 25 points ahead of the silver medalist Toronto Varsity Blues. Second-year runner MacDougall finished first overall, earning OUA MVP honours. Close behind MacDougall were fellow first-team All-Stars Stephenson in fourth and Sumner in fifth. Queen’s coach Steve Boyd was awarded as the OUA Coach of the Year while his team stood strong on the OUA podium for the fourth consecutive year. At the U SPORTS Championship, the Gaels finished with a team U SPORTS silver medal thanks to the second and third overall performances from Sumner and MacDougall respectively. A historic 2017 season, the Queen’s women were ranked No. 1 in the nation – their first No.1 ranking since 2003 – for all seven weeks of the cross country season.

Queen’s opened the season with a pair of heartbreaker lastminute losses, first to the Carleton Ravens at Richardson Stadium and then to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the road. In both games, the Gaels battled hard and were robbed of victories during the last minute of play. The next couple weeks would see the Tricolour endure a tough schedule, falling to the defending Yates Cup Champions from Laurier and then to the eventual Vanier Cup Champions at Western. At 0-4, the Gaels had to fight to keep playoff hopes alive – and fight they did. Picking up their first win of the season and Pat Sheahan’s 150th U SPORTS career win as head coach, the Tricolour defeated Windsor on the road. A 54-10 victory saw QB Nate Hobbs throw for 486 yards and four touchdowns. Frequently on the end of Hobbs’ passes, Chris Osei-Kusi hauled 226 yards and three scores. Returning home, the Gaels picked up their first Richardson Stadium win, crushing the Waterloo Warriors 68-17 in the first ever night game at Queen’s. Under the lights, Jake Puskas dominated the running game and recorded a career-high four touchdowns. The Queen’s offence kept rolling when they hosted the York Lions for Homecoming football in midOctober. Touchdowns came from four different Gaels on the day for a 52-34 victory over the Lions. Coming off three consecutive wins, the final game of the regular season was not as simple as a “win-and-in” situation. While the last game against Toronto was a must-win for Queen’s, they would still need help from a Guelph Gryphons result over Carleton to secure the sixth and final playoff spot. Taking care of business in Toronto, the Gaels came away with a 59-38 win over their Old Four rivals the Varsity Blues. Nelkas Kwemo got the defence on the board, picking off a Toronto pass that he took 61-yards for a touchdown despite a fully casted left hand. A hot Hobbs threw for five touchdowns and one rushing score, capping off the regular season as the OUA leader with 21 TD passes. Adding two touchdowns against Toronto, Osei-Kusi championed the conference with seven receiving touchdowns. With the clock winding down during the Guelph-Carleton matchup, the Gryphons would take the lead with two minutes remaining for a 28-23 decision to send the Gaels to playoffs following the 2016 drought. Queen’s drew No. 6 nationally ranked McMaster Marauders in the OUA quarter-finals and were unable to complete their comeback despite a hard fought battle in the rain and wind in Hamilton. Entering halftime down 12-0, the Gaels climbed back to get within three off the foot of kicker Nick Liberatore and Gaels linebacker Mike Moore tallied a career-high 14 tackles. The Marauders would hold on however and a 12-9 finish would end the Tricolour’s season.

This success carried on into the first round of the OUA playoffs where the Tricolour dominated the Nipissing Lakers. The Gaels settled the series quickly with two consecutive wins, recording an impressive 10 goals scored in the process.

Heading into round two against the Concordia Stingers, the Tricolour would drop the first game but bounce back with a 3-0 victory on the road to force game three of the series. The Gaels would ultimately see their season come to an end heartbreakingly with a final 3-2 overtime loss to Concordia at the Memorial Centre.

