BEZ FREAKY DANCING Mark ‘Bez’ Berry. Quite simply mad for it, Bez made his mark as the madcap dancer with the Happy Mondays. Dragged into the band at their first show when frontman and friend Shaun Ryder was afraid to go on stage alone, he became an icon for a generation. On the 23rd February he will be coming to Mr Kyps in Poole to talk candidly about his career and answer your burning questions. We caught up with Bez ahead of his tour to ask some questions of our own.
What do you think are the unique combination of things that need to come together to create a scene such as the 90’s boom in Manchester. Do you think that a similar thing could happen in todays world and how essential was having a space like The Haçienda to foster that community.
You do need magical ingredients to create such a scene, luck and timing, but I do believe that such a scene can come along again because youth culture is always growing. As a kid we used to dream of being in the 60s and then the Hacienda and ecstasy explosion came along and from it we managed to make a scene of our own, which still goes on today. If it wasn’t for Tony Wilson, New Order and Alan Erasmus funding the Hacienda for years, at
a loss, and Factory Records there wouldn’t have been such a scene to come out of Manchester. The Hacienda was essential to the time. You’ve been lucky enough to perform at some of the worlds largest venues with both Happy Mondays and Black Grape. Do you have any pre-stage routines to help you prepare for a big gig? Yes, I stretch and warm up by doing some gentle dancing to some good music beforehand surrounded by good people and friends backstage. In 2015 it was reported that you’d produced your first batch of honey. What drew you to beekeeping? What should people be doing to help the under threat bee population and how is the the honey business going in 2018?
The reason I love honey so much stems from childhood. When my grandad returned from the war he brought back 3 tins of honey with him and ever since then
it has been part of our family tradition to have honey in our tea and morning cereals. That’s what drove me to become a beekeeper and now I’m an all out honey monster. I have honey in everything. I encourage everyone to plant bee friendly flowers and to stop using pesticides as that is what is killing the bees off. If able to I also encourage people to keep bees, they are not as difficult to keep as people think. The honeys always going, I have loads of honey... It’s become a lot harder for live bands to build up an audience and to make music into a career path. What advice would you give to a budding musician who is struggling to make a living from their art?
You’ve just got to keep going and always remember you’re doing it for the enjoyment and pleasure for yourself. It is difficult to become a professional musician these days, but don’t give up. We were really lucky as we entered the record industry as it was, before the digital age took over. You are doing a tour soon, which will take in the Dorset venue Mr Kyps. This tour is an opportunity for you to talk about your career and for people to ask your their burning questions. Are you looking forward to telling your story and why should people come along?
Yes I’m really looking forward to it. I’m a bit nervous but my stories always seem to go down well and you may be lucky to hear some stories people may have not heard before. I really enjoy telling stories and if anyone’s a fan of the Mondays I can answer your questions straight up from the horses mouth.

DJ ANDY SMITH
Andy Smith was the first DJ to release a multi-genre mix album on a major label. His seminal mix-CD The Document hit the streets back in 1998 and became the soundtrack for a generation who’d heard Coldcut’s Journeys By DJs but needed to hear more – The Document filled the void. It segued tracks from artists such as Tom Jones; Peggy Lee (sample source for Beastie Boys single Ch-Check It Out); The Jungle Brothers and even The Spencer Davis Group. This was new to music lovers but for Smith a mixed bag of treasures has always been at the centre of his sets.
This appreciation of different genres made Smith the ideal person to provide samples for Portishead’s first two albums. He went on to make his name as their international tour DJ – reflecting their respect for both digging and hip-hop scratch DJ-ing. Hip-hop elements formed the basis of Portishead’s unique sound. Since the Portishead tours he has established himself as an underground producer, working with Scott Hendy (Boca 45) under the name Dynamo Productions and providing samples for The Prodigy.
Selby and the Dharma Blitz is an alternative, hip hop, funk project that merges arresting lyricism with a unique musical direction. Providing a fusion of folkloric storytelling with infectious groove. Since forming in early 2015 the group have hit the UK festival circuit with their eight piece barrage of Brass and rap poetry, supporting some of the biggest names on the alternative scene
Nile Rodgers is a fan. Kid Creole is a fan. Disclosure, Jazzy Jeff, and Joris Voorn are all fans. Fascinated by the remix from an early age, London-based French native Nicolas Laugier, aka The Reflex, takes his cue from the first wave of disco remixers by using only the original sounds from the master tapes (or stems) to breathe new life into soul, pop and disco classics. Very few editors out there put as much time and detail into their work as The Reflex and the results speak for themselves: heavily championed by BBC6 Music’s Craig Charles, The Reflex Revisions have amassed over 50 weeks of radio play in just two years on this number one rated show.

