The Return of Imperial Leisure! been this time? We’ve been dipping Do you have a funny/happy/silly James Wadsworth spoke to Dennis of Imperial Leisure about guerrilla gigs, the 10-year anniversary, exclusives for 2019 and much more ahead of their upcoming Bournemouth gig. Hey Dennis! You’re coming to Bournemouth, when and where? We’re coming to Bournemouth, December 15th, to Buffalo in Lansdowne, Bournemouth. Really looking forward to it, Christmas bash and all that. Tell me about the style of band and what people can expect from your upcoming Bournemouth gig? We’re a mixed bag, we’ve got a bit of everything in there. If you like a bit of ska, if you like a bit of hip-hop jump around sort of stuff we could be a flavour for you. We throw in altrock and punk as well, anyone who’s a lover of specials or old school 90s type of rap or Beastie Boys is going to into what we do. What does playing in Bournemouth mean to you? Bournemouth has been amazing, we’ve always had a really good time. It’s been a while since we’ve been back. We used to play Poole as well, Mr Kyps a couple of times; that’s our biggest headliner in that area. You can’t really go wrong, everyone in Bournemouth acts like they’re on holiday. You’ve just been on tour, how’s that

story from any tour or the studio you can share? The last thing that happened. It was the biggest intensive tour we’ve ever done, back to back from festivals. That came to a head in Rhayader, Wales the last date of the tour. I think emotions overcame Scott and after the gig finished he picked up his drumkit and [went] to the big fire outside that everyone had been huddling around and chucked his kit [on it] which is mental. It was a good drum kit as well I’m not sure it deserved You say ski season gigs, you’ve got a to be burned, but that’s what he snow video for a track RRRRRollin? wanted to do. The remnants of that We’ve got over 100,000k of hits is now a sculpture in the venue. If on it. I think somebody posted it you want to see what happened somewhere and suddenly we got to the drumkit head over to The tons of hits, it’s our fastest growing lost ARC where there’s a permeant record in terms of views in the space installation. It’s got Imperial Leisure of time. We’re pretty stoked about stickers on it so you can’t miss it. that. Do the guerrilla gigs still happen? Is Imperial Leisure and ski seasons Explain them to people who haven’t a thing? It is now! I found myself heard? We did a few over the in Norway last winter, whilst I was summer. We called them mobile up there I [was offered] to play the gigs to start off with because we World Downhill Championships. were mobile gigging, that’s how we We played a couple of gigs, shot a looked at it but this term guerrilla music video; an amazing experience gigs got associated with it. We they really looked after us up in near ended up identifying with it really Lillehammer in Norway. They put us well. We ended up on the news up in a hotel for a week and we got doing it in Oxford Circus in London the 5 star treatment. In the video and all sorts of weird place; even in you’ll see us having the time of our Paris under the Eiffel Tower, which lives, which is exactly how it was as was pretty cool! Maybe we’ll get to well. It was great to capture that on the pyramids on day, who knows! video as well. We’ve done lots of that this year, some of the guerrilla gigs are bigger in and out of Europe, mainly me as a solo [playing] as Denis of Imperial Leisure. That’s basically me with a backing track doing a more hip-hop version of what we do. We went all over, France, Switzerland, Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. It was really good, we managed to play with Belgium with the full line up a couple of times which was wicked. We hope to do more over the winter, maybe score a few ski season gigs.

than our actual gigs. We always love doing it, even after all these years people seem to appreciate us coming down and jamming on the street. Can you tell me about the first Imperial leisure gig? Wow that’s going to be difficult, it’s a very fuzzy area where Imperial Leisure actually started. That’s why we’re doing the 10 year anniversary because at least we know when we put out our first album. We did play a gig as another band called Chewbacca which was our college party band, basically what Imperial Leisure came out of. We were Star Wars drunken nerds so named ourselves Chewbaca. We had a song about a Wookie being a party monster and stuff like that. We had 5 songs in our repertoire and then did Rage Against The Machine and Red Hot Chilli Peppers covers. We gained quite a lot of popularity through the student circuit and ended up winning the Southern Comfort Battle of the Bands. We ended up winning it with the grand final [being in] Debry University and we won Southern Comfort and a free recording session. That was the last Chewbacca gig, that was 2001. The first Imperial Leisure gig, we recorded this e.p. [with the prize] and launched Imperial Leisure. Your classic first album the art of saying nothing has its 10 years