Setting the tone early on, the Tricolour notched a pair of road wins over UOIT and Brock. Following a tough overtime loss to Waterloo, Queen’s bounced back with a remarkable nine-game win streak to position themselves as the top-seed in the OUA East heading into playoffs – marking the first time since 1989-90 the team finished first in the regular season. The Gaels matched up against the Warriors in the opening round of the series and stole game one in Waterloo. The next contest saw a loss that forced a third game. The Gaels sealed the deal with a convincing 4-0 win on home ice to advance to the OUA semi-finals against the then ranked No. 10 Nipissing Lakers. In North Bay, the Gaels took a 3-2 overtime victory over Nipissing and returned home to hand the Lakers another defeat for a series sweep. With the win, the Tricolour were designated McCaw Cup hosts and secured a berth at the U SPORTS national championship in London. Welcoming program rivals Western Mustangs, the Gaels finished with an OUA silver medal following a tough 3-0 defeat. Up next, Queen’s drew the first seed Manitoba Bisons at the national championship and fell 4-0 to the eventual U SPORTS gold medalists. In the consolation semi-final, the Gaels pushed StFX to overtime after a late power play goal from Addi Halladay before dropping a 4-3 result to close their season.

SEASON RECAPS WOMEN
The women’s rowing team made their way to Peterborough to open their season at the Head of Trent regatta. Louise Munro crossed the finish line first in the women’s single, followed by a 3rd place finish from Greta Chase in the lightweight women’s single. After a solid showing at the Head of the Trent, Munro would again dominate at the Brock Invitational with a gold medal in the W1X. Finishing off the day was the pair of Cassidy Deane and Paige Adams in the W2- event. The duo capped off Queen’s Rowing’s resounding performance with yet another 1st place finish in their final. At the OUA Championship, the Gaels finished fifth in the conference. Munro was honoured as the OUA Female Athlete of the Year after picking up gold in the women’s single. Deane and Adams clinched OUA gold in the women’s double, while Chase finished with a bronze medal performance in the lightweight women’s single. At the Canadian University Rowing Championship, Munro secured a national silver for the Gaels in the women’s single. Rounding out the day was Chase of the Lightweight Women’s Single who would go on to tie Ottawa for a 4th place finish. Closing out the season, the Tricolour competed in the RCA National Rowing Championships Canada Cup. A force for the Gaels all year, Munro placed 3rd in Canada in the women’s single – just 9 seconds behind Olympian Carling Zeeman. MEN The men’s rowing team commenced their OUA season at the Head of the Trent, where the duo of Alex Bernst and Nick Grubic put nearly 30 seconds between themselves and second place for a 1st place finish in the lightweight men’s double. Other top finishes included a third place finish from Gavin Stone in the men’s single, and another third place finish from Evan Notley in the lightweight men’s single. At the Brock Invitational, Queen’s pulled out multiple top three placements with Bernst and Grubic placing 1st and 3rd respectively in the Light Men’s 1X event and Elliot Hall and Robert Cadman second in the Men’s 2- event. At the OUA Championships, there were Gaels were on the podium as the men’s double team of Bernst and Grubic claimed OUA gold, followed up with yet another gold medal in the lightweight men’s double. Collecting another Gaels gold, Gavin Stone cleared the finish line well ahead of second place in the men’s heavyweight single. The Tricolour finished third as a team and Alex Bernst was honoured as the Men’s Athlete of the Year. At the Canadian University Rowing Championship, Queen’s finished seventh as a team, led by a bronze medal in men’s single from Gavin Stone, and a silver finish from the lightweight men’s double boat of Bernst and Grubic. The Gaels would be back on the water a week later at the RCA National Rowing Championships Canada Cup. Gavin Stone clinched Silver in the Heavy Men’s U23 single and Gold in the Ontario Men’s 4X 2km. In the Ontario LM2X, Bernst executed gold medal performances in both the 2km and 500m.

Looking to take back the Turner Trophy, the Gaels dominated the OUA with a perfect 8-0 season under new coach David Butcher and won half of their regular season games by a margin of more than 40 points.

