Art History Courses Deepen your knowledge of art history with our expert tutors. Courses can be booked in full or as individual sessions and include refreshments. Suitable for all levels.

The British Drawing Revival of the 1960–70s Rethink the role of drawing in 20th century British art, looking at its revival by artists including R.B. Kitaj, David Hockney, Frank Auerbach and Barry Flanagan. Led by Dr Kate Aspinall. Three session course £65; single session £25

Virginia Woolf: Art, Life and Vision Wed 20 June, 11am – 1pm, £25 Frances Spalding, art historian and scholar of Bloomsbury, leads a special study session tracking the far-reaching cultural resonance of Virginia Woolf’s life and work and the impact of art on her writing and creative thinking.

The Rebirth of an Idea Wed 6 Jun, 11am-1pm Consider the conflicting views of what drawing could and should be in the 1960s and 70s, leading to the current fascination with this versatile medium. A Lost Art? Wed 13 Jun, 11am – 1pm Learn how educational reforms and scientific advances in artists’ materials fuelled developments that threatened to leave tradition behind. A Grammar All Its Own Wed 27 Jun, 11am – 1pm Discover the connections between abstract and conceptual drawing by exploring the language of composition, gesture and markmaking that developed.

Primitivism, Realism & Everything in Between Examine the tensions around the concept of skill in 20th century British art, from the emulation of naïve art by Christopher Wood and Ben Nicholson in the 1920s to the desire for expressive freedom among David Hockney, R.B. Kitaj and many others in the 1950s and beyond. Led by Dr Kate Aspinall. Two session course £45; single session £25

De-Skilling Wed 18 Jul, 11am – 1pm Several British modernists including David Bomberg, Christopher Wood and Francis Bacon sought to break away from tradition with its emphasis on technical skill. Re-Skilling Wed 25 Jul, 11am – 1pm Artists such as R.B. Kitaj, Lucien Freud and Gerald Laing abandoned the edgy simplicity of their early success for more naturalistic subjects and more traditional aesthetic appeal.

Paris in the Spring: Art Treasures of Paris Take a journey through the art of Paris in a repeat of this popular five session course, now on Saturdays. Five session course £100; single session £25 From Ancient Paris to Masterpieces in the Louvre Sat 2 June, 11am – 1pm Start with a visit to medieval Notre Dame and gothic Sainte Chapelle before exploring the Louvre’s extraordinary collection and the Musée de Cluny with its famous Unicorn tapestries. Led by Val Woodgate. The Beginnings of Modernism the Musée d’Orsay Sat 16 June, 11am – 1pm Delve into the Musée d’Orsay’s collection, from French Academic to early modern art, including works by Cézanne, Gauguin, Van Gogh and Matisse. Led by Frank Woodgate. The Musée Rodin and Public Sculpture Sat 30 June, 11am – 1pm Encounter previously unseen works by Auguste Rodin in what was once the artist’s home, before taking a tour of Paris’ vibrant public sculpture. Led by Linda Casey.

The Musée Picasso Sat 14 July, 11am – 1pm Housed in the beautiful Hôtel Sallé, discover the French state’s substantial collection of works by Picasso, acquired after his death in 1973. Led by Linda Casey. The Centre Pompidou and Modern Art Sat 28 July, 11am – 1pm Learn the fascinating story of the Musée National d’Art Moderne – Centre de Création Industrielle, including its controversial design by Richard Rogers and Renzo Piano and its enormous collection. Led by Alexandra Epps.

Practical Art Courses Fuel your creativity by learning a new practical skill in a friendly and supportive environment. Our creative courses are led by practising artists. Book early to avoid disappointment.

Exploring Drawing

Creative Space

Fridays in June (1, 8, 15, 29), 10.30am – 4pm Four session course £250 Explore scale, surface, texture, form, composition and mark making using a variety of drawing media and using the art historical context of still life to inform your choice of subject matter. Led by Sue Halloway.

Get creative on our popular practical day courses for those who aren’t sure where to begin. Workshops can be enjoyed individually or as a pair. Both sessions £150, single session £85 Creative Collage: Inspired by the Figure Wed 27 June, 10.30am – 4pm Inspired by a live model, compose quick figure studies by cutting and tearing shapes and capturing lines of rhythm and movement. Led by Katie Sollohub. Expressive Drawing from Still Life Wed 26 September, 10.30am – 4pm Forget accuracy and work freely with mark-making. Play with charcoal, ink and other drawing materials to make expressive responses to a still life. Prepare to get a bit messy. Led by Katie Sollohub.

Summer School Tues 14 – Sat 18 August, 10.30am – 4.30pm (4pm Sat) Five day course, £280

Often the hardest part of creating anything is knowing where to start. Our new fiveday Summer School will give you the confidence to find inspiration, experiment and express your ideas. Over the intensive five-day course you will develop methods for generating and exploring ideas, work from direct observation in the Gallery and discover the benefit of experimentation with different media and scales. The course is delivered in a supportive, creative and non-prescriptive environment via demonstrations and oneto-one support. Led by Kate Boucher.

Art History Course Tutors Frances Spalding cbe, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, art historian, critic and biographer. Linda Casey is a TATE Guide and a freelance lecturer. Val and Frank Woodgate are TATE Guides and accredited lecturers of the Arts Society. Alexandra Epps is a TATE Guide and accredited lecturer of the Arts Society. Dr Kate Aspinall is a historian, writer, artist and accredited lecturer of the Arts Society. Practical Art Course Tutors Kate Boucher trained at Chelsea School of Art and West Dean College and was the Edward James Foundation Scholar in 2015/16 and winner of the Valerie Power Prize for Visual Arts. Katie Sollohub has been artist-in-residence at JMW Turner’s House in Twickenham and has been selected for the RA Summer Show and The Jerwood Drawing Prize. Sue Halloway trained at the University of Sussex and has led a variety of adult workshops at Pallant House Gallery for over nine years. Gallery Supporters
