The Gaels Baseball team had one of its most successful OUA seasons in 2017. During the regular season, the team split all but one of their doubleheaders on route to a 7-9 record and a 6th place finish. Notable wins in the regular season were against Brock and Laurier who finished top of the conference and were the eventual OUA Gold Medalists respectively. During the regular season, Gaels pitcher Will Langford had a historic performance, throwing a no-hitter in the Queen’s victory against the Waterloo Warriors. The right-hander allowed just one runner past second base and stands as the only pitcher in Queen’s baseball history to achieve such a feat. In the OUA quarter-finals, Queen’s drew the only team that they failed to beat in the regular season, the third-seed Western Mustangs. Queen’s won the game 9-5, advancing to the semifinal and securing a victory against every OUA opponent. Queen’s met Laurier in the semi-final and battled until the very end during a hard-fought 5-4 defeat. Meeting Waterloo again for the bronze medal match-up, the Gaels defeated the Warriors 8-3 and took home OUA hardware for the first time in program history.

Its second year under the leadership of Jeff Bogue, the Varsity Cheerleading Club put together another successful 2017-18 season. Preparing and developing new skills over the course of the summer and fall, the team put together a very challenging routine for PCA Nationals. After a difficult first run, the team re-adjusted and performed a flawless second run to earn third place in the competitive Collegiate Large Coed division. Following several roster and routine changes in the winter schedule, the team had an incredible performance at March Madness and captured a first-place finish.

The men’s and women’s Curling teams worked hard all year to prepare for the OUA championships in Sault Ste. Marie in February. Hard work paid off and the women’s side took home an OUA silver medal while the men’s team finished tied for fifth in the province. The men’s team came together quickly and performed well, finishing 5-2 in the round robin with wins over Brock, Lakehead, Algoma, Trent and Carleton qualifying for an OUA quarter-finals berth against Ryerson. Despite a strong showing and an early lead, the Gaels fell 8-5 to the Rams in a closely contested affair. Of the four team members, two were selected as OUA All-Stars. The women’s team also finished 5-2 through the round robin during conference play with wins over Laurier, Algoma, UOIT, Trent and Ryerson. The Gaels saved their best games for last and went on a playoff run into the OUA championships. Queen’s defeated Guelph 6-5 in the quarter-finals and took on Brock in the semifinal. Finishing the match in six ends after jumping out to a 9-3 lead, the Gaels officially qualified for the U SPORTS national championship in Alberta.

The Queen’s Cycling team came together for another impressive season in the fall of 2017 to capture second place at the University Cup Series. The Gaels consistently had top-five placements across all categories, with the Men’s A team sweeping the podium in every race this year. Queen’s had a plethora of new cyclists who raced for the first time and showed continual progression over the course of the four weekends. The first race was at Albion Hills, where Queen’s cyclists took podium spots in Men’s A, Women’s A and Women’s B. The following weekend the Gaels made their way to the Mansfield Outdoor Centre, competing in a criterium, time trial and cross-country race. The next two weekends at Ganaraska and Hardwood saw the Tricolour rule the leaderboards once again across divisions. The final race saw the Gaels dominate the Men’s A division with first place through sixth place finishers sporting the Tricolour.

With plenty of great performances, it came down to the very last weekend to decide the winner after a hardfought season. The Gaels were able to finish second overall with 1,760 points in a close run with Toronto during the University Cup Series.

The Gaels Fastpitch team had a large class of incoming student-athletes, with a majority of players with no University level Fastpitch experience as well as seven firstyears. The young squad did well to adapt to the level of play in the OIWFA, going 3-3 during their opening weekend of the season. Adjusting to the vigorous travel schedule was a challenge for the Gaels, who travelled to Windsor and Western for doubleheaders and managed a result of a 1-3 weekend.

Over time, the Gaels began to settle together as a team and swept a double-header over Brock, with a 3-0 shutout win and a 6-3 win. The Badgers went on to clinch a berth at Nationals, demonstrating the capacity of the Gaels when performing consistently. A slew of injuries late in the season saw some of the Tricolour’s key players left off the roster. However, with a season under their belts, the future looks bright for the 2018 campaign.

Early in the season, the Gaels Fencing team produced strong results at every competition, medaling consistently and earning third place in the RMC Team Invitational. In October, Queen’s Fencing hosted the Queen’s Invitational. Strong fencing by Rory McEwen led to a gold medal with captain Gavin Crowder receiving the silver in men’s epee, Katie Heeps won gold in women’s sabre, and Jessie Pollett won silver in women’s foil. At the Men’s OUA Championship hosted by RMC, the men placed sixth overall. A notable performance came from rookie Matthew Litwin, who captured a silver medal in the individual epee and led the Gaels team to a bronze medal win in the team event. On the women’s side, Queen’s placed fourth at the OUA Championship hosted by Carleton University. Captain Jessie Pollett led the strong Gaels team to a silver medal win in the women’s foil team relay, while Karen Zeng headed the women’s sabre to a bronze medal in the team event. In 2017-2018, Queen’s Fencing had just under 80 members, with 75 of them holding Canadian Fencing Federation competitive licenses. The ongoing success of Queen’s Fencing would not be possible without the enduring and loyal support of Fencing’s alumni and friends.

