Exhibition Highlights

POP! Art in a Changing Britain

Leonard Rosoman: Painting Theatre

24 Feb – 7 May 2018 Rooms 10, 12–16

3 Feb – 29 Apr 2018 Rooms 2–4

A vivid exploration of how artists in Britain in the 1950s and 1960s responded to rapid social change, as Pop Art emerged as a means of addressing the rise of mass media, the cult of celebrity, questions of identity and prevalent political concerns, issues that still resonate today. A generation of artists led by Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Peter Blake and Patrick Caulfield radically challenged thinking about art and mass media, democratising art by questioning the traditional division between high and low art.

Experience John Osborne’s controversial 1965 play ‘A Patriot for Me’ through the eyes of British painter Leonard Rosoman RA (1913 – 2012). The play’s exploration of gay life proved transformative for Rosoman, who went on to create this remarkable series of paintings which conveyed the play’s ‘claustrophobic, sometimes savage, atmosphere’ whilst capturing a time when attitudes towards sexuality and censorship were on the cusp of change. Curated in association with Dr. Tanya Harrod.
