The Festive period is upon us once again. As reliable as clockwork, every 11 months we plunge into the final strech before beginning all over again. Luckily for anyone who lives in Dorset, we get to accompany our frost covered countryside and tourist free beach walks with some excellent music. Blossoms, with all their well deserved hype, pay a visit to The Old Fire Station. The Skirmish band battle at The Winchester reaches its conclusion and the O2 Academy has packed their end of year calendar with some huge names.

We finally approach the end of 2016. A year that will perhaps in the future be dropped from history classes. There are many parties setup to celebrate it’s end. From the indoor festival “On The Bus” warehouse party, to Bollywood Beats at Mr Kyps. To themes as varied as James Bond (Canvas) and Cirque Du Soir (Halo), we take a look at some of the ways to blow out 2016 in style. All our usual features are in, including Chinners’ Rock Regeneration Round Up, The DnB Sub:Section with D-Tox, and interviews with Mark Patrick of Freestyle Music Center & renowned DJ Featurecast.

Taking influence from Manchester legends such as Oasis and The Stone Roses, Blossoms’ eponymous debut record spent two weeks at No.1
2016 playing live to sold out venues and packed festival tents across the UK and Europe.
The band have appeared at Glastonbury, Field Day, Bilbao BBK, Rock Werchter, The Great Escape, T in the Park, Parklife, Kendal Calling, Isle of Wight Festival Reading and Leeds, when it was released in August – Festival No.6 and more and have just finished a headline UK tour it is the first time a debut album has spent more than one week at and their very first dates in the No.1 from launch since 2014. US and Canada. Following the release of the album the band have now gone on to reach over 10 million streams on Spotify. Blossoms have had a very busy

in fact was shot on a budget of just £60, which led to them being signed to Skeleton Records, owned by James Skelly of The Coral, which led to their first official single ‘Blow’, released in August 2014. Since then the band has gone from strength to strength including numerous festival appearances and the single ‘Charlemagne’ topping the Christmas vinyl chart The Old Fire Station has a history of hosting some bands who have gone on to fill stadiums. It’s entirely possible this is another such occasion to see some future superstars on the way up.

Aaron, you are the brains behind the Skirmish Battle Of The Bands. What inspired you to setup the competition?
As a spoken word artist, I am acutely aware of the frequent offer from event organisers to get ‘paid in exposure’. The platform that originally allowed them to cut their teeth often ends up becoming a weight around their ankles and paid work hard to find as a result. Freeway poets was my inspiration, where there is a levy on the door and offers open mic, featured local artists and guests from out of town. It’s a journey that leads to paid gigs. Skirmish Presents is, in essence, an umbrella brand for events to provide a similar journey for local artists.
You had a huge number of bands apply to this contest. What were your expectations when starting up the competition and what has it taught you about Dorsets live music scene? Aaron Lowney

b at t l e o f t h e b a n d s Originally, we wanted 48, but settled for 24 acts when we fell slightly short, but in the end we had in excess of 60 interested acts. I’ve learnt that the live music scene in Bournemouth is even more diverse than even I ever imagined. Acts have come out of the woodwork, even out of retirement to compete.
Has there been a personal highlight of the heats ?
There have been so many it’s almost impossible to choose, but if you put a gun to my head and said, pick one, I’d ask if I could pick two. Losing Pachango was gut-wrenching, but when The Bomo Swing stepped in they lifted the roof like nobody had expected. It was their first outing as well! The other was when Wikkaman introduced us to their latest additions to the band.
What tips would you give to any band looking to go far in one of these Battle Of The Bands style events?
I’d say be yourself and ignore the other acts and what they delivered. Go and sit in our green room if you have to, but
with so many top class acts, don’t think about how you’ll follow the act before, but how the act after will follow you!
Outside of the Skirmish competition, what are your favourite events and venues in the area that you’d suggest people check out? Obviously, I love the Winchester and all the hard work they do on the daily to support the arts locally. Beyond there, Chaplins is outstanding, for many of the same reasons, plus the smaller, touristfree venues and festivals in the area. Can I say On The Bus?! For a quiet drink away from the hustle and bustle, I’m very partial to Eden Bar, rain or shine.
The finale night is looking to be somewhat of a spectacle. The four best bands in Dorset followed by an afterparty till 2am. What have you got planned to see us into the small hours once the winner has been crowned? We’ve got all of the contributors, supporters, event organisers and judges in for a night of rock music & drinks promos. Skirmish Presents and The Winchester Pub want to say thank to all who have supported the event, the winch and the live music scene in Dorset.

