In this issue, contributing author Larry Balawender gives us an account of historical fiction writer Joseph Altsheler’s work. His books were among the most popular juvenile fiction in the first quarter of the 20th century. Written in series, such as the Young Trailer series, Civil War series, and Great West series, the work still resonates with young children today who are interested in early exploration and wilderness adventure. Also featured is an exhibition of Czech travel posters that was mounted by Nicholas Lowry of Swann Auction Galleries, along with his father, George, at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Iowa. These artistically graphic posters were used to advertise and promote tourism both inside and outside the Eastern European country. Of course, there is much more, including information on numerous shows, auctions, and exhibitions. Until next time, enjoy!

The exhibition “Czech Travel Posters from the Lowry Collection” will be on view until Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. George and Nicholas Lowry are fatherson collectors of travel posters within the Czech lands. Viewers of PBS’s “Antiques Roadshow” will recognize Nicholas Lowry as a regularly appearing expert. George Lowry was born in Czechoslovakia, escaping on the eve of World War II and Hitler’s occupation of the country. The father and son own Swann Auction Galleries in New York City. Founded in 1941, Swann is the largest auctioneer of works on paper in the world, dealing with items ranging from books to photographs to posters. At over 1,000 works, the family owns the largest collection of Czech posters in the world outside the Czech Republic. The collection grew over the last 25 years out of the family’s Czech origins and George and Nicholas’s mutual passion for the images. Curated by Nicholas, “Czech Travel Posters from the Lowry Collection” showcases 43 travel posters that span several decades, many of them being exhibited for the first time. For a small country, Czechoslovakia produced a

large number of posters, owing to a combination of the country’s rich artistic legacy and strong economic climate. The travel posters are a unique form of advertising showcasing the beauty, intrigue, and architecture of the Czech lands, sometimes urging tourists (in German, English or French) to visit such wonders in Czechoslovakia as Brno or Kutna Hora. Other posters extol the sporting opportunities in Czechoslovakia, such as golf or skiing. A few are in Czech, printed to promote internal tourism and travel. National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library The National Czech and Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is a museum that celebrates life Czech life, Slovak life and American life. The museum seeks to inspire people from every background to connect to Czech and Slovak history and culture. Through exhibitions and experiences, the museum tells stories of freedom and identity, family and community, human rights and dignity, connecting yesterday with today and tomorrow. The museum honors those who immigrated to America and worked hard, contributing their skills and vision to the formation of our nation. Remembering Author Joseph A. Altsheler By Larry Balawender

I was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., which is in the Wyoming Valley surrounded by the Pocono Mountains. During my early teenage years, I found adventure following mountain trails, climbing small cliffs and drinking from small, pure streams amid pines and hardwoods and occasionally being jolted back into reality by the flight of a Ruffed Grouse. My adventures were enhanced by reading books by Joseph A. Altsheler. My brother had one of his books, “The Lords of the Wild,” which was one of six in

the French and Indian War series, and he once said to me, “I can almost smell the woods when I read a book by Altsheler.” Altsheler had the ability to make the pages of a book come alive with realism and take the reader back to Colonial America to the Eastern wilds, early settlements, to the lakes and mountains, as well as the Plains of the West. Besides the French and Indian War series, with much of the story centered around Lake George, Fort Ticonderoga and points north, he also wrote (Continued on page 7)

eight books in the Young Trailers series, three in the Texas series, eight in the Civil War series, two in the Great West series, and three in the World War series, among many more that were not written in a series. Most of the early editions were published by D. Appleton and Company in the early 1900s prior to World War I. Joseph Alexander Altsheler was born on April 29, 1862, in Three Springs, Ky. He attended Liberty College in Glasgow, Ky., and later Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. Altsheler went on to become a newspa-

per reporter and eventually became editor for the CourierJournal in Louisville, Ky. After getting married, the Altshelers had one son, Sydney, and in 1892, the family moved to New York City, where Joseph found employment as a feature writer for the New York World. In about 1896, he decided to write a series of novels for boys. He went on to write 45 historically accurate novels, becoming one of the most popular boy’s authors in the country. The Altshelers were in Germany in 1914 when WWI began and had a difficult time getting back home. Due to this

Joseph A. Altsheler Wilkes-Barre. Other memorable titles which are not in a series are “Horsemen of the Plains,” which ranks high on my favorites list, as well as “Wilderness Road” and “Quest of the Four.” My favorite still remains the French and Indian War series. I have collected all of them, some first editions, which are getting harder to find. I still have my first Altsheler book, “The Lords of the Wild,” and still enjoy reading it from time to time while realizing my brother was right you can almost smell the woods when reading a book by Altsheler.

For many years, I collected his books, primarily the French and Indian War series and the Young Trailers series. In “Scouts of the Valley” from the Young Trailers series, Altsheler describes the Wyoming massacre of 1778, when the British along with Iroquois Indian allies attacked and killed many colonists in their path of plunder. The site of the massacre at Wyoming is roughly five miles up the Susquehanna River from my hometown of

The room was unusually crowded and active as several of the big buyers chose to attend in person. At least 10 records were set, and as in any good auction, there were some unexpected (pleasant) surprises as posters far exceeded their estimated value,” said Swann Galleries’ president Nicholas D. Swann Galleries’ Oct. 27 sale of Rare and Important Travel Posters set at least 10 auction records. The selection reflected the rapidly changing technology and styles that epitomized the beginning of the 20th century. Another record was set for Frederic Kimball Mizen’s “Fifth Avenue – New York / The World’s Greatest Shopping Street,” 1932, which sold for $6,250. The price nearly doubled the previous record, set by Swann in 1999–the only other time this rare poster has been seen at auction. Other notable lots include Percival Albert Trompf’s “Australia,” 1929. A view of the scenery and fashions at Bondi Beach and one of the first posters commissioned by the Australian National Travel Association, the poster sold to a
