Thanks for picking up the June 2014 issue of Devon Music Magazine and the second of our annual festival specials, this month we head to Dartmoor for a look at this year’s Chagstock Festival. We speak to harmonic duo Winter Mountain ahead of their Chagstock appearance and catch up with sibling pop-folksters Hudson Taylor who are due to play Goldcoast this year. Also this month we get up close and personal with legendary electronic music pioneer Gary Numan and we get to ask The Moulettes some silly questions.

Chagstock is fast becoming one of the west country’s best-loved festivals. Set in 70 acres of farmland on the edge of Dartmoor, it’s renowned for its stunning location, diverse line-up of artists and noncorporate, family friendly atmosphere. The team at Chagstock aim to showcase for you the very best in music, food and entertainment that the west country and the UK have to offer and it seems that they’re onto a bit of a winning formula, as the 5,000 capacity festival has sold out for the past two years in a row! Early bird tickets have sold out in record time, so you’d best get a wriggle on if you want to be in with the crowd for 2014. This year’s fancy dress theme is ‘The Wild West!’ so pull on your cowboy boots, break out your line dancing and don’t forget to pack your Indian headdress! This year’s festival is jam-packed with the best in local and national musical talent. Lightning Seeds headline the main stage on Friday night and million-selling alt-rock legends The Waterboys top the bill on Saturday. Liverpudlian brit-pop legends Lightning Seeds are fronted and formed by Ian Broudie. With twelve top 20 UK hits and seven studio albums to date you’re guaranteed hit after hit and with Chagstock taking place just five days after the World Cup Final, should the unthinkable happen and the England team go all the way, the rendition of their ubiquitous football anthem Three Lions will be something to remember for a very long time! Formed 30 years ago by Mike Scott, The Waterboys became famous for their powerful live performances and majestic albums such as A Pagan
Place and This Is The Sea, which included their biggest hit The Whole Of The Moon. Since the band released their million-selling Fisherman’s Blues album, on which Scott’s original and unusual songwriting was blended with country, trad, blues and gospel to electrifying effect, The Waterboys have continued to make critically acclaimed, genre-busting records and have matured into one of the world’s finest live acts. Topsham-born Show of Hands frontman, Steve Knightley has also been announced to perform a solo gig as part of his ‘grow your own gig’ tour. With the legendary 2-Tone band, alt-folksters The Moulettes, 8-piece Bristolian ska collective Babyhead and award winning Canadian band The Stanfields also hitting the main stage, try and save a little time to also catch the wonderfully chaotic high-energy Balkan folksters Sheelanagig who headline the marquee stage on Friday night. They are joined on the bill by hotly-tipped English blues-rockers Sam Green & the Midnight Heist, Bridie Jackson & the Arbour, folk duo Winter Mountain (more from them over the page!) and local Okehampton rockers, Downfall. Chagstock’s house band, New Crisis, also perform their traditional main stage slot. We caught up with festival organiser Simon Ford recently to find out how Chagstock got to where it is today and just how excited he is for this year’s festival….. “I am delighted that Chagstock has now sold out two years in a row! With the announcement of Lightning Seeds, alongside acts such as The Waterboys, The Selecter and many others, the whole team is confident that 2014 will be our best year yet and we will sell out once again! As always we are sticking to the non-corporate vibe and family friendly atmosphere with loads of great and varied music, food and entertainment”
Chagstock started as a private event for your mates. What made you first think ‘we should make this festival public’? It was such fun, and the atmosphere we created was so good that I wanted to create something similar on a bigger scale so that more people could enjoy it.
Has there ever been a time when you’ve considered packing it all
You’ve been on the current site since 2007, what’s so special about Whiddon Down? The first time I looked at the site I knew it was perfect. The views are stunning and the access is perfect.
For festival-goers that have never been to Chagstock before, what can they expect? A great big party in a field for all ages. Great music, food, drink and lots of kids entertainment.
How do you go about choosing the artists for Chagstock? The main parameters are to have well known headliners and then a mix of genres of music made up predominantly from the huge pool of talent in the South West. We also try to fit the odd international artist into the mix. Who are you most excited about seeing this year, and who should we be checking out? All of them! It’s impossible to choose….