by Harry D-Tox This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section we have the pleasure of talking to international DJ, producer, unofficial George Michael lookalike and long standing Bournemouth promoter, Harry Frampton aka Judda or Harry Judda, depending on your musical preference. He’s an artist who has always had his finger on the pulse (and I don’t mean the classic Bad Company release on Grooveriders high profile Prototype Recordings) whether it be pushing ground-breaking DB, Dubstep or more recently House and Techno, Judda has always put the work in, done it right and got strong support and recognition from artists and raver alike. This is one artist who is definitely NOT a one trick pony. First things first, nuff respect for taking the time out to do this interview! Big up your bad self. Let’s start at the beginning with your earliest musical influences. What did your parents listen to and what did you listen to growing up? My mum dad are into all sorts, they were punks back in the day so I was subjected to a lot of that when growing up, along with Reggae and Alternative. It probably shaped my own approach to music in a way. Personally I got straight into dance music at an early age, I was into jungle at 10 years old and other rave music as I called it, previous to that. I never really listened to Pop Music. I guess the closest to that back then would have been The Prodigy.

events come about, what artists did you bring down to them and how long did the events run for? After The Venue’s closure in 2003, I wanted to keep DJing out. So I decided to create something of my own to play at, doing a midweek thing to avoid the bigger DB nights in town at the weekends. I used to do them at a club called Slam, it was a great basement club for DB in the middle of town. I remember bringing Brockie Skibadee down, Fatman D, Foxy, DJ Fluid and Nicky Blackmarket. I wish I still had the flyers myself to tell you more.
When did you first start DJing and can you remember the first club you played at? I had my first set of belt driven decks when I was 12. They used to be on my bedroom floor, not exactly ideal. I started hanging about in record shops buying a lot of DB, House, Garage and even some Trance back then. I’d record my own radio shows, mixing it all up (probably badly). I started playing peoples parties, and then when I hit 18 I was involved in a night called Mono which was at Bar Tonka in Bournemouth (which later became The Winchester). Soon after I was a resident at The Venue in Poole. Getting to play alongside idols Fabio Grooverider amongst others.
When we first started playing out, the two main DB events in town were Destiny and Cocoshebeen, which had a bit of rivalry. You used to put posters out for Destiny and I remember hearing that the promoter of Cocoshebeen had tried to drag you into the back of a transit for supposedly taking down his posters… Is this true? Well not quite, but I was threatened to have my hands cut off, cheers Matt :) Destiny wanted to take the story to The Echo newspaper but it never happened. This was pre Facebook days so postering was very important to night clubs promotion. Not like today where you can sit in your underpants at a computer and share your events on social media. You actually had to get out there. It would definitely filter out a lot of today’s promoters if it was still like that.
I was looking through an old bag of flyers that I had in storage from way back when and found a flyer for the event “Filth”, which you ran with Tony Morrison. You organised this night long before you started Drumfunk or even the Dex Factor nights, where the local scene was first introduced to Whitey. How did the Filth
I know you did a basic Cubase course back in 2004 because that is where we first properly met, but I was wondering if you have done any other music courses since then and if you still use Cubase to write music? I actually write in Logic at moment. I learnt a lot of production techniques through sitting in with other people, I think thats the best way to
learn. Working with Ulterior Motive helped me a lot. Id actually been considering finding another course to expand my knowledge. Production is something Id like to refocus on again this year. In 2006 you launched Drumfunk at the Consortium in Bournemouth Square, which has long been closed and made into some poncey wine bar or something. I remember getting down there shortly after the doors had opened and before the crowds had turned up, to find you, like any promoter on their launch night, worrying about people not turning up and if the event would be a success or not. Needless to say, the event was a massive success and went from strength to strength, with you not long after being the first person to bring Hospital Records to Bournemouth. What has been the most memorable night since then and what made you later join forces with Enter? I still stand around at the start of the night worrying if anyones going to come in! But yeah Im very glad to have managed to keep Drumfunk going for so long with many a great memory to go along with it. One of my favs was the first time I had High Contrast in Bournemouth. That was over 10 years ago now but the vibe was incredible and Id never seen the Consortium so busy! To be honest there is too many to mention, which can only be a good thing. Whitey, the head honcho of Enter, was a resident for me at Drumfunk at the time when he decided to start working on some of his own nights. We worked the calendar around each other to avoid any date clashes. But eventually decided to join forces when we were doing pretty similar stuff and took our event to The Old Fire Station.

