Founded way back in 1994, when nu-metal was all the rage, and we all had the rage, 36 Crazyfists have just celebrated their 20 year anniversary. So it’s fair to say that if forced to describe the Alaskan heavy metal unit in just a single word, you might choose the word ‘persistent’. Since their formation, the band have released six studio albums through three different labels, lost members to everything from the usual band in-fighting to fatal car crashes, and shared the road with the likes of Alice in Chains, Atreyu, Killswitch Engage, Chimaira, Diecast, God Forbid, Walls of Jericho, and Poison the Well. They ploughed through the 90’s and 00’s and steadily made a name for themselves as they You’ve got a new album coming out soon, tell us a little bit about that… The album is called Time and Trauma and it feels wonderful to be getting close to its release. We wrote the album over the last couple years and its a collection of songs that really reflects on the subject of loss and the fragility of life. Is there an emotive theme running through this one as there was with ‘Collisions & Castaways’? My mother passed away in 2011 and the songs are all about the process of losing loved ones and how you pick up the pieces and carry on, so in a sense the theme is re occurring on that subject with a few other ideas thrown in as well. You’ve just celebrated your 20th anniversary. How does it feel to have reached that milestone? Feels very good, very proud of the length of this bands career and it feels like we are just hitting our stride with this new record. What do you think has been the biggest change within the music industry since you started out? Well in the early days there was no cell phones and map quest papers were all over the van trying to help us get to each venue, people still bought physical copies of records and the future was bright....enter the internet and everything changed, some for the better and plenty for the worst in regards to making a dime in this biz. Now you have to get much more creative to stay alive out there and its pretty much adapt and improve or sink. What do you think it is about 36CF that’s kept you in the business so long? Coming from Alaska we have a brotherhood that is solid, we are a family and we wanted this to be our career, the bond between us is one of respect and love for one another and overall we still love seeing the world and jamming with each other.

faced several ups and just as many downs. And next month, one of Alaska’s finest exports will return to the vibrant metal scene it helped forge with a UK tour, and they’re bringing a new album with them. ‘Time and Trauma’ will be the follow-up to 2010’s ‘Collisions & Castways’ which was arguably the band’s heaviest effort to date. A fierce, dark, crushing collection of tracks that rip from the speaker like a runaway train it dealt with many of the personal issues faced by frontman Brock Lindow, and with a title like ‘Time and Trauma’ we’re wondering whether this latest effort will be just as heavy, or perhaps slightly more reflective. We caught up with XXXX to find out a little bit more… What’s been the biggest challenge of your career, and what’s your proudest moment? The challenge is keeping that creative flame alive and without that challenge I think we would have hung it up long ago, So being hungry is still what keeps the drive climbing. There are so many mountains that we have climbed and being proud of all those accomplishments , Playing Download Main stage a few times is pretty amazing and very grateful for those opportunities. You celebrated with a big hometown show, is coming home the best? Home is the best and we feel so grateful for the Alaskan faithful that have always had our back. What are you looking forward to about touring in the UK? We have a very special bond with our people over there and we cannot wait to get over and connect with our 36 family again. Who’s got the worst habits on the bus and what are they? Our sound man Rumble has the worlds worst smelling feet but we love him so we just deal with the funk!!!! If you could go back and play one show over again, which would it be and why? I guess I would go back to our very first gig back in 1994 when our original bass player JD was alive, it would be awesome to jam with him one more time. What can fans expect from the live show? They can expect the boys to deliver...can’t wait!!!! Words: Zan Lawther

Would you rather be able to run 100 miles per hour or fly at 0.01 miles per hour? Run 100 mph Would you rather have a photographic memory that can only retain disgusting thoughts for life or have a 1 minute memory where you constantly introduce yourself to everyone? We would risk the photographic memory - because we never look at disgusting things! ;) If you could have any celebrity as a tamagotchi, who would it be? Jim Morrison - just so you could watch the carnage, mayhem and craziness but ultimately save him from going out too early!! If you had to play one of your songs on stage, on the spoons, which song would it be? Probably our new single out February 9th through all good outlets. The spoon version might be also released as an instrumental version... If you could be any historical British monarch, what would you be? Elizabeth I ruled England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603. The daughter of Henry VIII, the “Virgin Queen” rose to the throne at age 25 and was beloved by her subjects. Her navy famously defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588. She reigned over a golden age for art and science. Kudos Lizzie!