in? There were times when financially we were very close to the edge but we all persevered and came through with a strong belief that we were doing the right thing.
Are there any golden rules? Enjoy yourself and let others enjoy themselves around you! And exactly how much do you love your job? What would you be doing if it wasn’t Chagstock? It’s the best thing I have ever done. If it wasn’t for Chagstock, I would probably be wearing a suit and working in an office.... WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

FEATURE Hailing from the shores of Cornwall and Donegal, Winter Mountain blend melodic folk songs, heartfelt lyrics and two voices in a sound reminiscent of a time before digital recording when the emphasis fell on the importance of live performance, the power of harmony and the essence of the song. The duo share song-writing duties, their individual styles, like their voices juxtaposing yet beautifully complimenting the other. As well as performances at some of the UK and Irelands most prestigious venues and festivals, they were chosen by Rosanne Cash to open for her and husband John Leventhal when they toured the UK in 2012. While opening for some of Cara Dillons’ bigger shows they outsold her on the merchandise stand and, unbelievably, whilst opening for Sara Watkins (Nickle Creek, The Decemberists) they won over audiences so much that they were often given an encore, before the main act had even taken to the stage. Autumn 2013 also saw them open for Seth Lakeman on his UK tour and now they’re set to take the festival scene by storm. We seized our chance to chat to the lovely Joseph Francis ahead of their appearance at Chagstock…. So you met each other on a train in the US, how exactly did that happen!?! I had flown into New York and I was playing around the bars and clubs of Greenwich village. After a few weeks I decided to head west to try my luck in Chicago. In the meantime Marty had flown into San Francisco and was making his way east by train. We both happened to step on the same train at Union Station, Chicago headed southbound from Memphis. Pretty wild And how lucky that your voices blend so well. That’s incredibly important to the style of music you produce…. Some people have suggested that we are brothers who were separated at birth! It’s peculiar and it’s great. We don’t analyse it too much, we don’t want to jinx it, but we’re pretty sure it’s a Celtic thing. What made you first start making music? I was surrounded by music growing up, my mum and dad both played great music. I heard pop heavyweights like The Police and Talking Heads through my mum and folky singer songwriters like Neil Young and Bob Dylan from my dad. It wasn’t until after I first heard the Beatles singing ‘Nowhere Man’ that I picked up and played an instrument. It was three minutes of pure pop genius that changed my life completely at ten years old. You’ve recently provided vocals for Cara Dillon’s new album, what was that like? Man, that was humbling. Cara is world-class, truly one of the greats. We’re sharing backing vocal duties with John Smith, Aoife O’Donavon and Timothy B Schmidt of the Eagles – working with the singers and a producer (Cara’s Husband, Sam Lakeman) of that calibre means that you have to raise your game and it’s so rewarding, dream come true kind of stuff. Any plans to get back in the studio yourselves at some point? We’re hoping to get back in the studio in Autumn, we’re writing

new material all the time so it’ll be great to get some of new tracks recorded. Our tours recently have really helped us develop our singing and writing so it will be great to see what direction we take a new record in. You’re playing a heap of festivals this summer. Do you think your sound lends itself to the laid back, outdoors vibe? Absolutely, we adore playing them. It’s almost the purest musical experience you can have these days and it’s trial by fire for touring bands because you can’t control the circumstances. A great challenge. You get to see so many amazing bands, there’s a great sense of community. I would never say that we were ‘easy listening’ but we’re a great band to chill out too. It’s gonna be a great summer. Joseph, you’re from St Agnes originally. Have you ever been to Chagstock before? I haven’t I’m afraid, but I’m really looking forward to it. It’s one of the best-known festivals in the south west. Its reputation precedes it. What are you most looking forward to about festival season? Festivals are the perfect remedy for the long winters we get in the UK and Ireland. At the same time it’s a celebration, it’s a privilege to play and it’s so unifying to be in an audience where everyone is going mad for a cool band. I’m especially looking forward to the opportunity to see and friends perform and to check out some new bands. Which incidentally, is the perfect remedy to the X Factor... Any top tips for surviving a festival filled summer? Gum boots, plastic macs and plenty of cider, then you just go with the flow!

