ROCK REGENERATION The daffodils are lining the road sides and the evening are getting lighter which can only mean one thing, that British Summer Time is on the way. This means only one thing: music festivals and by what I have seen recently there are literally loads on the way to make your summer.

We all have Grooves On The Green, Boscombe Community Fair, Wonky Donk Festival, Vdub In The Pub, Gunstone Gathering, Freshfields, Wimborne Folk Festival, Purbeck Folk Festival, Folk On The Quay, Wimborne Stomp and The Acoustic Movement Festival all within this area. The organisers are carefully planning the line ups and making all the necessary arrangements. Their festivals all need your support and tickets are normally a lot cheaper that most of the major festivals. March was as usual a very busy month with plenty going on to keep me from getting bored. A great night was had by all at Mr Kyps for the Hospices Rocks night. I was privileged to host the event which featured 4 great local bands Sansara, Walk The Night, Empire Affair and the manic merchants of hair metal Saints Of Sin. In total the evening raised nearly £1500 for two locals Hospices. Congratulations to the organisers Vikkie Richmond and Natalie Miller for doing such a great job. The ever smiling Steve Perry of Disco’s Out (Murders In) dropped into the Hope Fm studio for a delightful evening of some Kazoo led acoustic rock. The Bamboo Vipers featuring former front man of The Cropdusters Shaun Morris created a massive buzz with their debut gig at Chaplin’s bar with an encore of The Cropdusters classic“Just Poppin Out To Fight A War”causing sheer chaos within the rowdy audience. March is also the month for the massive Takedown Festival at the Southampton University organised by those lovely people at Advance promotions. With this being my third year on the trot, I truly was prepared for a hectic day. I managed to squeeze in seeing 26 bands, my aging legs thought they were going to drop off, but the support of my friends kept me going. With 5 stages their was no shortage of entertainment, with massive memorable performances from Heaven’s Basement, Dead! and The Howling...Roll on 2015!!!