For the second consecutive season, the Queen’s Field Hockey team finished fourth in the OUA. While the standing remained the same, the team stats painted a picture of vast improvement from last year’s season. The Gaels goal-differential in 2016 went from -8 to +8 with four wins, two ties and six losses. 2017 marked the third year in a row that the Tricolour traveled to New York State for exhibition action during pre-season training. Opening play against William Smith College, the Gaels took a 4-2 victory, followed by a tie and another win over University of Rochester and Brockport. The 2-1-2 record stood as the best record yet for the Gaels pre-season schedule and was a great start to the year. During the OUA regular season, Queen’s kicked off conference play with a 5-1 victory over McGill on the road before falling to Guelph. During the season, four of the six Gaels losses had just a single-goal spread, including match-ups against first-seeded York and second-seeded Guelph.

The Queen’s Figure Skating team had yet another successful season, training tirelessly and consistently demonstrating a positive team spirit both on and off the ice. The 2017-18 roster was a balanced mix of veteran and rookie skaters, and the Gaels quickly adapted to new partnerships, new programs and new schedules. Queen’s set the stage early on, collecting a bronze and a gold medal at first Fall Invitational, hosted by Carleton University. In the winter months, the Tricolour stayed active in the Kingston community by performing the synchronized program at the Carr-Harris Cup hockey game and showcasing select performances at FebFest in Springer Marker Square. Nevertheless, a clear focus remained on the upcoming competition at Ryerson University, where QVFS came home with four medals, including two golds. Concluding the season, the team travelled to Aylmer Ontario for the OUA Championships hosted by Western University. Gaels skaters displayed some of their best performances and managed to score five medals. Additionally, for the synchronized team event, Queen’s managed to improve their performance from the previous competition.

Both the men and women’s teams played in four invitationals, two of them being two day events at Waterloo/Laurier and Toronto. At the first event hosted by Carleton at Lock Marsh the women came in 2nd, earning a silver medal while the men came in first and earned the Gold. Our second event was hosted by Queen’s at Cataraqui G.C. Both our men’s and women’s team earned gold medals. The third event was hosted by Waterloo/Laurier where the women played at the Cambridge golf club and came in third for a Bronze medal. The men played at Rebel Creek and Grey Silo Golf Courses finishing 8th. Toronto hosted the next two day event at Angus Glen G.C. where the women earned silver, and the men were just out of the medals with a 4th place finish. At the OUA championship hosted by Ottawa at Lock Marsh G.C. both the men and women’s team earned silver medals. Queen’s tying for 2nd., on the men’s side with Ottawa.

The 2017 Queen’s Gaels men’s lacrosse team finished with an overall regular season record of 4-8. The team lost two one-goal games against Ottawa and Bishop’s after leading later in the fourth quarter and lost two twogoal games (7-5, 8-6) against the top-ranked team in the conference, McGill. These narrow losses were the difference from being an above .500 team. Leading into the year, the team knew they were automatically qualified to play in the Baggataway Cup as the host team, so focused more on improving with every game and practice and creating a better overall culture within the team. The Gaels implemented new systems on both sides of the ball and asked a lot out of the players physically, mentally and emotionally, to which they responded every single day. On paper, the 2017 season may not look as though it was a resounding “success” to the everyday observer, but this season undoubtedly created an atmosphere and culture that will elevate the overall ability and potential of future Queen’s lacrosse teams to come.

With a very young, but talented team, the Gaels had a very successful year. It took a few weeks before Queen’s caught their stride, however, by mid-season they were sitting in first in the east following wins over Toronto and Trent. The OUA championships included wins against Guelph and Laurier. The gold medal game saw the Gaels come out to a 4-3 halftime lead, only to lose, 9-7 and come away with a silver medal.