Did you know that music festivals are believed to go all the way back to ancient Greece in the 10th century BC? Ethereal deities, rather than rock gods, were honoured though times haven’t changed so much with the recent emphasis placed on looking your absolute best (weather permitting!) in the field. Dry shampoo has been around since the 70’s but last year Asda reported sales were up a whopping 37% as we all struggle to keep our barnets fresh for five days without a shower!
The 11th International Sea Shanty Festival is a FREE festival of maritime music featuring Fishermen’s Friends, among others which takes place from 13 - 15 June on the quays and in the bars of the South Cornish port town of Falmouth. The Eden Sessions begin again on 21 June and run on various dates until 15 July. Multiple evenings of popular music in the beautiful surroundings of the Eden Project entry into the Eden Project itself is included in the ticket price. Catch Dizzee Rascal, Elbow and more to be announced. The 16th annual Teignmouth Folk Festival invades various venues across town 20-22 June with a weekend ticket + camping only setting you back £60. Also that weekend, Goldcoast Oceanfest lights up Croyde with all things surf and music. This midsummer weekend is all about good times, great music, keeping fit and looking after the environment. Barn on the Farm brings all things lovely to Gloucester 4 – 6 July with loads of great new artists in an intimate farm setting. Glas-Denbury takes place on 11/12 July at Fairfield Farm, just outside of Newton Abbot. With 5 stages of music there’s bound to be something for everyone! Love extreme sports? Love music? Then NASS is the festival for you. Taking place 11 - 13 July at Bath & West Showground it’s three days of raw action sports, music and party-hard living. The friendliest folk festival in England, Priddy is held in the Mendip Hills, Somerset 11 – 13 July. Also that weekend, Tiverton Balloon Festival combines food, music, comedy and of course……hot air balloons for less than £15. Can’t argue with that! Chagstock welcomes The Waterboys and The Lightning Seeds to their Wild West themed party 18 – 19 July. Held at Whiddon Down, with beautiful views over Dartmoor this homegrown festival has a relaxed vibe. Castle Hill, Barnstaple sees the first Somersault Festival grace its land from 17 – 21 July. Boasting Jack Johnson’s only UK festival appearance, other top acts and excursions it’s five days of pure summer. Musico Festival, a new family festival for Arts and Music takes place 18 – 20 July at Westpoint Arena, Clyst St Mary, near Exeter. Quest Festival arrives for more natural health and healing fun 24 – 27 July at Newton Abbot Racecourse. There are workshops, trade stands, children’s activities and lunchtime and evening music performances.

There is an endearing simplicity to Hudson Taylor that underpins almost everything they do. Why did these two Irish brothers begin playing music together? Well, because their father told them to. Why did they start busking? Because their mother had lost her job and they wanted to make some money. And how do they write their deceptively straightforward folk-pop songs? Well, there isn’t an easy answer to everything. There is a refreshing lack of conceit to Harry and Alfie – Hudson Taylor is their surname– that’s at the heart of their music. Theirs is a breezy easy-come-easy-go approach, perfect for the forthcoming festival season. Growing up in Dublin, they were brought up in a house that was rarely silent. Their dad, a trumpet and keyboard player in a ‘60s brass band, would feed them a cocktail of classics and jazz standards. Harry began playing the trumpet aged 3 and had moved onto the piano by the time he was 6. Alfie, meanwhile, was an Irish champion dancer as a child. But their story really started on a caravan park not far outside Venice. “We played a White Stripes song, a Beach Boys song, Wonderwall, stuff like that,” says Alfie. “We got drunk for the first time, stayed up really late and people really enjoyed it. That was our first musical bond.” When So, you’ve got a pretty busy summer ahead! How does it feel to be in such high demand? Harry: Ha it’s great! Yeah we’ve got a mad summer ahead of us. I can’t wait, it’s going to be a blast though. Alfie: Yeah, we’re really looking forward to it - it’s basically a summer full of festivals and then our album is out in September, so exciting times! Do you actually enjoy going to festivals? Alfie: yeah we love them, it’s the energy - it’s just that whole summer festival feeling, you can’t beat it. We’ll have the lads [in the band] with us too and we’re all really good mates so it’s just like a constant road trip where you’re playing music and having a laugh. Has there been a particular moment where you’ve thought ‘this is it, this is actually going to happen’? A moment where everything suddenly changed…. Harry: I don’t think for me there was a particular moment per se because everything we’ve done over the last few years has been about getting to the point where we’re ready to release our album. We’ve done 4 EPs, been on tour and played festivals and worked with some amazing people so it’s all led to this point where our album is actually ready to go, and that feels really, really exciting. Alfie: Yeah I’d say probably now feels like the most excited we’ve been so far, the album is there, it’ll be released in September and people will be able to hear it and get a sense of the journey we’ve been on over the last few years I hope. Do you two ever argue? Alfie: No not really at all, the odd time we’d disagree about something but nothing major. What’s the worst thing one of you did to the other as a child? Alfie: Oh God we were brutal to each other when we were little, just ask our mum! Not sure what the worst thing we ever did to each other was but whatever either of us did we always both got the blame. I think because we’re so close in age and we went everywhere together our parents just figured no matter which one might have started something it was likely we were both involved so we’d both get punished regardless! Harry: Ha! True! I think it’s probably taught us to always have each other’s backs though in a weird way!