With their clean sheet, the Gaels were awarded a bye to the semifinals and hosted the Laurier Golden Hawks in the playoffs on Nixon Field. While the game was tied 7-7 early on, the Gaels responded with 47 straight points – 14 of which came from conversions off the foot of OUA points leader Alex Colborne. The Gaels would take the game 54-7 and prepare to host the Guelph Gryphons in what would be a rematch of last year’s OUA Championship.

The Gaels, who were snubbed in their “Drive for Five” OUA titles at the hands of the Gryphons, would make no mistake in the final match this season. Just two minutes into play, who else but Colborne would nail a penalty goal to put the Gaels up 3-0. The defensive play began to prove its worth for the Gaels as OUA All-Star Kainoa Lloyd intercepted a Guelph pass and ran half the field for a try with a conversion from Colborne. The Tricolour were in business, scoring early and often with tries from multiple Gaels to enter the half up 29-3. Guelph finally put down their first try of the game in the 60th minute out of a scrum, but it was too little too late. Lloyd capped off the afternoon for Queen’s with his third try for a convincing 62-17 victory, and the Gaels seized their 23 OUA banner – the most in OUA history.

Following a one year absence from the U SPORTS championship, the Gaels looked to return to the national stage under the new leadership of head coach Dan Valley. Opening the season on the road against defending OUA champions Guelph Gryphons, the Gaels fell 38-31 on a tough final minute try and conversion. Returning home, the Tricolour quickly bounced back against Western during a 57-12 blowout victory that saw OUA Rookie of the Year Sophie de Goede notch 16 points. Hosting Trent in the playoffs, twelve different Gaels scored tries to blank the Excalibur 109-0. In the semi vs the Marauders in Hamilton, for a spot in the OUA championship the Gaels were led by Nadia Popov’s two tries, and came away with a 20-15 victory and drew Guelph for the OUA gold. The No. 2 Gryphons took a 43-17 victory, and the Gaels claimed an OUA silver along with a spot in the U SPORTS national championships in Lethbridge, Alberta as the No. 6 seed. In windy, snowy conditions that saw the temperature drop as low as -10 degrees, the Gaels dropped a 41-5 decision to the No.3 seeded Canada West champs Calgary Dinos and would move on to the consolation final against Acadia. Due to poor weather conditions, the Acadia match-up would be the final game of the championship for Queen’s. Concluding their season on a high note, the Tricolour defeated the Axewomen 38-10 and de Goede was named Player of the Game with a pair of tries.

Queen’s kicked off the season looking to extend their consecutive playoff appearance streak to six years. Off to a strong start, the Gaels secured a pair of back-to-back wins during their home opener weekend at Richardson Stadium. From there, the Gaels suffered a loss to Carleton but bounced back to secure a clean sheet 3-0 win over Nipissing up north. Enduring a series of tough losses and draws, the Tricolour salvaged a 1-1 result against the then nationally ranked No. 6 Toronto Varsity Blues off a clutch goal in the 86th minute of play from Michael Chang. The following game against RMC saw leading Gaels scorer Jacob Schroeter net a hat trick and keeper Alex Jones notch his second shutout of the season with a 5-0 victory.

A historically successful program that has earned a spot in conference playoffs for 27 consecutive seasons, the No. 5 nationally ranked Gaels looked to be right back in medal contention in the 2017 season.

The Tricolour started the season strong going undefeated through their first five matches with a 4-0-1 record. The Gaels met a couple bumps in the road during a pair of losses to the defending OUA champion UOIT and Laurentian. From there, Queen’s closed out their season with just a single loss to finish with a 12-3-1 record and second spot in the OUA East. With 13 goals, Gael captain Laura Callender finished the regular season as top goal-scorer and was honoured OUA East MVP. Also championing the OUA stats leaderboard, Jenny Wolever led the conference with niiine assists and 10 goals to total nineteen points – good for first in the OUA and second in the country.

