He’s a man who needs no introduction, but we are going to give him one anyway… A British TV and radio legend, a champion of funk and soul music, and voice of Robot Wars (one of our favs at Dorset Music). We take a look at the man behind the music just before he returns to Bournemouth for a second time this year, after his debut at Canvas last month sold out in under a day. Rewind back to 2014, I am knocking back a few pre drinks before On The Bus Festivals warm up show at one of my fav locals; The Winchester. Craig Charles is booked to headline and the gig sold out last week, it was looking like a good night! I arrived early to grab a pint and hear some of the local supports warming up the room, the mix of different people in the venue was the first thing that grabbed me. A massive range of ages, subcultures and people from all walks of life filled the venue, anticipation hanging in the air.

grinning ear to ear, he had an aura of easiness about him as he worked his way through the crowd, saying hello to his fans like he had known them for years. Cue 30 mins later when made his way to the decks, still grinning, armed with a bottle of Grey Goose and a massive box of cds.. His set spanned decades of funk and soul, with some world music and assorted crowd pleasers thrown in for good measure. The dance floor is rammed for his whole set and good vibes extend to the entire venue. Craig’s enthusiasm is infectious, and the sheer labour of love that goes into his set is a testiment the man’s love of funk and soul music. The two hours he is on stage for flies by leaving the audience exuberant, sweaty and eager for his next visit. As for Craig Charles, I heard he is doing another festival tomorrow, and just like that the funk and soul club rolls on to the next town.

11:30 and Craig Charles burst through the door,

Craig Charles began his career as a contemporary and urban performance poet on the British cabaret circuit, as well being heavily involved in the Liverpool music scene. In 1980, he was playing in the rock band

Watt 4, before progressing into stand up comedy and later on becoming a regular panellist on Ned Sherrin’s radio 4 chat show Loose Ends. The big time was just around the corner and in 1988 Charles starred in cult classic Red Dwarf. This led to hosting Robot Wars, Takeshi’s Castle, Coronation Street and numerous other acting/presenting roles throughout his life.

After Watt 4 Craig participated in a few other bands, Craig Charles and the Beat Burglars and The Sons of Gordon Gekko before forming the critically lauded supergroup Fantasy Funk Band. Formed from suggestions from the radio show’s listeners to vote for their perfect British funk band the line-up included funk legends James Taylor, Eddie Roberts, Ernie McKone, Mike Bandoni , John Turrell, Dionne Charles, Chip Wickham and Snowboy.

Catch the Craig Charles funk and soul club at Canvas on Friday 8th of July, a handful of tickets are available in the bar and online from www.canvasbournemouth.com

But; onto the music! Craig’s first regular radio gig came in the early 90s as the breakfast presenter for London Radio Station Kiss 100, before settling into radio 6 in 2002 hosting The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Club. The show highlighted funk and soul across all eras, showcasing the classics, some rarities and priding itself on giving radio time to new up and coming bands. The funk and soul club was also broadcast on radio 2 from 2014, and is the brand that he tours relentlessly between his other projects.

TEN YEARS OF 60 MILLION POSTCARDS - A RETROSPECTIVE PREVIEW By Tom Blay

Ten years ago, music aficionados across Dorset began to take note of a new venue that was making all the right noise in an otherwise ambivalent Bournemouth scene. A venue to fill a void left by the closure of Mr Smiths, to match the occasional ethos of the prephone company Opera House, to compliment the scene that was focussed around indie/electro haven of The Consortium and the fun times of Dusk ’til Dawn.

The precedent was set on the opening weekend. Fabric residents The Filthy Dukes and legendary DJ Jon Carter made an appearance. Bugged Out, Eat Your Own Ears and Optimo had a say, to give an indication to size and quality of the party producers that Postcards would work with. The Rakes offered a nod towards the indie bands while Bournemouth’s own Geek Chic Soundsystem kept it local and consistent.

While other venues closed and fashions changed, Postcards kept up to date. Luring contemporary acts while a discreet nod to the originals and inspirations remain. Scratch a beard one night, shake your limbs the next, sometimes - both. Enough craft beers to sip whilst pursuing the latest issue of Vice, plenty of burgers and fried chicken to feast on while your vegan buddies tucked in too.

Over this time, Postcards has also acted as a creative hub. Independent art exhibitions and A lot can happen in a decade. Dubheart are one of Bournemouth’s most established and resilient bands, having been together for around 17 years, their resume is more than impressive, having toured all over Europe, been on TV and being named best reggae band in Europe. Dorset Music caught up with the guys ahead of their headline slot at Chaplins annual Greenpeace alldayer and their BBC TV appearance on ‘The UKs best part time band’, a new show presented by Rhod Gilbert and Jazzie B.

D

ubheart started in 1999 with Mark on bass and his brother Nick on guitar and vocals and Gav on drums, Steve joined on bongos and then Richie on guitar and another singer called Lance . A few others came and went, that was the early Dubheart at one point there was 10 and it was a bit chaotic at times. After Nick left we had no singer and for a while there were just 4 of us, then we met Dave who joined us in 2006 playing keys, and we worked for a couple of years with singer Zacheous Jackson, and did some shows with Prince Jamo. In 2008 we linked with Tenja, who could only sing in French at the time! So the current sound is about 6 years old now.