they got back to Dublin they set up a YouTube account and began uploading videos of their covers. Busking seemed a good option; they already had the songs and just needed to take them out of the house. Soon enough, and via a sign they erected whilst playing one of their busking sessions, more and more people were viewing their YouTube channel. All the while, they’d begun writing their own songs too. “We’d done a song that was just us, stripped-down with no drums. There was something about it,” explains Alfie. “Even though we sometimes have drums now, that song is where our sound came from. It was just honest.” Their debut Battles EP, released in August 2012, made an impact in Hudson Taylor’s quietly compelling way, going to number 1 on iTunes Ireland and no.14 in iTunes UK purely as a result of word-of-mouth. They play their acoustic guitars with a buzzing vibrancy, their songs all static strums and lovelorn vocals driven with the sort of desperate, hopeful energy that only young men whose dreams are coming to life possess. Their lyrical themes go from the “typical lad stuff – girlfriends and ex-girlfriends” to the struggle of moving to London last year. “We want to be known as a live band,” says Harry. “We plan on touring constantly… forever.” For the brothers who haven’t known anything else for the past five years, sitting still is not an option. A brave new world awaits and it all kicks off this festival season atGoldcoast. What’s the best thing about making music with your brother? Alfie: I think we’ve developed a strong understanding and respect for each other’s strengths as musicians and neither of us would ever deny the other one their input or ideas creatively, I’m not sure if that’s just because we’re brothers but I suppose that helps! Harry: Yeah and I think working with your family is actually great because you don’t have to have any airs and graces in front of each other or worry that you’ll offend the other one because they know exactly who you are. It’s also nice that wherever we go and whenever we meet new people we have each other so it’s never lonely! You moved to London last year, how’s that been? Harry: Yeah it’s great, we’re really settled in now. It was hard in the beginning leaving our family, living on our own and getting used to that, but we’ve got a great network of friends and people around us so we’re really comfortable here now. There’s still nothing like going home though! What one thing do you miss most from back home in Dublin? Alfie: Our family and friends obviously, and then just the people in general mainly - there’s nothing like the way people will talk to you and tell you stories at home, it’s magical - you can get in a taxi or get talking to someone in the pub or waiting for the bus and the next thing they’ll have you in stitches laughing or bawling your eyes out. It’s hard to explain but there’s nothing like it. Harry: And Guinness of course! It just not the same outside of Ireland and it definitely helps people’s ‘stories’ get a little more interesting! Ha! When you were playing covers, what was your favourite song to play? Harry: We’ve always loved playing covers, it comes from our busking days but some of our favourites would be Irish songs like ‘Monto’ and ‘Rattlin Bog’ they’re just so much fun to play. Why should we come and check you out this summer? Harry: Well our set will basically be all album songs so it’ll be a good preview we hope!

