In pre-season play, Queen’s Baseball looked very sharp against NCAA Division 1 competition, losing 8-3 in an 11 inning exhibition game against Binghamton University.

RESULTS • 11-7 in OUA for fifth place • 1-2 in OUA playoffs

Queen’s Baseball had a good year and finished the regular season with an 11-7 record. The team swept Western and Laurentian and split against Laurier, Ryerson, Brock, Toronto, McMaster, Guelph and Waterloo. The season included a five-game winning streak, which was the second longest in Queen’s OUA history.

Queen’s had a disappointing playoff run, losing to Guelph in game one, winning against Ryerson to stay alive in game two, and losing to Laurier (the eventual champions) in game three. The Gaels were the co-hosts of the OUA championship with Waterloo.

The Varsity Cheerleading Club had a successful 2018-19 season, its third under the current coaching staff.

RESULTS • 2nd at Power Cheerleading Association Nationals

The team was able to develop impressive new skills throughout the summer and Fall and put together a very challenging routine for PCA Nationals. The team performed two impressive runs to earn a second place finish in the very competitive Collegiate Large Coed division.

SEASON RECAP

The women’s team had one of their best seasons in decades as they claimed the OUA championship title for the first time since 1994. The team saw Scott Davey take the OUA coach of the year honour and Mary Fay named to the OUA All-Star team. The men’s team closed out their season with a 3-4 record in round robin play at the OUA championship. They did see one OUA honour however as Alex Cormier was named an OUA All-Star. At the U SPORTS national championship the Gaels made the national semifinal but suffered a tough defeat. The team then wasn’t able to defeat Dalhousie in the bronze medal matchup and finished fourth. Davey was again honoured, this time as the U SPORTS coach of the year while Fay received the R.W. Pugh Sportswomanship award. Callie Barclay was also named a U SPORTS All-Canadian.

The Queen’s Cycling team had a dominant performance during the 2018 University Cup series, as they would reclaim the overall championship after seeing their seven-year winning streak snapped in 2017. Queen’s riders fought hard to achieve top spots throughout the four weekends of racing, battling for points against members of the 11-other participating provincial schools. Crucial performances at Hardwood Hills and Ganaraska Forest would show the team’s true abilities, as Queen’s would sweep the Men’s A podium during the back to back weekends of racing. With their close rivals Toronto contending for the top spot, it took until the last race in the series to finally decide who would take home the trophy. With the season highlighted by the overall championship win, other memorable moments include participating in three major charity events, welcoming over 11 new riders onto the team, and launching a new executive committee.

The Queen’s Fastpitch team had a slow start to the season picking up just one win in their first five games. The remainder of the season was a different story as the Gaels caught fire and went on to finish out the season 10-1 to tie for first place in the East division with an 11-5 record.

Queen’s started the season off with fantastic results at the Hugh Munby Invitational Tournament. Team members won Gold and Bronze in Men’s Epee; Silver in Women’s Epee and Men’s Foil; Silver and Bronze in Women’s Foil; and Bronze in Women’s Sabre. At the RMC Invitational, Queen’s earned Silver in Men’s Epee and a Bronze medal in Women’s Foil. At Brock, rookie Emily Mason won a Silver in Junior Women’s Epee. Women’s Foil and Women’s Sabre both earned Bronze medals at the Carleton Team Invitational in January. At the Women’s OUA Championships held at Brock, Queen’s finished 7th overall. Facing tough competition in the individual events Queen’s had six top 16 finishes. They rallied for the team events on the second day with all three teams finishing 5th. The Men’s team finished 5th overall at the Men’s OUA Championship held by Toronto. The Men’s Epee team won Silver, and Spencer McGregor came 4th overall in the individual Epee event and placed 3rd in the OUA Championship All-Star rankings for Epee. The Sabre team finished 8th, and the Foil team placed 12th. Coach Rodney Carter was presented with the Christian Vidosa Trophy for Coach of the Year.