The music seems to have gone back to its roots here with parties starting to pop up again. So Im quite intrigued to see how it develops. And yeah it was great to be asked to play a set under the Audio Sleaze alias, Id definitely be open to offers to do more. May well get back in the studio to do some fresh material

The first time I went to Outlook Festival in 2010, I was camped next to a load of lads from Edinburgh and they were looking through the programme planning what acts to go see when they mentioned your name as one of the acts they wanted to see, and I was all like what Judda? I know him from Bournemouth! (Haha claim to fame). This is one of the first times I remember thinking that you were making moves as a producer outside our local scene and getting proper recognition. What labels were you releasing on back then and what DB labels have you released on since? Thats always nice to know. For the record that was a great gig at Outlook Festival. Probably the sweatiest gig Ive ever played also! Id had releases on Critical, Subtitles and CIA amongst some others around that time, working with the Bournemouth locals Ulterior Motive Krakota, who have both blown up in recent times. I havent made any DnB for a couple of years at least but its something I plan on changing this year. Im always being asked when Im going to produce it again so I think its time to reappear. You also had a strong following in the Dubstep scene under the alias Audio Sleaze, which was you and Matt Deep. You recently did a “one off” reunion
So House and Techno… You seem to have made some really big moves in that scene over the last few years, with regular air play on BBC Radio 1, Rinse FM (also doing a guest mix) and your tunes getting featured on the Red Bull Mixtape Series, Ibiza compilations and My Nu Lengs FabricLive CD. How did this all start and how does the House and Techno scene compare to the DandB scene? Yeah things moved along very quickly when I started doing the house techno stuff. Id brought my DnB dubstep influence over to it which made me stand out I think. And the quick success from that made me inspired to keep going with it. Id got the excitement back in writing and playing music. I wouldnt like to compare the two styles of music. Theyre both good in different ways. There is a lot more energy at a DB rave though thats for sure but only natural at the higher tempo I guess. Im actually planning on recording a DB mix early this year, which will be the first time Ive played it in over 5 years! Lastly, what forthcoming music can we look out for and what gigs have you got lined up over the next few months? I have a 5 track EP on the house techno tip dropping within the next few months. I also have plans to do a monthly mix podcast. My main priority this year is to write as much new material as possible. Lots of my studio time was compromised last year due to moving house a couple of times. Gigs wise, Ill be doing my residencies in Bournemouth for “We Are Your Friends” amongst others. Hoping I can add some festivals for the summer along the way.

The Damned are a band who need no real introduction to fans of punk/goth music. Formed in 1976, The Damned were the first British punk band to commercially release both a single and an album, as well as take their music Stateside, with their first US voyage taking place in 1977. Along with the Sex Pistols and the Clash, The Damned helped to spearhead the punk movement in the United Kingdom, fusing the fast aggressive style of their contemporaries with a darker gothic edge. They went on to break up and reform a few times racking up 9 UK top 40 singles and 10 studio albums along the way. Selling millions of albums over four decades the goth punk pioneers have inspired a whole movement and countless bands with hits such as ‘Neat Neat Neat’, ‘Love Song’, ‘Smash It Up’ and ‘New Rose’ – recently voted the ‘Best Punk Song Ever’ by Kerrang! Magazine.
Hot off the success of their 40th Anniversary tour in the US and an epic appearance at British Summer Time Festival in Hyde Park on Saturday last July the band announced not only a new album in 2018, their first since 2008, but a huge 16 date UK tour including a show at Dorset Music’s local O2 in Bournemouth. Fans will get to experience the raw, primal and macabre energy produced by members Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Monty Oxymoron, Pinch and Stu West across some big and some intimate settings and hopefully a sneak preview of the new album itself.