Gary Numan has been quoted as an influence by everyone from Damon Albarn to Kanye West and Wu-Tang Clan; Beck to Queens Of The Stone Age; The Foo Fighters to Nine Inch Nails [the latter inviting Numan on stage at several shows in 2009; Prince to Lady Gaga. While Numan’s unique, pioneering style continues to connect with fans from the worlds of Metal, Hip Hop, EDM, Industrial and Indie, he remains as focused as ever in pursuing his own singular vision. His new album, SPLINTER [SONGS FROM A BROKEN MIND] which came out in October 2013 - utilises many new sounds and ideas but is still very much a Numan record. Perhaps it’s the voice, one of the most distinctive in rock music. It’s often associated with machinery and icy alienation, but for those who are drawn to his music, there are strong emotions within the electronic noise. And clearly, for a man whose career started in the early 70’s and is STILL on tour the connection between Numan and his fans works. We caught up with him during the New Zealand stint of the tour to dig a little deeper into the man behind the façade… What does it feel like to be in your 4th decade of such a successful career? It’s all I’ve ever known really so it feels completely normal. I signed my first record deal when I was 19 and I’ve been doing it ever since so making music, being in a band, has been my life. It feels good to still have a career after so many years, I guess. I’ve seen an awful lot of bands come and go so I’m very aware of how precarious it can be, even if you are lucky enough to have a lot of success at times. For me things have just got better since my lowest point in 1992, each year being stronger than the one before, so I’m happy. If you could go back to when you were starting out and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? Strangely enough it would be to not listen to advice. Many years ago I went through a difficult period where things weren’t going so well and I lost faith in myself, in my own vision of what I wanted to do, and I started to listen to advice. Biggest mistake I ever made. We seem to be surrounded by people who all think they know what’s best, what we should do with our careers. In my experience, bitter experience that is, none of them knew what they were talking about and it almost ruined my life. I’m not good at taking advice anymore. Your latest sound is pretty dark and industrial, was that a conscious thing you decided to try to achieve or did it come about naturally as the album progressed? It started in 1994. I made the first of my dark and vaguely industrial albums back then, called Sacrifice, and I’ve travelled ever further among that path ever since. It was less a conscious decision at the time and more just a return to writing exactly what I wanted. I had made a very bad album two years before and my career seemed hopelessly lost. I went back to making music for the love of it, from the heart. Music made with no thoughts about commercial success or about trying to keep a record label or A&R man happy. I went back to doing it as a hobby as I thought my career was finished. As soon as I did that the music was darker, heavier and more aggressive. As soon as I abandoned all thoughts of trying to save my Pop Star career the music became more interesting and I headed up a different road. How have you found the reaction to Splinter and how do you feel about it as an album? The reaction to it has been nothing short of amazing, which obviously comes as a great relief. Many of the reviews talk about being the best album I’ve ever made so I certainly can’t complain about the reviews. It was album of the month in a number of big magazines across Europe and the US so it was all very satisfying and exciting. It really helped my confidence, which was cool for me as I’ve often struggled with that. Personally I’m very happy with the album and I also feel that it’s one of the best, if not THE best album that I’ve ever made. I’ve made about twenty albums now so to get that kind of reaction, especially when the album is a dark, heavy, brooding kind of thing, was very special. Most people that have been around as long as I have tend towards bland middle of the road material, or they go the nostalgia route; I’ve done neither, quite the opposite actually, and yet I get the best reviews of my life. It’s a good position to be in.