Bristol’s up-and-coming funk-rock duo Little Thief, and a DJ roster that reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the local dance scene, and you’re got a night that finally lives up to the New Year’s Eve hype.
And the festival vibe continues as On The Bus’s legendary BYOB (Bring Your Own Beer) policy is fully upheld, as are the magic buses themselves to get you to and from the party for cheaper than a taxi home from town. The On The Bus festival decor team are stepping up to the mark to turn Freestyle into a place of mysticism and magic. Whoever said that summer had to end with the passing of the sunshine. This new years, the festival moves indoors, the party continues and you’re all invited!
ON THE BUS NYE
NYE is always one of the biggest nights in the calendar, On The Bus Festival are throwing a crazy warehouse festival party to wave goodbye to 2016. Headlining is Southampton’s very own Featurecast. With plaudits from the likes of Fatboy Slim, DJ Yoda and A Skillz and described as ‘Nu Funk’s very own Mr Midas’, Feature Cast has proved himself to be a leader in his field as he looks to conquer the world. From DJing to producing, this guy is a juggernaut tearing down the scene with his impressive catalogue of chart-topping releases and his skills on the decks being showcased globally. How long have you been DJ’ing and how did you first get into making music? I got into DJing back in my school days. I originally wanted to enter the DMCs and compete but then I discovered production so I sold my decks and bought my studio gear. After about a year I bought my first technics and got back into it again. The two have gone hand in hand ever since.
Your sets quite literally mix almost every genre imaginable. Where do you draw your musical inspiration from? Everywhere. I love all music so I’m consultanly on the lookout for interesting sounds.
Where did the name Featurecast come from?
It was from a TV show. I had a release ready for a label called Catskills and I hadn’t chosen a name yet. I had a call from the label saying the artwork was being finalised and they needed a name. I happened to be watching a TVs show called future cast at the time and was put on the spot to come up with a name, so I changed the future to feature and that became my artist name.
How do you go about finding tracks that mashup together so well?
I look everywhere for music, online, record stores, friends, all sorts. Whatever I like I put into my iTunes then go through ideas to mash up or remix.
DJ’ing is just one half of the job right? Can you tell us a little more about the process you go through when producing a track?
I basically always start with the drums and bass to get a groove going then build the track up from there. Once I have enough elements I’ll start a rough arrangement. I also tend to mix my tracks down as I write them. Most people leave this to the end but it’s always made sense for me to do it as I work.
What’s been your highlight of your DJ career thus far? Where’s been the strangest place I’d say Breakfest in Australia was a big you’ve played a set?
highlight for me but also this summer at Shambhala Festival in Canada. That was another amazing experience. Being on the same bill as quest love, DJ Numark, Cut Chemist and Z Trip was pretty memorable.
I’d say Serbia. The show its self was great! it was an out door pool party but Serbia was quite a unique place to visit with a crazy history. It felt very alien to me.
How has the club scene changed since you’ve been DJ’ing and where do you see it going?
I feel the club scene has died quite a bit. So many clubs have closed over the last 5 or so years. People seem to be in favour of festivals these days but give it time and I’m sure it go back to the clubs again.