So, new album Opposites of Light is out…..soon? Tell us about the journey you guys have been on to get to this point.
You’ve been going for well over a decade now, what do you think is the key to sustaining a career in music today?
Yes it comes out to coincide with our UK tour at the end of April. We started writing it when the impact of my relocation to the States was still very fresh, and looking back on it now it’s a great personal representation of all the things that piqued my interest during that time. Also we embarked on the process of reclaiming all our previous recordings from the various licensees that had been distributing them and bringing them all under the umbrella of our own labels. That is still going on and it influenced our decision not to work with another label on the new release. We were initially going to record in a traditional ‘month in the studio’ manner but decided to see how far we could go just working from home. I’d been recording bass parts for a project I do with Tom DiCillo the film director very successfully and that also encouraged me down that path. So apart from a week in a studio to record drums, bass and strings, the guitars were all recorded by Drew at his home in London and the vocals were all recorded by me at my house in Hollywood. A lot of emailing of files backwards and forwards, and I had to learn some more about sound engineering, but it meant I could spend as much time as I wanted exploring the parts and trying different performances and that is a huge advantage over what we may have lost sonically from not going in the studio. That said I think tracks like ‘Black Blizzard’, ‘Nightmares’ and ‘Dream Sequence’ are amongst the best sounding recordings we’ve ever produced.
Loving what you do and not standing still creatively. Actually that’s only what keeps Die So Fluid going. There are a lot of bands out there who do really contrived, predictable stuff and are 1000 times more successful. I’ve never been about that. It’s all about striving for something greater in art.
You released the video for Black Blizzard at the beginning of the year, did you feel the need to give something out to the fans? Between this album and the last the only thing that has come out was a DIY video for ‘Crime Scene’. We’ve been talking about the new album for a while so we really wanted to make a statement of intent with the video. The song is really grand and filmic, with its Egyptian strings, so the video had to live up to that sound. The reception by fans was great and it built on the anticipation for the record. What can we expect from the new album? It reflects the heavy element of what we do, and also the dark more introspective side. I expect some fans might prefer one side over the other depending on their tastes, and those that truly ‘get us’ will appreciate it as a whole. It’s gonna be interesting, even a bit scary, haha, but we stand by it. There’s no point in making music or art that isn’t genuinely from the heart or it won’t speak to anyone. We’ve never said we belong to any particular genre because we’re into challenging ourselves musically, and exploring what new and cool elements and sounds we can bring to it. It touches on Tex-Mex, medieval, and even psychedelic, so one of the best terms to describe it is desert vampire rock.
Have you got any advice for bands starting out and trying to make their way today? Do as much as you can on your own. Don’t release a sex tape until you’ve already had a scandalous bar fight with a nineties TV star. I think there are so many routes to fame now you just have to be completely open to everything and quick to respond. If however you want respect then do something brave and don’t sound like a thousand other bands. If you only want to make money then pick another career. What’s been the highlight for Die So Fluid so far? The completion of ‘The Opposites of Light’ seems like a massive achievement. We really went out on a limb to produce ourselves and put forward completely different styles of music. Are you excited to be playing in the UK again? Excited to play anywhere again after such a quiet couple of years. But looking forward to a greasy full English breakfast by the side of the road the morning after the first gig. Are you playing any festivals this year? We’re playing Alt Fest in the UK, Aug 17, representing on the S.O.P.H.I.E. stage! It’s a great new festival for fans of all kinds of alternative music. The line up is almost too good to be true. What are the best and worst things about being on tour? Generally I love being on tour, playing rocking shows is the best part, connecting with the fans and seeing new places. The downside is being apart from my husband and I adopted a dog a few months ago. I will seriously miss my fur baby. What are your must have tour travel items? In the final round the contestants performed various songs and in different band combinations in front of Roger and his team who then had the difficult decision as to who would make the band. Only one band member was ever guaranteed to make the band. The fan response was so strong, and the standard of talent so high, that 6 were chosen for the North American Band. The Queen Extravaganza band first performed on American Idol in 2012. The band is: vocalist Marc Martel; guitarist Nick Radcliffe; drummer Tyler Warren; bassist Francois-Olivier Doyon; and keyboardist and musical director Brandon Ethridge. “This band is now so frighteningly good, I would hate to have to follow them on stage,” explains Taylor.
THE QUEEN EXTRAVAGANZA - The official Queen tribute show produced by Queen drummer Roger Taylor. The Queen Extravaganza is a spectacular touring concert show designed to take the glorious music and live experience of legendary rock band Queen and bring it to generations of fans. Two of Queen’s original band mates and songwriters— iconic drummer Roger Taylor and legendary guitarist Brian May - are the masterminds behind The Queen Extravaganza. “The Queen Extravaganza is a new show specially designed to enable new fans, together with fans of old, to celebrate the music of Queen in a heartstopping event” says Taylor. “It’s very spectacular, it’s very visual, there are going to be some shocks and some tremendous surprises. It will be a rock celebration in the Royal tradition.”
The 90-minute show features more than 20 Queen classics drawn from the band’s biggest hits: “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Under Pressure,” “We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions,” “A Kind of Magic,” “Radio Ga Ga,” “Somebody to Love,” and “Killer Queen” as well as other fan favourites. To capture the fabled design and excitement of Queen’s legendary live performances, veteran Set Designer the late, great Mark Fisher agreed to create the staging and production elements for The Queen Extravaganza. The production is also enhanced visually with rare video footage from Queen’s extensive archives. We think you’ll agree, for any Queen lover, this sounds too good to be true – we’re already pulling on our skin tight vests, backcombing our bouffants and smoothing our moustaches…… we’ll see you at the front!
Taylor hand-picked the band members from thousands of entries through a unique online talent search with video submissions generating more than 10 million views from around the globe. The first round was an online open audition - contestants downloaded Queen tracks and uploaded their performance to queenextravaganza.com. Roger Taylor and his team selected entries for round 2, who uploaded new performances to a set of new backing tracks. Two weeks of online fan voting via the website decided the finalists who then competed in a ‘Live Final’ at the Foo Fighters recording studio

Bournemouth prepares itself to welcome back the fabulous Mr Scruff this month when he hits The Old Firestaion on the 15th May. DJ, Producer, Cartoonist and Lover of Tea (he even has his own tea company and his very own tea shop in Manchester!) he plays music from across the board, including Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Dubstep, Latin, African, Ska, Disco, House, Funk, Breaks, Soundtracks & loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. You’ll also notice his childlike cartoon drawings that illustrate everything that is Mr Scruff… You started in the early 90’s making pause-button mix tapes…..things have changed a LOT since then. Obviously you must embrace the technological changes, but are you nostalgic about simpler times? Back in the early to mid ‘80’s, most bedroom DJs had to make do with bits of cheap home hi-fi & a mixer from Tandy. The pause-button tapes took a long time, but made you plan ahead a bit, as you couldn’t really go back & change anything. I try and hold onto that decisive & simple approach nowadays. You’ve stated in the past “the most important skill for a DJ is to play great records in the right order” – do you think this is a skill being lost or enhanced as audience’s attention spans get shorter and the ‘mash up’ becomes more prominent on the dance floor? Digital DJ software makes it easier to get the next record on a lot quicker, which is sometimes good and often bad. I like playing records all the way through, but overall the main skill of ‘programming’ i.e. telling a story with each piece of music as a word or punctuation mark within that story, is the same, whether you play tunes and leave gaps, use a microphone, or get crazy technical and play several tunes at once. When did you start drawing characters from your Mr Scruff world (was it something you did as a kid, or was it something you started for Mr Scruff)? I was 15 when I started those cartoons and they haven’t changed a lot since then. It just made sense to illustrate my music in that style, especially since I have a kind of cartoon name.