If you could tour with anyone who would it be? Gav - The late great Culture. Stevie Bongo - Jamiroquai Dave - Misty in Roots Mark - Misty in Roots Tenja - Groundation Richy - Mad Professor

Speaking of tours, any survival tips?

Steves frisbee has been great thing to have along, there’s often a lot of hanging around in between travel and shows so its important to have something positive to do instead of tucking in to the beers.

And keep respectful of each other, it can be hard living closely with each other for a long period of time, it certainly has been a test for us!

Do you guys still get nervous before big shows?

Not too much, only if we forget the set list!

How has the local music scene changed since your formation in 1999?

When we first started we were more involved in the local scene along with some other very good bands that would often play gigs together. There were a few more live music venues then too, musicians would often mix with other bands a bit more as well, maybe they still do, we’re not such a part of the current local circuit now a days to comment.

How has winning Rototom Reggae Contest and being named best reggae band in europe affected your band and your lives? It was a great experience to take part and to win the contest, we don’t normally go in for competitions as such but this one took us to Europe to play in front of thousands of people in 7 different countries. It did expose

us to a much wider audience and set our minds for the possibilities available outside of our local community. Now our name has been out there we hope to be able to step back out when we’re ready.

How did the mad professor collaboration come about and what was the experience like?

Gav had met him a few times through a mutual friend and had shared our music with him. After the European tour and international release of the Mental slavery album we approached him to see if he would like to produce an album for us, we played him some test versions of new material which he thought was ok and we agreed to rework some old Ariwa tracks alongside ours. We spent a few days at Ariwa and layed down 17 tracks to 24 track 2 inch reel to reel tape. It was great to see how he works and be around such a busy working reggae studio... And it was really busy! It was hoped the album would be ready sooner but he is a very busy artist touring all round the world so we wait and see what will come from him when he’s ready.

You’ve recently been filming for a new BBC show ‘the UKs best part time band’, do you think this will be a stepping stone to the big time?

We don’t know... We’re just hoping they have been kind to us in the editing stage!! Hopefully again it will expose our music to another wider audience, this time the great British public. It’lll be interesting to see what sort of response it gets. We played along side all sorts of different genres of music at the live show recordings, it was mostly a lot of fun even though it was quite nerve wracking for the first few times we had to speak in front of the cameras.

When can we see you on TV then?

There will be 4 shows in June to launch the BBC’s new get playing initiative, 3 to start with on BBC 4 showing the bands from the 3 different regions on Fridays 3rd, 10th, and 17th and one final show soon after, with the chosen finalists on BBC 2... We can’t tell you anymore than that, so you’ll have to tune in to find out what happens!

Whats next for Dubheart?

We were required to perform four cover versions for the BBC show, so we decided to record these and make them available online. We recorded them at KarnaTone studio with Fullness and were mixed there also with dub mixes of each of track. They became a 12 track album which is titled “Full time pressure” which will be available at all digital outlets on 3rd June. We’re also excited to be involved with the first year of the Wilkswood Reggae festival, a local all reggae family friendly festival on the 23rd July at Wilkswood farm Purbecks, check the FB events page for more info. As well as other gigs around the country this summer some of the local ones we’re also playing are Boomtown, Grooves On The Green, Cellar Bar Greenpeace and Boscombe Community Fair. Keep an eye on the website for the movements

“ Seeing a full dub-reggae band perform in a ten foot by ten foot lounge was amazing. They must have the most understanding neighbours in the land because there was reggae piling out of there at 10 o’clock at night. They live and breathe reggae, they’ve been doing it for 18 years in this guy’s lounge. Having the chance to see where these people get together to perfect their talent isn’t something I’ve had the chance to do previously. And I’ve got to admit that sometimes it was exceptionally moving and exciting.” - Rhod Gilbert

DORSET MUSIC | JUNE 2016

LISTINGS

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk The Festival season is well under way and over the summer music fans have a choice of over 50 different festivals Kadia available within a short drive of Bournemouth. This month sees the return of Hen Fest and if there was ever any incentive needed to spend a weekend in a field with a Gigs of the Month whole host of top local bands then Hen Fest provides it. The motive started five years ago when music loving Kate Wed 1st Jun 19:00 Canvas, Bournemouth : Shalamar Hennessy could not go to any music festivals due to having Thu 2nd Jun 20:00 Mr. Kyps, Poole : Zebrahead + Support Sat 4th Jun 19:00 Anvil, Bournemouth : Death Remains+ Lay Siege + Cystic Fibrosis. Kate’s Mother Gail was not going to have her little girl disappointed, so she set up Hen-Fest in their own back garden to keep her beloved daughter entertained. Five years later Kate had a lifesaving double liver transplant and now the festival has grown to its new home in the water meadows adjacent to Julian’s Bridge in Wimborne. The very passionate Hennessy Family and friends, with Gail Stuart at the helm, have all worked tirelessly to set everything up with the sole aim of raising much-needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers. Last year the festival raised over £9,000 and this year they aim to top that. The festival takes place between 17th-18th June featuring a mouth-watering line up of acts including Discos Out(Murders In), Black Water County, Quinns Quinney, The Trav Cats, Tom Clements, The Drew Allen Band, The Worry Dolls, Will McNichol & Luke Selby, The Darwin’s and many more. Tickets can be purchased from the festivals website here: http://henfest.org.uk
