POP! Art in a Changing Britain 24 Feb – 7 May 2018 Rooms 10, 12–16 A vivid exploration of how artists in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s responded to rapid social change, as Pop Art emerged as a means of addressing the rise of mass media, the cult of celebrity, questions of identity and prevalent political concerns, issues that still resonate today. A generation of artists led by Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and Patrick Caulfield radically challenged thinking about art and mass media, democratising art by questioning the traditional division between high and low art. They took their cue from advertising, comics, science fiction and contemporary music, embracing nontraditional materials and techniques.

The exhibition celebrates Pallant House Gallery’s significant collection of British Pop Art, including major paintings, sculpture and its extensive holding of Pop prints. It includes seminal works such as Peter Blake’s ‘The Beatles, 1962’ (1963–68), Richard Hamilton’s ‘Swingeing London’ (1968), Jann Haworth’s ‘Cowboy’ (1964) and an early example of Pop printmaking, Eduardo Paolozzi’s ‘As Is When’ (1965). Leonard Rosoman: Painting Theatre 3 Feb – 29 Apr 2018 Rooms 2–4 Experience John Osborne’s controversial play ‘A Patriot for Me’ through the eyes of British painter Leonard Rosoman ra (1913–1912) in a series of works not seen together since the 1970s. When ‘A Patriot for Me’ was first performed at the Royal Court in 1965, Rosoman found its exploration of gay life such a transformative experience that he returned every night for a week to create drawings by torchlight. Three years later he revisited these first impressions, producing a remarkable series of works that conveyed the ‘claustrophobic, sometimes savage, atmosphere’ of the play, whilst capturing a moment in time when attitudes towards sexuality and censorship were on the cusp of change. Curated in association with Dr. Tanya Harrod.

Young British Artists: The Frank & Lorna Dunphy Gift 24 Feb – 7 May 2018 Room 17 Six important works by Peter Blake, Michael Craig-Martin, Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk and Rachel Whiteread, donated to Pallant House Gallery by Frank Dunphy, former manager to Hirst, demonstrate how a generation of artists known as the Young British Artists adopted and expanded the 1960s Pop Art aesthetic.

Sheila Bownas: A Life in Pattern 21 Feb – 20 May 2018 De’Longhi Print Room An exhibition of original designs by the mid-century textile designer Sheila Bownas (1925–2007). A prolific designer, Bownas supplied patterns to the likes of Liberty London and Marks & Spencer during the 1950s and 1960s and yet remained relatively unknown until an archive of her work surfaced at auction in 2008. Her colourful patterns featuring a wide variety of motifs, from playful figurative scenes to floral and geometric arrangements, captured the optimism of the post-war era. This exhibition offers an opportunity to discover the work of a talented British textile designer who, alongside many other female designers in the mid-century textile industry, remained invisible during her career. Curated in association with Chelsea Cefai.