Having started working from his bedroom in the 80’s, building his sound through regular bar gigs and radio in the 90’s and releasing the hugely successful ‘Keep It Unreal’ album in 1999, which spawned his residency show and following it up with ‘Trouser Jazz’ in 2002, Mr Scruff is now kept hugely busy making music, making tea and entertaining the masses with his unique blend of beats and charming weirdness. We met up with the man himself to ask him some appropriately silly questions.
Do you prefer playing club shows or festivals? No preference, I really enjoy the variety. Indoors/outdoors/ massive/intimate, they all have a part to play. Can you speak whale? I wish! I am not big enough, and I can only hold my breath for about 30 seconds. Do you eat fish and if so, how do you like it cooked? Yes, and I like it cooked well. No preference, variety is the spice of life. What’s your favourite tea (drink)? And do you have a favourite dunking biscuit? As above, any decent tea will do; black/green/herbal etc. No biscuits but a good Assam with a slice of fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese is a winning combination. And finally, are you a bit of a scruff or do you like to dress up once in a while? I am generally slightly creased, but have been known to wield an iron on occasion. What bands would you most like to support/go on tour with? Probably Black Star Riders, Black Stone Cherry, Slash, Rival Sons and again The Temperance Movement, as we were lucky enough to support them last summer at Kyps and were just blown away! What’s your favourite festival? We think they’re all great but it’d be a toss up between Download, Isle Of Wight or Reading/Leeds.
2014 might just be the breakthrough year for up and coming hard rockers Walk the Night. Homegrown on Bournemouth’s coastline these youngsters have managed to harness the classic sounds of 70s rock n roll and drag it by its hair into the 21st century – a point proven by their recent addition to the Camden Rocks festival line up. With a strong and loyal fanbase building already we reckon these guys really are Ones to Watch at the moment so we caught up with the boys to see what they’re all about, what’s coming up for them this summer and just what inspired them to do what they do…… Who are you and what do you do in the band? In the band we have Chris Payn on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Scotty Farron on bass guitar and backing vocals, Rus Scagell on lead guitar and backing vocals, and finally Andy L Smooth on drums and backing vocals. How did you all meet? Well Scotty and Rus knew each other since first school and were always in bands together playing Green Day covers. When Upper School started we met Andy and heard he was into the same music as us so we jammed with him and started a 3 piece. Then Rus had a call from Chris to play some songs with him at a small festival, so Rus offered him to come jam with the 3 of us and so the band was formed. From there we played covers together for years until we decided to start writing our own material!
What’s been the biggest achievement for Walk the Night so far? Either signing with our management JonnieRay who are always pushing us to go further and helping us along the way, or supporting The Temperance Movement, they were such humble nice guys and you can’t help but respect what they’ve each individually achieved! Definitely a band we look up to. What’s on the agenda for you guys in 2014? We’re planning to hit the studio in a few weeks to record some new material for potential releases throughout the year, we have a slot at Camden Rocks Festival which we’re getting psyched up for and other venues and festivals we’re planning on playing! Who knows maybe even some more videos ;) How would you describe your music to someone who had never heard you before? Classic Groove Rock with a modern touch! Why should we come check out your live show? We bring nothing but raw energy and loud classic rock songs to every gig and love seeing new faces in the crowd! We bring the grooves, the riffs, the beats and the blistering solos and guarantee to get your head banging, your foot stomping and your fist pumping with the recycled energy from the great bands of the 70’s into the modern day! So come to a gig soon and you won’t be disappointed!
What made you first decide to start playing music together? Probably due to having the same influences and all being of the same age when we started out, we all loved playing loud classic rock music so it felt like the right thing to do! What bands do you like to listen to? The mighty Zeppelin! The Temperance Movement, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Slash, Foo Fighters, Black Stone Cherry.....too many to list them all aha!

At the moment we have ‘The Pageant of Power’ with Status Quo and both ‘Carfest’s’ for Chris Evans but more are coming in!! What’s your favourite song to play live? I really enjoy Renegade as it’s probably the most personal song on the album. Who would you rather tour with: One Direction, Lady Gaga or Cher? Cher every time! Plus I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for her after seeing her on that war ship as a teenager!!! If you could be a superhero which one would you be and why? Superman! Flying, running at lightning speed and X-ray vision!! What more do you need?! Would you rather fight an elephant sized spider or a 1000 spider sized elephants? 1000 spider sized elephants!! I hate spiders and love elephants! What’s the worst thing about being on tour? Driving the van!! How many motorbikes do you own and which is your favourite? I only own my 2007 championship winning Honda Fireblade so that has to be the one! If you had to cover one of Katie’s (Melua - James’ wife) songs, which one would it be? Spiders Web definitely! It’s an amazing song! Why should we check out your show? A lot of the feedback we get at our live shows is how obvious it is to see we all love what we do and it means a lot to us on stage.
