Art History Courses Deepen your knowledge of art history with our expert tutors. Courses can be booked in full or as individual sessions and include refreshments. Suitable for all levels. How Artists Use Pigments and Materials Wed 18 Apr, 11am–1pm From Poussin to Picasso, Titian to Turner, examine the many reasons behind colour choices and how decisions led to mistakes in some cases. Led by Linda Casey.

Looking into Art Examine how painters and sculptors use various techniques to make their works convincing, using line, colour, perspective, scale and references to art of the past. Five session course £100, individual sessions £25. How Artists Engage our Emotions Wed 4 Apr, 11am–1pm Discover how artists like Delacroix, Matisse and Kandinsky use colour, composition and subject matter to engage our emotions or provoke a response. Led by Val Woodgate. Why Size Matters Wed 11 Apr, 11am–1pm Delve into how the meaning of works of art can be transformed by their scale through artists as varied as Holbein, Giacometti and Gormley. Led by Frank Woodgate.

Signs and Symbols Wed 25 Apr, 11am–1pm Explore how artists have used signs and symbols to give deeper layers of meaning to their work from the 15th to 20th centuries. Led by Val Woodgate. References from the Past Wed 2 May, 11am–1pm Examine how modern artists have looked to great predecessors for inspiration and how their treatment of traditional genres can change our understanding. Led by Frank Woodgate.

Pop Art in the Swinging Sixties Sat 7 Apr, 11am–1pm, £25 Explore Pop Art’s brightly-coloured response to the world of consumerism, youth culture and the mass media in Britain and the USA. Led by Val Woodgate.

Illustrated Journaling for Beginners* Sat 19 May, 10.30am–4pm, & Sun 20 May, 11am–4pm, £150 Find inspiration in your everyday and learn how to capture moments using a variety of media and techniques in this weekend course. Led by Kate Boucher. Developing a Creative Habit: How to Begin* Tues 3 Apr, Tues 17 Apr & Tues 24 Apr 10.30am–4pm, £220 Sometimes the hardest thing is knowing how to start. This three session course will inspire and reveal helpful techniques. Led by Kate Boucher.

Observational Drawing for Beginners* Sat 10 Mar, Sat 17 Mar & Sat 24 Mar 10.30am–4pm, £220 Develop an understanding of how to draw from observation using different techniques. This three session course aims to build confidence as well as skills. Led by Kate Boucher. Colour Theory for Beginners* Sat 28 Apr, 10.30am–4pm, £85 Gain a practical understanding of colour theory including how to mix and use colours to give cohesion to your work and enliven your compositions. Led by Kate Boucher.

Drawing for the Terrified* Wed 5 Apr, 10.30am–4pm Be inspired to draw without worrying about the outcomes in a relaxing environment using charcoal, graphite, pen and pencil as basic drawing materials. Creative Collage* Wed 24 May, 10.30am–4pm Working from a simple still life or taking inspiration from the gallery, have creative fun whilst learning how to collage using coloured paper, felt tips, crayons and pastels. *All participants will be sent information and a materials list prior to the course.