FEATURECAST
There are a few rehearsal rooms across Bournemouth and Poole. Blue Line Studios in the Triangle, Absolute Music in Wallisdown, North Road Music Centre at Bournemouth and Poole College, and recently Freestyle Studios, nestled cosily in the middle of Holton Heath Trading Park. The brainchild of live music enthusiast Mark Patrick, Freestyle is much more than just a set of practice rooms. Mark himself describes it as a ‘leisure centre’ for musicians, offering services such as music tuition at all levels, full high-end recording facilities, a shop selling everything the modern artist could possibly need, plus a fantastic 300 capacity venue complete with fully stocked, and very reasonably priced, bar: The Middle Eight. As I turn up to a nondescript industrial unit not ten minutes outside of Poole, I’m struck by how easy the place was to find. I rounded the corridor into the bar/lounge area to meet up with owner Mark, a successful businessman with a real passion for music, and a proficient musician in his own right. Fresh from their first ever Halloween party, Mark remarks how well everything went: ‘A great night was had by all, and it finished just in time for the first train home’. With a beer licence until 2am, but permission to stay open as long as they wanted, it seems like more of these events are on the cards for 2017. I wanted to know more about Mark’s motivation, as anything to do with music at a local level is notoriously difficult to generate any real income from. ‘It’s an unusual business because the profit motive isn’t the most important thing... the most important thing is the experiment’, ‘if you believe in what we’re trying to do, and you do it properly, responsibly and ethically, if the market likes that, the market will make the business work and the profit will come’.
BEHIND THE SCENE
With Mark Patrick Freestyle Music Centre “Word of mouth is the most beautiful way of promoting a business” estate on the outskirts of Poole, but Mark’s clear ability to think outside the box generated a real solution. With Holton Heath railway station only 5 minutes walk away, Mark used his background in working with big companies to forge a deal with South West Trains to lay on extra journeys when Freestyle have a later show on. ‘South West Trains have been nothing but accommodating. We spoke to them, we explained what we wanted to do, we explained why we wanted to do it, and we explained to them we felt like there might be some upsides in terms of their presence in the community’. Indeed, if any corporations out there might need some positive publicity, it’s the rail companies. The idea behind Freestyle wasn’t always a live venue. ‘The original vision was that the musical instrument sales, our branded musical instruments, would form the focal point of the Freestyle brand... but the reality is that the instrument sales have been slower that I would have liked’. The in-house shop sells a variety of high quality instruments and amplifiers sold carrying the Freestyle name. ‘We’re becoming a reasonably important rehearsal facility locally, the studio is starting to get busy... That’s something I’m really, totally ecstatic about’. So it seems instead of just another, albeit fantastic, music shop, Dorset has gained a real unique, friendly and ethical hub for all local musicians and fans to enjoy. All Mark asks is that people keep using Freestyle music, and more importantly, keep talking about it.

by Harry D-Tox Label mogul, party promoter, razor-sharp selector: Logan D’s entire life is fuelled by drum & bass. Not content with just being a DJ, Logan’s love for the scene soon found him establishing Low Down Deep Recordings. Now nearing a decade of consistent releases. D-Tox caught up with him as the winter nights draw in. What music did you grow up listening to? I grew up listening to Lovers Rock and Reggae, so that’s the reason I am a bassline lover. Can you remember the first record that you bought? The first record that I ever bought was called ‘Who Is It’ by Firefox & Suvivor and it was on Philly Blunt. Which DJs made you want to get into music and what was it about them that inspired you? Mampi Swift & Andy C were my favourite DJs, their fast paced mixing and double drops always kept the set interesting. Shy Fx was my favourite producer & track selector as he always had the Lovers Rock / Reggae influence in his sets. Nicky Blackmarket, Brockie & Micky Finn were also the first sets I would reach for in a tape pack. When did you start DJing and where was your first set? I started DJing in the shed down the back of my garden in 1996 then started playing on pirate radio stations in 1997. By 1999 I had my first booking in room 2 of a club called Atomics, which was based in Maidstone, for an event called Pure Science. Can you name a stand-out set or most enjoyable performance in your career so far? 2012 Low Down Deep @ Privilege in Ibiza has to be the most stand out for me, hosting a night at the biggest club in the world definitely hasn’t faded out in my memory bank. This year we celebrate a decade of Low Down Deep Recordings, what made you start the label and what artists were initially involved? I started the label off because it was such a struggle to get exclusive tracks
or even promos from artists / labels around that time. If you don’t have those new tracks, you do not stand out from other DJs, which limits your bookings. I had never produced music, so I literally had nothing to offer other producers in order to get something back from them, so Low Down Deep Recordings had to be formed. The early artists were Majistrate, Mutated Forms, Nightwalker & Pleasure. What were the highlights of the Decade of Low Down Deep Tour? For me personally, taking the tour to Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Germany and a bunch of other countries with brilliant audiences was a proud moment. It’s great to see Drum & Bass growing so much worldwide. If I had to pick one party in the UK as a highlight, I think Bournemouth would be the one. I did a 2 hour set and the atmosphere and crowd were electric. Every tour night has ben amazing, but that one stood out for me.