What is your worst tour story? We had an old van and and we were driving late at 3am down the motorway and the side of the van came off, completely fell out. We only just recovered from the fear and now we believe we styled it out like the A-Team or something. Tell us your favourite joke… I bought a dog off a Blacksmith the other day, as soon I got home it made a bolt for the door! Waheyyy!

Takedown festival returns to the University of Southampton site for its fourth year on 7 March. Kicking off the festival season with a bang, it’s fast becoming the South’s #1 alternative music event. A huge one day extravaganza, each year up to 50 bands take to the stage across one massive day of rock, metal and any wildcards the festival organisers want to throw at us. Already announced for this year’s fest are the feisty young upstarts Mallory Knox, storming their way into main stage headliner status after opening the very same stage only three years ago. Leading the way for them is pop rocker Charlie Simpson, who’ll be gracing us with a stripped down acoustic set. For the heavy lovers amongst us Bleed from Within, Devil Sold His Soul and hotly tipped newcomers The One Hundred and Create to Inspire are already chomping at the bit to get going, whilst those of us of more vintage years may be excited to hear that Inme have joined the ranks with an exclusive performance of the entirety of their seminal album ‘Overgrown Eden’. Takedown is a proud supporter of new music and aims to bring you not only the best and biggest bands they can convince to squeeze into the University complex but also the freshest new artists that the UK has to offer. Testament to their ability to pick out contenders for future global domination is the call on bagging Mallory Knox in 2012 so we’d definitely encourage music fans to look further down the bill this year and check out some of the local talent the South has to offer. We grabbed a few minutes with the gorgeous Sam Douglas of Mallory Knox recently to find out just want it is about Takedown Festival that makes them want to keep coming back….. You’re returning to Takedown for the 3rd time, this time as MAIN STAGE HEADLINERS, how does that feel in comparison to opening the same stage in 2012? It’s a really cool feeling. Takedown was the very first festival we ever played and we opened the main stage that day. To come back as headliners a few years later is something we are all pretty proud of.

dorset MUSIC | JANUARY 2015

You even came to party at Takedown last year even though you weren’t playing. What is it about TD that makes it so special? Haha I did! It’s just always got a really good vibe about it. A lot of my friends were playing last year and luckily we had a few days off while we were recording our new album, and Takedown fell on one of those days so I decided I wanted to come hang out and watch bands instead of being stuck bored in the studio! I had a great

MALLORY KNOX

time & definitely took advantage of being at a festival and not playing by drinking one too many beers. You’re currently in Europe, how’s that going? It’s going really well. It’s a new experience for us. We’ve never toured out here before apart from a few one offs here & there. The venues are huge for a first tour out here as well, so we owe alot to One Ok Rock for bringing us out on this tour. What’s the best venue or show you’ve ever played? That’s a tricky one because the more shows we do the better they seem to get right now! I’ll always hold Reading & Leeds in very high regard, just because we used to go there as punters. Nottingham Rock City was pretty special as well last year. However our latest headline run that we just did in the UK was my favourite tour we’ve ever done. 2 sold out nights at the Electric Ballroom was a big deal for us! What’s still left to tick off on the Mallory Knox bucket list? We gotta play the Abbey Stadium in Cambridge one day. Haha that might be on my personal bucket list instead of the bands though! What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever seen written about MK? We are very lucky to have a lot of people that really seem to care about this band. We get a lot of nice comments daily and we do our best to read them all. It’s hard to pinpoint the nicest thing I’ve ever read but I feel a real sense of pride when people write us letters saying how our music has helped them out in some way. That’s not why we write music, we just write it for the love of doing it but if we can effect some people the way that blink 182 and Alkaline Trio did for me, then that’s awesome. And what’s the weirdest? There’s a few weird ones. Some stuff I get sent online is pretty interesting to say the least. One of the weirdest things that happened was on stage though