For the second year in a row, the Gaels drew their rival Ottawa Gee-Gees in the quarter-finals. After overtime and penalty kicks, Queen’s came out victorious and advanced to the OUA Final Four for the third consecutive season. In another déjà vu game, the Gaels drew the Western Mustangs in what would be a rematch of last year’s fixture. This time however, it would be the Mustangs who would take the win with a 1-0 overtime decision. Like the season previous, Queen’s would battle it out with UOIT for an OUA medal, this time in the bronze medal match. Since their introduction into the OUA back in 2014, Queen’s had yet to beat UOIT during their eight meetings. This time however, the Gaels were ready for redemption with hardware on the line and handily defeated the No. 1 in the East with a 3-0 victory.

SEASON RECAP
Boasting a roster of young talent and a handful of key returning veterans, the Gaels earned a place on the national stage competing at the U SPORTS national championship for the first time since the 2011-2012 season. A team that went unranked all season stood tall against the best of the best led by OUA Coach of the Year Brenda Willis in her final season with the Gaels program. On home court for the first five games of the season, Queen’s got off to a great start with a 4-1 run. On the road to close out the 2017 schedule, the Gaels pushed Western and Windsor to five-sets before dropping the pair of matches. To start 2018, the Gaels picked up two wins during their next four contests to move to 6-5 on the season and jump ahead of both Toronto and Nipissing in the OUA standings. Back in the playoff picture, Queen’s would push a four-game win streak in the final stretch of the regular season and draw Western in the first round of the OUA playoffs as the third-place seed in the East. In London, a dominant 3-1 victory over the Mustangs would secure the Gaels a spot in the Forsyth Cup OUA Final Four in Hamilton and a matchup against OUA East first-seed Ryerson Rams. Queen’s outlasted the Rams 3-2 during a five-set semifinal to qualify for the U SPORTS national championship before finishing the OUA season as silver medalists. Drawing No. 2 Alberta, the young Gaels side put up a strong effort before coming up short in the quarter-final. Queen’s dropped their second straight hard-fought match to AUS champions UNB Varsity Reds to close out their season.

Under the new leadership of head coach Ryan Ratushniak, the Gaels improved upon last year’s 10-9 record with a 13-6 regular season finish, good for their fourth consecutive playoff appearance. On home court for the first five games of the season, Queen’s set the tone early on with a 4-1 start. Three road trips would close out the 2017 portion of the schedule and would see the Gaels notch a pair of wins in Thunder Bay and Windsor. Kicking off the New Year the Tricolour secured victories in six of their eight games, including a three-set sweep over the then ranked No. 6 McMaster Marauders. After a pair of losses to Toronto and eventual U SPORTS champions Ryerson, the Gaels would close out regular season action with a five-set win over Trent on the road and claim third in the OUA East. Up against second-seed Western in the OUA playoffs, the Gaels would see their season come to an end after a closely contested 3-1 loss that saw just two points edge the Tricolour in the opening two sets.

SEASON RECAP In its sixth year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community through many initiatives including CIBC Run for the Cure, Super Saturdays, Bell Let’s Talk Day, Martha’s Table Holiday Baskets, Cuts for Cancer and Shoot for the Cure. The VLC has expanded their Gaels Care program to include a wider selection of schools in order to reach more of the Kingston youth. This year the VLC developed new partnerships with the Autism Mentorship Program and the Pathways to Education program. This year Queen’s student-athletes supported many great organizations including the Run for the Cure in which Queen’s teams raised a total of $11, 350, with men’s rugby raising $24,000. This year’s annual Martha’s Table basket collection gathered 31 holiday baskets that our teams, clubs and staff contributed to and we are looking forward to our first bottle drive this Saturday. Pathways to Education is for youth in low-income communities and provides the resources and network of support to graduate from high school and build the foundation for a successful future. This year the VLC and Queen’s University Athletics joined with Pathways to create a supportive network for these high school students. The VLC held a Pathways to Education Day to pair our athletes who became mentors to the with Pathways participants.
