Prepare for the start of the winter gig season Dorset this month, as always, is packed with more awesome gigs than you could fit in if you wanted too! This issue we take a look at upcoming folk-punk troupe ‘Imprints’ as they set off on their first UK tour, which includes a stop at Chaplins in Boscombe.

For the new to folk-punk I point you in the direction of Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues and Flogging Molly as the most well-known examples; Imprints follow in their footsteps with a mash up of guitars played by ‘Urban Steed’ and violins played by ‘Ginge’ amongst their instrumentation. Imprints describe themselves as ‘cider fuelled explosion’ writing songs covering topics such as ‘space pirates’, ‘undead partying’ and ‘waking up drunk and doing it again’. Imprints make a strong claim which I will agree with and make a bet with the readers of Dorset Music, they claim they ‘will guarantee foot-stomping fun and the mightiest and fieriest of jigs’. I guarantee this will be a night to remember with the whole room bouncing but if you find only one man dancing one 17th of November in the Cellar Bar that will be me, Dorset Music’s very own James Wadsworth who you can come up to get me to buy you a pint because I am certain I won’t be the only
one dancing (T & C’s apply, I’m a poorly paid music writer, only tap water is available on this offer). Ok, so now what’s next, time to listen to them and get yourself in the mood; on the 2nd of November Imprints release their debut album ‘Flagship’ a continuation of their ‘fieriest jigs’ crafting their sound since the humble beginnings of being a 2-piece human jukebox busking machine back in 2012. With 6 years, 1 album, 1 EP, 2 singles and the band claim 23,486 pints of cider behind them this album tour proves to be the record laying claim to their patch on the folk-punk scene. Flagship and their back catalogue are all available on streaming sites (learn the words, I’m sure you’ll want to sing along but they’ll help on the night if you need) and when you’re at the cellar bar you will be able to purchase a physical copy and other mech. That summer a kid called Mikey had a party at his house and everyone from school was there, we had decks and a mic set up, me and this other kiddie just started hosting the sets, dropping a few bars and from then on I was known around the way as the MC.

Bless for having me bruv, well I was into stuff like Nirvana and Pantera when I was much younger, and I remember hearing a DJ SS tape
Ha-ha well after listening to some very old sets from back in the day I’d say I still had a long way to go back then, but big up for the props! I was lucky to be involved in most nights around where I grew up just outside London and there weren’t really many people MCing back then so it was easier for me to get where I wanted to be. I also used to do a weekly internet radio show on a station called UK Rumble which gave me a good chance to network through the scene.

used to be common place back when I started, especially at Cocoshebeen at the Opera House (now the O2 Academy). I miss those people ha-ha. The scene continues to grow and grow, the younger generations aren’t as loud as they used to be, I remember back when everyone had a whistle or a horn, now days everyone’s got a Wow yeah too many good times to single any one smart phone to hand, that makes me sound old thing out. I prefer MCing to small crowds in rooms lol, it was better in my day boy, but no its just with low ceilings though, such a better vibe from progression. The fundamentals are still solid and my experience. I remember you did a tune with Funtcase under his DJ Dose alias, and I recently found on an old hard drive that “Wah Blow” tune we started too long ago to remember now but who else have you collaborated with over the years and what music have you released? Ha-ha, Wah Blow, jeez that takes me back. Yeah done a few bits with funty (Funtcase), and a couple of other smaller projects but I’ve always been more of a live performance person than a studio head. You’ve been on the scene for a long minute now, what are the main big changes you have noticed,positive and negative? I was just talking the other day about how I don’t get people MCing to me in the toilets any more, that

New Zealand four-piece The Beths channel their longtime friendship into high-energy guitar pop with a smart lyrical bite. Guitarist, lead vocalist, and primary songwriter Elizabeth Stokes and guitarist Jonathan Pearce attended high school together before meeting up with longtime mates bassist Benjamin Sinclair and drummer Ivan Luketina-Johnston at the University of Auckland, where all four studied jazz. Arrested Development was formed in 1988 by rapper and producer Todd Thomas. The group went on the win two Grammy Awards in 1993 for Best New Artist and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group and were also named Band of the Year by Rolling Stone Magazine. The debut album sold over 6 million copies worldwide and greatly influenced acts such as The Black Eyed Pees and The Fugees. THE SWAMP STOMP STRING BAND
The Swamp Stomp String Band are not your average Americana band. Twangy Banjos, driving Guitars and a thudding Double Bass sit behind anything from drinking songs that’ll have the room stomping their feet and shooting tequila to ballads that’ll break even the toughest folk, to ragtime songs of bar fights and gambling. The London based duo can often be found busking by the side of Thames in the day and performing in any haunt from high end cocktails joints to dimly lit dive bars at night.

THE WEDDING PRESENT
In the late 1980s The Wedding Present were one of the most famous British indie bands. Their career path often involved unusual decisions, such as recording a set of Ukranian folk songs for their first major-label offering and releasing a single on the first Monday of every month for a year. Band members came and went, but the idea of The Wedding Present as a group has remained.

MISCHA & HIS MERRY MEN Green by name and green by nature, Mischa is on a mission to save the earth with just the six strings on his guitar; some uplifting songs and his Merry Men. He has been a long serving member of the local music community for as long as many can remember and his infectious positivity is always welcome at any music venue or festival. His band is a revolving door of musicians that drop in and drop out of the band at various occasions, so each gig is never the same. To mark one particular moment in time a five track EP has been released entitled ‘Save Our Souls’ This was put together at the basement studios in Wimborne that have previously delivered many great recordings in the past. The tunes are loads of fun, colourful and uplifting with a serious message behind every song. Mischa is as honest as the day is long and wears his big green heart on his sleeve and if he were a politician I would vote for him for sure. I’m not sure if he would be able to take his guitar into Parliament and deliver his message, but if he could I’m sure people would listen.
The EP starts with the spiritual ‘Save Our Souls’ which bounces along with its infectious brass and piano and Mischa’s vocals stand loud and proud over the top. ‘Give Green a Chance’ pleads for people to be more careful with our collective homes, the tune has a ‘Chas & Dave’ style bounce to it which delivers the message home perfectly. ‘What Will Be’ turns things around with a slightly slower beat with some amazing ivory work from the very talented Steve Russell. With track 4 ‘Give it All’ things get a bit progressive starting with some lovely instrumental acoustic guitar work; combined with more dreamy piano, along with some atmospheric cello before Mischa’s familiar vocals and the brass join the party. ‘Live for Now’ concludes with some lovely haunting Saxophone intro’s before the electric and acoustic guitars take over with some irresistible melodic goodness.