when a few people started throwing tampons on stage at us. Just one or two like... and thankfully not used! What’s your favourite pizza place, although we know you’re all really partial to a certain chicken restaurant….? All about the Nandos aren’t we!?! I’m a big fan of the double cheese and garlic butter pizza at dominos though. Can we get that on our rider please? Wearing your own merch – yes or no? Personally no. I’d just feel a bit awkward. High fives or fist bumps? Good old fashioned handshake surely? What’s coming up for MK in 2015? We are heading out to America for the very first time on January with Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens which should be incredible. We are hugely thankful to them for giving us the chance to go out there. As first tours go we couldn’t have wished for anything better. After that we will see what happens. We literally want to see as much of the world as we can next year and get our music out to as many people as we can. What new bands can you recommend we check out? I’m a big fan of Moose blood. They supported us on our UK run and they are my favourite band in the UK right now. Definitely check them out if you haven’t. Absolutely lovely guys too. We look forward to seeing you at Takedown, tell our readers why they should get a ticket and camp out at main stage to see you… Because it’s gonna be our first show back from our 3 month USA tour and it’s going to have a real homecoming vibe about it. It’s gonna be like a big celebration and everyone’s invited to be a part of it and then we can all get really drunk afterwards!

FEATURE

Sunset Sons are an indie rock band from the UK (mostly), currently based in Hossegor, France. It could easily be said that the inception of the band was fate - musicians working away from home abroad and meeting by pure chance, coming together through a mutual love of music and surfing. 3 UK tours, 2 EPs, a couple of music videos and by the sounds of it a lot of sing-along covers gigs in the French mountains later, Sunset Sons are making their way back to the UK in Spring 2015 for a headline tour. We just had to find out more about the band, mountains and when an album is coming, so had a little chat with drummer Jed. Hey, tell us who you are and what you do in the band? My name’s Jed, I play drums basically. Drums etcetera. Can you play any other music instruments? I can play the guitar a bit. I can play the harmonica a bit. What else can I do...? Like all sorts of other percussion actually. I quite like playing the glockenspiel actually, I get that out sometimes when we’re in the studio. Ever been tempted to get it out on stage and have a go during a set? Err nooo I don’t think I’ve generally got the time to be honest with you, I’ve usually got quite a lot on when I’m on stage, aha. We haven’t gone down that sort of, Radiohead route, yet. What would you be doing if you weren’t in a band? I’d probably still be doing what I was doing before - travelling around, teaching surfing. I was in Hossegor, having a bit of time off from teaching, when I met Rory, our singer. I think if that hadn’t happened I’d still be there. Our lives were pretty good actually before we got signed, we were playing during the night time, surfing during the day. It was alright! We hear on the grapevine that Sunset Sons started off life as a covers band, tell us a bit about that. Basically I was travelling around teaching, and was in the Canary Islands for a bit. One of my friends there, when we all went our separate ways, said he was going to Hossegor [in France] to open a bar, so when I was around those parts I went to the bar, and met Rory, who was doing a little gig on his own that night. We decided we were gonna start a covers band there. The plan was basically to start a band so we could all eat AND go surfing.

