We explore many fascinating categories and markets in this issue, notably comic books and comic art. Both are experiencing a bull market for premier examples. Heritage recently sold a copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 for a world record price. The issue was the 1962 first appearance of Spider-Man. The copy sold was a 9.4 CGC and brought $454,100. It had been purchased 36 years ago for $1,200. Another key Marvel comic from the same collection that was sold was The Amazing Spider-Man #1 from 1963. It sold for $110,537. Several important sales coming up include Swann Galleries’ auction on Thursday, May 5, of autographs featuring Anne Frank’s copy of “Grimm’s Fairy Tales.” The book was left behind when the Frank family had to leave their Amsterdam apartment. The famous diarist today is among the most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Bonhams will sell several extremely rare Audubon prints from “Birds Of America” in its Tuesday, April 19, sale. A Louisiana Heron and Great Blue Heron from the Havel edition in 1834 once belonged to the third Earl of Caledon and were acquired from John James Audubon (1785-1851) in 1842. Of course, there is much more, including information on numerous shows and other auctions. Until next time, enjoy!

CBCS grade and extensive restoration. A high-grade, near-mint 9.4 CGC copy of The Avengers #1 sold for $98,587. The iconic book is tied as the second-highest CGC-graded copy to ever be offered by Heritage. Perhaps foreshadowing the success of his big screen debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” a nearmint 9.8 CGC copy of Fantastic Four #52, famous for the first appearance of the Black Panther, saw intense bidder interest as it sold for $83,650. Another key book, Tales of Suspense #57, introducing fellow film star and Avenger Hawkeye, sold for $47,800. The auction’s astonishing 99 percent sell-through rate included classics of original comic book art, including John Romita Sr.’s original cover art for The Amazing Spider-Man #62. The 1968 cover, depicting a battle between Spidey and Medusa of the Inhumans, measures 12.25by-18.5-inches - a rare and coveted example of the comic master’s larger artworks to cross the block. A war between 26 different bidders pushed the rarity to $179,250. The original cover art for Daredevil #9, by fan favorite Wally Wood, sold for $149,375. The scarce, 1965

A copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the 1962 first appearance of Spider-man, sold at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on Feb. 18, for $454,100, a record price at public auction for the comic. The near-mint, 9.4 CGC copy claimed top lot honors in Heritage’s $5.7+ million comics and comic art signature auction. The copy was purchased in 1980 by New York area collector Walter Yakaboski, a comic book collector, who had the opportunity to buy a handful of key early Marvel comic books for the sum of $10,000 - a good bit to spend in those days. Among them was the copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the landmark first appearance of Spider-Man. This particular comic cost $1,200 among the trove purchased accounting to Yakaboski. The copy was not known to the collecting hobby before this auction, because Yakaboski kept it preserved in a safe deposit box for 35 years. The buyer at Heritage was an anonymous collector. “It’s a superbly preserved copy of one of the most soughtafter comic books in the world,” said Lon Allen, managing director of the comics department at Heritage. “It’s worth well more than its weight in gold. There are very few like this one.” Another Spider-Man comic from Yakaboski’s collection drew serious attention as a 1963 copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 sold for $110,537. A copy of Detective Comics #27 - marking the first appearance of Batman - shocked the auction room floor when it realized $167,300, despite its 4.5

Comic Books And Comic Art Reign Supreme At Philip Weiss Auction An original color art page by French artist, cartoonist and writer Moebius (1938-2012) sold for $56,500, original cover art from the legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert (1926-2012) fetched top dollar in part one of his massive comic collection, and sneakers signed by Michael Jordan and worn by him during the 1991 championship playoff series realized $12,000. These were just part of a major auction featuring sports items, comics, comic art, animation, Star Wars toys and collectibles and more, held Feb. 27 by Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. Over 600 lots came up for bid in an auction that grossed just under $500,000. Internet bidding was facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com and Proxibid.com. Between the online bidding (which was also available through the Philip Weiss Auctions website at www.weissauctions.com) and people in the room, the auction attracted close to 1,000 registered bidders. “There was also very lively phone bidding, especially for the Joe Kubert items,” said Philip Weiss. All prices quoted include a 13 percent buyer’s premium. Moebius, whose real name is Jean Henri Gaston Giraud, was a French artist who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinees tradition. He used the pseudonym Moebius (and to a lesser extent Gir) for the Blueberry series, which he created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier. It featured one of the first anti-heroes in Western comics. He was esteemed by Stan Lee, Federico Fellini and others. The Moebius work sold was a direct color art page, drawn for