anniversary this year. What’s so special about the anniversary deluxe reissue? We’re still working on it, nothing much to give away because we have a couple of new tracks we want to put on there, we’ve got some live recordings we’ll put on featuring Young Blood Brass Band. We played a gig at The Thekla, Bristol supporting them, so we did a recording of that gig, that’s going to be on there. We’ve got the got the original tracks, we’re getting James Bragg who worked on our last album Lifestyle Brand to remix and master the original album. Hopefully we can meet the Christmas deadline. What we’ll also be doing is we have a ton of live footage so we’re going to be putting out episodes [on YouTube] of how the years gone basically, takes people through the year and gives people a chance to tell about how the band started. We also recorded our London gig at the O2 Islington. We’re currently editing that together, so we’ll have a full live gig as well which features some of the original members of the band. They came back for that one show, that’s a special thing as well. The record will just be streamed for now. We’ll probably have a vinyl version of it to sell as merchandise. What’s next for Imperial leisure? We’ve already been booked for some festivals next summer, I think

that dictated what we’re going to do. So far, we’ve got 5 offers for next year already. It looks like we’ll be doing a festival tour next summer. We’re going to try and do some more ski season stuff in the early part of 2019. You can also expect at least one more single out of us in the near future. We’ve got a song we recorded at the same time as we recorded RRRRRollin, that’s yet to see the light of day. Can you give me us an exclusive name of any of the festivals? You can have an exclusive on one of the festivals, we’ll be playing the main stage, 2000 Trees, December 2019. I’ve got to say it’s the best alternative music festival, in terms of guitar alternative music. It has an amazing plethora of underground bands and above all it has a great vibe about it. It’s an amazing medium size festival. And an exclusive on the single? The single is called The Albanian Night, it will be dropping in the early part of next year. How can fans keep in touch with Imperial leisure? The easiest way to get hold of us is either Facebook or Instagram. We do all our Social Media stuff. If anyone wants to get in touch with the band through Facebook or Instagram and we all answer messages as quick as we can. We’re always happy to chat.

DEC 4TH | THE BOURNEMOUTH BIC Woke up this morning

Best known for the theme tune to the TV show ‘Sopranos’ this legendary Brixton collective combine techno beats with country instruments to create an acid jazz country style sound that draws influence from rock, electronic, blues, country, gospel, and spoken word styles. Formed at an acid house party in the 90’s and singing to Geffen they have gone on to be a mainstay of the live scene and a big influence on the party people circuit.

7TH DEC | THE OLD FIRE STATION Skanking shoes at the ready

BAD MANNERS

Led by the infamous Buster Bloodvessel, Bad Manners have been whipping audiences into a frenzy since the Ska revival or the 80s with their upbeat and frantic two tone sound. Spending 111 weeks in the charts in the early 80s with hits including “My Girl Lollipop”, “Lip Up Fatty”, “Can Can”, “Special Brew” and “Walking In The Sunshine” Bad manners are still going strong to this day and show no signs of stopping just yet.

7TH DEC | SALISBURY CITY HALL

Original girl power! One of the biggest girl bands of the 1990s, All Saints - Natalie and Nicole Appleton, Melanie Blatt and Shaznay Lewisbecame one of the most symbolic British pop groups of the 1990s with 12 million record sales, five number one singles, two multi-platinum albums and two Brit awards. PREVIEWS SPORADICS / 2 SICK MONKEYS

Penultimate show for underground punks

The Riveria in Boscombe is fast becoming the home of all things punk in the area and December see yet another great line up for lovers of the genre. 2 Sick Monkeys have been powerhouses of the underground circuit for years racking up well over 1000 gigs. Sadly they have decided to call it day and their penultimate ever show will be hosted by local skacore outfit The Sporadics, whose Christmas parties have become somewhat legendary over the last few years

14TH DEC | RIVERIA BOSCOMBE Keys driven Indie Rock n’ Roll

Like so many bands, Sirpico have always been on the verge of being something people would love. However, like so many before it, there was no guarantee of when, or if, the perfect elements would come together. With an eclectic blend of rock, indie, old school r’n’b, and with an ever present modern touch, drawn upon from the four corners of musical mastery. It would seem that time has come over the last couple of years. After headlining Loungefest festival in Guildford and playing at the Bournemouth O2 Academy as well as the Bloomsbury Theatre in London they are ready to take the next step.

SIRPICO

15TH DEC | THE MADDING CROWD EAST 17 90’s boy band stay another day at Canvas

19TH DEC | CANVAS DAVE MCPHERSON

Founded in 1992 East 17 notched up eighteen Top 20 singles and four Top 10 albums during their early to mid 1990s run at the top. In contrast to the wholesome boy band image, East 17 were seen as a grittier and more ‘real’, blending rap and pop in songs such as ‘House of Love’ and ‘Steam’, and also tackled political issues with tracks like ‘Let It Rain’. Joined by new lead vocalist Robbie Craig of Artful Dodger fame, the trio is rounded out by long term members John Hendy and Terry Coldwell.

