James Milkovich presents an interesting look into the world of regional advertising memorabilia with his article on the Southgate Santa Claus button in this month’s cover story. Southgate USA is a major shopping center in Ohio. In 1971, as a Christmas holiday promotion, the mall began giving out Santa Claus collector buttons. A new version continues to be given out each year.

The Southgate Santa Claus Button: A Holiday Tradition Advertising Buttons Offer Collectors A Fun Look At Christmas Memorabilia By James P. Milkovich

When Southgate USA opened to much fanfare in August of 1955, it made headlines as one of the largest and most exciting new shopping centers in the nation. The impressive main strip mixed elite department stores such as Sears Roebuck, J.C. Penney and May Company with quaint “five and dime” soda fountain outlets like S.S. Kresge and F.W. Woolworth’s to offer the burgeoning post-war population in Cleveland, Ohio’s southeast suburbs over 800,000 square feet of shopping paradise. Add in three different grocery stores, numerous

clothing, appliance, footwear, medical and financial establishments, as well as a cinema, a bowling alley and a wide variety of restaurants, and there seemed to be no need for any family to shop anywhere else. The vibrant strip center was popular with young people from the very outset. In scenes reminiscent of “American Graffiti,” teens in colorful maroon and white letter sweaters from hometown Maple Heights and their green and white counterparts from rival Bedford would “shoot the gate” in revved up hotrods. (Continued on page 5) In the early 1970s, management devised a creative and unique holiday promotion. Each member business was stocked with an ample supply of nickel-sized, red and white Santa Claus buttons to be distributed free of charge on the Friday following Thanksgiving to mark the opening of the holiday season. As predicted, the buttons were immensely popular as word of their availability spread throughout the community. Local dignitaries, high school bands and other civic groups were all a part of the grand event, which included the tossing of buttons and candy into the crowd. Ted Knight, who played the role of comical newscaster Ted Baxter on the “Mary Tyler Moore Show,” was one of several high profile individuals to serve as grand marshal of the parade. The original prototype has remained remarkably consistent over the (Continued from page 5) course of four decades with a new version of Santa being designed each successive year. By 2000, the buttons had grown slightly larger to nearly the size of a quarter with an additional trim color beyond the standard red and white occasionally blended in to the design. The 1990 issue featured a beautiful silver background to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Southgate USA holiday parade. The 2005 button added the additional 1955 date to mark the 50th birthday of the shopping center. Adding intrigue and mystery to the Southgate USA Santa Claus button craze was the recent discovery of a rare dime-sized specimen from 1971. This is last year’s 2013 button. The quantity of buttons has decreased commensurate with the declining population of Cleveland’s inner-ring suburbs. “In our heyThe blue background signified a complete day we printed 50,000 buttons,” said Debbie style change in the design of the button in Iacoboni, a former administrative assistant at 2007. the center. By 2010 the production was down to approximately 15,000. The newly minted 2014 edition will be produced in a quantity of 5,000. Sandra Fronius, the current Tenant Services Coordinator for Southgate USA, is already working on the design for a special 2015 commemorative edition, which will coincide with the 60th anniversary of the legendary shopping center. “We are even exploring the possibility of once again hosting the holiday parade with the participation of Santa Claus and a well-known master of ceremonies,” said Fronius. tags of 10 cents a copy. This was later raised to 15 cents in the late 1940s. Occasionally, a special edition such as a Giant would sell for 35 cents or a half-dollar. The basic price rose to 25 cents in the 1960s and, finally, to 49 cents before publishing ceased in 1972. From the very beginning, the tremendous demand for all issues required constant reprints. Subsequent printings frequently involved new cover art, some issues going through three or four changes. All reissues of the first 80, which had been published with line

drawings, were redone as painted covers. Once in a while, the inside artwork was completely redrawn. The first reprints appeared in April 1943, when Numbers 1 (“The Three Musketeers”) number 2 (“Ivanhoe”), number 3 (“The Count of Monte Cristo”), and number 5 (“Moby Dick”) were released. A couple of months later, number 4 (“The Last of the Mohicans”) underwent a reprinting. With the exception of the last 30 or so titles, which had five or six press runs, most of the Classics averaged between 10 and 25 printings over the years. All original issues carry an advertisement for the next title but reprints do not. The key is to look at the ad listing old titles for sale. If this number is higher than the number on the cover of the magazine, then it is a reprint. The highest number listed dates the particular reprint and it is this number (“HRN” for ‘highest reorder number”) that collectors use. Gilberton also marketed other educational comics. Their Classics Illustrated Junior line of 76 titles, published between 1953 and 1972, was aimed at (Continued on page 18)