Queen’s went into the 2018-19 season on a positive note. The team travelled to the US for pre-season to compete against NCAA Division 3 schools. During this campaign, Queen’s won, tied and had a narrow loss which put the team in a good position to start regular season play. With a tough start to the schedule, playing against the top three teams in the OUA, Queen’s began the season 1-3. However, with October came a change for the Gaels with an impressive tie to the OUA champion Guelph Gryphons 2-2. Queen’s then finished off the remainder of the season with three wins and a tie. The Gaels felt positive going into the OUA championships. The team had prepared for the quarter-final against the Waterloo Warriors and felt confident they would win and move forward towards a medal game. However, the Warriors came out strong, scored one goal, and defended against a strong Gaels counter-attack to win the game.

Queen’s had a fantastic year, with lots of team growth. This season each skater had the opportunity to perform in their event at one of the three competitions the team attended. The Gaels took on a handful of rookies, all of whom demonstrated exceptional commitment to the team and accelerated in taking on new programs and partners. The veterans were extremely welcoming to new teammates and fostered a highly supportive team bond. The team seamlessly joined together with lots of laughter, new friendships and positive memories made. The highlight achievement for the team was at Winter Invitational, where Queen’s came in third place, marking a significant improvement from previous years. The Gaels also hosted the OUA championships, and despite the significant winter storm that blew through, the event was a success all-around. Outside of competitions, Queen’s was able to showcase the synchronized program at the annual Carr-Harris Cup.

The Men’s Golf Team picked up a pair of wins with outstanding performances at the Carleton Invitational and the Bert Kea Queen’s Invitational. Rookie Zachary Greifenberger picked up individual wins in both events. The women had similar success taking the top spot at Carleton and second at the Bert Kea.

The Gaels competed at the McMaster Invitational. The women’s team finished fourth and men fifth. The men also finished third at the Waterloo Invitational.

The Men’s and Women’s Golf Teams competed in the OUA Championship the first week of October in Alberton, Ont. The women’s team finished second to claim their second consecutive OUA silver medal. Jasmine Mussani and Robyn Campbell were named as First Team All-Stars after both tied for fifth in the individual rankings. The men’s team finished 6th but both teams qualified for Nationals in London, Ontario in May 2019.

The Queens Men’s Lacrosse team made great strides in 2018 as they finished 3rd in the conference with a 6-4 record, knocking off a perennial rival, Bishops, and advancing to the playoffs. In the CUFLA playoffs, Queen’s battled Nipissing in a hard fought 14-11 match that saw the Gaels season come to a close. Chris Boushy was named to the All-Canadian team for Attack while Tom Asmas received All-Canadian honours at goalie.

The Gaels had an impressive 2018 fall season, setting the tone early with a win over the five-time consecutive OUA champion Western Mustangs. The Gaels would go on to finish the regular season undefeated with 12 wins and 1 tie. At the OUA championship weekend, it was more of the same for the Gaels who swept the competition to win the OUA gold. The team then swept the OUA major awards as Annie Lloyd was Offensive Player of the Year, Amelia Piccone was Defensive Player of the Year, Jordan Kummer was Rookie of the Year, and Mike Watson was Coach of the Year.

The beginning of this season had a lot of turnover as much of last year’s women’s team graduated and Marcus Nussbaum and Julian Alexander-Cook took over as student-coaches.

RESULTS

In November the team travelled to Foret Montmorency in Quebec for a training camp and tryouts. After a break for exams and holidays, the team went to Ottawa at the beginning of January for another training weekend. The next weekend the team raced at the Muskoka Loppet in Huntsville as a warm-up for the Eastern Canadian Championships in Duntroon. At Easterns Graham Shearing had a great day in the classic race and Nick Cheney did very well in the skate. The team finished up the season at OUA championships in North Bay. The men’s team finished very close to one another in both races and ended up a close 6th behind rivals Guelph. Nick Cheney led the way for the team with two top 25 finishes, and Colin Pogue finished off his time as a Gael with two career-best skate races.

This year, Queen’s took on 21 new Gaels to our growing team, and we also welcomed a new coach to our team, Jon Ladha, whose focus was to coach our sailor’s to success in the Canadian and North American circuits.