What’s your favourite way to listen to music? I don’t really listen to music. I don’t like it on in the house as the house is noisy enough with three young children. I don’t like it on in the car as that’s the place I tend to do all of my thinking. I have a lot of ideas come to mind when I’m driving and noise ruins that. I do go to gigs reasonably often but, generally speaking, I don’t really listen to music much at all. I work in the studio a lot, I play live a lot, so when I’m not doing those things I like to stay well away from music. Do you still enjoy playing your massive hits live? If I’m honest, they’re not the high points of the night for me but it’s okay, I’ve just done them so many times I guess. I do try to rework them from time to time to put some new life into them, more for my benefit than anyone else’s. But, it’s always nice to see the crowd react to those songs so I have no problem with playing them. What can we expect from the live show on this tour? Is it big production or stripped back? This is an ‘intimate’ tour, playing those places more out of the way that we mostly didn’t visit on the first Splinter tour, so it’s a smaller, closer affair. The last tour had the big light show, with the video screens and the whole spectacular vibe going on, which was great, but I wanted this one to be different. We played some shows in Europe that were smaller and I really enjoyed being up close to the fans so I wanted to do that in the UK. We are back to the big spectacular in November when we play the Hammersmith Apollo. Are you looking forward to Sonisphere festival? Very much so; Sonisphere is a great festival and I’ve had some amazing times there in the past, both on stage and in the crowd. The line-ups are good, the organisation is good, the fans are very supportive of all the bands that play, from early afternoon to the headliners, so it’s a very positive experience. Who will you be checking out on the Sonisphere line up? Prodigy, obviously, as they’re always phenomenal to watch live, but pretty much everyone I can get to see while I’m there. As I said before I don’t listen to music much when I’m at home so festivals are one of the ways I find out what’s going on. It’s also a good place to meet up with old friends though, and as I live in Los Angeles now I don’t get to see my British friends as much as I’d like. And finally, if you hadn’t become an international musician, what career do you think you would have ended up with? Well, my two big interests outside of music have always been aeroplanes and racing cars. So, my intentions as a 16 year old were, should the band idea not work out, to get involved in both of those activities. I wanted to do something that was exciting, involved travelling, had lots of variety and was constantly challenging. It was more those requirements that I wanted for my life, so I just had to find something that gave me those things. Being in a band is perfect but a pilot or racing driver would have been a very acceptable alternative. WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

What’s been the highlight of Moriaty so far? I think working with John Cornfield on our album was quite brilliant. He has worked on some of our favourite records and he is an absolute beast. What do you think are the biggest challenges facing new bands trying to break into the industry today? Having the time and finance to get out there and gig. A lot of venues won’t pay and it can end up costing a lot of money. From the dark corners of Devon an idea was born. Two guys, a few riffs and an aptitude for showmanship. Runner up in eatmusic’s ‘Best Live Act 2012’ and winner of Best Video at the South West Music Awards 2013, topped off with a tremendous review in Classic Rock’s ‘The Blues Magazine’ at the end of last year, Moriaty have already received critical acclaim. “The intention from the start was to enjoy music again and have a lot of fun doing so. At no time have we or will we lose sight of this. From the depths of the delta blues, swing and boogie woogie scenes of the 20’s, 30’s and 40’s, to the rock ‘n’ roll and jive of the 50’s, through to 70’s punk, 80’s metal, 90’s indie and 00’s Garage Rock: we take our cues from history, not from dickheads with fake glasses.” say the boys and it’s a dirty, bluesy sound that comes crashing out of them. It’s hard to believe just two of them can make so much noise! With a string of festival dates already in the bag for this summer and an album just about to hit the streets we’re pretty sure you’ll be crossing paths with them before too long. “Music is about escape, people sing songs because they want, for a few minutes to be in a different world, somewhere where everyday life doesn’t bother them: that’s why we listen to music, and that’s why we play it!” says Jordan West. Well we caught up with them recently to dig a little deeper…
Which venue/festival would you most like to play? Venue would be Madison Square Garden for its size and history and it’s New York! And festival would be T-in the Park cause that’s where Moriaty began, in a 2 man tent. If you were suddenly the biggest band in the world, who would you get to support you? If they would reform then definitely Rage Against The Machine. It was Rolf Harris but after what happened… What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Moriaty? We both work around the band but if there was no Moriaty then just more work. Describe your sound to us in five words… Filthy, Massive, Loud, Hench, Beef. Why should people check out your live show? We give it 100% every time and want people to have a good time with us. If you like Filthy Rock and Roll then get involved.

We have a wide range of influences from Nirvana, Muse, Rage Against The Machine and Pantera but have huge hip hop influences like the Pharcyde, Snoop Dogg, Wu-tang Clan and of course the pod casts from Ricky Gervais.