What’s next for LDD and where do you see it going in the next 10 years? A 10 years of LDD LP was planned in the schedule for December, but I have decided to release everything separately now, so basically, there are lots of tracks to get out over the next 4 months and I plan to release something every 2 weeks. I don’t’ know what the future will bring, but I do know in 10 years’ time, we will still be releasing

GRASSROOTS MUSIC ALL WEEK LONG
Every music scene relies on a healthy grassroots to keep it alive. One constant factor in this for decades has been the Open Mic or Plug & Play events that emanate from the corner of many a pub, venue or even restaurant.
The upclose and personal atmosphere created by these often intimate affairs, provides a perfect enviroment for musicians to hone their skills. Many of the world’s biggest artists can be traced back to these nights. Frank Turner played a solo show to around 20 people at the Portman Green Room in Boscombe before his solo career took off. He returned unannounced to The Music Box in Sailsbury last month to play a few songs at their Open Mic. Ed Sheeran famously did a show every day for a year taking in many of the countries open stages in the process.
Mondays at The Four Horsemen you’ll find a night where anyone is welcome to sign up with one booked headline act each week. Camden in Ashley Cross also offer a Open Mic night in their inviting Monday live lounge. Tuesday, Aaron Carter hosts an Open Mic at The Boat That Rocks in Portland. Si Genaro and Nacho Jase run the long standing Revolving Door at The Anvil and there’s also Buffalo Bar in Winton. All before we reach the midweek hump. To get you over Wednesday you can get your fix of live music at Freestyle Studios in Holton Heath and enjoy their Middle 8 Bar. Award winning Boscombe Bar Chaplins also run a midweek Open Mic with theirs being hosted by Chris Payne. www.rock-regeneration.co.uk From late November we have already been hearing lots of Christmas tunes being played in retail outlets and pubs all over the region.
These tunes seem to be always the same old tunes that we hear every year and for most they have become tired and boring. This year a couple of local artists have tried to inject something new into Christmas by releasing original tunes that take a new spin on Christmas and also to raise much needed funds for charity. Love or hate Christmas music, it’s very hard to ignore, from the moment you hear Slade’s “Merry Christmas Everybody” you know the mad festive period is on us. At the beginning of December on my local radio show “Livewire Live” on Hope Fm, I will start to play a host of Christmas tunes from local artists who have created alternative songs to the same old ones we always here. The first of the new releases this year is from young singer/ songwriter Calvin Glen who with Brothers Grimmer guitarist Lee Cleary and a host of friends have
put together a festive tune called “Christmas on your Mind”. The song highlights the struggles of young people between the ages of 14-25 with mental health issues, with all profits going to the Dorset Mind campaign. Calvin has also organised a two day event 2nd/3rd December at Winton Liberal club to launch the single. The event will be an evening of live music on the 2nd December and on the 3rd December starting at midday twelve hours of live music, alongside a Christmas bazaar, games and raffles, face painting, Santa Claus and much more. The second of the new releases come from three piece indie rock band “Music in Translation” who have recorded an original Christmas song, “It’s Xmas Don’t You Know” in aid of local charity The Lymington Centre. The single release will be accompanied by a fundraising gig, also in aid of The Lymington Centre, on Saturday 10th Dec at The Lymington Centre’s Fuller/ Mcllellan Hall at 7pm entry by donation. Music In Translation have been together for 3 years and consist of husband and wife Paul and Nikki Pusey on guitar and vocals, and Jake chambers on bass and vocals. - Dave Chinnery