The Queen’s men’s Squash Team continued to improve on the strength of some great rookies notably Chris Howard and James Crook who, respectively, stepped into the #3 and #4 positions on the team. Michael Haffey, Jacob Zachariah, Will Francis and Nabil Merchant rounded out the rookie squad who joined returning players Cameron Butler, Alex Collins, Alex Dorbyk, Willem Atack, Spencer Lee, Euan Hannigan, Kevin Chong, Aidan Calverley, Cameron Meakin, Griffin McKeown and Caleb Morin. Queen’s placed third in the Jesters University Squash League and improved from bronze to silver at the OUA Squash Championships. This second place finish is indeed a notable accomplishment given that Western is the perennial champion, having won the championship for a remarkable 36 consecutive years.

The Queen’s Women’s Squash team continued its winning streak and celebrated a 5th straight OUA title in 2018-2019. After graduating five of their top seven players from the squash roster, this season was supposed to be a “rebuilding” year, but the team brought on five incredible rookies who led the Gaels to a dominating 42-0 sweep of the OUA Championships. At the OUA finals in Niagara, the Queen’s women captured their 15th OUA title in school history. On the final day, Queen’s defeated Western in a clean sweep, 7-0, to win the gold medal. Rookies Sydney Maxwell and Amelia Knapp were named as two of the six OUA All-Stars. Maxwell was also awarded OUA Female Rookie of the Year and OUA MVP. The team was also able to regain the Jesters title after narrowly losing to Toronto last year marking the teams fourth in the past five years.

Our 2018-19 season had a strong start with Minnie Fu placing 3rd at our first competition and our Duet placing 5th. The team then reached the podium six times this year and ended the season strong with two routines finishing in the top 10 in the country.

The distance core led the Gaels in 2018-19, with nine athletes making OUA team and five going on to compete at the championships—2nd year men Mitchell Delange and Mitchell Kirby in the 1500 and 3000; 4th year Brett Crowley in the 3000; 4th year Nathan Dehghan; and 3rd year (and team captain) Kara Blair in the 3000 and 1500. Our top results at the meet were: two 5th’s by Mitchell Delange and a 9th place finish by Kara Blair. Individually, the team had five all-time Queen’s top 10 performances: Brogan MacDougall and Branna MacDougall moved to numbers 2 and 3 over 3,000, with their times of 9:18.10 and 9:18.15, both run at the Boston University Terrier Classic, where the women finished first and second against NCAA D1 competition. The other three top 10 performers were Mitchell Delange and Mitchell Kirby, who came in at 9th and 10th respectively, with their 3000m times of 8:19:56 and 8:22.98, and Rookie Makenna Fitzgerald, who entered the list at 6th.

The Queen’s Triathlon Team had yet another stellar season. Competing in the University Multisport Series Queen’s Started out strong hosting the Wolfe Island Duathlon winning four of six podium spots. In January Queen’s attended Swim Row Go hosted by Toronto where the Tricolour again took top team and took 10 of 12 podium positions.

The following week at the Hart House Triathlon hosted by Toronto Queen’s took 11 of 12 podium spots. The University Multisport season finished in late March at Western’s Splash and Dash. The Gaels landed six of the 12 podium spots and secured the Multisport Series championship.

After finishing off the podium in 2017 the Men’s Ultimate team had something to prove coming into 2018. A disappointing 5th place finish at Provincial Championships forced the men to flip the switch and went undefeated for the rest of the season with a dominant performance at Nationals.

Pool play wins over McGill, Manitoba and Carleton secured top spot in the pool. Revenge was in the air as the team crushed Toronto 15-2 in the quarter-finals. Semifinals brought Manitoba for a second time, and with some adjustments, the team ran away with it 15-9.

Playing a well-coached and fiery McGill team, the two sides traded points to 8-7, before James Lewis swatted down two McGill throws on consecutive points and put the game away with an 11-8 win for the teams third National Championship in four years. Mike Mackenzie in his last game in the Tricolour, had a performance for the ages with four goals, four assists, and five Ds, and was recognized as a CUUC Starting Seven. James Lewis’s game-changing performance earned him Tournament MVP and CUUC Starting Seven.