Solo set from INME frontman

Dave started working on solo material as early as 2004 during down-time from InMe’s touring cycle. He has released a long string of independent EP’s, all hand made and self released, and has toured extensively playing close to 200 shows annually. His debut album The Hardship Diaries was released in 2011. His style as a solo artist is far removed from his role in InMe in that the songs are primarily folky but still feature rich programmed orchestration.

21ST DEC | ANVIL ROCK BAR Punk influenced Bluegrass mayhem

SNAKESNAKESNAKE

Snakesnakesnake are a musical Burrow hill-billy four piece from Somerset featuring guitar, banjo, double bass, fiddle, melodica and cello. Formed after the members decided that perhaps they were ‘too old’ to play punk anymore they turned their attention to the next logical musical step for white trash: country. Having long been fans of Johnny Cash, they began playing some of his songs along with other country and bluegrass numbers before beginning to work on their own fierce bluegrass compositions.

“This is rowdy, heartfelt, room shaking and spirit stirring music that only the dead can’t enjoy.” ltdstate.com

Mad Dog Mcrea return to shake the Corn Exchange with their unique mixture of folk rock, pop, gypsy jazz, bluegrass and ‘shake your ass’ music. Please Note: This event is standing only

Friday 7 December, 8pm

There is something to be said for the spirit of something to not actually reside in anything physical, but in fact be a collective sum of it’s parts. The Winchester stood atop Poole Hill in Bournemouth, a venue which championed the underground dance scene and was a bastion of all emerging arts. Birthed from that within community was On The Bus Festival, which took the same ethos into a field near corfe castle, running for for 7 years.

and The Bomo Bunker, it creates an expansive space to explore, with different types of music on every floor.

The basement will be reviving the spirit of The Winchester, with the room being curated by Mark Berry, former ownder of the now legendary nighclub. Expect some Aiming to better last years success, which saw queues down the road and a full house all night, they’re teaming up again for another house and techno amongst 3 FLOOR party. Making use of two adjoining venues, Buffalo Bar other sounds that defined The Winch. The ground floor will be curated by On The Bus Festival and will feature live music from Bomo Swing who fuse together Balkan, Reggae, Gypsy and Latin music. Keeping in the OTB spirit of mixing it up, the floor will also have a bit of Rock & Indie and a very healthy dose of Drum and Bass and Jungle. The third floor will open into yet another little pocket of sound. With an even wider mix of music with swing, funk and electro sitting up alongside hip-hop and roots.

and impressive rhythms. Track EP Review “Somewhere Somehow” by Monster Logic. two “12” runs at a much slower Five-piece Bournemouth band Monster Logic have recently released their 4 track debut EP “Somewhere Somehow”. The band formed earlier this year and already have quite a few live appearances under their belts with impressive gigs at local venues Madding Crowd, Chaplin’s, Heartbreakers and the Anvil. The EP was put together with the help of local music stalwart Russ Gannicott at the Lighthouse in Christchurch. It was recorded using some fairly traditional recording methods with the whole thing put together without a click track on analogue and the tracks were mixed through the desk. The band claim they didn’t even touch a computer until the final upload. It was all recorded and mixed within a week. The EP’s unusual artwork came from a simple doodle on a whiteboard done by a friend of the band, while waiting for the guitarist to finish his tracks. The band themselves come from a variety of backgrounds and all bring different influences into their music. Their sound brings together more contemporary styles coupled with classic and indie/ rock inspirations.

smoldering pace and features lyrics that are somewhat of a conundrum “I’m not trying my hardest, but I am trying my best”, keeping listeners guessing what is at the depth of the meaning. The tune features a understated guitar solo that feels as though the guitarist is somewhat holding back and wants to give much more. “Selfish” is a really beautiful but painful tune that starts with some gently plucked acoustic guitars, with Alex’s vocals helping you feel the pain that is being portrayed by the suffering of a relationship. There is some fuzzed-up electric guitars featured along with some nice harmonization and some perfectly matched percussion. “Selfish” is certainly the band’s finest creation on this debut collection. The final track ‘Silence of the Mind’ is once again a nice mix of electric and acoustic guitars delivering the goods on a much gentler level than before.

Monster Logic are certainly a more than welcome addition to the local music scene and with this debut release, show plenty of youthful talent that can only further blossom as they gain more experience.

The opening number “Talk You Down” introduces Alex’s unique www.facebook.com/ monsterlogicband and well-delivered vocals, coupled with twin electric guitars