This pair of sneakers signed by Michael Jordan and worn by the NBA legend during the 1991 championship playoff series brought $12,000.

An original color art page by French artist, cartoonist and writer Moebius (1938-2012) drawn for Metal Hurlant in 1977 The original cover art for for “The Ballade” sold for Hawkman #103, by the legendary comic book artist Joe $56,500. Ballade.” Joe Kubert was a renowned American comic book artist, art teacher and founder of The Kubert School. He is best known for his work on many DC Comics characters and was inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998. A choice selection of lots comprised part one of Kubert’s gigantic collection. The remainder will be spread out over a series of future auctions, also to be held by Philip Weiss Auctions. The top lots from his collection in the Feb. 27 sale included signed original cover art for Hawkman #103, which changed hands for $15,800, and Hawk Son of Tomahawk #140, which finished at $5,450. The pair of black Michael Jordan game-worn sneakers wasn’t in new condition (they were game-worn, after all) but the star’s signature had been declared genuine. They were sold with a

certificate of authenticity. The backstory was compelling: Jordan wore the sneakers during the 1991 NBA championship playoff series against the L.A. Lakers, while a member of the Chicago Bulls. What would a Philip Weiss Auctions sale be without original Peanuts comic art, drawn by the iconic American illustrator Charles Schulz? A daily Peanuts strip, signed and dated March 2, 1964, topped out at $15,800. Schulz (1922-2000) became one of the wealthiest men in America by using his childhood insecurities and failures as material for his beloved Peanuts comic strips. The hundreds of comic books in the auction included rare examples from the heralded Big Apple collection. An example was a pedigree copy of All Select #10 that soared to $8,850. A fine group of movie production cels also came up for bid, including a Peter, Chief and Tiger Lily

An unpunched Hans Solo carded figure sold for $3,560, and a 1977 Star Wars early bird blasted off to $11,300. Also in the sale were Golden and Silver Age Comics, All Star Comics and key issues. Anne Frank’s Copy Of “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” Comes To Auction On Thursday, May 5, Swann Galleries will hold an auction of autographs, featuring Anne Frank’s copy of “Grimm’s Fairy Tales” (Aus Grimms Märchen), in which the young diarist wrote her own name as well as her sister Margot’s. The sale represents the first major offering of Anne Frank autograph material at auction in over two decades, and the discovery of the book is an intriguing tale. The book was left behind in Frank’s Amsterdam apartment when the family’s departure to the famed secret annex was hastened after Margot was called to relocate to a work camp. The book eventually made its way to a secondhand bookstore in Amsterdam’s Runstraat, where a Dutch couple purchased it not long after the war. In 1977, the couple’s children discovered the signature and wrote Anne’s father, Otto Frank, the family’s sole survivor, to let him know of the discovery. In a poignant letter, which will be up for auction alongside the book, Otto expressed how deeply the discovery of the book affected him, as well as his wish that the family keep the book for their own daughter. While her now-famous diary shows Anne as a young girl wise beyond her years, this book is a poignant reminder of her innocence and youth prior to her time in hiding and untimely death in a concentration camp. The book, along with Otto’s

business, politics, discoveries, and family history. By the same token, postage stamps reflect the times and teach us about people, places and events, reflecting on the talk of the day,” said Saadi. “Stamp collecting is a great way to connect with the past and present, obtaining valuable knowledge that requires being mindful without the need for technology.