The 2018 season for the Women’s Ultimate team was one of many triumphs. The team confidently walked into Nationals with only a single loss under their belts up to that point in the season. The teams offensive line had a few new faces who stepped up to the plate to provide consistency to the team. Defensively the team had many new additions who’s athletic ability was unmatched on the field. Overall a team with half returners and half new faces won the silver medal at Nationals in 2018.

Coming into the season the men’s team had the goal of playing in the OUA championship final and the team achieved that. Despite a one-goal loss in the championship, the Gaels were able to take lessons in what it takes to beat a perennial champion. Queen’s finished as the OUA silver medalists, their best result in many years. The OUA honoured goalie Trevor Robinson as the OUA most valuable goaltender.

SEASON RECAP

The women were the number two seed all season after a 5th place finishes in each of the past two years. The Gaels went into the championship looking to medal but dropped both a semifinal and Bronze medal games by single goals. Overall it was a great season for the Gaels who will look to find the podium in years to come.

SEASON RECAP

The 2018-19 season proved to be successful for the Queen’s wrestling team. Strong individual performances resulted in medals at several tournaments throughout the season. At the OUA Championships, the women’s team finished 6th overall while the men’s team placed 9th. The women were led by Megan Abel (51 kg) and Karly Kudrinko (55 kg) who both won bronze in their respective weight classes, while Sylvie Lefebvre (72 kg) placed fifth. On the men’s side, Michael Tremblay (76 kg) placed fourth, and Tony Nguyen (61 kg) placed fifth. The Gaels had four athletes who qualified to compete at the U SPORTS Championships hosted by the University of Calgary. While competing against the top university level wrestlers in the country, Michael Tremblay placed 5th, Karly Kudrinko and Megan Abel both placed 6th, and Tony Nguyen placed 7th.

SEASON RECAP

In its seventh year, the Varsity Leadership Council (VLC) continued working towards connecting Queen’s athletes with the Kingston community through many initiatives. In September, the VLC donated 643 pounds of food to Partner’s in Mission Food Bank at the Athlete Welcome Back BBQ. A generous amount of $39,226 was raised for the Run for the Cure, with the Men’s rugby team leading the way with raising over $30,000 of the final amount. In December the VLC coordinated the annual Martha’s Table Holiday baskets. The student-athletes teamed up to donate 35 food baskets and over 600 dollars to Martha’s Table, a nonprofit organization that provides nutritious meals for those in need. Over the year the VLC hosted two Super Saturdays which supported the Autism Mentorship program and created awareness for mental health initiatives with Bell Let’s Talk day and jack.org. The VLC had a great time getting to meet some aspiring Gaels on Pathways to Education Day. Pathways to Education Day aims to support first generation students of sport and personal development. The day consisted of playing games, hanging out, and listening to some amazing speakers talk about their experiences with adversity, hard work, and believing in one’s self.

Team Representative: Each team is encouraged to have one representative voice on the council. Returning athletes in any year are eligible for the position. The VLC also had the opportunity to participate in Motionball as well as Heart and Stroke Canada fundraisers. Lastly, the VLC was nominated for the Association of Fundraising Professionals, South Eastern Ontario Chapter Award for Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy for dedicating their time to volunteering efforts in the Kingston community.

THE GRADUATING ‘Q’ AWARD Successful, Strong, Bold, Proud, Inspiring, Perseverant… these are the attributes of Queen’s student-athletes. The Graduating “Q” Award embodies these qualities and signifies the development a student-athlete experiences while at Queen’s.

FIELD HOCKEY

This award is made from slate, a metamorphic rock that has undergone alteration through heat and pressure to form its current state. Slate also symbolizes a record of performance and represents a new beginning. Graduating studentathletes have been tested by the combined rigors of athletics and academics during their career at Queen’s. The personal growth you have experienced as a student-athlete has prepared you for success in future endeavours.

LACROSSE

The Graduating “Q” is a constant reminder of your experience as a student-athlete. The commitment, perseverance, joy, pain, and ultimately the successes you have achieved are all represented by this award. The Marion Ross Trophy, named in honour of Queen’s first athletic director, was presented by the Women’s P.H.E. Alumnae Association in 1981. The Jack Jarvis Trophy, presented in 1963 by Queen’s boxers in memory of their long-time coach.