The season started out with dryland training beginning in September, with a team of over 30 athletes. In late November, 24 team members had the opportunity to travel to Foret Montmorency, north of Quebec City for an on-snow training camp. After Christmas break, the team travelled to Gatineau Park in Ottawa for tryouts, where after some healthy inter-team competition, the selection for the race team was made. The first race for the team was the Muskoka Loppet, a 15km classic race, held in late January, in Huntsville. The team had a great race with the men taking 1st, 3rd and 4th. The next race was the Canadian Eastern Championships held in early February in Ottawa. Day one was a gruelling 15km and 10km skate race followed by a 15km and 10km classic race the next day for the men and women. Colin Foley (17th, 13th) and Marlee Sauder (14th, 15th) led the men and women over the tough weekend of racing. The season concluded with an amazing showing at OUA’s held in Thunder Bay. The three races included a 10km and 5km classic, 3x3km relay and finally a 15km and 10km skate race, for the men and women. All athletes had great results over the weekend, including an inspiring top 10 finish by Colin Foley on day one and a drought-ending 3rd place finish by Marlee Sauder on day three, leading the teams to 4th and 6th place finishes overall.

The Queen’s Sailing team has finished yet another successful season. The team started the season by welcoming 24 new athletes to our large team comprising a total of 48 athletes. With new athletes and a new coach, the focus was re-building the team for the future after many senior athletes graduated last year. Queen’s finished 1st overall standing in CICSA (1st place collegiate sailing team in Canada), won the Team Racing Nationals for the 7th year in a row, were 3rd Overall at the Keelboat National Championships to once again qualified for the Student Yachting World Cup for the 3rd year in a row and finally finished 2nd Overall at the Fleet Racing National Championship, tied for 1st on points. All in all, another great season for the Queen’s Sailing Team - a dominant performance in CICSA and multiple top 10 finishes in the MAISA American division.

This was a breakout year for the Queen ’s men’s squash team. Without question, this was the result of the addition of some exceptional rookies, four of whom (Alex Collins, Alex Dorbyk, Euan Hannigan, Willem Atack) played within the top seven positions on the team. Together with veterans Cameron Butler, Spencer Lee, Evan Garfinkel and Kevin Chong, the Queen’s team managed to win the Jesters University Squash League Championship for the first time in the league’s nine year history. Queen’s followed this with a third-place finish at the OUA Squash Championships, winning the team bronze. With the loss of only Evan and Kevin to graduation this year, the prospects for the team in years to come look very bright indeed!

The Queen’s Women’s Squash Club continued its winning streak and celebrated a fourth straight OUA win in 2018. That win occurred on home court when Queen’s hosted the OUA Squash Championships in early February. The ARC courts were decked out in style with the help of many facility staff members led by Brittany MacGregor. On the final day of competition, the Queen’s women met Toronto in the deciding match for OUA gold. Both teams were undefeated in fixtures until this point, Queen’s having dropped just one match while the Varsity Blues had dropped two. It all came down to this final fixture. Matches were tied at 2-2, just as it had been the previous weekend at the Jesters Final in Toronto, where the Queen’s women had lost 5-2 against the Blues. Dasha Reddy was on court 2 and down 9-7 in the fifth, only to come back and win 119. Matches were now at 3-2 for Queen’s. Meanwhile, on court 1, Alysha Anzik was at 7 all in the fifth, when her opponent peeled away leading 10-7 with match ball in hand. Alysha proceeded to win the next 5 points to come back and win 12-10 in the 5th, clinching the OUA title. Co-Captain, Nora Abdelrahman Ibrahim, was named OUA All-Star.

Both the men’s (8th) and women’s (9th) swim teams placed one position higher than last year in the team standings at the OUA Championship. This season, five team records were broken: Victor Uemura 200 IM, Haydn Wain-Lowe 100 back, Men’s 4 * 100 Medley, Men’s 4 * 200 Free, Women 4 * 50 Medley. Individually, MVP Steven Lee was the lone U SPORTS qualifier and scored points in the 50 and 100 breast as well as contributing to the success of three relays. On the women’s side, MVP Ally Lecky was a member of four women’s relays. Men’s Rookie of the year was Victor Uemura with points in all three of his individual events including his 5th place finish in the 200 IM, while women’s rookie of the year was Julia McKenna with her 14th place finish in the 800 Free and contributions to three relay teams.

The track team enjoyed a five meet season in which 14 athletes qualified to represent Queen’s at the OUA Championships in Windsor and one athlete (Amy Stephenson, 3000m) made it through to the U SPORTS Championships, with a 11th place ranking nationally. Queen’s Triathlon came out of tryouts this year with exceptionally strong athletes across all four categories of competition ([Male/Female] x [Rookie/Veteran]). The first race of the year was the 2017 Wolfe Island Duathlon, an event the club hosted in September. Courtney Milligan, Maia Idzikowski, and Natasha Goncharenko claimed all three female podium spots at this event and secured a victory for Queen’s. In the winter semester, the team raced at U of T’s ‘Swim Row Go’, taking 5/6 podium spots and claiming another team victory for Queen’s. Podium finishers included Griffin Fitzhenry, Adam Sunavsky, and Daniel MacGregor in the male division as well as Maia Idzikowski and Moran Foster in the female division. The following weekend, Queen’s Triathlon had another strong showing at the 2018 Hart House Indoor Triathlon. The club again took all but one podium spot and won in the team rankings. Thomas Volz had a breakthrough performance to achieve an overall win. Fitzhenry, Sunavsky, Idzikowski, and Foster all returned to podium positions. With one race left in the season, Queen’s Triathlon is determined to defend its position as the strongest triathlon club in the Ontario University Multisport Series.