DORSET MUSIC | JANUARY 2015

Can you remember which bands you covered in your set? We did allsorts actually, it was weird ‘cus we started off playing in The Alps. I don’t know how much you know about the whole music scene up in The Alps, but there is a ‘scene’, with lots of covers bands. It’s mental, but quite good. We went up there to get gigs and all the other bands were all just like pretty much putting a cd on [and playing along], so we chose all the tunes that we liked. We played The Who, and The Stones, and Queens of the Stoneage, and Zeppelin...as much rock n roll as we could, which meant we stood out as totally different from the other bands. We were just doing our own interpretations of all these tunes, and people started asking us if we had any original material so we thought we should start writing our own tunes. It was quite a gradual transition to ditching all the covers and just playing our own stuff though. You’ve released 2 EPs this year, the second - ‘No Bad Days’ EP came out at the end of October - do you just write really REALLY quickly or was it always the master plan to release 2 EPs rather than save it all up for an album? We do write quite quickly if I’m honest. Sometimes tunes will come in 20 minutes where others will take a month. Generally all the best ones take less than an hour...maybe not fully formed with lyrics, but probably like an idea to a finished tune. I’m always of the opinion that the ones that come quick are the best ones because they’re the most instant. We do write quickly but also we had a year of writing before we got signed so we had some material anyway. We’ve just finished recording our third EP which is coming out at the beginning of next year. It’s just trying to get as much music out there as possible really. What do you listen to while you’re driving to and from shows? We listen to a lot of different things. We’re all really into the new War and Drugs album at the minute. It depends who’s driving, ‘cus if you’re driving generally it’s your honour to choose what’s going on the stereo. Rory might have a bit of Kanye on, I might have a bit of Tom Petty on. Pete likes heavier and punk stuff. All sorts really. When can we expect a full length album? That’s in the post! We started recording it in Nashville a couple of months ago. I think we got maybe 4 or 5 songs down. We’re going back in February to finish it. It’ll be out in the summer. You’re touring the UK in March - what are your favourite things about playing the UK? To be honest our band started as a live band, we’d actually been playing together for a little while before we even went anywhere near a studio. Just playing live is what we all love doing. We’re a lot more comfortable being on a stage together, making a noise, than we are doing anything else, so it’s about playing live for us. What can your fans expect from the tour? Just a lot of energy, some new songs as well as tunes from the first couple of EPs. We’re just all really excited to be playing, and we’ll probably play a bit longer than usual as we’re headlining.

Do you pick your own support bands? Ideally yes, but it’s difficult as sometimes the bands we want are from the other side of the country. Because we’ve been around the country a few times and met a few bands on the way, we’d want some of the bands we’ve already seen and met ideally, but that’s still to be decided. WORDS: MARIANNE HARRIS

Kadia

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk

As we arrive at the start of a new year I look forward to lots of new musical discoveries. They can arrive from anywhere and in any form and I am always on the lookout for my next favourite band... Last year some of my best discoveries included cello led folk trio Kadia who really impressed me with a totally new style. I also saw great new Blues/Pop quartet The Villanovas who played a brilliant debut headline gig at Mr Kyps I am lucky enough to co present a local radio show with fellow DJ Tim Heywood on Bournemouth’s community radio station Hope FM broadcast on 90.1Fm or online at www.hopefm.com. The show is broadcast each Wednesday between 7-8:45pm and is all about promoting local music. Each week we invite a band to come along and perform live in the studio. Last year we had Empire Affair, Lady Winwood’s Maggot, Kadia, The Villanovas, Jack Grace, Ironic Encounter and many more come along to the studio to entertain the listeners. If you are a local Dorset band and want to be considered to perform on the show please feel free to get in touch. In December at the Winchester we held the Oxjam Bournemouth Takeover Christmas Party. It was a rock themed night including local bands Rise to Serve, Pirates of Panama and the mighty Saints Of Sin. It was a fantastic night and everybody who attended had a great night. We even had a marriage proposal on the stage at the end of the night. I just wanted to publically thank everybody that came along and supported the event you were all amazing. We managed to raise £300 to add to our total of £2500 raised in October. CHINNERS