As the defending National Champions, Queen’s Ultimate was the team to beat at every tournament that they entered this season. Returning 13 athletes from their previous season, the Gaels cruised to undefeated tournament wins at Provincial and Eastern Canadian Championships. With numerous starters missing significant minutes due to injuries and illness, the team demonstrated incredible depth and determination throughout the tournament, particularly over a fiery Dalhousie squad. A heart-breaking loss to Toronto in semis followed by another to Laval left the ultimate team without a medal for the first time in four years. Special recognition needs to be given to the graduating athletes: Ben Blackford, Ryan Wilson, Jason Duiella, Justin Lem, David Tang, Noam McGregor, Decebal Michaud and Pascal Michaud. Your fire and love of the game will not soon be forgotten.

SEASON RECAP
2017 was a solid season for Queen’s Women’s Ultimate. Tryouts in early September attracted over 70 athletes. From these players, a strong class of skilled rookies joined the program. They were combined with a young core of experienced players and together created a very talented team. Our team goal was to finish in the Top 3 nationally. We played in three tournaments during our fall season, Steeltown Classic in Hamilton (Sep 23-24), Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships (CEUUC – Sep 30-Oct 1), and Canadian University Ultimate Championships (CUUC – Oct 13-15). Overall, we had a combined season record of 16-6 and made the semi-finals of every tournament. This year we did not earn an early bid to Nationals, so we needed to play in the one-day qualification tournament. Despite the pressure, the team performed and earned the top qualification spot. We accomplished our season goal (for the third year in a row), finishing 3rd in the country after a one-point loss to eventual champion Laval in a windy and very challenging semi-final. Most promisingly we had excellent skill development across the team, and the team aims to continue the success of the program well into the future.

A podium finish in 2016 set a standard players were not prepared to abandon. The team worked harder than any previous squad and put in the extra work outside of team practice to step ahead of where they were the year before. As the championships approached the program hosted the largest event of the OUA season, at the ARC, and the intensity here resulted in a huge upset over league powerhouse Carleton Ravens; the 1st win over that school in many years. That led to an increased intensity for both teams in the final weeks and while the Gaels could not duplicate that win over Carleton at their pool during the OUA championship they did dominate the bronze medal game over a very strong Western Mustang squad.

Our sport is traditionally dominated by club athletes continuing to play while they attend university. This year every team we played had more club players than we did and our roster was primarily players that picked the game up at Queen’s.
RESULTS • 5th at NCWP Championship
Each game, all season, was a step toward playing our best in our last game and finding the systems that we could repeat with success. The decisive win in our final game defined the season as a success, and most of our goals had been met. The competitiveness and character of this team have led to the largest recruiting class in a decade for the 2018 season.

This year featured strong showings by numerous graduating athletes and promising displays by the team’s rookie corps. Fifth year veteran Peter Shannon led the men’s team with a bronze medal at the OUA championships. He also claimed bronze at the Concordia Invitational and 4th place at the Senior Provincial Championships to open the season. Shannon ended his career as a Gael on a pair of wins to place 5th at the U Sports national championships. Fourth year David de Cotiis left the gridiron for the wrestling mat and earned a silver medal at the Western Open in spite of some untimely injuries. Brad Bergin showed major improvements and placed 4th at the OUA championships in his final year while PhD student Michael Tremblay was a consistent threat, placing 4th at the Western Open and 5th at the OUA Championships.

On the women’s side, graduating athlete Karly Kudrinko had her strongest season yet. Kudrinko earned her reputation as a dangerous thrower, pinning her way to bronze medals at the Senior Provincial Championships, the Western Open and the Guelph Open before placing 5th at the OUA championships. Megan Abel performed impressively in her first year, claiming a bronze medal at the Junior Provincial Championships and finishing 5th in the OUA. Fellow rookie Ally Sarah Zhang took bronze at the Western Open and narrowly missed the OUA podium, landing 4th. Katie Glatt returned to the mat with a silver medal at the Guelph Open and a bronze finish at the Western Open. Dual sport athlete Hannah Mather made her wrestling debut, finishing 6th at the Junior Provincial Championships.

The Graduating “Q” Award embodies these qualities and signifies the development a student-athlete experiences while at Queen’s. This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating studentathletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours. The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete.
